What a crazy offseason? What became apparent after yesterday is that aside from Billy Beane stock piling young arms, also does the same for outfield options. With 8 outfielders on the roster (9 if you count Brandon Allen), what combination of this will be the most effective for the A's?

- Collin Cowgill
- Josh Reddick
- Jonny Gomes
- Coco Crisp
- Jermaine Mitchell
- Michael Taylor
- Seth Smith
A quick look at this shows that 3 different combo of these OF lineups yield between 5-6 WAR. To reference the Willingham/Sweeney/DeJesus 2011 OF, that trio combined for 6.9 WAR. It appears that the CAIRO projections for everyone but Crisp and Cespedes are around 1 WAR for a full 650 PA. What this tells me is that these parts are super interchangeable. The hope is that either the platoon of Gomes/Smith is a success, or Josh Reddick will play beyond his projections.

Thank you
Cool write up David… Thank you for putting it together. Of all the question marks, at least we know the A’s outfield will be fun/interesting to watch. Looking forward to watching Gomes launch balls into the left field bleachers!
Chavvy3 - February 14, 2012
much better
than when our outfield was Sweeney. And Sweeney. And, um, Sweeney.
malikot - February 14, 2012
Thanks for this as well
The Hardball article is strange, though: he leaves Reddick, Cowgill, Taylor, Allen, Carter and pretty much everyone else out in the cold for 2014, but pencils in Seth Smith as DH! Just as strange as that is penciling in Daric Barton at 1B and Tyson Ross in the rotation. At this point, both are coming off injuries and there’s no telling if either will return to form so pencilling them in for the season after next is weird.
What sets Carter and Allen apart, I think, is the raw power, power that sometimes gets harnessed later rather than earlier (i.e. David Ortiz, Nelson Cruz, Carlos Pena, Jason Werth, Michael Morse). If both are with the team after the dust clears this spring, I think one of them could well take off, and become either the first baseman or DH.
The key question, I think, is not who starts the season in Sacramento because injuries occur and players play themselves out of line-ups on every team, every year, but who remains on the 40-man roster when the dust clears.
richwol1 - February 14, 2012
6.3 Total
If we use last year’s bWAR for Crisp (2.1), Reddick (1.6) and your projection for Cespedes (2.8) we’ll get 6.5. My feeling is that this might be the outfield we see opening day.
I’m guessing we might see a platoon DH of Gomes/Smith.
Geronimo Berroa - February 14, 2012
Whoops! Meant 6.5 total....
Geronimo Berroa - February 14, 2012
I think that's exactly right
And I think it’s more likely that this outfield performs a little better than these projections rather than a little worse.
wcmori - February 14, 2012
that's exactly what I think
And what makes the most sense. Crisp, Reddick, and Cespedes project as the best defensive OFs by far, and are probably the best offensive OFs also. Gomes can’t field or hit righies. Smith can’t field or hit lefties. Neither Carter or Allen will play OF and never really were going to regardless. They’ll battle with Barton for time at first and with Smith and Gomes for DH. Taylor and Cowgill fight for the 4th OF spot and/or injury sub.
jdr - February 14, 2012
One problem is that you can't have two DHs, it takes away from the position players.
So either Smith/Gomes works in as DH / OF or only one of them makes the club.
Eastbayjim - February 14, 2012
Well, both will definitely make the club
Rest assured. It’s more a question of who on the lower end gets forced out. At this point it would seem that’s Cowgill or Taylor. I’ll amend my statement and say those two guys are battling it out for the 5th OF spot. And not to say neither Smith nor Gomes will EVER play the outfield, they will (though I would guess Smith sees A LOT more time in the OF than Gomes).
jdr - February 14, 2012
I agree with this.
I think in an ideal world, we won’t have to watch Smith or Gomes trucking around a corner OF spot but it’s going to happen; at some point.
Geronimo Berroa - February 14, 2012
Not really impressed with any projection that expects a full season of Reddick
to earn ~1 WAR when he put up 1.9 WAR in 87 games last year. In addition, Coco’s put up 5.5 WAR in 211 games in that last two years. They’re projecting 1.6? Really?
