In what was a nice nod to the ultimate base-stealer during his "month", Rajai Davis made a bid to showcase his talent with two walks in the leadoff spot (to offset his 0-3), wreaking havoc on the basepaths. He stole an A's run by inducing a two-base error from a throw-over, and he put himself in scoring position again by stealing second and third later in the game. (Cust and Ellis also stole bases in the game.)
But the night really belonged to Gio Gonzalez. Emboldened by his recent successful outings at Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, Gio took that success home to shut out the Rangers tonight, pitching almost seven innings and striking out seven; allowing only three hits.
Mark Ellis went 3-4 tonight with 3 RBI's on what had to be the luckiest set of hits I've ever seen from a single player in a game.

Gio Gonzalez was absolutely fantastic, and at one point had retired 10 batters in a row. This was stretched to 11, thanks to a marvelous catch by Jack Cust. Yes, you read that right. Cust ran back on a smoked ball, and caught it up against the wall, in what was really a great play.
Gio had the no-hitter going until two outs in the fifth, and there were certainly times he appeared unhittable. This is a nice change from the Gio we've seen in the past, and hopefully a trend for the future. He also lowered his ERA by a full point tonight, after Ziegler came in with two outs in the seventh to finish his line.
In the eighth, the A's took no chances in the outfield with the 4-0 lead, replacing Hairston and Cust with Patterson and Sweeney. Ziegler started the inning with a double and a single that Ryan Sweeney picked up off the short hop, but probably should have caught outright. He was replaced by Wuertz, who did nothing much except strike out the next two batters to end the inning.
Everyday Breslow closed the ninth inning out to send the fans home happy.
As was mentioned today, by Susan Slusser (thanks micdog2001):
**UPDATE**GM Billy Beane just confirmed that it’s a roster issue that’s keeping Jason Giambi on the DL tonight. The team’s still weighing its options, but Giambi is essentially good to go. So speculation below, in the original post, still stands – this could be very interesting if the A’s don’t just simply send Tommy Everidge down.
Another possibility: The team might go with 11 pitchers briefly if Dallas Braden has to go on the DL and if Edgar Gonzalez makes the start. Usually, the A’s could have counted on someone else being hurt by now and making the move for them. Braden is hurt, which fits, especially considering how random the problem is – that’s very Oakland A’s – but that doesn’t clear a first-base spot.
As iglew pointed out in the game thread, Rotoworld thinks this is an easy call:
The A's are weighing their options as to who they'll send down. It seems pretty obvious to us: Tommy Everidge, the 26-year-old first baseman they called up in Giambi's absence, is just 7-for-28. But perhaps they've really lost that much faith in "The Giambino" as a starting option.
iglew: ZOMG, only 7-for-28? That’s a crappy batting average of .250! Does it not also seem obvious to you, Roto, that .250 is actually good on this team? Yeah, let’s get rid of Everidge (.250) to make room for Crosby (.219) Giambi (.193), or Barton (.147)!
You can add two more hits to that total tonight, which does make Tommy Time one of our better hitters, and in a somewhat unusual abberation for Rotoworld, they don't appear to take into account that almost half of Tommy's hits have been for extra bases, including his two doubles tonight. Maybe I'm out on a limb, but I love seeing Everidge in the lineup, and there are at least half a dozen players I'd jettison before him.
The A's try to win three straight from the Rangers tomorrow, but they will not have their ace on the mound to do it. Dallas Braden has been sidelined with a rash on his foot (incongruous to me with the pitcher who took a batted ball of his person and stayed in the game) and will miss tomorrow's start. Chad Reineke will be called up to take his place; stay tuned for roster news!

I can hear fairly well on 880 and hwy 24, but it starts to cut out past Walnut creek.
860 is undecipherable at my house. I even ran a wire on my roof (per the DIY instructions on someone on this site), and it still isnt working.
What makes this doubly ridiculous is that you can get the 810 KGO signal in 800 miles every direction (including Mexico). Am Signals are meant to span longer directions than FM signals.

the A’s have all of sudden taken this new approach with being patient with their recently called up players…everidge, pennington, gio, patterson ,etc…where was this when gallagher, buck and others were up? They got the inconsistent playing time, shuttle to AAA, etc. Mayb they wouldve atually produced if they were treated the same.

