Okay, trying this again. After a lot of adventures, including an early poor defensive start, the A's have bounced back to tie this game at 3. We head to the ninth; let's score!
I’d match closers and have Bailey pitch the bottom of the 9th through the heart of the order, and then let him go two if the A’s scored in the 10th, or put in Breslow for the 10th if it was tied.
because Bailey doesn’t need any more 2 IP outings. But I think sometimes on the road, managers get too into saving their closer for a lead when if you already have their closer out of the game sometimes you can outlast the home team if you get your best guys in there to keep pace.

He was pretty good and then pitched hurt. Then he said he needed TJ surgery and we said, “Oh no you don’t,” but he had it anyway and it turned out he did.
I slept from end of work til 9pm, watched Top Chef, flipped over and watched “The Hawk” and Steve Stone completely ignore the fact that Ellis was safe on that steal. Literally NOT A WORD.
well, I have successfully not done anything productive tonight.
Although I did have tortellini for dinner (instead of a bagel). And I did throw away the dead cockroach that I found in my kitchen. So I guess those count for something.

His Quintet discs are outstanding as well.
and I was always working – and lazy….. a neighborhood that prided its self on lawn care, green, always mowed. I would find notes on my door “you ought to mow it soon.”
On the fly ball…again, how many of our players do bust it on fly balls like that? We should be pulling guys out of the game on a nightly basis, if this is how things are gonna work.
Second….Geren’s the one that sent him on the pitch, so how can you blame Scott there?
It doesn’t matter how many times people don’t run hard on a fly ball. By the time it’s caught you should be on your way to second anyway specifically because you never know when one will be dropped.
And we don’t know if Geren gave him the steal sign or not. Either way, you’ve got to be aware of what happens on the pitch and at least not slide when you hear contact.
And yes, I will bash someone every time he half-asses it on a ball that's dropped
At the very least, you jog it out and keep your eye on it and be ready to react if it gets misplayed. If it’s caught like it should be, no big deal. If it’s not, your ass better be on second at the least.
Watch the replay, the entire play (Suzuki popping up, him throwing to first for the DP) was about seven seconds. Hairston had slid into second about 3 seconds through the play, meaning he had 4 seconds to get back to the bag. He was halfway or 3/4ths of the way there when the out was recorded.
He’d take a couple seconds ANYWAY to stop, gather, and spin around if he’s running full speed when contact is made ANYWAY, so I really don’t see the difference other than risking injury vs. staying healthy.
How about you go on a baseball diamond, and run to second.
When you’re about 10 feet to the bag, and you hear contact made at the plate, I’d like to you stop in place, and tell me that was a much better decision than spending 2 seconds (holy crap, still can’t figure that out) to run and slide to a stop that limits the chance for injury.
Really, if Hairston does stop right there, 10 feet from the bag, what are the chances he gets back? He’ll need to take a second to gather himself, spin around, and run anyway, so he’d likely end up in the same place.
Remember, he’s running full speed to second because the steal is on ANYWAY, so his two options are to either stop, or run and slide the extra 10 feet into second.
You think he’s fucking halfway to the bag and he just keeps running like an idiot…that’s not how it went down. He was already close to second, so whether he slows down and ends up near second, or slides into second, it doesn’t make any difference.
Whether he’s able to get back to first in time isn’t the point here. I actually agree with you that there probably wasn’t enough time thanks to the ball not being in the air that long.
The point is two seconds should be enough time to figure out “Oh, contact. Better not slide. Run it out instead..” At the least, once he hits the base he can turn right back around and get a head start on going back to first.
Instead, he slid, had to get back up, then find the ball, then start back to first. By the time the ball was tossed for the double play he was just showing up in the picture about halfway to two-thirds back to first when had he stayed on his feet maybe he at least makes it close.
On its own it’s a bad play. Add to the fact he should’ve been on second base to begin with on the fly ball and it looks extra bad.
The issue here is that he probably didn’t realize that the ball had been popped up, especially since the 2nd baseman or shortstop (I don’t know who) went to cover 2nd initially.
Then, he probably broke off second a second or two too late after he finally realized it was popped up.
Maybe he knew contact was made, but didn’t know it was popped up. For that to be figured out, he would’ve had to stop, plant, and turn around to see what happened, then react and run back to first.
Yes, it was a bad play, but it’s not one that can be blamed on Hairston all things considered.
