We head to the bottom of the fourth. Cahill is a K-machine, and has only given up two homeruns (both solo). Nomar, Cust, and the Rangers have given the A's the matching 2 runs, 2-2!
But there’s also a fight Sunday night. And as separate as the UFC and WEC try to be, they are truly one and the same. We’ve got four fighters on Saturday and two on Sunday.
A cutter, or a better changeup. Maybe a little tweak to his sinker.
Hell, he could be tipping his pitches against lefties for all we know. But the fact is that he’s been pretty effective against RHs, and that’s a lot more than most 21-year-olds can accomplish.
The point is that his sinker moves so much that he doesn’t seem to know what to expect from pitch to pitch. Refined command— or perhaps taking some dive out of the pitch— would likely reduce the number of pitches left directly over the middle of the plate at about waist-level.
And that command comes with experience. At least, one hopes. That’s why I don’t mind letting him work his problems out at the major league level against major league hitters.
He’s money on the mic, but they need to give him the strap for more than a cup of coffee at a time. I was wondering if they were going to do a E&C reunion / feud before he went down…
I think the only reason why they won’t give him the title for a long period of time is because he plays a special kind of a character where he keeps getting knocked back down to a degree, but then he always finds a way to rise to the top by beating the likes of Batista and the Undertaker.
Also, his reign with Chris Jericho was awesome. It’s too bad that it had to end the way it did. A faction could have been on the horizon, perhaps.
if they hadn’t fired Kennedy…Kennedy, they could have put Batista, Edge and KK in a stable and called them the DL’ers… >:)
Seroiusly, though, he does have that phoenix quality about him. Always comes back after taking a hit. He works very hard and works well with just about everyone. He and ’taker have had some phenomenal matches. And Jericho and Edge would have been fun to see together. They are both great workers.
…giving up dozens of homeruns at the major league level really the best way for Cahill to learn? I’m starting to think we’re better off sending him to AAA for a while, trying out something/anything else, and saving some service time while we’re at it.
Does he hit better when not fielding? WHY is he playing RF? Permanent DH, get rid of Giambi, Nomar, call up Buck to platoon with Hairston and Cunningham.
Did you know you can comment on Athletics Nation from your phone or PDA? SB Nation has launched mobile commenting. Check it out next time you’re at the game or bar and have something to say.
I’m watching the game and I can tell you it was outside. And then the pitch tracker can tell you it was outside. And then everyone at the game except the umpire can tell you it was outside.

Back to Cahill...
The dude is 21, and he’s got one, huge problem as a pitcher: lefties SLG over .900 against him.
Now, that’s a big, big problem, but it is one specific aspect of his game. If he can make significant progress on that, he’ll make big strides.
P.S. Can someone double back and make sure ZigFan doesn’t get left behind in the other thread?

I was just looking to see...
Derwood13 - August 6, 2009
Yes, happened this morning in Manhattan.
All those classic movies and he directed one of my faves that isn’t as well known – Career Opportunities.
Derwood13 - August 6, 2009
Oh yeah, with Jennifer Connelly
I liked 16 Candles best.
worldblee - August 6, 2009
I like Jennifer Connelly best
Toss up between Ferris Bueller and Weird Science for me.
Joey C. - August 6, 2009
And both of THOSE are phenomenal, too...
Matthew Broderick was untouchable in that movie. :)
Derwood13 - August 6, 2009
I think we just became internet BFFs
Joey C. - August 6, 2009
That's the one.
Frank Whaley is a good comic actor, too…
Derwood13 - August 6, 2009
Sad. Too young.
Turned into a recluse after all of his movies. I thought I saw some guys made a documentary about him. Wow.
