Well, there isn't much to say about tonight's game, unless Morrow is on your fantasy team.
In the fourth inning, Rajai Davis hit a ground ball to the shortstop and beat it out for an infield single. The A's collected two back-to-back walks in the eighth, and in the ninth inning, with two outs, Landon Powell singled to right.
That was the entire extent of the A's offense tonight as Brandon Morrow nearly tossed a perfect game.
This is usually the point where I make fun of the A's offense, but I just can't this time. I don't know how to tell you this, but the A's just flat got out-pitched tonight by Brandon Morrow, who was throwing the game of his life. He would finish up with 8 innings pitched, one hit, two walks, and nine strikeouts. He was dominant in every way, and the A's never had a chance to score in this game, much less to win.
The victory tonight by Seattle gave them a winning season (pretty impressive coming off of last year). They racked up seven runs tonight, all but one of them coming off Mortensen, who allowed six runs on eight hits (no walks or strikeouts). I don't think that start was what he was looking for to close out the season. I did notice he looked calm.
Mortensen was relieved by Kilby, Gray, Meloan, and Henry Rodriguez, who all pitched well (Gray allowed the only run on a solo HR). Rodriguez hit the gun at 100 MPH, while Morrow was dealing around 97.
The A's and M's try it again tomorrow night; 7:05 start time.

Have the As ever considered just starting relievers?
Get between 1 and 3 innings from a couple or three or four guys, tell ‘em to throw like it’s the 6th. Comes out mostly like today’s game, except the score is 1-0 instead of 7-0.

At least it was pleasant watching HRod gas hitters with 101 on the gun. Man, I hope that guy fixes whatever is ailing him and holding him back in the minors. Nothing better than watching a guy who can throw like that lay in a breaking pitch at a mere 90 mph.

Dont give up on Mortensen
Late last yr most thought braden/outman were in that same category. Fringe depth SP or reliever. Mortensen has been rushed through the minors by Cards like a james simmons. Both will be tested in the AFL and most importantly maybe get some notice from scouts if they do well.
I wouldnt be surprised if A’s used simmons/mortensen, reliever depth (casilla, even wuertz/bailey (depending on the return), buck, etc for ammo to get a hitter
As been discussed fielder, hardy, drew, etc. Hermida from FLA is another one

re: mariners
i was thinking this morning that damn, we are paying in karma currency for 2006. we went 18-1 or 19-0 vs them that year, right? and each of the last 3 years it feels like they have owned us. things would have looked different in the AL west that year if seattle showed up to any of the games against us…