Remember that they’re also in Chicago, so crowd noise could be an issue as far as hearing guys tell you that it was popped up, and so forth.
Basically it indicated that Hairston wasn't paying attention to shit.
Why on earth would you slide into second when the ball has been hit? Why didn’t he realize the ball had been popped up? Did he not hear the base coach, or the crack of the bat? Did he not look back?
Again, Suzuki hadn't made contact that long before Hairston slid into second...
I don’t get what you don’t understand about this. If he’s running full speed, he’d have to stop, plant, turn, and run when he’s 80 feet from first anyway.
Either way, he’s probably out. The ball really wasn’t in the air that long, dude.
8:54:43 – Hairston takes off as Dotel’s foot lands to deliver the pitch
8:54:44 – Suzuki hits a pop up
8:54:46 – Hairston is sliding into second base. In the frozen frame, TY WALLER IS FUCKING SCREAMING AT SECOND BASE.
8:54:50 – Konerko makes the catch. You can see that the second baseman has already run to cover first base. WHERE’S HAIRSTON?
8:54:51 – Second baseman catches the ball flipped from Konerko for the out. WHERE THE FUCK IS HAIRSTON? HE SLID INTO SECOND BASE FIVE SECONDS AGO
8:54:53 – Oh, there he is jogging slowly into the view of the screen.
WHY DID IT TAKE HAIRSTON SEVEN SECONDS TO RUN BACK TO FIRST?
If he slid into second 3 seconds into the play, and the out was made 8 seconds into the play, then that’s 5 seconds, at most.
So yes, now you have an argument. Now you could argue that Hairston should’ve gotten back to the bag there, but he was busting it getting back to first and only started jogging once the out was recorded.
But yes, you’ve got me now. He probably didn’t realize the ball had been popped up until he got into second, which is most likely why he didn’t get back.
What you apparently wanted him to do was stop 10 feet before he gets to the bag, plant, turn around, see that it was popped up (this is all going on behind him), and react and run back. All in 2 seconds.
Him using the pop up slide or slowing standing and running into second standing up wouldn’t have made a difference. He probably slid in the first base, because the shortstop or 2nd baseman went over to cover the bag, meaning if he heard the contact, he assumed it was a grounder. Again, this is all going on behind him, and he’s got two seconds to react to the situation.
Again, dude was not far from second when contact was made
So you expected him to stop on a dime, plan, turn around, realize the ball was popped up, and get back to first, right?
I don’t know what you guys don’t get about this — he wasn’t far off from second when contact was made, and since it was very light contact, it’s possible he didn’t realize it was popped up as he was running to 2nd, considering the crowd noise, etc.
And neither middle infielder went to cover second on the steal? What replay are you watching? When does that not happen? He was already almost at 2nd when the ball was popped up, so there’s no way I believe the infielders just stood where they were because they knew it would be popped up.
He was not almost at second when the ball was popped up because nobody’s that fast, not even Usain Bolt. At best he’s probably about halfway there when contact is made and I guarantee you the middle infielders know where the ball is there.
And once again, nobody is saying “stop on a dime.” We’re saying “pay attention and stay on your feet as you get to second so you can react faster than you did.”
Whatever crowd noise there is – and trust me, it’s not THAT loud in the 13th inning after a couple throws to first – anyone on the infield is close enough to hear the sound the bat makes with the ball, even on a popup.
Again, you're main issue looks to be the slide into second
What’s the difference between slowing down and stopping at second standing up or using the pop up slide, which allows to to get to second faster and retreat to first faster?
Anyway, according to the replay I saw, when the ball went up in the air, and Hairston was about 5-10 feet away from the bag. So maybe he made contact when he was 10-15 feet?
Again, if he’s running full speed, it doesn’t make much of a difference, because he can’t stop on a dime so once contact was made, there’s no way he would’ve made it back. The ball wasn’t in the air very long.
There's a lot of ground that can be covered in a second when you're at full speed
I guarantee you he’s not 10-15 feet from the bag by the time contact is made. If that’s the case he’d never, ever be thrown out stealing.
Either way, pop-up slides don’t really save you a whole lot of time compared to staying up. Maybe he had it in his mind that he was sliding no matter what, and that would seem to fit with how locked in he seemed to be enough to miss the fact the ball was popped up.
Anyway, it’s over, I think the debate’s been made clear, and I’m ready to move on.
Didn’t run it out, ball dropped, he was at first instead of second.
Then, he took off to steal 2nd, ball was popped STRAIGHT UP, and he either ignored the base coach, didn’t look, or is just an idiot and didn’t even get CLOSE to the bag in time to not be doubled off.
Johnny “Poops” McGinty, who should have killed AJ Pierzynski on the schoolyard at age 6 when he had the chance, after the infamous Kit Kat Recess Incident of 1982.

