A third consecutive losing season is almost a certainty for our dear Oakland A's, and that hasn't happened since 1996-98, which came at the tail end of a six-year stretch in the red.
That's the last negative thing you'll read here.
As we near a much-needed Break, I wanted to open this up, not to vent, but to focus on the positives, be it the ones from the first half of the season (yes there were some), or what you look forward to in the second half and beyond.
The clever folks at AN have come up with all sorts of witty ways to lament, but today is a day for silver line drives. In a crazy year that has seen so many lives cut short in the sports and entertainment world (as well as the death of the DLD?), let's take advantage of this day off from the diamond to stop and smell the roasted peanuts.
What are those A's-related things that translate to your Happy Place? Maybe it's the week we spent in Mazzaro World. Perhaps it's the awesomeness of Dallas Braden. Could be something as simple as a mojo cupcake.
So I plead with you AN to shower this thread with sweet sentiments, and save the sarcasm and snark for another day.
Like, say, tomorrow.

Just seeing the young guys show flashes of brilliance is what makes me happy.
I need to know that there is a light at the end of the dark, dreary and depressing tunnel.
LoneStranger - July 9, 2009
The young pitching, obviously
And the perception that we have no good hitting prospects is ridiculous. We may not have a Jason Heyward or Mike Stanton, but we have a bunch of players who project to be above average in Weeks, Cardenas, Carter, Green when he signs, Brown, Cunningham, and Buck.
And Kurt Suzuki. He’s awesome.

Hairston's first HR as an Athletic
T-Money - July 9, 2009
I was just reading a Q&A with Hairston on MLB.com
get this: he has 2 sons. Their names? Landon and Dallas. How cool is that!

May 26th was great fun, I totally agree....

budget
All the extra money in the budget for the team in the next few years. With 5 years of cost controlled awesome young pitching, we should be able to fill the offensive holes the Yankee way: with wads of cash.

Why it's better to be an A's fan, even these days
The nice thing about the A’s over my 40+ years is that they’ve either been really good (and occasionally won it all) or bad enough that you didn’t need to get stressed about losing. I’m not stressed about losing to the Sox – they need wins, and we need high draft picks. Works out fine. There are no other teams that have done this over that time frame.
I’m optimistic, too. Yeah, we suck now, but we’re young, the farm is deep, and free agent salaries might be a bit lower in the next couple years. We’ll be very good again, soon (I’m thinking 2011, not 2010.)
eastcoasta'sfan - July 9, 2009
Every time someone goes on as if the house is falling down and Beane needs to be guillotined, can you just copy and paste this?

Every time someone goes on as if the house is falling down and Beane needs to be guillotined, can you just copy and paste this?
Was that what you meant?
eastcoasta'sfan - July 9, 2009
The happy thought that keeps me going...
Hooray for good young pitching!!
I just try to think to myself that we have in the makings a 5-man rotation and 7-man bullpen for next season that has the potential to be top 5 in the AL and they will probably cost this team less then $10 mil total for the whole lot.
OkayJay81 - July 9, 2009
I like Hairston period
He’s not going to be the next MVP of the AL but he is an upgrade over what we currently have and is more along the lines of what the A’s should pick up more often. Let’s start getting good, reliable ballplayers for a fair price instead of trying to save money on the next Frank Thomas-like veteran.
Our pitching is going to be sick for the next 5 years so it shouldn’t take much of a lineup to get us into the playoffs. I’m behind BB and DF and believe they have learned some good lessons lately. Let’s hope that we have a brand new, shiny manager next year!
ohtobe21likehuston - July 9, 2009
i agree about the type of player to get
I hope we can pick up a Josh Willingham or Matt Diaz too.
Jessse - July 9, 2009
Mr. Brett Anderson and his first CG shut-out.
Dayum.
And Zooks. It’s been really fun to watch him this year because I believe he has finally put to rest many of the people that didn’t believe he could become something special. He may not be the best with the bat (though he’s still damn good) but he controls everything that happens at the plate as well as I can hope for right now.
Boonee - July 9, 2009
Zooks, Mazarro, Braden,
Outman—fighter of the hitman before he got hurt, Gio (I think he pulls it together if he keeps it all in), Anderson,
And, of course… this lovely event (H/T Technotofu) by King Brett:
(Interesting pic to pick for this article, eh 67M. Namingly since who’s in the middle of it.)

