I learned recently that fireplaces actually bring down the actual temperature.

My firefighter friend was telling me about this. Because the fire needs so much oxygen, it pulls in a lot of air, which means that every leaky window and door in your house is pulling in cold outside air.

The house I grew up in in Minnesota was the only one on our block that didn’t have a fireplace. We were on a little private road that was the end of a power line, and nearly every winter there’d be an ice or wet snow storm that would break enough branches that we’d lose our power for a few days. On the second day of the outage, the neighbors would invite us over to get cozy in front of their roaring fires. By the third and fourth days, we’d be inviting them over to our not-warm but not-freezing house.

I remember my parents investigating Swedish fireplaces

We didn’t have a fireplace because the house was contemporary, basically an Eichler in the Big Woods, and both the architect and my mom felt the look of a fireplace was not in keeping with the rest of the style.

I don't know what a Swedish fireplace is.

Nor do I know who Eichler is. But I get your point.

The one time I met Michael Lewis, which was back when he was still mostly known as Tabitha Soren’s husband, they were renting one in Palo Alto. Very nice, unpretentious houses that look like this:

However, it didn’t translate very well to Minnesota…the flat roof leaked when the snow built up on it, and the walls of glass were freaking freezing for six months of the year.

It looks great for a moderate climate.

Beautiful and bright. Obviously not good in Minnesota, as you say, and I’d hate all that glass in a hot place.

I heard that a lot of poeple in the far north used outside wood boilers, then transfered the hot water into baseboard heaters.

When I build a house, I want radiant heating.

The best heat, IMO.

No allergies from the smoke, won’t “eat” the oxygen in the house, no hot and cold spots.

And more efficient, I would think.

My aunt and uncle live in FC, and I've seen houses of this type in their area.

Joseph Eichler was a great guy, by all accounts

from Wikipedia:

One of his stated aims was to construct inclusive and diverse planned communities, ideally featuring integrated parks and community centers. Eichler, unlike most builders at the time, established a non-discrimination policy and offered homes for sale to anyone of any religion or race.

It’s hard to imagine now, but restrictive covenants were commonplace throughout the US. Before they built the house with no fireplace, my parents and several of their friends had put down deposits on some lots in a leafy suburb. One of their friends was an architect and she was going to design all of the houses. Then the developer pointed out that while the architect was welcome to design in that neighborhood, she couldn’t live there herself, because she was Jewish. The whole group canceled their plans, of course, but the developer wouldn’t give them the deposits back. This was in the early 1960’s.

It seems to me that anything that has a fire would have the same effect as a fireplace. The only advantage to a Swedish fireplace or a Franklin stove would be that by putting it in the center of the room, it can radiate heat throughout instead of losing heat on 3 sides.

I’m not aware at all of a "ban list" of people who will no longer be able to access AN after tomorrow. There may be people who, in reaction to whatever goes out, decide to leave in a blaze of glory with comments that might make them banned. But no one is being banned instantly as a result of a list of undesirable users. Just my two cents worth.

On the serious side, I make jokes, but am concerned about cancer. The real relief is when the results come back.

All of these early-detection mechanisms have their up- and down-sides, for sure

The downside is that we’re having more testing, more worries, more procedures; that there may be too many false positives; that even a lot of the cancers, because they’re being found at earlier and earlier stages, may be ones that would never actually go beyond the site they’re discovered in. I’m not quite a year out from the end of radiation treatment for a tiny smidge of early-stage breast cancer. I’m not sure I did the right thing by having that treatment — I have some residual stiffness in my arm and shoulder on that side, though it’s getting better. But you do the best you can with the information and resources you’ve got, hoping that an ounce or two of prevention will serve you well down the road.

I have a degree in chemistry. I’m looking for chemistry jobs, and the market is rough enough as it is. What happens if I do get the scouting job and later decide it’s not for me? I’d have this weird baseball scouting job on my resume, and nothing else relevant.

SBN has all sorts of techno-awesome.

That’s why I was so eager to get the community to compromise with the SBN overlords and have it both ways.

If the community could have just played nicey-nice with SBN’s needs and sensitivities instead of being all “what-ever! I do what I want!” we could have still had the community we want without having to go somewhere else.

I guess it’s a question of whether you think having to kiss ass a little is worth it. Me, I don’t mind kissing ass so much.

I feels sort of weird to say it,

but the no meta policy is sort of a dealbreaker for me. I don’t think we can have the community I want without being able to discuss that sort of thing.

My perspective is that the rule is there to make sure that things don't get out of hand.

