The A's sizzling hot September continues as they win big today, and split the four game series with the Rangers. The A's complete the homestand at 6-2, have won 9 out of 11, and 14 out of 18.
Brett Anderson collects his 11th win of the year to push his record over .500, and with his 1ER, he has now dropped his ERA to 4.12 and his WHIP to 1.28. He has been as good as the A's could have dreamed of in his last several starts, and looks like a successful major league pitcher right now.
One interesting note so far on the season. The A's and Texas have scored just about an identical number of runs. This was not the case at the All Star Break. Of course, Texas has about a hundred more homeruns and the A's are dead last in the AL in SLG percentage, but none of that seemed to matter in today's game.

The A's put another 12 runs on the board today thanks in part to Kennedy, Cust and Patterson, who all had multi-hit games. Just about everyone else drove in a run.
Brett Anderson broke the A's rookie strikeout record with 6 K's in his 5.2 innings of work, and despite the A's shoddy defense, they still managed to hold the Rangers to a paltry 3 runs. The Rangers faded fast, and this series just about wipes out any chance they had at a postseason berth.
Once again, the Rangers got on the board early, with one in the first (courtesy of 2 errors--Kennedy and Pennington) and one in the third.
Despite leaving the bases loaded in the second (after Travis Buck!!!! took an 0-2 count for a walk), the A's came right back in the bottom of the third and put 4 runs on the board. Kennedy singled and stole second, Sweeney walked, Cust walked, Barton walked, Patterson singled and Buck!!!! singled (and was helped by a poor throw by Andrus).
The A's turned a nifty 3-6-3 double-play to shut the Rangers down in the top of the fourth for the shutdown inning for Anderson, and Rajai "I'm not a fluke" Davis tripled to score another run in the fourth. Sweeney sac flied him in and Cust hit a homer to give the A's some breathing room.
Anderson and his 1 ER were cruising until the sixth, when a single, another error, and a single brought in another run for the Rangers. With two runners on and two outs, Brad Ziegler came in and walked the first batter to load the bases, bringing up the tying run; pinch hitter Nelson Cruz. In what could be classified as an 'unfair at-bat', Ziggy struck him out with ease.
The Rangers would not score again, thanks to another inning by Ziegler and two by Blevins (who is rebounding nicely). The A's; however, would. They put another 3-spot on the board with two walks, a Pennington triple and a Kennedy double, and two more in the eighth after a Sweeney single, Powell walk, Barton groundout and Patterson single. Basically, a group effort today.
Anderson's 11 wins brings him closer to Joe Blanton, who had 12 in his rookie season. Anderson has one more start to finish his season. He's been a great pitcher this year, especially the second half of the season.
The A's play the Angels down my way this weekend. Tomorrow night's game is at 7:05.

I knew you were going to say that.
I’m sike-ic. A professor of sike-ology. If you weren’t kidding, I would’ve said that you need sike-iatric help to fix your sike-osis.

Nice to see the A's closing out the season
by playing solid ball. Should they completely shred the LaHabra Angelino’s of Downey this weekend, thereby shaking their confidence as they head into the post season, I shall deem this season a resounding success.
But I’m hateful like that.
alox - September 24, 2009
If you were hateful you'd hope all those beanball wars he refused to get into
with the Angels come back with a vengeance.

Thoughts on Eric Patterson?
maybe figured things out?
asyouwish33 - September 24, 2009
Cause of 2 good games?
mikev - September 24, 2009
and his success in AAA
Plus, in his last 7 games he has 4 multi hit games. So, a little more than just two games.
asyouwish33 - September 24, 2009
Patterson vs. Haiston vs Buck or other
Who has the inside track for left field next year? Will it be decided in spring training?
Will Billy trade for a free agent? What say you? Personally, I think Hairston is the choice, but he must defend better than he did this year.
Graybeard - September 24, 2009
Matt Holliday is a free agent
4/40. get it done BILLY!
Future Ed - September 24, 2009
I wish
winchester5 - September 24, 2009
I am looking forward to year 2
of the economic downturn free agency. I wonder what he and bay and lackey are worth.
Future Ed - September 24, 2009
Seriously??
BERRYJO - September 24, 2009
at that price yeah
matt holliday is a good base-ball player. He was a good player for the A’s.
Future Ed - September 24, 2009
Of course. At 4/40?
Hes going to get 100 million this offseason.
winchester5 - September 24, 2009
4/40 would be such a ridiculous coup, I'd probably pee a little.
Just his 90 games in Oakland were worth approximately 13 million dollars this year.
mikev - September 24, 2009
That seems weird.
The whole time Holliday was an A, I was unhappy. The whole time he’s been gone (or nearly so), I’ve been happy.
How can that be worth $13M? I know that money not= happiness and all. But, uh, well, I’d rather pay him not to be an A.

this
my_cat_max - September 24, 2009
I guess the phrase "lying eyes" come to mind.
Holliday had like 3 shitty weeks when the season started, and then pretty much wrecked fucking shop the rest of the season.
People wanted a 50HR season out of him or something, or wanted him to lead the team to the AL West title. I dunno.
mikev - September 24, 2009
I just wanted him to

Leopold Bloom - September 24, 2009
This man is wise.
mikev - September 24, 2009
I thought by now you'd realize.
Leopold Bloom - September 24, 2009
I'd have to say Hairston
Patterson has NO power, and Hairston at least has some. Patterson gives IF flexibility, but I just can’t see us keeping someone so much like Rajai on the roster. Nothing against Raj, but his SLG pct leaves much to be desired.
Without some serious lobbying by OAH, Buck is about to be ridden out of town or confined to his pet carrier that is Sacramento. I think this week will be the last of Buck in an A’s uniform… assuming he gets another AB

The A's slugging percentage....
Hi, first time poster….long time lurker. Even though the A’s slugging percentage is low and not a whole lot of hitting home runs, they’re still scoring incredibly well by playing good fundamental ball (getting on base, stealing, driving in runs). Maybe they should keep this new “running” philosophy going because I’m loving what I see from this ball club.
pacinolee - September 25, 2009
Maybe they should keep this "getting on base at high rates" philosophy going...