Hell, all the pitchers. I like having more pitching depth than any other team in MLB. And all of it being young. Hot damn.
Can we talk prospects as well? Then I want to say all the prospects who are doing awesome. We’ve got a ton of them.
Blicks - July 9, 2009
Also Outman will be out for a year and then we have him as a backup and FDLS is pitching again already
So even if the rotation next year is Braden, Anderson, Cahill, Mazzaro, Gio, they will have FDLS and Simmons in the wings.
Also add in all of our young, promising relief pitchers. and young hitters coming up.
We have the makings of a dynasty

As well as players mentioned above
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how good Wuertz has been. It’s nice that the team has him under control for a couple more years.
Also, I have a boner with Chris Carter’s name on it. Ok, I lie, there wasn’t room so it just says CC.
bobnothing - July 9, 2009
F******g hilarious! I love it!
Pitching, pitching, pitching. Young, talented, cost controlled pitching!
Zooks is a stud and my hand picked nomination for leader of this team.
Ellis coming back off the DL.
Hairston showing some flash with the bat
Bailey, Wuertz, & a healthy Ziggy out of the pen. pretty righteous combo if you ask me. A healthy Devine will only make it that much better.
All the talented kids coming up thru the minors in the next 1-2 years.
And the hope of a brand new shiny manager…..oh wait! Nevermind.
Go A’s!
mrod - July 9, 2009

Yes! And we have more of it than anyone else! Take that, AL! And NL!

All this positivity broke AN
at least for me, I couldn’t get on for a little bit.
Despite the rest of his poor performance I still look back fondly on Giambi’s first HR this year. It was cool because it made me think of happier times. It was cool when he hit his 400th also but i was on vacation and didn’t hear/see it live.
micdog2001 - July 9, 2009
Dallas Braden
The guy takes a rocket off his pitching hand, stays in the game, pitches very well, and wants to go in his next scheduled start with a hand that’s still swollen. Then there’s the Mazzaro pie face, the “chalk” outline of Sweeney in the outfield, his Stockton warm-up song that Fosse gets a huge kick out of, and his cool reaction when watching his relief pitcher squander a hard fought lead while being interviewed on live television. Did I mention he’s the ace and leader of the staff and he loves his grandma?
smokelanda - July 9, 2009
This plus all he does for Stockton and Pepe!
(Except the chalk outline which wasn’t him…or so that’s what I heard.)
ZigFan31 - July 9, 2009
Oh, really? Maybe people just assumed it was him, since I think that was the common perception.
smokelanda - July 9, 2009
I went to Chase Field two days ago
and the Fans there were nice. But I got a different vibe from them. A’s fans seem diehard, and more connected to the team in a personal way, whereas the Dbacks fans seemed to be more about all the hoopla, and less about the team roots/history (they don’t have much, save for the WS titles, so it’s not a fair comparison to the A’s, I guess). All this is not to bash the Dbacks, but rather commend the A’s for being a throwback when visiting the good ol’ ballpark. We may suck, but at least I feel we all suck together.
As far as this season is concerned, I’m really starting to like what I’m seeing out of Brett Anderson. He is looking kind of like Dan Haren did the pre A’s. Also, Dallas Braden, Josh Outman, Hairston, Kennedy, Bailey, and Mazzaro.
DyeLongJustice - July 9, 2009
Weirdest thing about Chase field for me:
It’s cold inside!

We were mentioned in a Fangraphs article!!!
Granted, the article was about Jack Cust’s sucktitude. But hey, positive thinking.
travdog6 - July 9, 2009
Print this out and send this to Beane and Geren please.
Blicks - July 9, 2009
Essentially it comes down to Cust
He is the one at the plate and he is the one that is employing a new approach. No one is putting a gun to his head and forcing him to swing more, and nobody but Cust can get him to revert to his old ways.
OkayJay81 - July 9, 2009
Cust is supposed to be hilarious in the clubhouse.
And there’s something to be said for levity when things aren’t going well. To be positive about him: he went 3-3 against Wakefield!
Technotofu - July 9, 2009
I don't mean to be negative about Cust
I’ve been a fan since he joined the A’s and I think he can turn things around after this poor half season. I just think using his struggles to pile on Geren is a bit misguided.
OkayJay81 - July 9, 2009
Suzuki and Braden
Our 2010 all stars!
I’ll be the first to admit that i couldnt stand Braden’s “swagger” if you will when he first came up, but he really has shown how much he has matured and became a leader this season! As for Suzuki what can you say that hasnt already been said this year, he is an all star all on and off the field
HeavyHitters510 - July 9, 2009
Well, really....
it’s only asinine arrogance if you can’t back it up. So far young Mr. Braden has shown that he can deliver the goods.
alox - July 9, 2009
I love Kurt...
…and what’s more, he’s my 8 year-old son’s favorite player. It’s nice when your kid gravitates to an actual role model.
Technotofu - July 9, 2009
I hope he's in the GNG for many years to come.
Great catchers are not a dime a dozen and Kurt is such a great presence on this team, especially handling the pitching staff.
Kurt’s a keeper Billy….don’t even think about trading him anytime soon!

Things I've enjoyed this year
Brett Anderson’s shutout in Boston
Gio’s great performance in Cleveland
Dallas Braden’s toughness and killer changeup
Mazzaro’s first start in Chicago
Josh Outman’s stirrups
Michael Wuertz’s slider
Andrew Bailey coming out of nowhere to make the All-Star team and claim the closer role
Adam Kennedy rising from the grave to help out the team
Kurt Suzuki’s overall play
Travis Buck’s infield single to beat Boston
Ryan Sweeney robbing Kinsler of an HR and saving the game
The Edgar Gonzalez recoil
Braden’s finger mustache tattoo
zenlunatic - July 9, 2009
Pepe.