A'sFanDFW - February 14, 2012
I agree
I think Reddick would outperform his projection
David Fung - February 14, 2012
Yes, those projections are very pessimistic
Other projections have him around .330 wOBA. Why do you use CAIRO as opposed to any other projection system, David?
Furyan - February 14, 2012
yeah that seems a little low. 435 PA is probably around 100 games. I would think 2 is more accurate.
Although if Crisp moves to LF he won’t benefit with the positional adjustment he has in CF. I’m interested to see if he could even handle LF in the field. More plays at the plate and different angles. He’s been in CF for so long.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
he's started over 200 games in LF
and, remarkably, according to UZR he’s had more defensive value there than he has in CF, even after accounting for positional adjustment.
NRC - February 14, 2012
Awesome.
A Crisp-Cespedes-Reddick OF could be ridiculous defensively, would be a lot of fun to watch.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
That really could be an excellent defensive OF
Nico - February 14, 2012
The more OF we have, the less we can afford a platoon.
Isn’t this common sense? Don’t the A’s value roster spots even more so than the average organization?
Utilizing a platoon of two short-term veterans like Smith+Gomes instead of letting Carter or Allen get ~500 PA’s each in a year that means utterly NOTHING is one of the worst mistakes we could make in 2012, in my opinion.
RyanFromBonas - February 14, 2012
agree completely
makes no sense to “stockpile” all this “outfield talent” and then not let the high-ceiling guys get the major league experience.
This is NOT a “good problem” to have. We have a bunch of mediocre guys and hope desperately that someone can exceed reasonable expectations. Willingham and Dejesus pretty much underwhelmed and they still are going to be hard for this group to match.
rBorba - February 14, 2012
Who are these "high-ceiling" guys you speak of?
BWH - February 14, 2012
good point!
Maybe I mean “Higher ceiling” lol. Taylor once upon a time, I suppose.
rBorba - February 14, 2012
Judging by the moves, I almost have to assume the A's feel that Carter/Taylor have hit their ceiling.
Geronimo Berroa - February 14, 2012
That's sad, if true
Both with so much potential at one time, and never really having had a major league season. I’d still like to see Carter and Allen get a real shot for a year. Taylor I’m not so confident about, even though he had the best pedigree at one time.; something just went wrong there, not sure what.
Nico - February 14, 2012
Carter takes a while to be comfortable at each level.
I would like to see him play an entire MLB season before giving up at all.
Of course, you never know, he may be the 2012 1st baseman for all we know.
Eastbayjim - February 14, 2012
I haven't seen enough of Carter to conclude he can't hit big league pitching,
but I think I’ve seen enough to conclude that he can’t field.
Nico - February 14, 2012
a lot of big league first baseman can't field well, that's whay they play first base.
If he can hit 25-30 jacks a year I’ll live with his fielding.
Billy Frijoles - February 15, 2012
Serious question: Have you seen him?
Nico - February 15, 2012
Yes.
And the Mrs says he has a nice smile. Definitely big league smile.
Tutu-late - February 16, 2012
yes, he seems decent enough at the AAA level
His horrendous big league perfomance was in spot play. I chalk it up to nerves and also the failed OF experiment
Billy Frijoles - February 16, 2012 via Android app
He just seems to have hands that go "clank"
Nico - February 16, 2012
Taylor tried "fixing" his swing to generate more power and completely butchered it,
as evidenced by his .272 6hr showing of 2010. They’ve been helping him get back on track, but it has not been an easy fix to say the least. Per Melissa Lockhard. Hopefully this year he can bounce back!
Halloffamer7 - February 14, 2012
Especially considering how patient the A's have been with Daric Barton over the years...
elBONESAW - February 14, 2012
I don't think they've been unduly patient with Barton
In 2009 he was pretty much jettisoned in favor of J. Giambi. In 2010 he was fantastic, which certainly earned him a starting job in 2011. In 2011 he wasn’t fantastic and so going into 2012 no one has guaranteed him a thing.
