So Billy Beane finally got frustrated and decided to manage an English Premier League team.*
He left you in charge. Good luck.
Do well, and George Clooney will portray you in Moneyball II.
Do poorly and you'll have to explain to your kids why you're working at Dick's Sporting Goods.
You can do anything you want, really, except for reverse trades or add more than $3 million in payroll this season. No, I don't think Prince Fielder will sign a $3 million contract. Feel that Brian Fuentes is more useful serving garlic fries than pitching in the bullpen? You can make that decision, just be mindful of options.
Put together a 25-man Opening Day roster, and since Billy Beane would've done it anyway, lineups.
*No, not really. Just go along with it.

A's 40-man roster (well, 41 with newly-signed Jonny Gomes):
Here's what I would do, assuming Dallas Braden is not healthy enough for Opening Day (I also gleaned some ideas from David Fung):
STARTING PITCHERS
What would you do?

looking ahead to 2015 I would...
Sell low on Barton and hope Kila and Allen don’t stink it up too bad. Anyone who isn’t under control through 2015 and could conceivably replaced without embarrassment is a potential trade chip at the deadline. Balfour and Fuentes being the obvious pair, but also Colon, Gomes, McCarthy, etc. It would have to depend on our depth at their positions at that point in the season.
DDroney - January 21, 2012
obviously this would depend on things we don't know, like if there is a market for Barton or the other players
DDroney - January 21, 2012
My plan
Say, “Sorry, Manny, we don’t need a 39-year old no longer on PEDs who can’t play for 2 months and then can only take ABs away from guys we need to know more about for 2015.”
With the $3M allotted, I’d try to sign Roy Oswalt as a way to be more competitive in 2012, possibly have a good trade chip come July, and take the pressure off of the young pitchers from having to be accelerated.
Then, since Crisp is already here (personally I would have used 2012 to see whether Reddick or Cowgill could stick in CF):
Lineup vs. LHPs:
Crisp – CF
Weeks – 2B
Carter – DH
Gomes – LF
Sizemore – 3B
Barton – 1B
Suzuki – C
Reddick – RF
Pennington – SS
Lineup vs. RHPs:
Weeks – 2B
Barton – 1B
Carter – DH
Smith – LF
Crisp – CF
Reddick – RF
Sizemore – 3B
Suzuki – C
Pennington – SS
Bench to include Cowgill, Donaldson, and Rosales. Taylor and Allen to AAA to force their way back. (Note: I would not trade Allen.)
Rotation: Aim for McCarthy, Oswalt, Colon, Braden, Milone, and Ross to fill the 5 spots, with Peacock first to slot in and Parker second, as needed. Likely this means an April rotation of McCarthy, Oswalt, Colon, Milone, Peacock.
Bullpen: Balfour, De Los Santos, Fuentes, Wuertz, Blevins, Cook, and others can fight it out for 6 spots, with a true long reliever (e.g., Godfrey) getting the last spot.
And if all that didn’t work, I’d fire Chili Davis and replace him with Cindi.
Nico - January 21, 2012
question
to those who are penciling in barton at 1b. obviously he needs to change and get better; basically why he was demoted..so with that understanding doesn’t he need to prove himself in ST..I view 1B being wide open going into ST…
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
He had an injury and tried to play through.
So yes he has to prove he is back to 2010 form but no I don’t think it is really wide open.
Rio - January 21, 2012
wide open
to the possible 1b on the roster
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
also
he was demoted..then injured
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
Pretty sure he was injured earlier but played through.
Rio - January 21, 2012
No way to really know.
Its possible he was injured after being demoted and used the injury as an excuse. Its also very possible the injury was the reason for his bad play.
JamesS - January 21, 2012
I don't believe anyone even thought this was a possibility at the time.
LoneStranger - January 21, 2012
BARTON
was demoted..then 5weeks later he went on dl in minors fyi
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
Right
But I think it became known then, that the injury actually happened way earlier, but he said no one that he is hurt.
Rio - January 21, 2012
In other words....
He was simply awful.
