The Cespedes signing, along with the continued talk about Manny, is also interesting for what it says about how the A’s view other players on their roster. While the team seems willing to put plenty of faith in their young pitching prospects’ ability to step up and perform in the majors this season, they clearly seem reluctant to want to put much faith in most of their young hitting prospects at this point.
how is this bad news for cowgill?
it doesnt seem that smith and reddick are long term options. cowgill has yet to prove himself in the system

He probably doesn't have a job in majors now
Unless (or more precisely until) somebody gets hurt or traded, and before Cespedes signing he had a good chance at being the fourth outfielder. So I would say this is bad news for Cowgill. And I don’t really understand what do you mean by “proving himself in the system” comment, why would performance be more valuable if it happened with the A’s? I mean, Matt Moore hasn’t proved anything in A’s system either.

It's more that carter and taylor have had years now to prove themselves
and cowgill has yet to take an at bat. i think it would be foolish to completely devalue his wort to this team before giving him a chance. there was a reason billy wanted him in the trade, and it wasnt so he could sit idle. rarely are prospects acquired simply for the purpose of being a future trade chip
I think the cespedes signing is more a signal to the end of the carter and taylor experiment. if i’m beane, I shop them while their value is still as high as possible
j-spliff415 - February 14, 2012
Carter has proven his bat at the AAA level
and hasn’t even had a full cup of coffee at MLB. Taylor also hasn’t had much chance at the MLB level. 2010 was a wash as he was mostly injured or sick, while he was good but not great in AAA in 2011.
OaklandSi - February 14, 2012
I'm of the impression their value is at a low right now.
Jufran Sauce - February 14, 2012
thats why i said as high as possible
j-spliff415 - February 15, 2012
Smith Gomes Reddick Crisp Cespedes
no room for the Cowgill.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
you value gomes over cowgill?
j-spliff415 - February 15, 2012
No not really
I just think the A’s might, and the fact that he is making $1M and Cowgill is making zero (and can be stashed at AAA no problem) means he is not on the MLB team to start the season.
That being said if he mashes at AAA they will find a spot for him quickly.

Whlok's On First?
turkey3a - February 18, 2012
Did not realize his slash line was so good.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
More impressive to me is that those 33 homers came in about a 90 game season.
Jufran Sauce - February 14, 2012
Sure he's happy he doesn't have to wear those God-awful uniforms.
Geesh, they make the Ryan Express astro jersey’s look like Bull’s jersey’s…lol!
Halloffamer7 - February 17, 2012
And his on-base percentage was Bondslike.
Halloffamer7 - February 17, 2012
Who's on First?
Could any of the excess outfielders be shifted to first base, to platoon?
