In the 3rd inning, it was "four score," and in the 8th inning again it was "four score." How fitting, since seven years ago the A's were riding a historic 20-game winning streak.
Brett Anderson wobbled early -- and I mean it quite literally, as no sooner had the game begun and Anderson was limping off the mound having turned his ankle following through on the pitch. He convinced Geren and the training crew that he was physically fine, cleverly not mentioning that he wouldn't actually pitch well. Anderson gave up 3 runs in the 2nd and the A's trailed early for the 3rd consecutive game.
Fortunately, Luke French really sucks. He served up a two-run HR to Cliff Pennington in the 3rd to make it 3-2 Mariners, and by the time the inning was over Oakland led 4-3. One of those runs was a "Rajai Run," in which Davis tagged up from 1B on a medium fly ball to CF, then stole 3B, and scored on a grounder with the infield in.
The A's would break it open with four more in the 8th, highlighted by matching two-run doubles off the bats of Mark Ellis and Daric Barton. Pennington wound up only a triple short of the cycle and the A's turned in a 13-hit night, helping to make less relevant the fact that Jack Cust does not even catch the fly balls he gets to.
Other notables: Mike Sweeney went 4 for 5 with a HR, while Bill Hall went 0 for 5 with 5 strikeouts. Oops. And despite giving up a 2-run HR to Jose Lopez in the 9th, Andrew Bailey recorded his 22nd save, one shy of the A's rookie record held by Huston Street -- when he won Rookie of the Year in 2005.

OaklandSi - September 5, 2009
B-b-but...But I got the recap up as fast as I could, ma'am.
Nico - September 5, 2009
ROFL spit up my drink from the recap photo and caption
Some day I will figure out the caption widget, before I pass on… then, WATCH OUT AN LOL
Just listened to the highlight package and I just can’t get my head around how Cotroneo is a MLB announcer… his HR call on Pennington basically screamed caught-by-surpriseness, as if to say, wow THAT scrub hit it out, wow didn’t see that one coming. I want his job very badly at this point (Vince, not Cliff… empy is taxed by the slider down and away).
emperor nobody - September 5, 2009
he doesn't have that intangible "voice" that other guys do
I’ve grown accustomed to Korach, and hate to say but other Kuiper has a good voice too. Cotreneo’s voice is just too flat.
cuppingmaster - September 5, 2009
he sounds ill-prepared and kind of juvenile
Not that the radio station is audible outside a 12 block radius of the transmitter site anyway, but his calls of dramatic plays just fall flat on their face, he sounds completely shocked when the A’s score and that isn’t waht you want in a hometown broadcaster. I mean, you don’t need Hawk or Hudler either, but this guy, IMO, just blows, it’s embarrassing and I firmly believe (and I have years of on-air radio experience, altho not in sports) that I could surely do a better job than him. Hell, send my cat to Expression College and she could do it better too LOL

FLY BALL.
CAUGHT.
Reminds me of Major League when Harry Doyle passes out drunk.
mikev - September 5, 2009
when i finally buy the team and install myself as announcer
mike v is my color man!!!
Come on, who among us wouldn’t pay to hear that? LOLOLOL
emperor nobody - September 5, 2009
We should do a taping and start sending it out.
mikev - September 6, 2009
just remember that would make it admissible in court.

Interview with Roy Steele coming
Up next on the radio post game

Great night with my four sisters, and other fam.
Especially my oldest sis, and Aunt Marie, who were on the field during pre-game.
67MARQUEZ - September 5, 2009
sounds like a blast
I almost spontaneously went tonight but got sort of caught up in the Cal football crush in Berkeley.

Hey it was great meeting you last night and sitting with you and your niece for the game...we had a lot of fun!

SEe GUYS HE WAS AT THE GAME!!!
ElQuesoCapitan - September 5, 2009
Fun game tonight and I'm stoked that Brett Anderson bounced back
after struggling early. Nice to see some offense for a change as well. Those blasted Mariners just seem to have the A’s number the past few seasons.
Oh, and almost 76 grand raised for Breat CAncer Awareness…very cool for sure! Go A’s!
mrod - September 5, 2009
Solid game.
It has really hurt to see them flail against the M’s this season. The bullpen, however, looks pretty tired these days. I am a little worried about Bailey and Ziegler.
Axl - September 5, 2009
How about Wuertz?
Another 1.2 IP tonight.
Nico - September 5, 2009
Saying his goodbyes
To his right arm
hero66 - September 5, 2009
Jeff Gray
I think it would be a good idea for Geren to start to use Gray in some more high-leverage situations, and give Wuertz some more time to rest. Gray’s probably the leading candidate at this point to replace Casilla, and the team should test him over the next month.
Nick - September 6, 2009
WE BEAT THE MARINERS!!!
Btw, the photo caption for the women with the doves was probably the funniest in AN history. Well done.
travdog6 - September 5, 2009
Thank you!
I hear dove tastes like chicken. As it well should.
Nico - September 5, 2009
Yea. I especially dug that caption too.
Good work!