He later told people that he was injured before he went on the DL. But that means he hurt the team for months because he was injured and continued to play.
Why do people still like this guy? My own feeling is that he used the injury to cover his poor play — but if he didn’t, then he’s a bold-faced liar.
richwol1 - January 21, 2012
So, like Braden did?
Tutu-late - January 21, 2012
I think all players try to hide their injuries.
They love the game, and want to keep playing. I dont think Barton could have kept his injury a secret that long though. The injury may have been a factor in his crappy year, but it was not all of it.
JamesS - January 21, 2012
Yeah, that was my point.
Most players don’t want to become the next Wally Pip, so they play injured. Heck, Cal played with bone breaks. That was the only way he could have broken Lou Gehrig’s record
Tutu-late - January 21, 2012
It's one thing to play with injuries...
…and hide them. It’s another thing to keep playing when it’s obvious your game has fallen apart and you’re hurting the team. Braden didn’t hurt the team. Michael Wuertz has hurt the team, though, and Barton hurt the team.
So what was the outcome? Barton gets sent to the minors for having his game fall apart .. yeah, that’s the way to endear him to management.
If you can play up to snuff through injuries, fine. But if your game tanks, you bite the bullet and go on the Disabled List. Barton’s game tanked from pretty much the start of the season.
richwol1 - January 21, 2012
The main point out of it is this
No matter how bad or outright dumb his actions were. It leaves a really good chance that he gets back to 2010 peformance, if he is now healthy again.
Rio - January 21, 2012
I think that's an unrealistic expectation
His 2010 WAR was based heavily on defense, which is difficult to measure. Also, he had a BABIP well above career average. I’ll be surprised if he’s as good as 2010 or as bad as 2011.
DDroney - January 22, 2012
several players have made a point of distinguishing
between playing hurt and playing injured. Players are expected to play even when something hurts. That’s part of the game. But playing injured is considered bad form. It not only hurts the team but exposes the player to further injury and more time missed.
OaklandSi - January 21, 2012
Sean Dollittle gone
Why he is on the 40 man is a mystery since he will easily go through waivers.
Arcman - January 21, 2012
They don't think he will go through waviers
He was specifically moved to the 40 man roster to protect him from the rule 5 draft.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
He is basically the same as Figueroa
flame-throwing lefty who has done basically nothing to merit a spot on the roster but somebody would likely take a flyer on them. You could basically add Norberto to that group.
I think its time to risk losing one of them. I don’t see many others who can possibly cut from the roster (Kila, maybe Cardenas if he really can’t play infield)
Rio - January 21, 2012
I can't figure out a cool way to say "Norberto."
We should dump him, because who wouldn’t take a flyer on Dr. Dolittle? The coolness factor is actualyl quite high.
paris7 - January 21, 2012
BTW Norberto pitched as a starter in the Dominican winter league
and according to reports he did quite well as a starter. Just saying it might be worth checking out.
OaklandSi - January 21, 2012
can i go back in time
and make Ron Washington the manager over Bob Geren?
falconsfury - January 21, 2012
Good idea.
Then Morgan Freeman can be the guy to get bitch slapped by Beane in Moneyball 2.
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
Give up on Taylor already?
6-6, 250 with speed, played through injury at 25 and paced 20-20. You guys are rough. If Taylor is tearing it up in spring, I predict he breaks camp with the team.
Another possible scenario is Reddick proves he can hit major league pitching, Crisp is traded, Reddick shifts to CF and Taylor is promoted.
At any point, if they get a good offer for Crisp, he’s a goner and Reddick moves to CF.
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
I agree. As much as a bust he can possibly be, it's such a small sample size.
There’s been speculation whether he’s a AAAA player, but I don’t think you should judge his future merely on 35 PA
