Well, as they say, "everything ends badly, or else it would never end", que no?
This was one was pretty much over before it began as the Rangers jumped on A's starter Edgar Gonzalez for six runs on nine hits in just a smidge over three innings on the clock. I will spare you the gory details, and you can thank me in private. Instead there will be only highlights of Christina Hendricks. Here she is eating a Drumstick. And this is one of her doing a crossword puzzle. Sorry, the links don't seem to be working properly, but I am sure you can imagine.
Anywho, Henry Rodriguez made his A's debut tonight, and he made like Ebby Calvin 'Nuke' LaLoosh: in one very eventful frame, he allowed a hit, two runs (one earned), walked one, struck out one, and threw a pair of wild pitches. But he did go home with Annie Savoy.
In short, he wasn't anything like Brad Kilby, who continued to impress with an impeccable 2.2 innings in relief of Gonzalez, while striking out three Rangers.
Matt Carson gave the A's one tiny thrill in the ninth when he stroked his first Major League homerun in the home half of the ninth. By that time, the outcome had long been decided, leaving AN to discuss...other things.
Just a dozen games left. Enjoy them A's fans. There is no pain like the off-season.

Well,
I’d like to think I was on top.

Oops!
I meant, to cushion my fall.

Plastic jugs
I hear they help.

2 things you can’t have without the A’s
mikev - September 21, 2009
Well
…nothing like a good intra-division trouncing to remind us of where our needs really lie.
Rancho Canseco - September 21, 2009
I feel bad for edgar gonzalez
he was pissed when he got pulled from the last game. I wish geren would have left him in.

You even had a comment to add on top
but you still couldn’t bring yourself to put it in the subject line?