That caption was amazing.
Philip Christy - September 6, 2009
I loved it
Flashfire - September 6, 2009
Sactown quickie-summary (lost 5-4):
Wallace HRed (1 for 5), Cardenas 2 for 4, Carter 1 for 5 (4 Ks). Meloan made his debut with 1 scoreless IP. Sam Demel gave up a walk-off 2-run HR.
Nico - September 5, 2009
Carter's been K'ing a lot.
Me no like.
ElQuesoCapitan - September 5, 2009
Looks like Carter had one of his overmatched games
This is why I caution against rushing him too quickly. As good as he can look in one game, he can look just as bad in another.
Flashfire - September 5, 2009
Last night
..in Salt Lake City, a friend of mine went, and said Carter looked awful. Overmatched.
richwol1 - September 5, 2009
Did he strike out 5 times?
that would suck
Future Ed - September 6, 2009
"Did he strike out 5 times?"
No but Bill Hall did to end the game……
:)
mrod - September 6, 2009
I just want to say that I was a little worried during the TeM'se.
LoneStranger - September 5, 2009
Great interview with Steele
Didn’t know he grew up in Hayward, too. I hope he can at least do one more game as announcer. Callahan has a good voice, but Steele IS the Coliseum, whatever it might be called in the future.
cuppingmaster - September 5, 2009
Speaking of which...
Anyone know who did the PA announcing last night? It wasn’t Roy Steele OR Dick Callahan. Whoever it was was almost entirely unintelligible. Please tell me it was only one night off for Callahan and that he’s not sick too. (maybe they should swap out that microphone)
gohlkus - September 6, 2009
It was Hal Ramey
Callahan was doing the Cal game.
Nico - September 6, 2009
Ah, thanks
Glad to know it was just a scheduling conflict.
gohlkus - September 6, 2009
Wow, that was really AWESOME to hear Roy Steele on the radio just now...I don't usually listen to Extra Innings but that was well worth it.
Man, it brought back so many great memories hearing him I really loved that segment. It would be so awesome if his health got better and he was able to come back, he said on the interview that if his health gets better and his voice comes back he will be back. I am definately not counting on it but man that was a very powerful interview. I am so glad that I got to hear the interview…Thanks Athletix man for brining my attention to the interview…I think I almost had a tear in my eye….That was really great!!!
wacchampions - September 5, 2009
I just sent an email message to radio@oaklandathletics.com
to wish Roy Steele the very best. Buan suggested that messages would be appreciated as he strives to regain his health.
OaklandSi - September 5, 2009
I was just looking for an email address for Robert to comment on that interview..Great timing!!
Thanks Oaklandsi…

Home from the game - read through the game threads
With it being ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ day and Barton playing well, I’m surprised no one posted this pic!:

Celebrate good times
Go A’s!
SwisherThresher - September 5, 2009
Can the A's just pencil in Barton and Pennington now
They both will give good defense and whatever offense will be a surpise. I don’t think spending on a short stop is a good idea for 2010. And certainly spending a firstbase person is dumb with the presumed 2011 and beyond crowd. I just as soon see if barton can be OK.
Future Ed - September 6, 2009
true
but I’d rather gamble on Barton again rather than Pennington, who is nothing more than a utility infielder at this point. And I do not want ocab back either. A quality SS prob will be hard to come by in the FA market, so what about trading for one?
sf drift king - September 6, 2009
I think Hardy is the only real trade option.
Unless you wanna go for Hanley, but that would kill our minor league depth.
Philip Christy - September 6, 2009
Really
we’re supposedly so deep in the farm, but yet all we’ve been able to produce outside of good pitching are the likes of: Barton, Pennington, Cunningham, Petit, Everidge, Buck, et al… I’m all in favor of packaging some of these AAAA specs for some proven talent. This is the deepest this team has been in years, and not all of them will be able to make the team, so please Billy, get us some players please.

I went to the game..........
And I was right near Cust.
One of the funniest errors ever.
Waddled to the ball, easily got to it, dropped it, fell over, rolled onto the ball.
It was simultaneously “OH NO” and " LOL!"
It was a really awesome game, and the atmosphere was pumping.
I’ll be in the field box near the A’s dug out today, so obviously Kennedy will make a crazy error to entertain me.
Daniel777 - September 6, 2009
I have never sat in the field box
would love to do that sometime…
I’ll be in 225 today
OaklandSi - September 6, 2009
I think I am somewhere near 225 today!!
wacchampions - September 6, 2009
I'm front row of the field box too......
So if you see a yellow throwback/1970s Hunter jersey in the front row, you know it’s me. :-)
Daniel777 - September 6, 2009
that Cust...
I’m not going to bag on him like a lot of A’s fans because the guy was forced into playing the OF, but geez, he was down right atrocious out there last night. Talk about a comedy of errors… one can’t invent the miscues he had out there. We have our very own “toaster glove” in RF.
