Open Thread II: Game 143 - A's at Texas

Elvis_baseball_medium
Thanks to the Rangers' SS (pictured in an archive photo above) bobbling a relay on a Ryan Sweeney RBI double to extend the 6th, and an encore double from the very same Sweeney to clear the bases in the 7th (when the A's batted around), we are 7-0 A's as we stretch... doing our best to drive a stake deep in the heart of Texas' playoff chances =)

WELCOME FRIENDS

ROOM 2 ROAM IN THESE PARTS

Love the pics!!
I see crack!
don't worry

CalTrans was able to consult with the Richmond Baseheads Association and get the crack in the Bay Bridge smoked just fine.

Hello 'emp.
hiya Capitan

welcome to the new thread, Slow Night Edition.

Just dropped by to say

Holy Brett Tomko Batman!

Shutting down the Rangers, wow.

Rangers: Another leadoff single...

another scoreless inning?

Yup Yup

Lots of DPs = no scores for da Rangers

Rangers R teh sux!

LOLOLOLOL!

Sorry, just in denial of the fact that I am now over 30.

Happy Happy

BTW

You can be who you wanna be no matter how old ya are.....

I mean – I’m way over 30 but you might not know it!

My artificial hip and I totally agree
TomkoMania

is blowin’ up!

He got the way to move me

Tomko, that is

I just can't get enuf

of these Bill King highlight reels, I could listen to these all day.

I knew that I would be punished for turning to the NFL game
OK Ellis

No more pop-outs to 2nd!!

you mean

no more 2008 Ellis?

Who'd we get Tomko from? Padres?

and for cash, right?

man, what a steal

Cardinals??
Yankees?
well, he was on the Yankees at one point this season

I just don’t remember the order

released by the yankees, signed by the A’s.

Did he ever play for the Cardinals?

outside of my rA’sdar range.

I just went and look - here it is

CIN, SEA, SDP, STL, SFG, LAD, TOT, KCR, NYY

some of the above more than once…..so the answer to the original Q?? Yes he did play for ST. Louis.

no fair waiting till the 6th comment to ask the original question!

but seriously, he’s like johnny cash this guy.

E.Gon is pitching tomorrow. Meh.
2 knocks each for each and Dale

These are things I like. They give me hope for the future.

And by future, I mean 2010 season, cuz I don’t want them starting in 2011.

more runz! but Kennedy is not so smart.
What?

No double? I don’t understand.

wow it's 9-0

I would imagine we will get 2 hits tomorrow night and lose 1-0, but you gotta love this right now.

It's such a crapshoot everynight!

You never know what A’s you’ll see – although the second half A’s are a bit more decent.

I think

the team has played very well the 2nd half, with improvement shown in key areas.. this coupled with the continuing onslaught being provided by the future A’s like Wallace and Carter in the minors gives me at least a modicum of hope we won’t be 22 out next September and beyond.

We became a "team" after Holliday left town
I am hopeful for next year - although I understand the FULL strength "new" A's are expected in 2011
Sad but likely true

I feel for the Rangers and am suddenly happy that the door is not closing on us. They are done.

i was thinking that too. that this is the ranger’s time to face reality and it must hurt a bunch while the A’s and us have already gone through it.

I will be angry if that happens.

(I’m going to the game tomorrow. And I am expecting a victory. Or else.)

bad calls giveth

and bad calls taketh away

JaMarcus Russell is horrible but RRS disagrees

Threw a pick already.

Yeah, we judge quarterbacks on one pass.

Dude. Don't be mad.

He just really doesn’t appear to be a starting QB.

He has played for one year, but yeah, he’s already not an NFL quarterback.

Look at what he did down the stretch last season.

L @ MIA (11-5) — Week 11: 15-for-22 (68%), 156 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
W @ DEN (8-8) — Week 12: 10-for-11 (91%), 152 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
L @ SD (8-8) — Week 14: 9-for-13 (69%), 68 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT
L vs. NE (11-5) — Week 15: 17-for-32 (53%), 242 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
W vs. HOU (8-8) — Week 16: 18-for-25 (72%), 236 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT
W @ TB (9-7) — Week 17: 14-for-21 (67%), 148 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT

Those are winning teams that he faced down the stretch of last season in his first year as a starter.