xbhaskarx - September 22, 2009
Does it really matter?
Flashfire - September 22, 2009
Is it me or are the additional game threads not showing up on the front page?
Flashfire - September 21, 2009
67M is crafty that way.
lynnzgal - September 21, 2009
bahleeted?!
mikev - September 21, 2009
They're still there, but probably hidden
I can get to them through checking my comments.
Flashfire - September 21, 2009
Yeah, I got that, too.
iglew - September 21, 2009
He had to hide them so that
no one would accidentally stumble upon all those naked pictures of Megan Fox and Christina Hendricks.
iglew - September 21, 2009
It's cool. I saved them.
mikev - September 21, 2009
for a loss, it was quite entertaining...
Rodriguez throws the shit out of the ball, and with no clue where it’ll end up, to boot.
Carson’s been fun to watch, too. I hope he has a great year next year in Tokyo or Pittsburgh or Sacramento.
Santangelo in the postgame show suggested that Kilby might be a candidate for the rotation next year. I don’t know about that, but I hope he keeps it up and makes the big club in some capacity. It’s awesome to watch his throwing hand flop around like he’s got a salmon tail coming out of his buttcrack or something…
I’m excited about not seeing Casilla, Crosby, and (nothing personal) Garciaparra clogging up the roster next year.
I hope Patterson gets deported to Siberia on general principles, even though the error should have been on Rodriguez.
I wonder if come April we’ll see Carter, Barton, and Cust all on the roster. I also wonder if that will be bodaciously cool, or suck monkey droppings.
Gaijin_Suketto - September 21, 2009
All of the above
with the addendum that if FP suggests something might happen, it’s probably not the case
bobnothing - September 21, 2009
Where would FP come up with that idea?
Kilby’s never started a single game in the minors. Just weird.
Flashfire - September 21, 2009
I'm sure he was dreaming of Kilby's 2 inning scoreless stint times three...
I don’t know if Kilby has enough quality stuff to get them out the second time through the lineup, but that deceptive motion sure works as a reliever.
Gaijin_Suketto - September 21, 2009
Not that it has anything to do with his comments about Kilby
but I met FP last year at the ACME Chophouse after a Giants game and he was a totally smug prick f*%ktard.
I offered to buy him a beer and he just stared at me and looked me up and….and then said, “Nah”…..while shaking his head and then turning his back to me. Asshole….
But Kilby is impressing me, though.
mrod - September 21, 2009
Yeah...
So the initials stand for _ucking _rick, right?
I’d rather shoot rats at the dump with Frank Menechino anyway.
Gaijin_Suketto - September 22, 2009
"Lighten up Frances!".......
Seriously, he was just full of himself and extremely rude…..whatever.
mrod - September 22, 2009
just got back from the game
well that was a dud, wasn’t it?
Even in games like that you find interesting things, such as:
Edgar González’ exchange with the umpire as he was getting taken out of the game. The ump was quite hot under the collar, and even after Edgar was gone the ump stomped around looking for someone to hurt.
Speaking of the ump, he touched the catchers’ backs before every pitch — sometimes one hand, sometimes two. I must say I’ve never noticed an ump doing that before. Maybe it’s common, but if I was a catcher it would really bug me.
Brad Kilby gives a small swipe of his hand and the ball behind his back before he throws a pitch.
Henry Rodgriguez’ debut wowed the fans with his 100 mph pitches — but not with his wildness.
Matt Carson hit his first major league Home run — he ran around the bases fast, grinning from ear to ear…nice!
Eric Munson and Travis Buck sighting — not that they did much at the plate.
Won’t be able to say this in a couple of weeks, but — tomorrow is another game. Hope the guys have more energy for tomorrow’s game than they did tonight.
OaklandSi - September 21, 2009
Waaah!
That is all.
lynnzgal - September 21, 2009
It's common for umps to have one hand on the catcher's back
I’ve seen it said that when the catcher shifts it tells the ump where the pitch is supposed to be – inside or outside.
Flashfire - September 21, 2009
funny, all the many games I've seen, and I never noticed that...
OaklandSi - September 21, 2009
You forgot the heat wave
It was cold too. My favorite line came from one of the vendors, during Patterson’s last at bat: “Eric Patterson swings a bat like JaMarcus Russell throws a football.”
Suck game…though the Buck, Carson, H-Rod and Kilby sightings were all fun. Daniel behind me said that Patterson reminded him of Willie Mays Hayes, and Dr. Pez was intently watching Henry Rodriguez, muttering “Nuke Laloosh, Nuke Laloosh.”
richwol1 - September 21, 2009
And he runs like JR should.
lynnzgal - September 21, 2009
guess the A's streak went wherever the heat wave went
OaklandSi - September 21, 2009
The vendor was pure comic genius...
…and he sounded like Scatman Crothers.
Dr Pez - September 22, 2009
Yeah, I was really mesmerised by Kilby's bizarre little wrist swipe before the pitch as well
Jackson23 - September 21, 2009
You sold Henry short in the intro.
He also hit a batter and missed a throw from Patterson at 1B.
WaddellCanseco - September 22, 2009
Well, I didn't want to be mean.
67MARQUEZ - September 22, 2009
Why in gods name was Crosby starting at 1B?
Is Barton injured? If he is or Geren just wanted to rest him then Powell should have played there. Giving at bats to a below replacement level player over young hitters like Barton and Powell who actually have a future here is so monumentally stupid I am actually choking on my own rage.
DeJay - September 22, 2009
Barton had a heel injury or soreness or something.
mikev - September 22, 2009
Ok - thanks
I’d still hope that with Munson on the roster that Geren could use Powell there
DeJay - September 22, 2009
Powell was catching. I'm not sure he's agile enough to catch AND play first.
mikev - September 22, 2009
Powell was a late-inning insertion
Geren could have used Powell at first, and replaced Suzuki with Munson late in the game.
richwol1 - September 22, 2009
I'm not sure he's agile enough to catch OR play first...
Can’t we just have nine DH’s, and a collection of stray dogs and Roombas to play the field?
Gaijin_Suketto - September 22, 2009
Great bunch of teens from Oakland High
seated in 124 or thereabouts. Thank you, Ken Korach, for your high school fundraising.
