I went to the Rickey game on Saturday and took my sweet-ass time heading back down the coast (I had a “fever”).. alas, back home for a 3 day work week.
If you leave the Scoreboard page open, it periodically automatically opens up a window with a “look in” at a random game, which interrupts the audio of the game I’m actually watching.
It was just a couple of sections away from me. It was a large older guy who was sitting in my section briefly and yelling very inappropriate things. When they tried to remove him, he resisted, and when they couldn’t get cuffs on him, they tased him, not once but twice. I saw the cop’s hand reach forward and saw the blue electric light of the taser. Very unnerving. Apparently he hit his head on the rail when they knocked him down with the taser, and he needed medical attention. It was very distracting, especially since a foul ball went directly toward him right after he got tased. There was also some “outside alcohol” involved, according to the usher on my aisle who had interacted with him earlier. Sad.
These starters have got to start going deeper into games. Gio hasn’t given up a run and he’s out in the 7th. Something they all need to work on. (Except probably Anderson.)
we could try to get these guys to pitch later into games. I’m no pitching coach, just an idea, but I think in general, the further the starters get into the games the better for the team as a whole.
I love how competitve he is. He did not want to come out of the game. Awesome! And the starters are doing fine. I don’t think almost 7 innings is too shabby.
Did you know you can comment on Athletics Nation from your phone or PDA? SB Nation has launched mobile commenting. Check it out next time you’re at the game or bar and have something to say.
Someone asked "why the man crush for Everidge" ...
because the guy swings the friggin’ bat … Gawd, it’s nice to see an A’s player get aggressive at the plate …. it’s easy to forget what it looks like with this team.
First you hit a grounder that caroms off of first base. Then you chop one near the bag at second and watch while the fielder takes too much time missing second base to get you at first with his throw. Then you chop one between first and second, and hope the second baseman forget to throw the ball like a guy.
“take what they give me. If they pitch me away, I’ll hit to right, if they go inside I’ll pull it.”
THAT SHOULD BE EVERY HITTER’S APPROACH. It’s a great, tried and true way to be hard to pitch to. Helloooooooo, guys who aren’t hitting .290.
I have a feeling Everidge will be pretty vulnerable to breaking balls from RHP, but he’ll still mash mistakes. Seems like the kind of hitter who would be 1/5 with a HR against Wuertz.
because most pitchers like to stay on the outside corner a lot and his approach doesn’t make that possible. So pitchers have to come inside, where there is less margin for error.
If he refuses the assignment, let him go. With Everidge, Patterson, Nomar and Kennedy, there is no need for Crosby. The salary is sunk. Clearly, Giambi and Nomar will be kept to the end of the season out of respect, so the only move that makes sense is to cut ties with Crosby.
Unless Giambi volunteers a midseason retirement, that appears to be the only reasonable option. We already have AK for the versatility, and Crosby’s role is no longer clear
“And Wallace, a third baseman acquired in the Holliday deal with the Cardinals, has only veteran Adam Kennedy — who will be a free agent this winter — blocking his path to the bigs; Wallace will be in Oakland this year.”
Or hell, send them both down. Nico might be right and they might be untouchable, but that’s who I’d send down. They’re two designated hitters who can’t hit anymore, they’re not going to be with the team in the future, why in the world are we wasting plate appearances on them?
The A's dugout/bullpen atmosphere has looked entirely different to me since...
the team started running, bunting, scraping. Speed brings energy, it brings teams to the top step of the dugout, and it doesn’t go into slumps. If there’s an undervalued part of baseball, it’s the part many think is overvalued: Speed.

How to get 3 hits, and 3 RBI, by Mark Ellis:
First you hit a grounder that caroms off of first base. Then you chop one near the bag at second and watch while the fielder takes too much time missing second base to get you at first with his throw. Then you chop one between first and second, and hope the second baseman forget to throw the ball like a guy.