In the future, I wouldn’t be surprised if the rules were relaxed a little.

that PT was complaining about in one of the recent meta-posts — a decree that we have to treat all contributions as equal even if some are clearly better researched, better thought out, or more insightful (or more grammatically correct). Now I’m not saying that point number 2 is explicitly that type of decree, but I’m pretty sure that it’s in there, between the lines.

Surely, a lot of mocking and disrespecting can go away. But if you boil it down, it’s a choice between being all-inclusive or having good content. Look at Tango’s blog. Best content on the internet. Very much not all-inclusive. I liked our balance before.

I also think that it's a false dichotomy

to claim that you have to choose between good content and a welcoming environment. I think that there was a pretty natural hierarchy of content on AN, between front page posts, fANposts that reached the Recommended section, all the rest of the fANposts, the fANshots (I still wish that section would get more attention), and of course the comments. No one felt like comments all had to be researched and regressed, and while some people get annoyed about crappy fANposts, they usually only lasted a couple of days on the sidebar. It seemed like anyone who spent any time with the AN community had a pretty good idea of where to find a good venue for whatever thoughts they wanted to express.

Maybe I'm unobservant,

or have a bad memory, but I mostly recall bad fANposts getting ignored… like 12 comments or so. There have been issues with users who create a flood of bad fANposts, but that is a legitimate issue for mods to deal with.

The fanshots problem is purely technical.

Once you enter a fanpost, you no longer see the fanshots on the sidebar. So your only entry is from the front page.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I come on to AN, I enter into a fanpost and then I bounce around from fanpost to fanpost after that. So I hardly even notice the fanshots.

It’s the same reason why yesterday’s front page post dies faster than a regular fanpost that can stay alive for a week.

I have often wished that I could click over to a fANshot from inside a fANpost page. I think it’s even true that the fANshot sidebar disappears when you are looking at another fANshot!

Question for tech-inclined moderators:

Is this universal to SBN, or is it something that can be changed? I remember there was a tool for tweaking the look of the front page, but I never attempted to do anything there. Is it possible there to make the FanShot list appear on the sidebar of a FanPost or FanShot page? Danbot, do you still have access to that tool?

Our balance had been knocked out of whack by some unusual events. What was needed was to re-stabilize it, re-establish the status quo ante, and then maybe pay a little more attention next time to what keeps us in balance. But the balance itself was well-placed and I’m sorry they moved the fulcrum.

Reminds me of a skit from SNL (the most recent one, I think),

about how members of the YouTube generation are told they can do anything! No matter if they actually are intelligent or talented in some way — as long as they try (and not even very hard), they’re perfect.

I agree with the goal of being respectful, etc, but if that means patting all posters on the back for simply trying to talk about baseball, rather than attempting to teach them something or engage them in a productive dialogue? I’m out.

I had a feeling this was the direction things were headed in and while on the surface, “be respectful to one another” is a good goal, I cannot with good conscience participate further in a place where public criticism and conversation is not allowed unless it’s done a certain way, be it in relation to the site and how it’s run or anything else.

I have always believed an open and transparent way of running things is the best way to go, warts and all, and I believe sometimes people need a thicker skin when dealing with contrary opinions, but my POV does not fall in line any longer with the way TPTB have decided to go. That’s fine.

It’s been a good run, but adios. I’m out.

I really hope that everyone who is considering leaving AN

Gives it a lot of thought and perhaps has a change of heart. No system is ever going to be perfect, and this has been a trying few weeks – but AN is all about the community. To lose so many great posters over something like this would just make things worse.

I understand why some of you want to leave, and I respect your choice. But AN has been our online A’s home for a long time, and we shouldn’t abandon it because of this clusterf*ck. Maybe I’m just being selfish, but this place won’t be the fun, interesting, maddening and diverse place I’ve always loved without you all.

I know people will be posting/lurking at both, but some are making a decision for one or the other.

The problem for me is that the recent decisions have the effect of saying that AN is not about the community.

That’s what turns me off the most. As someone who has seen the management side of things in communities, these are not the kind of decisions you make when you want to foster community. But perhaps AN is a different beast than what I’ve managed, and maybe the management has a better feel of things than I do. Who knows.

I’m sticking around the Lounge for sure, but I don’t know yet how much I’ll be active outside of it.

in choosing to leave. And that’s fine, I understand. Myself, I really never got into all of the “Infl-Meta” and such. I came to the sight to check out everything Oakland A’s and made some good friends here. At a certain point, I became a little weary of commenting on “AN” (mind you, not “The Lounge”) because of “bullying” and threads that became like diatribes for certain people. Not what I really had in mind, originally.

i know public forums take on lives of their own and folks like to debate endlessly about many things. It just seems that the focus of things around AN lately have nothing to do with baseball but with personal issues and supposed injustices. I just hope some of the more gifted contributors to this site remember why this site was started in the first place….“to examine, discuss, brainstorm, debate, and chew the fat about everything Oakland A’s Baseball Baby!”

