The A's have searched the land far and wide, on buses and on planes traveling east, west, north, and south, and they have finally found it -- an American League team with a worse record than the Oakland A's!!! In the American League, only the Indians sport a winning percentage under .400 -- .388, better only than the Washington Nationals, whose .289 mark would still lead the A's in batting.
The A's send Trevor Cahill to the mound tonight against David Huff (pronounced "ha-OO-gah-huh"), not to be confused with Charlie Hough. Or with Aubrey Huff. Or certainly not with Melvin Mora, because that would just be weird.
Today's "fun fact": At home so far this season, Cahill has walked 13 batters in 59.2 IP. On the road, he has walked 21 batters in 29.2 IP.

What took you so long?

Game threads are often posted 15-30 minutes before gametime

I was being sarcastic
adragon - July 3, 2009
No Buck. Geren deserves to be kneecapped.
OldhamA - July 3, 2009
As a former catcher I don't know if he would even feel it
but I agree that Cust should not be allowed to play in the field
adragon - July 3, 2009
I would really love to hear his reasoning on this.
But he’d probably just say something stupid while looking as if he needs to defecate.
Technotofu - July 3, 2009
No ellis?
I thought the off day would give him enough rest
chipper1001 - July 3, 2009
Has another baby on the way
SwisherThresher - July 3, 2009
Birth of his child apparently.
Slacker I know.
OldhamA - July 3, 2009
Shouldn't his work already be done?
Just saying…
Slappyfrog - July 3, 2009
How many A's babies is that this year?
BleedGreen - July 3, 2009
I think this is the fourth.

The A's may not be scoring on the field, but off the field...

If their wives are delivering during this season,
they aren’t scoring now.

Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
That's dependent upon the pitcher.
Esteban could not throw it past JG.

JJ Martin - July 3, 2009
you were out of your seat, apparently.

D) strike out

Nico - July 3, 2009
You can tell that Ken K. doesn't like strickouts.
Especially the called third ones that fail to move runners over. You can just hear it in his voice.
Nico - July 3, 2009
That's strange.
I hear disappointment in my vocational choices in KK’s voice…

3 doubles in the first 6 A’s batters
adragon - July 3, 2009
Kennedy, Suzuki and Garciaparra all hit doubles. Holliday scored Kennedy on a ground out and Garciaparra scored Suzuki on a double. Giambi, Cust and Sweeney have all struck out.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
Crosby is doing his best not to strikeout.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009

JJ Martin - July 3, 2009
I don’t know, but he just struck out swinging.

Just got back from Emergency room at Garden Grove Hospital
Decided to ride bike to Bank, got out front door, the phone rang, I answered it, ran over something, bike flipped over and my shoulder hit the ground and the handlebars dug into my ribs.
I have sprained ligaments in shoulder as it go out of joint when I raise my arm and I have a broken rib.
Oh well shit happens
$2052.00 bill as I no have health insurance. !st visit to Doctor or hospital in 22 years.
A’s better win
Trainman - July 3, 2009
Man talk about a bad day
hope you feel better/A’s win
adragon - July 3, 2009
Oh good Lord
Now that’s a FML story right there. Are those injuries going to affect your work on top of the bills?
Wiers103 - July 3, 2009
It pisses me off that I cannot work out for a week or two
If I raise my shoulder like in the chicken wing position it clicks out of the socket and feels weird. They have it in a sling. I have had broken ribs before when a racehorse I was training kicked me and broke 3 of them. My training partner put the horse (stallion) with a mare who was in heat. We were jogging about 6 of them with the tractor and the stallion got a little excited when he sniffed the mare and as I was taking his rug off to get ready to jog him, he gave me both barrells under the armpit and broke the three ribs there on the side. Me being hung over from the night before kinda slowed my reactions down. LOL
Trainman - July 3, 2009
Hope you heal quick
sirbed - July 3, 2009
Its the same ribs that took all the damage?
Wiers103 - July 3, 2009
Yeah one of them

Ouch.
Hope you feel better soon, man.

My Blood pressure was thru the roof.
150/90 the second time. The first time was 158/112 but I walked a mile to the hospital and was in immense pain. The doctor said, "Don’t worry aboit your blood pressure, it’s because of the trauma.