Nico - August 4, 2009
Also true...
…but they sure gave Nomar and Giambi a lot of rope, even seeing their performance. Buck didn’t give them really any reason to ship him out…yet…
baseballgirl - August 4, 2009
i think we just have reached the point where
a) these guys are the best it’s gonna get, for better or for worse.
b) with new talent pushing them from below, we need to figure out what to do with these guys.
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
Be thankful that they appear to have learned their lesson.
Although, really, if Gio goes down, who starts in his place? Eveland?
speckops - August 4, 2009
You make a good point
However, Buck and Gallagher obviously are clandestine black sheep to the organization. Both are doomed to get their shot in another uniform.
hishnik - August 4, 2009
Bullshit, Gallagher is going to be the #1 starter next year!!!!!!
mikev - August 4, 2009
This very well could be
But I have come to accept Gallagher leaving, he obviously rubbed a few people the wrong way this year. He went into training camp with an almost assured starting rotation start….and he just had the worse year. His last Tampa Bay outing, was one of the harder games to watch. He was horrible!!

In his like 10 starts with the organization
Helloooo 1st - August 5, 2009
Maybe they didn't like Gallagher and Buck?
OldhamA - August 5, 2009
Everidge
It looks like pitchers are being very carefull when they pitch to him. I guess his size makes them fear of a power hitter.
Arcman - August 4, 2009
Fear of a Black Hat.
LoneStranger - August 4, 2009
He seems to have good strike zone discipline.
He’s looked much more comfortable at the plate than folks like Cunningham and Patterson have in their first couple weeks. A lot of Everidge detractors seem to feel his milb numbers are a fluke, but what gets me – small sample size be damned – is how his numbers have been continually trending upward since the start of the season. This, despite a promotion and having to face a ton of pitchers he’s never seen before.
He wouldn’t be the first guy to figure things out at 26. Part of his success this year seems to be that he’s stopped striking out so much and has become a better contact hitter. If he can keep this up in the big leagues I don’t see why he shouldn’t have a crack at 2010 starting 1B. All he really has to do is hit better than Giambi/Barton, and if he can hit better than Cust, that should be enough going forward to earn him a spot on a team with a tendency to carry too many DHs, even when more highly touted names like Wallace and Carter arrive.
I’m not saying he’s gonna be a long term key to success, but I think he gets written off far too quickly on a team that’s relying on an aging Jack Cust for its sole source of power, and lets not forget the circumstances under which Cust came to the A’s. A lot of highly touted prospects have put up numbers far far worse than what Everidge has accomplished this year, albeit at a younger age.
Aufheben - August 4, 2009
Everidge being a better contact hitter.
The A’s defenatly changed something organizationally this year that has worked. It seems like they are forcing their prospects to hit for average and contact and the expense of power and patience and it is paying off with the likes of Everidge, Carter, and Brown.
Threepwood XX - August 4, 2009
Worked for Cust
Oh, wait.
mikev - August 4, 2009
He didn't really come up in our system, did he?
speckops - August 4, 2009
Cust seemed to imbrace it at the beginning of the year.
And then a month or so into the season he just gave up on it, maybe because of a precieved lack of power?
Fosse and Kieper tried to blame his average drop on Cust’s back issues, but it always seemed to me he just a gave up early on the new system to hit home runs, instead of sticking with it like Carter did until the power started to show up again later in the season as he got used to it.
I’ll never understand why baseball players are allowed to get away with being so uncoachable. If a hockey player refused to embrace a new system like that he’d be dropped to the 4th line…
Threepwood XX - August 4, 2009
I'll never understand why baseball players with a .900 OPS are asked to change their approach.

Threepwood XX - August 4, 2009

lenscrafters - August 4, 2009
I don't think Cust is anywhere near a .900 OPS hitter going forward,
regardless of his approach.
Aufheben - August 4, 2009
2007 wasn't that long ago.
Granted, he did have that freak of a week when he mashed like 8 HR in 7 games, and pitchers probably adjusted to him. But those count.