Don't bother selling me. I'm not buying it.

I hope that I’m wrong because the Raiders being good makes football more interesting.

No one buys good numbers!

That's 7 TDs, 4 INTs, and a 67% completion rate.

That’s not terrible, but it’s hardly setting the world on fire.

Um, yeah, those are against teams that are .500 and better and that was his first year starting. You people just don’t get it, do you? He isn’t a ten-year veteran like Peyton Manning.

Hey, I'm not hatin.

I wish him well.

it isn't Russell, it isn't the coach,, it's one man and one man only

                                          hmmm, who could that be?

the Tomko gem continues

career win #100 could be career shutout #2.

That'd be cool
very impressive

He looks totally zoned in, working fast, hitting his spots. He’s going the distance.

plus his wife is expecting twins any day now!

delivering on Friday - according to the radio guys.
wowweewow, just tuned in. still had to focus and

let that score on the screen reach reality saturation.

TOMKOMANIA

It’s sweeping the nation.

Tomko is dealing

Texas Hold ’Em, of course

Holy doubles, Ryan!

Wow.

Tomko also has only 1 K

such a strange SO performance

Doubles are awesome.

are we going to have to rename Swingles?

Swoubles?

MORE DOUBLES LOL
Sweeney is like the opposite of what I'd want in the 3 spot of the lineup

But damn, he’s making good use of it

He might not be a bad choice for the 2-spot though

Especially if he keeps hitting doubles.

yeah, but he's gotta keep his OBP up if we bat him there

He doesn’t walk enough for my taste

Touchdown!

Oh, wrong thread

We have 3 field goals here....
nope

touchdown + safety

I love it when the defense scores.

Or that....

I thought of that after I’d already posted

Or TD with NO point after + FG

Geren is lovin' the uptick in our offense

He will be here for years to come…

I was looking at our W/L record and with Geren it's three straight loss seasons.....
I dislike Geren very much

but the roster hasn’t given him much of a chance to compete.

I know.....that gets factored into the stats for sure but only for ppl that are very familiar with the team.

well it’s all those tough breaks and a couple of bad bounces. those could have been anybody’s seasons but that year they weren’t his…

That's Geren speak - I think?!?!?

;-)

i tried. don’t have the cadance quite right yet. i mean, everybody here’s 3/4 awake still.

I want double digits

Come on Hairstyle, one more hit…

He is good at disappointing us
to the 9th!

sippin on a BT shutout.

but I did spiiiiill an earned ruuuun
Brett Tomko shut out the Rangers while camping underneath the stars?
Boy did it feel good.
It's a fresh game stat by the BBQ
can't believe Tomko's still pitching.

This is so bizarre.

he sure is durable tonight. like some kind of sandlot truck that can’t be destroyed…

there's a K

2 more outs

I love those curves....
That one not so much
Let's go Brett

Close it out!

Very nice

OUTFUCKINGSTANDING!

Roebuck?

Is that you Sarg?

WTH did i miss!!!

tomko a a complete game shutout!?!?!!?

And a parade of A's doubles.

It was beautiful.

The coming out party for Swoubles

(formerly Swingles)

DARN!

was watching the patriots game

Dang

Beat me to it.

Here’s hoping for a Swomers coming out.

YAY

4 hitter? Bravo.

TOMKOMANIA!

Yay win!

Awesome!

I am so impressed, Mr. Tomko. Nice work.

COMPLETE GAME VICTORY!

Bravo Tomko!
I'll be there tomorrow night, whos pitching for us
E. Gon
Oh god
Maybe he'll be inspired by Tomko's game
Andrus - he's got that Amish beard goin' on
Yeah. He looks amish.
to seal the deal, did he have an orange reflective triangle on his back?
No but- we could photoshop that into place!!
CelebraTe gOod tiMes, Kome On!
AN standing ovation for Brett Tomko

Well deserved!!
TOMKOKOMO

we get there fast then we take it slowwwww

Bush interviewing Brett Wallace
Wow, really? 9-0

Tomko magic pixie dust continues to work. I tell you, we need to sign Tomko again next year — not for his pitching, but for his effect on our offense.