Nico - February 14, 2012
Technically, I think
Barton was jettisoned in favor of Nomar Garciaparra, who was our opening day 1B and stayed there for about two weeks. Nomar was jettisoned for Giambi, who then played half the season before getting traded.
iglew - February 15, 2012
So, in other words, guys are going to be traded.
OptimistPrime - February 14, 2012
I would love to see a post listing some possible trades that people would like
Something like Trade Smith, get xyz
Trade Reddick, get abc
A'sFanDFW - February 15, 2012
That's what I would expect. You have a few extra guys come out of Spring Training fairly solid,
there might be a match to be made somewhere. My question is which teams are a little light in the OF department?
LoneStranger - February 15, 2012
The projection gives Cespedes 2.8 WAR
in both CF and RF. Isn’t there a positional adjustment in calculating WAR? Or am I wrong? I quite frequently am.
Degolas - February 14, 2012
You're right
I just used the CF projection is the baseline.
David Fung - February 14, 2012
Where did you get the Cespedes projection btw?
I couldn’t find it.
Geronimo Berroa - February 14, 2012
What is the formula for calculating 2012 WAR?
Your totals are based on CAIRO projections?
iglew - February 14, 2012
Yes.
That’s it, I didn’t do anything special.
David Fung - February 14, 2012
Reddick
The SBN story currently linked in the sidebar says that Reddick fouls off a lot of pitches. That doesn’t seem like it would play well at the Coliseum.
iglew - February 14, 2012
Of course, his first pop foul might stop him from fouling off a bunch of others.
Nico - February 14, 2012
A lot can change, but Slusser has it as Crisp-Cespedes-Reddick (from LF to RF)
Seems like that might not be the best use of our resources.
Reddick is a bit of a wild card, but his doubles power should play better in the Coliseum than at Fenway. In the field I imagine he will be very good. But he could crash and burn. His numbers don’t exactly wow me.
Unfortunately, unless we can trade Seth Smith, Cowgill is starting in AAA. I would have liked him as a 5th OF.
Crisp and Gomes cannot be traded because they were signed as free agents. Thus, I believe Smith will be flipped. There are about 3-4 teams that could use him, and keeping him just to DH seems like a waste. I think we can get a good prospect and losing a league average hitter at the DH position probably doesn’t hurt us, we could probably rotate in players that will amount to league average or bank on one of our 1B/DH types grabbing the bull by the horn.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
The 40-man roster is the real problem
The A’s will probably want to keep Smith until they figure out how close Cespedes is to being a major leaguer. But someone has to go in around ten days, and then someone else (or two guys) will also have to go when the A’s pick up a couple of relievers, or a reliever and another starter.
Pretty obvious that Taylor is first in line to be DFA’d. But after that ….
richwol1 - February 14, 2012
Good point...but it seems like there's other players we can drop before making really tough decisions
Doolittle, Figueroa, or some relievers like Norberto come to mind.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
There's no reason for the A's not to DFA a pitcher like Neil Wagner
who has very little upside and is utterly replaceable.
wcmori - February 14, 2012
this
id much rather risk DFAing the next bobby jenks than the next nelson cruz
NRC - February 14, 2012
Exactly
But I’m really wondering what is the plan for Taylor from here on out. I don’t want to give up on him because he could become something good, but at the same time it doesn’t appear he will find a place on the team this year. AAA couldn’t hurt, but at 27 it really is now or never. It really a tough decision to make. Another move could improve the situation for Taylor, maybe if Smith is traded, or perhaps Crisp at the deadline which would open a spot for him on the 25 man roster. Either way, it will require Taylor to show some sign of life by putting up good numbers for the A’s to notice him again as a possible option.
JJ209 - February 14, 2012
Problem is...
Something has to be done now, or in the next couple of weeks. Anywhere from one to three players will have to be dropped from the 40-man roster.