I would say give him a chance in spring training, see what he can do. If he breaks the time, good for him, but this will be his extended tryout this year.
David Fung - January 21, 2012
I AGREE
if were going to suck well then lets suck all the way and let our AAA/AAAA guys play so we k now if they can hang in the Show…why is BB signing these marginal Fa so we can only kinda suck???
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
would anyone have a good offer?
Why would a team offer up a decent prospect when they could have just signed him.
buddahead9 - January 21, 2012 via mobile
Reasons to Acquire Crisp:
- He outperforms expectations.
- Another team suffers an injury.
- An entire team outperforms expectations, decide to switch gears to win-now mode. (The Giants for example, who are currently relying on Pagan. Not exactly a lock.)
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
I suppose. I just dont think anyone else would place much value on any of our positional players right now.
buddahead9 - January 21, 2012 via mobile
yeah, I'm assuming any return would be modest
DDroney - January 21, 2012
-The A’s pick up part of the money owed to him.
DDroney - January 21, 2012
way too early to give up on this guy
he’s barely had a cup of coffee at the MLB level.
OaklandSi - January 21, 2012
I would have preferred to let the young guys play
We already made the trade for Smith and Signed Gomez. So lets just go all the way with the making the young guys force themselves into the majors. This includes signing Manny and Tejada (as utility) Take any prospect we can get for these guys in midseason trades.
Lineup vs. LHPs:
Crisp – CF
Weeks – 2B
Manny – DH
Gomes – LF
Barton – 1B
Suzuki – C
Reddick – RF
Sizemore – 3B
Pennington – SS
Lineup vs. RHPs:
Crisp – CF
Weeks – 2B
Barton – 1B
Manny – DH
Smith – LF
Reddick – RF
Suzuki – C
Sizemore – 3B
Pennington – SS
Bench: Cowgill, Fat Boy Powell, and Tejada. Taylor, Mitchell, Carter, Allen to AAA the best get promoted but start Carter in place of Manny as DH.
Pitching: Go after all the best FA Oswalt, Penny, and Livan, and get two out of three if possible. (I’m stretching that 3 million a little bit I know)
Rotation:
McCarthy
Oswalt
Livan/Penny
Colon
Ross
Trade: Oswalt/Livan/Penny if they are having a good year.
Milone is the first to get promoted. Braden will take a spot when he’s healthy.
Bullpin:
Closer: FDLS
Setup: Balfour and Devine (back up closer)
LOOGY/Peanut Salesman: Fuentes
Let spring training decide the rest of the bullpen. I don’t want to eat the service time of Peacock or Parker who will not be included in bullpen.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
powell
is working at Bigboys now
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
Tejada is working under Powell.
elBONESAW - January 21, 2012
Powell sucks
But at this point so does Donaldson. There’s no one in the free agent market I’d sign at C, and Norris is not yet ready.
I’d like to trade Suzuki to Detroit for Nick Castellanos, then do Powell and Donaldson at C, but I don’t think the tigers do that trade.
I’d rather have donaldson force us to make him play. Tejada’s old but we’re the F’ing Oakland A’s. He’s about all we can sign that might have some trade value come mid summer.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
Detroit wouldn’t give up Casty for Suzuki. I wish though…
notsukao - January 28, 2012
I have a feeling that Barton is going to be
a new player this year. Maybe I’m wrong but I think sometimes when it takes a guy, especially one as seemingly as naturally talented as Barton, for their back to be pressed up against the wall. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s putting on muscle, working really hard to try and come back and make a statement. It doesn’t mean it will work out, but perhaps Barton is more mature now and realizes that unless he works hard and does things right he’s going to be out of the ML soon.
Just a feeling. I can run with that as the new GM, right?
Tyler Bleszinski - January 21, 2012
he has been there before, and has talked in earlier years of "learning his lesson"
I am not expecting anything one way or the other until he proves that he can and will produce. I’m of course always happy when one of the A’s does so.
OaklandSi - January 21, 2012
Let's just hope that Dale's head isn't pressed up...
against any swimming pool’s shallow end.
