What a difference a season or two makes. The A's have been known to simply dominate Seattle--their 2006 playoff appearance was largely due to the difference in records between the Angels/Seattle and the A's/Seattle games--but not this year. Seattle, combining fantastic defense with equally good pitching, beat the A's for the second consecutive night, behind a strong start by Ryan Rowland-Smith.
Clayton Mortensen pitched a pretty good six innings for the A's, but unfortunately, he was in the game for seven. The second inning, where the Mariners collected 4 of their 6 hits against Mortensen and 2 of his 3 walks, would be the different in the game, as Seattle would score four runs, all with two outs.

Meanwhile, the A's struggled from beginning to end against Rowland-Smith, only managing five hits; two doubles in the third by Sweeney and Kennedy for the A's first run and an unexpected homerun by Nomar Garciaparra following a Hairston single in the seventh.
The game thread provided most of the excitement tonight, but Cliff Pennington did his part in the field, making several difficult plays look easy. Unfortunately, this did not carry over to his bat; he went 0-3 on the night. He wasn't alone. Davis, Suzuki, Ellis, and Crosby also went 0-for.
The A's still have a chance at a split if they can take the next two; Anderson will pitch tomorrow night (6:05 start) against French. See you back on AN! Enjoy the long weekend! (Happy Birthday, ZigFan!)

One positive from Mortenson's performance
Lots of groundball outs.

hisgoodluckcharm - September 4, 2009
Oh that could have been fun!!
wacchampions - September 4, 2009
They messed up all of the starting lineups tonight at the Coliseum....
Like Oaklandsi said they announced both Crosby and Pennington at SS..They also announced that Ken Griffery JR was starting for Seattle….I dont know what the problem was but everything just seemed a bit off tonight at the ol’ ball park!

Oh and by the way I blame all of this loss 100% on hisgoodluckcharm!!
I sat with her, Marquez and DFA for the game and it is definately all her fault that the A’s lost! : )
wacchampions - September 4, 2009
OMG
are u serious
hisgoodluckcharm - September 4, 2009
Yes very, Im not sure if you should be allowed back in the stadium!!
I think it all has to do with your rooting for Bobby Crosby……and everyone in attendance at toinghts game now also knows WHY you root for Bobby Crosby much to the shagrin of Myself, Marquez and DFA!!
wacchampions - September 4, 2009
Because he's pretty?
iglew - September 5, 2009
Ok, Ok...maybe we will let you come back....
wacchampions - September 4, 2009
I was at the game courtesy of wacchampions
And had a great time with him 67Marquez, hisgoosluckcharm, and wacchampions’ non AN friend. Mortenson gave up a lot of two out hits and just fell apart in the second.
Pennington in adition to making a couple on nice plays did botch a chopper as well and as you mentioned does not look like a ML quality bat.

Did I miss anything?
mikev - September 5, 2009

The aforementioned charm
posted “GYMNASTICS” and then claimed to be with you.
Not sure if she was baiting R-Star or ZigFan, but many of us took the bait.

Who?

Nevermind, found it.

AWESOME!!
If we played like this every day, we would have won every single game so far this season.
I wish we had Barry Zito back. When he wears green he pitches better. In Orange he forgets how to pitch. Because Orange is the Orioles colors. And San Francisco smells like fish.
So does Oakland.
bucimislover - September 5, 2009
yesterday I watched Zito face Kendall twice in the SF-Milwaukee game
both times Kendall walked.
OaklandSi - September 5, 2009
He owed Kendall the free passes for getting him thru the 2006 playoff run!
BleedGreen - September 5, 2009
LOL -- and the Giants won the game anyway
OaklandSi - September 5, 2009
Gotta like having a bulldog like
Bengie on your team. He’s a grinder.

Despite their utter futility against Seattle
I hope to go tonight and tomorrow. Go A’s!
(Honestly, I’m only compelled to make the hour long trip because I want a pink pashmina and a ’29 hat.)
SwisherThresher - September 5, 2009
I'll be there tomorrow
Looking forward to the hat — it will go well with the 1929 jersey.
OaklandSi - September 5, 2009
I just hope I can drag the little woman
to get there in time.