That’s why the MLB team isn’t important right now. It will get sorted out down the road. But before we come to that road, some folks have to be moved.
richwol1 - February 14, 2012
I'd prefer them to DFA
Sean Doolittle – what has the guy done? He’s thrown 1 minor league inning? Talk about wasting precious space on the 40 man, and it’s not as though anyone is likely to claim him, so there’s a good chance he could still be retained. After Doolittle, I’d still prefer them to DFA Figueroa rather than Wagner. Wagner has shown he can actually get a few guys out in the bigs. Figueroa hasn’t even shown that he can stay healthy.
oakballnack - February 15, 2012
I would rather they DFA Kila.
Same 2011 MiLB slash line, but Taylor has more upside, IMO.
Tutu-late - February 16, 2012
makes sense
btw everything go well with the surgery?
Billy Frijoles - February 16, 2012 via Android app
Yes, thank you.
Polyps, but all benign. First knee replacement is set for April 16th. 2nd, about 3-4 moths later. WooHoo! ☺
Tutu-late - February 16, 2012
Do you know what's amazing?
If rather than 3 outfielders, the Mariners used 9 comparible outfielders in 2011 (playing all at the same time, mind you), they still wouldn’t have matched the outfield WAR of any other team in the AL West. That’s crazy bad. On the other hand, not a lot of fly balls would drop in for hits. :-)
Vaillant - February 14, 2012
Who is better, Darvish or Cespedes?
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
Darvish
And it isn’t close.
DrDoom - February 14, 2012
Cespedes
because I want it to be true.
Nico - February 14, 2012
This
A'sFanDFW - February 15, 2012
I don't think you know that yet...
I would say “most likely Darvish”
elBONESAW - February 14, 2012
He did hedge.
He could have said “Darve!” but he only said “Darvish”.
Nico - February 14, 2012
I see what you did there
DrDoom - February 14, 2012
Didn't I read that Darvish played with a different size ball in Japan?
That is so weird. Maybe that will hold him back, while Cespedes just thinks MLB pitching is like a bunch of big fat balloons.
paris7 - February 14, 2012
Probably will be better in 2012?
Darvish. Who has potential to be 5 WAR+? Cespedes.
cuppingmaster - February 14, 2012
I like Cespedes and the signing but lets be realistic
On the open market Yu commanded three times as much. And I think he is younger. He should be better than Cespedes now and in the future. I’d love to be wrong but the odds are against it.
DrDoom - February 14, 2012
I disagree
I don’t care much about what he has to say generally, but Curt Schilling was on Baseball Today last week and was sharing his thoughts on why Japanese pitchers don’t have as much success as hoped. He was saying how the pitching philosophy there is so different, that when pitchers come here and transition into American/MLB-style philosophies, that it disrupts all aspects of their performance.
Take that in comparison to hitting philosophies, which, while different, don’t involve such fundamental changes in process. Plus, the track record of Cuban hitters isn’t the greatest, but it’s probably better than the track record for Japanese pitchers. Do I think Darvish has a chance to be the best Japanese pitcher ever? Sure. But, I’ll take Cespedes’ upside over his, or any pitcher’s, any day.
cuppingmaster - February 15, 2012
It wasn't exactly akin to an open market
It was a sealed bid system and then a negotiation with a single team.
It’s possible an open market could have yielded a lower total (posting + salary) or higher.
Billy Frijoles - February 15, 2012
(but to your larger point)
Yes he seems to be valued a lot higher by MLB teams. I think it’s because of the performance sample they have to base it on. Darvish is much more of a known quantity than Cespedes. I think that extra risk w/Cespedes pushes the price down, so I don’t think the market price is the best indicator.
It seems like some Japanese pitchers come here and have instant success (Sasaki, Nomo, Matsuzaka) but then tail off. I am inclined to agree with Cup, 2012 will go to Darvish but they could be pretty even down the road.
Billy Frijoles - February 15, 2012
Gomes
What is this idea that Gomes is a lock to make the team? He can be cut and the A’s only pay him a percentage of his contract or traded.
With a full spring training ahead, I hope the A’s give every chance for Taylor and Cowgill to beat out Gomes.