the_rozeboom - January 21, 2012
i hope barton
does well also…was his work ethic an issue? i thought it was he wasn’t aggressive enough and couldn’t hit…:)
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
Also
He seemed depressed after his demotion. Almost like he gave up. Wouldn’t suprise me if he retired after spring training or during the middle of Sacramento’s season
StewCrew - January 21, 2012
wow
i knew he was depressed a bit..but he needs to be mentally strong if he is going to earn a spot
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
Pension
Well he’s locked up his MLB pension. I think about $50K per year for the rest of his life. Not too shabby for standing at the plate hoping for a walk for a couple years.
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
Well, there's also the matter of all the scooooops!
paris7 - January 21, 2012
I really want to see Clint Robinson get a chance at the majors
though not really with the A’s…..
JamesS - January 21, 2012
If Barton is over his injury
He’ll get a long look at First base, and I think that Kila will get a good look at DH against righties, with Gomes DH against lefties.
Allen apparently is gone, he strikes out too much. Carter and Taylor need to have a fire lit underneath them to make this team and progress as major leaguers.
coachmmm - January 21, 2012
Who on the 40 man roster has options left?
Hard to decide who to leave off the 25 man roster without knowing.
Hang Man - January 21, 2012
Getting creative
We can’t get Roy Oswalt for three million, but we can get him for 7. I would trade Brandon Allen, Brian Fuentes, and 1MM for an A ball C+ prospect. That saves 4 MM this year, plus the 3 we have, and we sign Oswalt.
SP
Oswalt/McCarthey/Colon/Milone/Ross
RP
Balfour (CL)/de los Santos/Devine/Blevins/Godfrey/Cook/Carnigan
Strict Platoon betwen Smith/Gomes
Carter DH every day, with occasional days off replaced by Gomes/Cowgill
Weeks
Crisp
Barton
Smith/Gomes
Reddick
Sizemore
Suzuki
Carter
Pennington
I don’t see a whole lot of need to switch the order much for L/R since Crisp is a switch hitter, Barton hits about the same against both, and we have a platoon in the 4 hole.
Bench Gomes/Cowgill/Rosales/Recker
I think I might have another spot for a reliever, but I don’t know anything about the relief pitchers that nobody knows about. You can throw whoever you want in there.
A'sFanDFW - January 21, 2012
barton
goes from getting demoted..injured in AAA, TO HITTING 3RD?
oakwin2004 - January 21, 2012
Never know.
If he improves at playing baseball, he might be good.
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
I believe it
the injury ruined his season last year. I suspect he’ll be closer to 2010 than 2011. If he’s half the player he was in 2010 we still get almost 3 WAR.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
Which, while 3 WAR might not impress some people
that would mean that he is an above average ML 1B. Only like 10 1B in the world do better than that every year. Yes, Barton is my 3 hitter.
A'sFanDFW - January 21, 2012
Agreed
I know a lot of people are questioning it. But Barton to me is a no brainer at 1B. Until spring comes along and we see he cannot hit. He should be there.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
If I were Barton, I would show up ready to mash.
There’s a helluva career hanging by a thread, it seems. Blow it now, bounce around getting nothing donw for the next five years. Mash now, lock it down.
paris7 - January 21, 2012
half agreed, I'm kind of worried about that though (trying to mash)
Last year he put on 15 pounds of muscle just to mash. It really screwed him. If he shows patience, is willing to take the outside pitch the other way, and only look to drive the middle-in heat then it’s good.
You’re right though, I don’t see any reason to be any more patient with him now.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
Lock Up Jemile Weeks
15 years, 100 million, backloaded.
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
This is my plan
Starters: 1.Oswalt 2. McCarthy 3. Colon 4. Milone 5. Parker
A good mix of veterans and rookies, and we can afford to pick up Oswalt after we dump Fuentes.
Bullpen: CL De los Santos SU Balfour SU Devine MR Blevins MR Carignan LR Godfrey (Move Milone to LR when Braden returns)