when he dives into shallow pools, but that didn’t stop him last summer…
whiteshoes40 - September 9, 2009

lynnzgal - September 9, 2009
I'm so not with it....
I thought you were talking about his stats!! Takes me a minute.
BERRYJO - September 9, 2009

Only if he sucks as bad as he did when he pitched for us!!
BERRYJO - September 9, 2009
He actually didn't suck that much
He was pretty good and then pitched hurt. Then he said he needed TJ surgery and we said, “Oh no you don’t,” but he had it anyway and it turned out he did.

Larry Davis's Greatest Hits

ohtobe21likehuston - September 9, 2009
I just recollect the bad Octavio.
BERRYJO - September 9, 2009
It started with that first game
and the huge sighs of relief when the game was done and we barely edged the other team out.
He was worse that Izrighausen in that regards.
BleedGreen - September 9, 2009
i remember first game he pitched for us
he struck out the side or something. from there, it was downhill.
cuppingmaster - September 9, 2009
post fail
didn’t he strike out the side or something? anyway, it was a gradual decline as i remember

stormtown - September 9, 2009
Should've for not running hard on the fly ball anyway
Then he compounds it by trying to steal second anyway and gets doubled off.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
I'm just wondering whether it will have an effect on any other player
stormtown - September 9, 2009
Hairston pulled out of the game?
Insane.
On the fly ball…again, how many of our players do bust it on fly balls like that? We should be pulling guys out of the game on a nightly basis, if this is how things are gonna work.
Second….Geren’s the one that sent him on the pitch, so how can you blame Scott there?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Because he made no effort to get back to the bag.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Did he, though?
Was there a replay?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
By the time he was about halfway back to first they were already making the out
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Please stop defending that sequence
It doesn’t matter how many times people don’t run hard on a fly ball. By the time it’s caught you should be on your way to second anyway specifically because you never know when one will be dropped.
And we don’t know if Geren gave him the steal sign or not. Either way, you’ve got to be aware of what happens on the pitch and at least not slide when you hear contact.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
LOL
So then, like I said, guys should be pulled multiple times throughout every game, then?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
*smacks forehead*
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
So...
Will you answer me, or not? 95% of the time guys DON’T run out that ball, just because it dropped once out of a million times he should be?
As for the steal, again, since we didn’t see a replay, how can you blame him for what happened there?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Because he slid for no fucking reason whatsoever.
It was 2 stupid ass plays in a row. He wasn’t even WATCHING the ball when he hit it to CF, he had no idea it dropped.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Except once it did he was going to go for second`
But it was too late
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Had he been running hard, he'd have been standing on second base.
Not fully sprinting. Just RUNNING. You know, like you’re supposed to when you hit the ball?
mikev - September 9, 2009
And once more
I’ll expect to see you bashing the next guy for not running out a similar fly ball.
Flip over to the Dodgers-D-backs game. You’ll see it there. I suppose you’ll be having a fit, right?
There’s a .0000001 chance that the center fielder drops that ball. If he doesn’t, then we’re not having this discussion, are we?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Tonight was the reason you run out everything.
Nuff said.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Yeah, it's that .0000001 percent chance that proves why you, you know, follow the ball the whole way
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
And yes, I will bash someone every time he half-asses it on a ball that's dropped
At the very least, you jog it out and keep your eye on it and be ready to react if it gets misplayed. If it’s caught like it should be, no big deal. If it’s not, your ass better be on second at the least.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
That's what happens when you jog to first looking toward the right field foul pole instead of seeing where the ball is
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
See above, yo
hero66 - September 9, 2009
I already answered you
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Nope, I mean with something, you know, valid.
Watch the replay, the entire play (Suzuki popping up, him throwing to first for the DP) was about seven seconds. Hairston had slid into second about 3 seconds through the play, meaning he had 4 seconds to get back to the bag. He was halfway or 3/4ths of the way there when the out was recorded.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Thank god for the DVR, by the way
And, you know, let’s also thankg God I’m not the one paying for it…
hero66 - September 9, 2009
I count two full seconds from the time contact is made to the time Hairston is sliding into second
That’s enough time to react to the sound of contact being made and see where the ball is. You don’t slide into second that late.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Wow, really?
This is like that dumbshit NFL rule about hitting QB’s. You’re supposed to stop on a dime while running full speed? 2 seconds….2 SECONDS.