Technotofu - July 9, 2009
The promise for the future
During the years in the tank, in the late ‘70s, mid ’80s and mid ’90s, not only were the teams bad, but the prospects weren’t very promising either.
When you look at the combination of Mazzaro, Cahill and Anderson, plus Gio, you can figure that while there could be some backsliding, most likely at least one will make the transition to elite pitcher in 2010, with more coming in 2011. Throw in Braden and (at some point in 2010 but more likely 2011) Josh Outman, and you have an incredible starting staff, six men deep.
Then you look at Bailey, Ziggy, Weurtz and Devine for 2010, the relief staff looks equally great.
Position players, though? It’s a pretty rag-tag group, other than Suzuki.
richwol1 - July 9, 2009
Don't forget about probably the A's top rated Pitcher prospect of spring 2008 in FDLS
I am excited about him. He is good stuff and hopefully is going to come back strong. He is already pitching in Arizona

I LOVE Suzuki
I’m really liking Hairston too…I love Braden more than I thought possible, and the young kids too. Cahill, Anderson, and Mazarro have all the potential in the world.
I also like game thread therapy. As the games go on, the more stories are told, and it’s awesome. I want to hear everyone’s story. :-)

Josh Outman bouncing back from a rough start to the season to become a possible future all-star
DownByTheBay - July 9, 2009
My positive thought is that soon Matt Holliday will be gone.
I cannot wait to see what young guys Billy can get for Holliday. Will be a fun trade deadline and getting rid of Matt will make me smile. Last homer, June 5th…haha. good riddance. Cant wait.
OaktownPower - July 9, 2009
I know, I'm so excited that the best hitter on the team is gonna be gone!!!!
mikev - July 9, 2009
Best hitter or not....
There is zero chance he is staying and he is producing nowhere near what was expected of him. He also appears very disinterested in the OF and on the bases. So yea, bring on the prospects..I’m tired of watching him go through the motions and under perform (for him).
OaktownPower - July 9, 2009
I think the fact that his performance is down actually helps the chances that he'll be with the team next year.
If he doesn’t step it up for the second half, no one is going to want to pay him much, especially in this market. If the A’s offer him arbitration (and they have to in order to get the picks) he and his agent might decide that one more year in Oakland would be better for him. He would probably get a better deal/year than he would on the open market. It would give him a chance to raise his value, wait out the poor economy and shoot for a better long term contract starting in 2011.
I don’t think I’d be upset either way. Picks would be nice, but if Holliday really tries next year, would that be a bad thing for the team?
LoneStranger - July 9, 2009
I can see that side.
Though, heh heh, if I told the one of people I supervise….“you need to really really try better” Sure, not the same thing I know. but still.
ak_A - July 9, 2009
Actually he would probably sign a 1 year contract with a team at a location where he could excel
Eastbayjim - July 9, 2009
My favorite of this season is Trevor cahill
I’m a soon to be senior in high school and I have loved the A’s ever since I can remember and it gives me a great sense of pride knowing that Trevor graduated from my high school just a few years ago, and now he’s pitching for my favorite team.
Twan54321 - July 9, 2009 via mobile
thx 67M
Thanks for the quote-link as well, glad I can provide some cynical-yet-amusing entertainment for all of you friends.
There’s probably a lot more gnashing and drowning-in-own-tears moments coming in the short term future, but we’d all be on crack rocks if we didn’t absorb the obvious fact that with any kind of bats supporting them in 2010-11, these pitchers could be as good as the Big 3 if not better, so in the long term there is at least some demonstrable harbinger of Hope if we are willing to sit through the torture we are being subjected to in 2009… we may yet see a day (hopefully by 2010, but don’t hold thy breath) where this team amounts to more than a 9th-inning TeA’se…
emperor nobody - July 9, 2009
That first one was the best...instant classic.
pam5981 - July 9, 2009
I'd like to see a strong second half push.
Just for old times sake. The thing is, I think that this team could conceivable pull it off. Granted, the playoffs are out of the question, but still, I’d like to give the Angels reason to fear for the next few seasons. I would find that very satisfying indeed.
alox - July 9, 2009
i hope that they will lose as much as possible
so the vegas odds of them winning the division next year shifts in my favor
rktse - July 9, 2009
The higher draft picks would be nice.
But I find it hard to root against my teams for any reason.
LoneStranger - July 9, 2009
I already blew 5 bucks on them winning the WS this year
80-1 odds this year….next year? Depends on what happens for the rest of this season with Holliday and what happens in the off-season.
Me want J.J. Hardy!

Besides FDLS, there aren’t really any high potential arms left in the farm that can challenge Gio for the last spot (and this is assuming Gallagher is the PTBNL). Gio is definitely a better option than Eveland, and unless Simmons really impresses in Spring Training, he’ll be in AAA.