Not playing half his games in Oakland, no.
But 2007 and 2008 weren’t flukes.

I'm rooting for him
But his swing is really longgg. This is what Sickels had to say:
But like I said, I hope he stays up here. I’d much rather watch him than Giambi or Nomar.NateHST - August 4, 2009
Fortunately there's a lot of medicore fastballs and hanging sliders in the majors.
OldhamA - August 5, 2009
From what I've seen so far, I think Sickels is exactly right
I think Everidge could be a good mistake hitter, and/or a good platoon hitter, in the big leagues — neither of which is the worst thing to be or have. But I don’t quite see him confounding the pundits and becoming an everyday player who can hit good pitches.
Nico - August 5, 2009
Best case scenario for him would be a Kevin Millar type of player (hopefully without the douchiness)
Millar was a 1B/3B (though bad at 3B) who also took a long time to get to the majors, putting up good numbers in the minors — he didn’t even reach the majors until he was 26, and that was only 3 PAs. He came up for good at 27, and became a really good hitter for 4 or 5 years.
Nick - August 5, 2009
That sounds about right, actually.
Now will I offend people if I suggest that instead of “Cowboy Up,” Everidge’s signature motto should be “Cow Up”?
Nico - August 5, 2009
It's still a big long-shot though
He’s much more likely to end up as a Doug Jennings or Troy Neel (on the field, not off!) than a Millar.
Nick - August 5, 2009
Yeah, he'll probably wind up hitting left-handed
But maybe he’ll get a game-winning hit against DeWayne Buice in the only game I see in person at Angels Stadium.
Nico - August 5, 2009
I could never stand DeWayne -- he was definitely a Buicer
Nick - August 5, 2009
Is this Sickels guy God...
if he’s so great every organization would be willing to pay him millions to be in their organization. Maybe the guy is halfway full of shit.
Keystone State - August 5, 2009
He's considered one of the better prospect analysts out there
That doesn’t mean teams are going to be chasing after him for his services, and for all we know some have and he’s declined.
Flashfire - August 5, 2009
Has anyone gone back three years...
…and seen how well Sickels’ ratings have panned out? Seems to me Sickels’ ratings are snapshots of a moment in time, rather than necessarily predictive. Obviously, it’s easy to rate Evan Longoria as a great prospect with a great future, but Andrew Bailey got no love, and Homer Bailey got lots.
richwol1 - August 5, 2009
All that proves is that Sickels isn't as good with Baileys as I am.
{hic}
Nico - August 5, 2009
Andrew Bailey didn't get love from anybody before this season.

We’ve been giving him love since 2006.
mikev - August 5, 2009
Thing is....
I’d like to see him get the chance. He may very well shorten up his swing against superior pitching. The guy just might be able to flat out hit. I think he’s earned the chance to show if he can compete at the highest level. Some guys blossom later than others, and I think Everidge may be one of those guys.
alox - August 5, 2009
I heard in the interview that he's made some adjustments to his swing
in the last 2 years and it really didn’t make a difference until the beginning of this year. I agree his swing is a little long, but he’s been going with pitches a lot more and that has helped. Sounds to me that with the right coaching he’ll be able to shorten his swing and be able to hit the elite pitchers.
VV A's fan - August 5, 2009
Ah, I think Dr. Pez got it
After the game, he said the following: Its pretty obvious why the roster move for Giambi wasn’t made. They’ll bring up Reinke, send down Patterson, then send down Reinke and reinstate Giambi.
With Giambi as DH, Cust plays the field, Sweeney sits and comes in for the late innings. In a pinch both Crosby and Kennedy can play the outfield.
richwol1 - August 4, 2009
you may be onto something
so you think e pat is out until sept 1?
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
I REEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLY hope that's not the case.
I’d much rather see Sweeney own RF and be given a chance to develop than sit on the bench and watch Cust drop fly balls and Giambi march steadily towards retirement.
OldhamA - August 5, 2009
This.
Giambi shouldn’t get another AB in an A’s uniform
Blicks - August 5, 2009
Maybe _one_ more. Just for his bobblehead day.
Then yank him.
LoneStranger - August 5, 2009
I wouldn't mind dropping Nomar
and keeping Giambi as a pinch hitter/spot starter. Neither is going to give that much in the role but at least I have an emotional attachment to Jason.
micdog2001 - August 5, 2009
That would be the idea
Patterson has really shown nothing while he’s been here, and unless Beane wants to either trade Nomar or DFA Giambi, that makes more sense that sending down Everidge, particularly since Dame Edna is hitting the ball to all fields.
richwol1 - August 4, 2009
I have no desire to see Giambi ever take...
…take another swing in an Oakland uniform. I was just trying to figure out what they are doing with the roster.
As for Patterson: He flat out is not a major league player, he’s a bad defender with a weak arm, has a long loopy swing and just looks flat out overmatched to me.
And Everidge deserves a shot, at worst, he’s brought a little life to this team over the last ten days, at best he’ll keep this up and win a job.
Dr Pez - August 5, 2009
I agree
Patterson is a minor league player period.
Giambi’s days are numbered. Gotta play the young guys
Trainman - August 5, 2009