Incredible.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Nobody said stop on a dime
But yeah, it would be nice if he didn’t KEEP RUNNING FULL SPEED AND SLIDE INTO THE FUCKING BASE.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Exactly
Stop on a dime? Puh-leeze.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Again
He’d take a couple seconds ANYWAY to stop, gather, and spin around if he’s running full speed when contact is made ANYWAY, so I really don’t see the difference other than risking injury vs. staying healthy.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
No, see, it works like this
You hear contact.
You don’t slide.
You stay on your feet.
You reach the base.
You find the ball.
You react to what you see.
Understand?
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
The difference?
Well, how about being safe vs being out?
mikev - September 9, 2009
Again
He’s out EITHER WAY.
Whether he slides into second OR NOT, because he didn’t slide into second that long after contact is made.
Holy shit, what don’t you understand about this?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
You're wrong.
Stop posting.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Oh definitely, yes
I’m wrong because you said so. Of course.
Why do adults decide to act like children in debates like this?
hero66 - September 9, 2009
you're wrong because you're wrong
it’s been explained several times. You’re the one stomping your feet and saying no, who is acting like a child?
mikev - September 9, 2009
No, it hasn't been explained
I had refuted every thing up to this point but it wasn’t good enough for you guys.
Look back at the argument. Not one of my posts contained just “No”, or “You’re wrong”.
That was you and flash.
Let’s not let facts get in the way of anything, though.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Hasn't been explained several times, that is
hero66 - September 9, 2009
You think that isn't enough time for him to figure maybe he should stay on his feet?
I’m done with this.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Ok
How about you go on a baseball diamond, and run to second.
When you’re about 10 feet to the bag, and you hear contact made at the plate, I’d like to you stop in place, and tell me that was a much better decision than spending 2 seconds (holy crap, still can’t figure that out) to run and slide to a stop that limits the chance for injury.
Really, if Hairston does stop right there, 10 feet from the bag, what are the chances he gets back? He’ll need to take a second to gather himself, spin around, and run anyway, so he’d likely end up in the same place.
And running full speed, remember that.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
You're making the dumbest argument ever.
mikev - September 9, 2009
I'm impressed
What insight.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Are you still stuck on that "stop on a dime" nonsense?
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Yes
That’s what it seems like you wanted him to do.
Remember, he’s running full speed to second because the steal is on ANYWAY, so his two options are to either stop, or run and slide the extra 10 feet into second.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Nope
You keep missing the third option: running it out and slowing down as you get to second so you can more quckly react to the play.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
BUT HE WASN'T FAR FROM SECOND WHEN CONTACT WAS MADE
hero66 - September 9, 2009
What. Ever.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
That's what you guys keep ignoring..
You think he’s fucking halfway to the bag and he just keeps running like an idiot…that’s not how it went down. He was already close to second, so whether he slows down and ends up near second, or slides into second, it doesn’t make any difference.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Nope
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
I can play this game too
“Yes”
Incredible what people resort to when they’re proven wrong.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Except you haven't proven a thing
Toodles.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
LOL!
Ok then!
ROFL.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
This is the last I'll say on this
Whether he’s able to get back to first in time isn’t the point here.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
It was a pop up slide
The slide is not the issue.
Remember that they’re also in Chicago, so crowd noise could be an issue as far as hearing guys tell you that it was popped up, and so forth.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
(Though he WAS running like an idiot on the fly ball)
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Not to be redundant but if he had not slid??
I really don’t understand that part of your statement.
BERRYJO - September 9, 2009
Just commented above
He slid well after contact was made.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Thanks - OK...I just don't get the significance of the slide vs. running to base standing.....
It has to do with tagging up vs. a steal attempt I’m thinking. I just try to get the small points!!
BERRYJO - September 9, 2009
Basically it indicated that Hairston wasn't paying attention to shit.
Why on earth would you slide into second when the ball has been hit? Why didn’t he realize the ball had been popped up? Did he not hear the base coach, or the crack of the bat? Did he not look back?
It was a mental error.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Yeah I got that...and it came on the heels of another mental error made by the same player
very frustrating…..
