Out of Sacramento’s throat, the I-80 shuttle,
Out of the ninth-month call-ups,
Over the sterile basepaths, and the outfield beyond, where the man-child, leaving his bat, wander’d alone, bare-chested, long-haired,
Much have I watched the Green and Gold
And many goodly butts and faces seen
Round many A-ball stadiums I have been
Where hot young prospects strut so tall and bold
Oft of one right-fielder have I been told
Who lives inside the doghouse of one Beane
But never did I gauge his hair’s rich sheen
Til I saw Travis Buck — how I long to hold…
It’s not a “grounded,” so it’s not. More importantly, it’s not the batter’s “fault” because he hit the ball hard; it’s usually the runner’s fault for running when he shouldn’t have or being doubled off. At least that’s the idea.
Heard plenty about him, definitely, but that Nobel win pushed him into extremely exclusive territory. You’ve got to be one of the elite grad students to work with him.
He gave a speech a few days after he won, but I had a class during it, so I couldn’t go see.
Industry for a couple years isn’t a terrible way to go. On the other hand, it’s not like college—if you’re out of science for a little bit, admission committees usually need to know what you’ve been up to and why you needed the time off.
Thanks! I’ve had a couple professors mention that it’s not a bad route either. One of them actually took ten years off (not the original plan), which he definitely doesn’t recommend, however.
Ten years off is a lot. You need to be prepared for the haul though. I’ve known at least a couple of professors who almost walked away from science in grad school because they were so frustrated with their projects. If you ever need some thoughts on the process, hit me up (speckops@gmail.com). I’m a first year, so the process is pretty fresh on my mind.
Don’t know if you follow Beyond the Boxscore, but they have weekly power rankings of the teams based on wOBA and some other composite advanced stats for hitting, fielding, and pitching. The A’s have pretty consistently ranked around #10 for a while now, whereas the Giants were #23 last week. Lul records.
I have an old laptop that is sensitive to too much drain on the CPU. If there’s too much demand for too long it starts to overheat and will crash if I don’t shut down.
For most of the season, this was only a problem on really hot days, but since the upgrade, a game thread will shut me down in less than an hour. I finally gave in and got AdBlock for Safari; that helped a lot, but I still overheat after about two hours. Yesterday I tried turning off auto-refresh and I actually made it through the entire game, but I had it off again today and I didn’t make it. Looking at my CPU monitor utility, I’m not sure if auto-refresh actually makes a difference, but the site in general is definitely working the CPU harder than it used to.
So I just have to shut down my browser every half hour or so, which means losing the audio feed.
Hopefully I’ll have a new laptop by next spring. I don’t expect SB Nation to streamline its CPU use just for people like me.
I’m not sure I trust myself enough to do it, though. I’m not very good with machines. I’m afraid if I take things apart I won’t be able to put them back together.
Granted, a lot of laptops make it intentionally difficult to open the bottom panel.
I had a laptop that forced you to take it apart from top to bottom just to get inside. Needless to say, I never even got a quarter of the way in before giving up.
Those tourist-oriented Swiss created a holiday, basically so they can shoot off ordnance fireworks. Incredible amount of gunpowder smoke, little kids with M-80s, pretty incredible.
I like to look at pictures of fireworks, but I absolutely hate hearing them. One of my least favorite things in the world. I am miserable every July 4 and January 1.
is not for you…
The percussion from the Chinese fireworks, set off from the high ramparts of a medieval fortress in Martingny, was palpable on one’s chest.