Is it just me
or have the little Rotoworld blurbs been far more frequently wrong this year?
I remember early in the season that Rotoworld couldn’t believe that Gallagher wasn’t going to be in our rotation, never mind his inability at the time to, y’know, pitch.
Nate - August 4, 2009
Rotoworld has had sub-par A's analysis for as long as I remember.
I just don’t think they pay that much attention to the A’s. It’s like hearing analysis from someone who just read the box score in the paper the day after the game.
Threepwood XX - August 4, 2009
I remember when Rotoworld was good.
It was shortly before it began appearing in the AN sidebar, when you had to actually go to the Rotoworld page to read it. Back then whoever was writing the A’s bits clearly knew the A’s.
It was also far less frequent then. Now it’s like they feel like they have to comment on everybody who does anything every day. I think they’ve expanded, delegated, and spread too thin, and now some nobody intern is writing the blurbs we see.
iglew - August 5, 2009
Today on Rotowold, we learn that "Braden won't pitch on Friday."
I think we all knew that anyway, being as today is Wednesday and all.
Nico - August 5, 2009
That's probably about the extent of what it is
Flashfire - August 5, 2009
Leave Everidge out there...
….250 may be small sample size but it could just as easily be an example where small sample size plus a couple of hits turns in to a good batting average (good for the league not the A’s, .250 is clearly good for the A’s)….while Giambi has a significant sample size indicating .193 is for real.
Besides, every time I look Giambi has “sore legs” or some other nonsense, I’m surprised it took them this long to put him on the DL and am surprised they want to bring him back.

Great all around game tonight.
What a great pitching performance, Gio was phenomenal and Weurtz was just filthy. As for the offense it is nice to see Zooks get into one. How lucky can a Unicorn get, all three of his hits could have gone for outs on another night. Tommy is looking more and more like the real deal. I love the running game we have this year and Salty might be hot, (according to ZF & OAH) but he could not throw out an A’s runner if his life depended on it. All and all a complete win for the A’s over the stRangers. This is my 5th game in a row that I have gone to. I am happy to say we now have a winning record in those games, (3-2). I am planning to go to the remaining two Tex games and all three KC games for a grand total of ten strait games. Here is to us keeping the momentum and good luck Chad on your first start in Green & Gold.
adragon - August 5, 2009
The desire to avoid embarrassing Giambi
is driving the A’s decision-making at the moment.
The reality that everyone knows is that Giambi has no future with the team, and really shouldn’t play at all. But he does have a past with the team, and that does count for something. Almost as important, it’s important that the A’s not humiliate Giambi or Nomar if they are to have a chance at signing future veterans on the downside of their careers.
Oakland isn’t an attractive destination right now – bad team, light attendance, etc… – and the A’s need to treat these old guys with respect. But, of course, they can’t treat them with too much respect. Everidge needs to start right now. There’s no reason to send him down. He might not turn out to be anything special, but we might as well let him have a shot. As iglew noted, it’s not as if the other alternatives (Giambi, Barton, etc…) have done anything to deserve the at-bats. Everidge may not be highly touted, but he is hitting.
Luckily, this whole problem basically solves itself by September when the rosters expand.