BERRYJO - September 9, 2009
Again, Suzuki hadn't made contact that long before Hairston slid into second...
I don’t get what you don’t understand about this. If he’s running full speed, he’d have to stop, plant, turn, and run when he’s 80 feet from first anyway.
Either way, he’s probably out. The ball really wasn’t in the air that long, dude.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
lucky for me, my TV has a second counter on it.
WHY DID IT TAKE HAIRSTON SEVEN SECONDS TO RUN BACK TO FIRST?
mikev - September 9, 2009
5 seconds
If he slid into second 3 seconds into the play, and the out was made 8 seconds into the play, then that’s 5 seconds, at most.
So yes, now you have an argument. Now you could argue that Hairston should’ve gotten back to the bag there, but he was busting it getting back to first and only started jogging once the out was recorded.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Bullshit.
You can see the second baseman bust ass to get to the bag. HE’S THE ONE WHO COVERED FIRST BASE.
There is no excuse for Hairston not making it back. He slid and then stopped. It does not take five seconds to run back to first base.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Well, that can be argued
But yes, you’ve got me now. He probably didn’t realize the ball had been popped up until he got into second, which is most likely why he didn’t get back.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
Which is exactly what we have been saying the entire time.
He wasn’t paying attention. Twice in a row.
This is why he was removed from the game.
mikev - September 9, 2009
This
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Like I said above, though.
Again, this is all going on behind him, and he’s got two seconds to react to the situation.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
No.
What I wanted him to do was PAY ATTENTION.
When a guy is running, when contact is made, usually they look to see where the ball went.
If, like you said, he ASSUMED it was a grounder and just slid, then he got fucking deked. Again: Mental miscue.
However, the replay showed, NEITHER MIDDLE INFIELDER was covering second base. Because it was a popup.
Everybody knew this except Hairston.
mikev - September 9, 2009
Again, dude was not far from second when contact was made
So you expected him to stop on a dime, plan, turn around, realize the ball was popped up, and get back to first, right?
I don’t know what you guys don’t get about this — he wasn’t far off from second when contact was made, and since it was very light contact, it’s possible he didn’t realize it was popped up as he was running to 2nd, considering the crowd noise, etc.
And neither middle infielder went to cover second on the steal? What replay are you watching? When does that not happen? He was already almost at 2nd when the ball was popped up, so there’s no way I believe the infielders just stood where they were because they knew it would be popped up.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
I have to say one more thing
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
Again, you're main issue looks to be the slide into second
What’s the difference between slowing down and stopping at second standing up or using the pop up slide, which allows to to get to second faster and retreat to first faster?
Anyway, according to the replay I saw, when the ball went up in the air, and Hairston was about 5-10 feet away from the bag. So maybe he made contact when he was 10-15 feet?
Again, if he’s running full speed, it doesn’t make much of a difference, because he can’t stop on a dime so once contact was made, there’s no way he would’ve made it back. The ball wasn’t in the air very long.
hero66 - September 9, 2009
There's a lot of ground that can be covered in a second when you're at full speed
I guarantee you he’s not 10-15 feet from the bag by the time contact is made. If that’s the case he’d never, ever be thrown out stealing.
Either way, pop-up slides don’t really save you a whole lot of time compared to staying up. Maybe he had it in his mind that he was sliding no matter what, and that would seem to fit with how locked in he seemed to be enough to miss the fact the ball was popped up.
Anyway, it’s over, I think the debate’s been made clear, and I’m ready to move on.
Flashfire - September 9, 2009
would some kind soul like to summarize for me whatever horrendous thing Hairston did?
whiteshoes40 - September 9, 2009
Flyball to center
Didn’t run it out, ball dropped, he was at first instead of second.
Then, he took off to steal 2nd, ball was popped STRAIGHT UP, and he either ignored the base coach, didn’t look, or is just an idiot and didn’t even get CLOSE to the bag in time to not be doubled off.
mikev - September 9, 2009
aha. Thanks, kind soul.
I now understand the frustration.
whiteshoes40 - September 9, 2009
Patterson should have come in to run for Hairston, then, if Hairston was going to get pulled anyway.
Rated-R Superstar - September 9, 2009
Good point, but assume they wanted to keep Hairston in for offense
worldblee - September 9, 2009
Hairston
pulled like a bad tooth!
emperor nobody - September 9, 2009

ElQuesoCapitan - September 9, 2009

I imagine his popularity has just taken a hit.
emperor nobody - September 9, 2009
No
He always takes shitty routes to flyballs. He’s just fast enough to make up for it. usually.
mikev - September 9, 2009
I'm out
This was disappointing. On the plus side, I’ll be posting from MN on Friday. Short work trip = just enough time to catch a game in the metrodome. :-)

blame of the game
Johnny “Poops” McGinty, who should have killed AJ Pierzynski on the schoolyard at age 6 when he had the chance, after the infamous Kit Kat Recess Incident of 1982.