I kinda like The Walking Dead

It’s sins seems less mortal to me: characters you couldn’t possible care about and plot lines (especially in Season 2) that amount to treading water. As well as the fact that it’s written by people with a second-grader’s understanding of the way the world works (e.g. crucifixes showing up in Baptist churches; an inability to distinquish Plan B from RU-486).

Still worth it for the cool zombie moments (e.g. Zombie Hanging By the Neck, Zombie in the Well, Barn Becomes Zombie Shooting Gallery).

It’s not actual quality tv. It’s crap. But it’s often enough riveting crap that I stick with it.

What put The Killing beyond the pale for me was its shear narrative dishonesty of it: the show tells us things that turn out to be false. Unreliable narrators can be tricky things. But in essentially third-person narratives like The Killing, they quickly turn into the sloppiest sort of story telling, in which the show progresses just by its rampant dishonesty about events and characters.

I even prefer the world of The Walking Dead, in which characters are cardboard cutouts and nothing ever happens. At least I’m not being lied to.

I completely agree with those first three paragraphs.

It’s still compelling, in a bizarre “this is bad” way. But compelling it is.

We think your husband is the awesomest player in MLB.

We also think the awesomest thing the Oakland A’s ever do on the field is wear those cool stirrup socks. We love that so much that we’re sad about losing Josh Outman, even though he was a mediocre pitcher who hadn’t even played for us in more than a year and honestly had nothing going for him except a silly name and he used to have that weird over-the-head delivery many years ago and of course he wore STIRRUPS. We even miss Corey Wimberley even though he’s a minor-leaguer who I think never even made it to the big leagues but he did backflips and always wore STIRRUPS.

So anyway, we were thinking. It would make us ecstatically happy if the two awesomes were to somehow come together with the awesomest fashion accessory on the awesomest player. So could you please persuade your husband to wear the cool stirrup socks?

So I was speaking to an A’s fan today and he asked that folks be aware of a place where they can wish their favorite elcroata a belated happy 40th. No pressure, just a nice safe place to lounge around.

You had my hopes up for a new elcroata-run site, but it’s just a wing of that other place we already know.

Supposedly elcroata is putting together a site of some type.

a place to post his work, not another A’s community type site…

First let me preface this to say, I don’t know who you are and I have no quarrels with you at all. The tenor of this post isn’t meant to be an attack on you, just been bubbling up of the past weeks or so.

If people every wondered one of my main reasons why I’ll never join FK it is posts like these.

If you are gonna leave, and I respect everyone decision to do so for whatever the reason is, just go. Stop with the posts come here (FK) it is better then AN. It is a slap in the face to those of us who have made the choice to stay here. You want to recruit people to come along, fine. But have the decency to do via emails, FB, etc instead of openly trying to get more people to leave. All posts like this serve is to further fragment a pretty fucking fragmented community as is.

if I recall correctly, FK has never posted a link to their site on AN, other than in user profiles, and they have always made it clear that if anyone wanted the URL, they could ask one of the FK users. But I don’t recall there ever being a specific post linking to their site. (I may be wrong, but it is my recollection that this has not been done prior to the post above). Posting a public link to one site from the other just feels wrong.

No it hasn't but there has been tacit recruitment in here specifically over the course of events

I for one am glad somebody posted this link

If the link that was provided sounded like a recruitment tool, let me be clear. Last time I checked there was no incentive monetary or otherwise for pretty much all of us here and there to “recruit” or whatever you’d like to call it. It was exactly what it was said to be. A person asked if someone could do something and I had the time and felt like it would be nice in case someone wanted to wish a person happy b-day. There has been plenty of talk about how to get places who wants who to go where, etc so if this made me the magic 1,000,000th customer so be it.

I’d speak further but obviously don’t want to start rehashing verbotten topics. And I agree with your sentiment-we all make choices and we move ahead. End of the day we support the same team and we live our lives..

Let’s do some good!

To be fair

I haven’t been told many times. I know AN is our internet A’s home, but I feel like people should at least know their options. Then most of them can do what I did, which is visit FK, check it out, and ultimately resolve that AN is the place I want to be. Although certain policies may change that (unfortunately).

See, I was at this other place 5Aces mentioned, and followed a link from there to here, but I dunno how to get here on my own.

By here, I mean ANY iteration of the lounge. The only way I ever got to one in the past was to follow the link at the end of a game thread…

from the front page, there is a link on the left side that says "Overflow Game Threads"

click that.

Another way, easier if you're on an iPhone using the AN app

Lounge threads show up under “Story Archives”.