The players that should be thinking about looking for a new job are Moss, Pridie, Fiorentino and Hunter.
And what does Sacramento’s outfield look like? Is Green there, or do they give him a few more months at AA to learn outfield?
dougald1 - February 14, 2012
Gomes
I think it’s mostly b/c Gomes is a lefty-masher, which has value. Neither Taylor or Cowgill has proven yet they have any value in the majors and Taylor in particular hasn’t lit the world on fire in Sacto. Though yes, they should definitely be given the chance to beat out Gomes. It would seem at this point that Gomes is the first bat off the bench at the very least, and possibly the second half of a DH platoon with some random time in the outfield.
jdr - February 14, 2012
I did not know they could cut him and just pay a fraction of his contract.
Billy Frijoles - February 14, 2012
I was under the impression that that rule only applied to arbitration-offered, under-control players
And non-guaranteed contracts. I’m pretty sure that Gomes is guaranteed that $1 Million, as long as he doesn’t void the contract. (Has that ever actually happened?) Anyway, $1 Million is small enough that it wouldn’t matter much if Gomes didn’t even play.
Furyan - February 14, 2012
That was my impression, too.
Too bad Paul Thomas isn’t here. He was really good with that kind of stuff.
iglew - February 15, 2012
According to Cots, Gomes was simply signed as a free agent to a 1 year / $1M major league contract
In which case, I’d assume he’s owed the $1M no matter what.
Nico - February 15, 2012
even so
the A’s are on the hook for the million, that is not a great deal. And if Gomes is cut and signes with another team, that other team will pay Gomes the MLB minimum or something like 500K.
Also it may be that if Gomes is DFA, and is not claimed, the A’s can send him down to AAA. If he refuses, he may lose out on the million contract. Not sure about this
dougald1 - February 16, 2012
At this moment...
Cowgill-Green-Taylor, LF to RF…
With Carter at 1B and Moss and Hunter as DH/OF bench.
crfan2010 - February 14, 2012
of course
coachmmm - February 14, 2012
Umm...who is Hunter?
And why does he get a look ahead of Taylor or Allen? Hell, I liked the idea 2 months ago, but I don’t know why Brandon Moss would. Keeping either before Taylor or especially Allen would be an awful move, and, again, unless his name is Jim, I don’t even know who Hunter is.
RyanFromBonas - February 14, 2012
I think crfan2010 is answering about the Sacramento OF.
Nico - February 14, 2012
Ahh, got it. And apparently his name is Cedric Hunter.
If we’re talking Sacto, I’m all for Moss going (growing?) there. Taylor can’t be out of options, can he, so why can’t he go there if the alternative (as some suggest) is DFA’ing him.
In other news, Wes Timmons is BACK for another go-round in Sacto. At 33 come July, he’s getting a little old for his league, as they say.
RyanFromBonas - February 14, 2012
My personal prediction is that in Sac
you probably will see Taylor, who will be told “OPS 1.000 and force your way back,” along with Jermaine Mitchell (recovering from knee surgery), and possibly Grant Green but more likely Cowgill (awaiting the first injury).
Nico - February 14, 2012
We would DFA him to get him off the 40 man
He’ll be in AAA no matter what – he’s definitely not making the 25 man
A'sFanDFW - February 15, 2012
DFA
If the A’s DFA Taylor, he will get picked by some other team and be gone. I find it hard to believe he is low man on the 40 man and thus next to go.
dougald1 - February 16, 2012
So ugh...after the big Cespedes signing, what is the A's opening night 25-man roster projected to be?
My shot in the dark…apologies for being 1/2 clueless :(
McCarthy, Colon, Milone, Ross, Godfrey, Fuentes, Balfour, FDLS, Devine, Veteran addition (Gonzalez for example), Blevins, Cook, Suzuki, Decker, Weekes, Sizemore, Pennington, Rosales, Barton, Gomes, Smith, Reddick, Crisp, Cespedes?
So…are Cowgill, Taylor, Carter, Powell, and Allen stuck filling out the C/1B/DH/OF positions in Sacramento, respectively ,then?