Nico - August 4, 2009
Seriously. His ability to stay with the pitch is impressive.
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
It makes him so much harder to pitch to,
because most pitchers like to stay on the outside corner a lot and his approach doesn’t make that possible. So pitchers have to come inside, where there is less margin for error.
Nico - August 4, 2009
Maybe you already said somewhere...
but what’s your roster move to activate G?
vegAN ryAN - August 4, 2009
DFA Giambi :P
Nate - August 4, 2009
Garciaparra.
Rated-R Superstar - August 4, 2009
Him too
Nate - August 4, 2009
wouldn't those 2 rather retire
then get sent down?
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
Not Jason.
It’d cost him his $1.25M buyout.
Nate - August 4, 2009
wow never thought i'd see that happen
guess anyone could be sent down, they’re always a rivercat!
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
yeah then you can have them sign your rivercats thong
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
not those 2
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
reserved for a special guy ;-)
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
would it be wrong to also ask a player from another team?
saltalamacchia
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
get a rangers thong
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
Ugly.
Rated-R Superstar - August 4, 2009
no that's going to far, i'll admire him from afar
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
"too far"
said the girl who wears a thong of an AAA team
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
To be fair, they’re 67-43 the last time I checked.
Rated-R Superstar - August 4, 2009
they're good
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
haha
can’t jinx anything important
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
I care about the Pacific Coast League!
Rated-R Superstar - August 4, 2009
i'm not a jinx
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
not like that
i mean jinxing your…. nevermind
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
oh i get it
ooops
OakA'sHoney - August 4, 2009
no official word on who takes the walk
One won lost won - August 4, 2009
All the more reason to speculate about it now!
I release Crosby.
vegAN ryAN - August 4, 2009
This is not me being snarky: Send Crosby to AAA.
Nico - August 4, 2009
+10000
Unless Giambi volunteers a midseason retirement, that appears to be the only reasonable option. We already have AK for the versatility, and Crosby’s role is no longer clear
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
Utility infielder?
It’s not like that’s a role Nomar or Giambi can fill.
Nate - August 4, 2009
But AK can
And if anything happens to him, it’s been made clear Wallace is going to get the call when Sept 1 rolls around.
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
really?
where was that reported?
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
Urban:
“And Wallace, a third baseman acquired in the Holliday deal with the Cardinals, has only veteran Adam Kennedy — who will be a free agent this winter — blocking his path to the bigs; Wallace will be in Oakland this year.”
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
Thanks
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
AK can't play shortstop
and neither can Wallace.
Nate - August 4, 2009
in a pinch, he could
Wallace obviously not. I just can’t see Everidge being sent down with the bat control he’s shown
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
I'm not arguing Everidge should be sent down
I’m questioning whether Crosby should.
Nate - August 4, 2009
I guess the question is, if one assumes
that rightfully or wrongfully, Giambi and Nomar are untouchable, who else?
Nico - August 4, 2009
who would you send down?
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
Nomar or Giambi
Or hell, send them both down. Nico might be right and they might be untouchable, but that’s who I’d send down. They’re two designated hitters who can’t hit anymore, they’re not going to be with the team in the future, why in the world are we wasting plate appearances on them?
Nate - August 4, 2009
I already called it.
I get the points if it happens
A's10thMan - August 4, 2009 via mobile
Hmmm...maybe the A's brass
doesn’t want all the negative words Crosby’s gonna give the press if he gets dumped. Just a thought.
Philip Christy - August 4, 2009
Those comments are either coming now or at the end of the season.
Might as well get it out of the way while everyone’s paying attention to actual baseball.
vegAN ryAN - August 4, 2009
he's already vocally unhappy with his new role
not sure what there is to lose for us now
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
True but
the nicer they treat him now the less smack he talks later.
But I have no idea if this is a consideration at all or not.
BTW when I saw your screen name I knew it was you, before I had seen your sig.
Philip Christy - August 4, 2009
When I saw your screen name
I had no idea who you were. ;-)
vegAN ryAN - August 4, 2009
LOL
Philip Christy - August 4, 2009
Who do you call up
to be utility infielder in Crosby’s place?
And who gets sent down for him?
Nate - August 4, 2009
I don't know that you need one
Pennington can play every inning and if he gets hurt you manage a few innings with someone like Kennedy until you can call up Petit.
Nico - August 4, 2009
I'm loving
The hugs
A's10thMan - August 4, 2009 via mobile
The A's dugout/bullpen atmosphere has looked entirely different to me since...
the team started running, bunting, scraping. Speed brings energy, it brings teams to the top step of the dugout, and it doesn’t go into slumps. If there’s an undervalued part of baseball, it’s the part many think is overvalued: Speed.
Nico - August 4, 2009
Of course it's precisely when everyone thinks it's overvalued....
….that it’s undervalued.
That’s Moneyball®!
GreenNGoldSooner - August 4, 2009
Dude.
Even Best Man Bob looks more animated tonight. And that’s no small feat.
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
Ellis with three hits and three RBIs
see, if Ellis wasn’t injured early the A’s would be neck and neck with the Slegna!
One won lost won - August 4, 2009
Chad Reineke to start tomorrow.
oblique - August 4, 2009
Pepe must be pissed.
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
How...what...why
Does Dallas have a rash on his foot
Maybe he’s superstitious about his socks, and doesn’t change them after he gets a win
SwisherThresher - August 4, 2009
he wears a neoprene guard on his toe that drags
apparently it got infected and spread
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
I didn't know that neoprene could get infected!
;-)
GreenNGoldSooner - August 4, 2009
yeah
:p
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
I suspect it's a cover up for the truth: Pepe got drunk and has a bad liver-finger.
Nico - August 4, 2009
Debbie Did Dallas' Foot?
vegAN ryAN - August 4, 2009
hey, watch it!!!!
Deborah51 - August 4, 2009
On VHS?
SwisherThresher - August 4, 2009
Okay. Back to watching Mad Men on demand.
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
I am watching wrestling.
Rated-R Superstar - August 4, 2009

the only thing that blows about TiVo is not having VoD anymore :-(
Drool at Betty Draper and Joan for me.
cuppingmaster - August 4, 2009
More like Don Draper, but I can appreciate your eye candy too.
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
Aw. Gio is ADORABLE.
pam5981 - August 4, 2009
I love how he looks everywhere but at the interviewer
He also looks to be rockin’ a pretty cool Popeye shirt
SwisherThresher - August 4, 2009
And super humble.
