You know, I really, really have a hard time understanding Billy sometimes. Here we have ourselves a guy who not only puts up terrible looking stat lines every time he reaches the majors, but looks completely lost doing it, and yet Aaron Cunningham and Travis Buck are apparently the ones who don’t deserve a shot to prove they belong.
The last time I left work still following the A’s game, we were losing 13-7 against the Twins. When I got home, it was 14-13. So, you know, just maybe by the time I get home…

The chestnut tree is “châtaignier”. The nut is “châtaigne”. The color is “châtain”. Those three are obviously related, and they derive from Latin.
“Marron” is a different word also referring to the nut. It derives from a non-Latin root (my dictionary only says “d’un rad. préroman”).
It looks like the Latin words have a more technical connotation and “marron” is more colloquially, but I’m not sure. (I’m reading in French, and my comprehension isn’t that good.)
Both words have cognates in Italian, I know. I think in Spanish too, but not sure.
I guess I just like surprises and being right. To each his own. I hate being let down so I would rather be prepared to lose. Now if I was a player in the game it would be different, then you shouldn’t give up.
I don’t like offical predictions on game threads because if I’m wrong then I look stupid. I would only say it to friends or family who are watching the game with me and never to an opposing fan either.
Sigh - let's go a's

Oh yeah, about that. Um...
Sorry.
Nico - August 3, 2009
It's true, I would have.
In my defense, I think he would have cleared waivers.
iglew - August 3, 2009
Let's not point to Rajai that it's also
that Geren had a justified complete lack of faith in Eric Patterson.
Nico - August 3, 2009
agree, SSS
but maybe he’s just one of those slow starters who needs to be in there every day to get his groove. i think, with holliday gone, he is our #1 OF right now…
jlanning17 - August 3, 2009
That may be the nicest way I've ever heard someone point out that
Hairston and Sweeney really suck.
Nico - August 3, 2009
i have tried to wait for sweeney
but his development needs to start coming on the bench or in AAA.
jlanning17 - August 3, 2009
small sample size on Hairston
but Sweeney is wearing on me. especially after striking out looking the other night. that was disgusting.

Y’know, I was just watching on glorious HD.
Good job on the fireworks x3 though. I’ve taught you all well.
ElQuesoCapitan - August 3, 2009
No, it's not good.
Should be just one.
iglew - August 3, 2009
Picky.
It was a game winning triple. One firework for every base stepped on by Rajai!
ElQuesoCapitan - August 3, 2009
OK, I'll buy that.
iglew - August 3, 2009
Probably ruled a game-winning double
Rajai didn’t get to third by the time Ellis was home.
Nico - August 3, 2009
Well my TV says it's a triple and Gameday says it's a triple.
So unless someone corrects that, it’s a triple. >:(
ElQuesoCapitan - August 3, 2009
TV side said the scorer ruled it a 3B
Andris actually obstructed Davis after he rounded 2B, FWIW.
And Rajai kept running, in case you’re wondering.
Nick - August 3, 2009
Gameday says it’s a triple.
walkoff baltimore chop - August 3, 2009

iglew - August 3, 2009
See, Cap'n.
When you go away and don’t designate someone to cover on the fireworks, we get confused and post multiple ones. That’s bad mojo.
iglew - August 3, 2009
Well then I'll let you guys handle the fireworks for the next week.
Whoever posts the best ones gets the job, or some jazz like that.

pam5981 - August 3, 2009
so did anybody else see the walk-off naked?
got out of the shower, refreshed the phone and saw that cust was on base, decided bed had to wait and sprinted to get my laptop. great game to be the first naked baseball watching on the new couch…

ElQuesoCapitan - August 3, 2009
Sigh. We probably never were.
pam5981 - August 3, 2009
Mac Book is a euphemism now?
ElQuesoCapitan - August 3, 2009
I thought you meant Davis lost his clothing after the double, kind of a Brandi Chastain thing.
So when you sprinted to get the laptop…aw, forget it.
JJ Martin - August 3, 2009
Chastain means "chestnut" in French
but the word is most commonly used as a color, ie brown.
I note this only because I know Pam loves stuff like this.
The spelling with the “s” is variant; standard spelling would be châtain. (A circumflex in French frequently indicates a dropped “s”.)
iglew - August 3, 2009
i thought chestnut was marron en francais
OakA'sHoney - August 3, 2009
I'm pretty sure they both are.
Hmm, I’ll need to investigate that.

OakA'sHoney - August 3, 2009
Chataignier is the French word for chestnut tree
Nick - August 3, 2009
OK, here it is.

I didn't want to get my hopes up
it always is better when you don’t think it will happen OR if you make an offical prediction.
A’s WIN, some of my favorite words.
micdog2001 - August 3, 2009
Disagree on both counts.
It’s best when you do think it will happen. And “official predictions” are always lame.
iglew - August 3, 2009
I guess I just like surprises and being right. To each his own. I hate being let down so I would rather be prepared to lose. Now if I was a player in the game it would be different, then you shouldn’t give up.
micdog2001 - August 4, 2009
also
I don’t like offical predictions on game threads because if I’m wrong then I look stupid. I would only say it to friends or family who are watching the game with me and never to an opposing fan either.