A'sIN - January 21, 2012
Interesting
First of all say no to Manny; no more 1-year contracts for aging vets, especially ones with a bad attitude who’d miss 50 games because of a suspension, anyway.
Release Fuentes, then get Oswalt.
Starting Rotation:
1) Oswalt
2) McCarthy
3) Colon
4) Braden
5) Ross
Bullpen:
1) De Los Santos
2) Devine
3) Milone (Spot Starter/Long Relief)
4) Carignan
5) Blevins
6) Cook
7) Balfour (CL)
Lineup:
1) Weeks (2B)

7) Suzuki ©
8) Carter (DH)
9) Pennington (SS)
Bench:

Bullpen:
1) De Los Santos
2) Devine
3) Godfrey (Spot Starter/Long Relief)

7) Balfour (CL)
Give Parker and Peacock some time in Sacramento; we have depth.
Sean Fortuna - January 21, 2012
Actually,
Trade Fuentes; nothing comes to mind now, though.
Sean Fortuna - January 21, 2012
We'd have to eat most of Fuentes salary
Just to get a C level prospect.
OnlybuyBeaneJerseys - January 21, 2012
That is so sad.
Would his value have been this low if Geren hadn’t treated him so badly last year? Maybe he’ll rebound a bit and can be flipped/sold after a few monthof good LOOGY behavior or even a bit of SU?
paris7 - January 21, 2012
he'd probably fetch more if Melvin uses him properly
OaklandSi - January 21, 2012
Peacock makes the team...
…out of spring.
SheaWasBettor21 - January 21, 2012
My fear is that this team
will actually be a middle of the road, .400 ish team for the next couple years and be relegated to the 12-15th pick again. By adding these vets, I actually think they won’t suck enough to qualify for a top 10 pick. They need to allow the young guys (Taylor, Carter, Cowgill, etc) to take their lumps at the MLB level this year and fully commit to sucking for a bit so we can get some top picks to go with our new prospects. That’s my take.
Dan Bowen - January 21, 2012
I don't disagree.
I just think that the vets we bought can suck lumpily just as easily as the new guys (most of whom are probably ready to be flipped/dumped) can take lumps, and that might bring us back down to the 60-win level.
paris7 - January 21, 2012
Oswalt
Sign Oswalt for 8 million and tell ownership that by half way through the season Fuentes, Balfour, Colon and Oswalt will all be gone. Thus the payroll will not even go up 3 million.
dougald1 - January 21, 2012
2013
The key for 2012 is to find out who should be on the team in 2013 and beyond. The fillers (Gomes, Smith, etc) should be available for any warm body come July. The critical point for me is to find out who can hit a home run in Oakland and I would give Carter the DH slot from day one and Reddick either RF or CF.
Use this season to find out if there are any power hitters the A’s can utilize going forward. All other hitters (except Weeks) should be available.
kimo from kauai - January 21, 2012

Well, they don't have to be against the Yanks or BoSox...

Tutu-late - January 21, 2012
Well I wouldn't get Manny that's for sure.
We need to see what Carter, Taylor, Allen, Barton, Cowgill, Reddick can all do for a season so we can figure out what the next step is!
Now Sonny Smomes signing was interesting, because they are split stars. That’s a cool Beane move. Crisp is useless, Manny would be useless. I really wanted to see our young guys try it out and hopefully we lose 100 games and get a top pick. I guess Beane is scared that the Coliseum will literally be empty if we become that bad.

need to find a way to make revenue to get actual major league talent....
what did the Giants make the most money on other than their ballpark? Answer: Panda hats and Giraffe hats. So I would start mass producing Elephant and Ostrich hats (one that makes complete sense and another that makes zero sense just like the Giraffe hat).
With this newfound windfall from animal hat sales revenue, I call the mets and give them watever they want for David Wright. I’d package a bundle of Barton, Suzuki, Pennington, and Rosales and try to trade them for a middle infielder that hits better than Nick Punto.
JimBarnett2KevinGarnett - January 21, 2012
First move I make
Is there are too many players with the number “-”.
Especially with the A’s of late, how is anyone going to know who anyone is if everyone has the same dash for a number!
dwishinsky - January 21, 2012
Agree with the vast majority of this post
But the biggest exception is Tyson Ross. I think lots of folks are being way too optimistic about him at this point. He’s totally struggled ever since his last injury – 7.61 ERA at Sacramento and 5.94 ERA in the Arizona Fall League. I think he’s really going to need to prove he’s ready to be effective again before anyone should be ready to count on him for too much.
wcmori - January 22, 2012
There's really no one else to put there
The AAAA/back end of the rotation flexibility is now in Colorado.
YonYonson - January 22, 2012
I'd say Godfrey's the most legit option at this point
followed by Peacock, who fared well at AAA and in his very brief look in the bigs last year.
wcmori - January 22, 2012
I think Peacock will make the team out of spring training
But that still leaves only McCarthy, Colon, Peacock, and Milone, meaning either Parker has to make it as well or Ross has to be ready, or Godfrey it is.
Nico - January 22, 2012
If Ross isn't ready
I think they’ll go with Godfrey and Peacock. I think if they’re going to be careful with anyone, it’ll be Parker. But it’s always possible he’ll bowl ‘em over so much in the spring that they won’t be able to resist.