Also, what happens when Anderson/Braden come back? Milone and Ross go back to Sacramento? What does the Sacramento roster look like other than the guys I mentioned?
Sorry for all this nonsense…just trying to get up to date with the A’s. :)
Dmitriy - February 14, 2012
My guesses as to what's different from your conjectures:
- Powell or Donaldson, not Decker.
- Devine may well start with DL / AAA if he looks shaky
- Allen makes the Opening Day roster b/c Barton isn’t ready for Opening Day
- Parker and/or Peacock cracks the starting rotation over Godfrey and/or Ross
Otherwise…yeah.
Nico - February 14, 2012
Ok thanks!
Dmitriy - February 14, 2012
However...
Didn’t Susan Slusser write last week that it would be Kila K. who’d be getting the first shot at first base, that the A’s were intrigued by his power? (Even if the rest of us are not).
richwol1 - February 14, 2012
Devine
MLBtraderumors has Davine out options, so if Devine goes down it will only be because he is on the DL
dougald1 - February 15, 2012
I'm thinking DL + rehab to start the year as a possibility
Nico - February 15, 2012
did Devine have a surgery?
If not, won’t he be healthy to start the year? How can DL be an option?
Billy Frijoles - February 15, 2012
He did, and has never really recovered to be 100% so far,
but I guess he’s too far removed from it to use it as a reason just so you don’t have to use “he still sucks”.
Nico - February 15, 2012
Barton will not be able to field for the first month of the season.
I don’t think they will use a 25-man roster spot on him until he is 100%. I think this is the best opportunity for one of Allen, Carter, or Kila to distinguish themselves and take that job. It is wide open without Barton in the picture. Barton was abysmal last year so if they have someone who is playing well at the MLB level, it is unlikely he will get his job back.
Billy Frijoles - February 15, 2012
I'm crossing my fingers that Allen gets that window of opportunity,
takes off and never looks back. He’s the only one I think could do that.
Nico - February 15, 2012
Let's hope he learns to hit breaking stuff and make adjustments
I thought he was God Awful the last month.
Trainman - February 16, 2012
what's the problem with a log jam?
It’s a really long season. People will get playing time. I understand the fact that a young player needs continuous at bats to find a rythm and learn from their mistakes. And I understand players can get blocked, but they get blocked by guys like Derek Jeter, not anyone on the A’s roster.
It’s like the stock market, how long are you going to hold onto that dog while waiting for it to soar? Why don’t we buy a bunch of highly rated stocks, and the ones that take off early, we’ll keep, ala Jemile Weeks. We’ll sell the ones that are stagnant (Michael Taylor?) and let some other sucker wait for his investment to pay off, if ever.
elephantman - February 14, 2012
Exactly.
Coco Crisp, Seth Smith, and Johnny Gomes are not going to really block anyone. If someone is better, they will play.
Billy Frijoles - February 15, 2012
The problem with the logjam is the 40-man roster.
It’s no problem letting some guys play in Sacramento looking to earn their promotion (or waiting for an injury), so the 25-man roster isn’t an issue. But the 40-man is an issue if we can’t fit everyone. There are a couple of guys there who could be spared (eg, Doolittle), but our logjam is bad enough now that there’s some risk of having to waive a guy that will be picked up by another team.
iglew - February 15, 2012
Just goes to show how quickly things can change
When the off-season started, having to deal with too many major league ready outfielders on the roster was not a problem I thought the A’s would have to deal with.
I’m not sure how everything will shake out but it should be interesting.
OkayJay81 - February 14, 2012

richwol1 - February 15, 2012
60 day
A few months back I went looking for when players started to affear on the 60 day DL. And as I recall it was not until mid March. So while 60 day will help, it might only help if say for example Powell is needed to be added back on to the 40 man at the end of spring training.

If Yoenis does end up playing CF, we need to nickname him “Demigod”.

Also, I suspect that
Bob Melvin will use his charm to convience Demigod that show-casisng his arm in right field will be good for his career, and that is where he will be in Tokyo, on opening night.