Yeah
My hope is that the A’s can send Nomar to the Red Sox on September 1st so he can finish his career with the team he started with. As for Giambi
-like I wrote above, Eric Patterson is superfluous and can come back in September. Meanwhile, Giambi gets to share DH with Nomar and Cust.Landon Powell should be getting a lot more DH appearances though.
My hope in September is that Cunningham, Buck and Barton all get a shot at playing, though I suspect Giambi will get his farewell tour at some point.
richwol1 - August 5, 2009
Why can't we run Nomar back out there at third?
At this point, what do we care if goes on the DL again? For once, it might actually work for us.
alox - August 5, 2009
Not a bad idea at all.
I think they should add Giambi and just go with 11 pitchers.
Yellowhorse - August 5, 2009
I don’t think Garciaparra is healthy enough to play third base anymore.
Rated-R Superstar - August 5, 2009
That's the point he's saying
Play him, let him hurt himself again, have a reason to use the DL spot.
Flashfire - August 5, 2009
It might be safe to say that Gio has turned the corner, finally!
3+++ performances in a row and he seems like he has his head together. Thank goodness and keep Tommy Two Tone & King Raj in the lineup till there is a good reason to take them out.
Go A’s!
mrod - August 5, 2009
that would be nice
he was starting to make me nervous that beane would get frustrated and trade him so we could watch him dominate in 1-2 years in some boring ass red or blue uniform
jlanning17 - August 5, 2009
What I don't get is
even if he doesn’t turn out to be a god, he surely would be a back of the rotation guy, with the capability of putting up a dominating start every once and a while. That’s not bad.
sourstuff - August 5, 2009
Everidge earns the right to be called "Tommy Two Tone"
when his fielding percentage is .867 and he has 5 HRs, 30 RBI, and 9…Stolen bases? Sacrifice bunts? Sac flies? Errors? Hmm…
Nico - August 5, 2009
Gio is 2 innings away from being Cole Hamels.
PL78 - August 5, 2009
Can Gonzalez win World Series MVP with us just like how Hamels did with the Phillies?
Rated-R Superstar - August 5, 2009 via mobile
I wouldn't say this
unless Gio’s curveball becomes even close to as unhittable as Cole’s Change.
sourstuff - August 5, 2009
The Giants whacked Hamels around his last start. He’s been pretty hittable this year; but that might just be a small sample size—his K/BB is at a career best 4.65, so that mid 4 ERA will probably come down a bit.
speckops - August 5, 2009
The difference between Gio and Hamels is command
Gio’s curveball might be as unhittable as Hamels’ changeup right now.
Nico - August 5, 2009
No argument here: I think we'd all be thrilled if Gio's BB/9IP was 1.7.
speckops - August 5, 2009
another thought
I think the changeup in general is the difference.
sourstuff - August 5, 2009
Very nice to see Gio put together three good starts in a row in the bigs
There are signs there that he can do it at this level consistently if he gets a real chance to.
Flashfire - August 5, 2009
And he did it without his dancing buddy!
Nick - August 5, 2009
Remember how the Big 3 used to talk about how they would
have friendly competitions to top a great start with a better one of their own? I think that’s happening, to some degree, with the young guys:
Mazzaro: You think that was a lousy start, Trevor? Watch this!
Gio: Eh, 8 losses in a row is for amateurs. Call me when you’ve given up 11 ER in one start.
Nico - August 5, 2009
Eveland sobs softly in the background.
speckops - August 5, 2009
Eveland showed what happens when you win that competition
Flashfire - August 5, 2009
THE BIGGEST LOSER!!!
And I mean that in so many ways.
Nico - August 5, 2009
Waive Crosby
Seriously, though. The money is sunk cost. The versatility is superfluous— you’ve got Petit stashed in the minors who can give you better D at each position. The bat is atrocious.
Waive him. Just waive him. And let Tommy Tuton(e) keep mashing doubles.
Joey C. - August 5, 2009
+1
His latest sob story to Urban is justification enough (not counting his performance on the field)
hishnik - August 5, 2009
Anyone catch Mark Ellis's interview after the game?
Pretty comical.