cuppingmaster - September 22, 2009
huh
I’ve never thought about it at all.
sirbed - September 22, 2009
Except it wasn't a GIDP
It was a LODP
Nico - September 22, 2009
is LODP a real statistic?
Or is it simply lumped into GIDP?
cuppingmaster - September 22, 2009
It’s not a “grounded,” so it’s not. More importantly, it’s not the batter’s “fault” because he hit the ball hard; it’s usually the runner’s fault for running when he shouldn’t have or being doubled off. At least that’s the idea.
speckops - September 22, 2009
Bingo.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
Was his name-o.
By the way, you’re at UCSD, right? Ever run into Roger Tsien?
speckops - September 22, 2009
Hah, never have.
Heard plenty about him, definitely, but that Nobel win pushed him into extremely exclusive territory. You’ve got to be one of the elite grad students to work with him.
He gave a speech a few days after he won, but I had a class during it, so I couldn’t go see.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
Heh, that sucks. Does he teach any undergrad classes at all? Just talking to him would be pretty cool.
speckops - September 22, 2009
are you a chem/biochem grad student, danmerqury?
cuppingmaster - September 22, 2009
I think he’s a senior @ UCSD in chem.
speckops - September 22, 2009
Yes.
Chemical physics, not chem/biochem.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
Woah. Chemical physics, hard core. You have any plans for grad school?
speckops - September 22, 2009
Not sure at this point.
It’s something I’d like to do, eventually, but I’m not sure if I want to take some time off first.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
Industry for a couple years isn’t a terrible way to go. On the other hand, it’s not like college—if you’re out of science for a little bit, admission committees usually need to know what you’ve been up to and why you needed the time off.
speckops - September 22, 2009
Good to know, definitely.
Thanks! I’ve had a couple professors mention that it’s not a bad route either. One of them actually took ten years off (not the original plan), which he definitely doesn’t recommend, however.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
ten years is crazy
but at least he wasn’t poor during that time.
cuppingmaster - September 22, 2009
Ten years off is a lot. You need to be prepared for the haul though. I’ve known at least a couple of professors who almost walked away from science in grad school because they were so frustrated with their projects. If you ever need some thoughts on the process, hit me up (speckops@gmail.com). I’m a first year, so the process is pretty fresh on my mind.
speckops - September 22, 2009
Wow, thanks!
If I have any questions or anything, I’ll be sure to.

pancreatic, specifically
cuppingmaster - September 22, 2009
That’s definitely a nasty one. My favorite middle school teacher succumbed to that one. From the time of diagnosis to death was no more than 8 months.
speckops - September 22, 2009

the one silver lining of this swayze stuff is that it is likely to bring increased funding

speckops - September 22, 2009

doctorK - September 22, 2009
At Berkeley, you get the “NL” parking permit (= Nobel Laureate) which means you can park anywhere you god-damn please.

4th Place Team for AL & NL
If you look at the standings, the A’s would be in 4th place in each divisIon including the NL.
bashbro89 - September 22, 2009
Don’t know if you follow Beyond the Boxscore, but they have weekly power rankings of the teams based on wOBA and some other composite advanced stats for hitting, fielding, and pitching. The A’s have pretty consistently ranked around #10 for a while now, whereas the Giants were #23 last week. Lul records.
speckops - September 22, 2009
Just browsed Beyond the Boxscore.

Did we win yet?
I had to shut down the MLB Audio. Stupid SB Nation upgrade.
iglew - September 22, 2009
Not yet
Technically.
Flashfire - September 22, 2009
my MLB audio has been screwy as of late is that what the problem is?
sirbed - September 22, 2009
Not for me.
I don’t expect SB Nation to streamline its CPU use just for people like me.
iglew - September 22, 2009
The best thing to do would be to open the sucker up,
and try to blow some compressed air around. It’s mostly likely a dust buildup that’s your problem. You’d be surprised how much gets in there.
If you really wanted to, you could also remove the heatsink and re-apply some thermal grease, but that’s more difficult.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
Hmm, that makes sense.
I’m not sure I trust myself enough to do it, though. I’m not very good with machines. I’m afraid if I take things apart I won’t be able to put them back together.
iglew - September 22, 2009
Granted, a lot of laptops make it intentionally difficult to open the bottom panel.
I had a laptop that forced you to take it apart from top to bottom just to get inside. Needless to say, I never even got a quarter of the way in before giving up.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
Mine's an Apple PowerBook G4.
It’s from before they switched to the other chip. 2003, I think.
iglew - September 22, 2009
Ah. Then you might be out of luck.
I’m not very familiar with them, but I’d imagine it’s difficult/near impossible, consider it’s an Apple.
danmerqury - September 22, 2009
They still get dusty as hell inside
Get one of those little cans of compressed air, you can get them at office stores or best buy or whatever.
There will be an intake somewhere. Blow air through it. You’ll see the dust shoot out of it.