Figuratively or literally?
walkoff baltimore chop - July 3, 2009
Fucking ump
adragon - July 3, 2009
for those of you listening to mlb.com audio KTRB feed
how is the volume?
I have it up on maximum — and my computer too — but can barely hear it.
(Nothing wrong with my ears or the computer, as I’ve listened to other audio and video programs streaming online today with normal sound.)
OaklandSi - July 3, 2009
same here
Trainman - July 3, 2009
yup but it's been a season long problem for me
sirbed - July 3, 2009
I haven't noticed a problem with volume
(though I was away for a few minutes just now).
I have noticed that a few adds are having weird glitches. Sounds like the tape is skipping or something, but isn’t everything digital now?
iglew - July 3, 2009
I noticed this earlier when I was in the car listening to Marty
Then the pregame show seemed to be better.
Englishmajor - July 3, 2009
I'm listening online, not on the radio
sometimes the sound is loud enough, but sometimes you can barely hear the game. (It’s a little better now than it was earlier in the game.)
At least online I don’t hear the weird reception sounds that we often get on the radio.
OaklandSi - July 3, 2009
I agree on the ump.
But this game and last Cahill’s velocity has been down. We’ve been worrying about his workload this season. Maybe the A’s can skip his turn next time through the rotation. An extra few days off seemed to help Anderson.
Nick - July 3, 2009
Come on Cahill
Find the freaking zone!!!
VV A's fan - July 3, 2009
we're gettin squeezed
Wiers103 - July 3, 2009

ugh, Crosby

crap...i didn't realize the inning started on a crosby error.

I get to say that as I am injured
Trainman - July 3, 2009
But
I’m sure they gave you an awesome prescription for pain meds right?
Wiers103 - July 3, 2009
Hey can you give Crosby your bike to ride?
sirbed - July 3, 2009
Neither one of those were easy plays for an experienced 3b, let alone Crosby, but neither
play was that difficult for Giambi, or Barton
theblackpearl - July 3, 2009
Good thing they sent Hannahan down.
sox1844 - July 3, 2009
Yep
Cahill can get all the grounders he needs, but his D is betraying him.

He's high?
Well, that explains his hitting this year
Nick - July 3, 2009
I’d kill to see that.

fruitattack - July 3, 2009
Cahill's overall motion makes me very tired
I think he has to tighten it up a bit.
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
Okay, I'm now definitely in favor of skipping Cahill next time through the rotation
He’s lost velocity, he’s losing command (though that’s been spotty this year anyway), and the team needs to limit his IP this year somehow.
Nick - July 3, 2009
damn, i thought they had him at third
ak_A - July 3, 2009
And the decision to throw home on that relay was really, really bad

1. I hate the red caps.
2. Although apparently Nomar got a hit earlier, I am starting to wish he would just end up on the DL again so that Geren wouldn’t be tempted to actually put him in the lineup.
3. Aw, Briggs has a little sister! Yay.

+1 to all
So I guess that’s a +3
Nick - July 3, 2009
No, it's still +1
By original etymology, “+1” refers to one more person who feels the same way. If you aren’t more than one person, you shouldn’t ever say more than +1.

Deborah51 - July 3, 2009
But enough about the 2009 season
Nico - July 3, 2009
Yuckaroni
sirbed - July 3, 2009
I guess I expect too much.
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Nice way to start the holiday weekend...
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
about time they pulled him
VV A's fan - July 3, 2009
This is what Washington Nationals fans experience every season?!
Ouch.
thesteve9x - July 3, 2009
so, who got....oh, Casillia
the run manufacturer.
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Geez. Now we got Rickey-ized!
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
God I hate this ump
Nick - July 3, 2009
but Casilla sure doesn't need to act like he's Don Drysdale
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
one - manufactured
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Huh?
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
run
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Ok...
got it?
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
I am going to lie down and watch something else
these fuckers are going to irritate my already beaten up left side
Trainman - July 3, 2009
Your A's infield?
Nico - July 3, 2009
Infield....outfield....
haven’t seen much in the way of bright spots yet!
BERRYJO - July 3, 2009
Or totally elevate your blood pressure!
BERRYJO - July 3, 2009
and the casillia assembly line is now shut down for now
ak_A - July 3, 2009
i will take that.
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Their SS isn't any better at 3B than ours
Nick - July 3, 2009
This is unwatchable
When the Jack-in-the-Box commercials are interesting, you know the game is bad.
Bet Petit would have held the throw from Suzuki. Maybe throw was late but it doesn’t matter if you don’t hold onto it. Giants game is on in an hour.
OkieBill - July 3, 2009
Giants?
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
Are you advocating for a guy with a career .694 OPS to be playing?
Why does everyone want petit?
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
.694 is better than 5 of today’s starters. My only point is Petit has not had the chance to play is
way out of (hopefully onto, not out of) the lineup like other players have. Buck and Petit both should
be have a better shot at proving they can be everyday players. Obviously 3 runs isn’t enough tonight
which proves you CAN have too much pitching.
OkieBill - July 3, 2009
It's .694 in the minor leagues btw
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
Also,
how does that prove you can have too much pitching? How has Petit earned a shot at playing in the bigs ever?
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
He can catch the ball and he plays infield for the A's organization
That’s pretty good credentials at the ol’ moment!
Nico - July 3, 2009
No. Its .694 in the majors and it was .800+over 14 games last year. That proves my point.
OkieBill - July 3, 2009
Nope
It’s .694 in the Minors, .637 in the majors. The guy sucks. Also, 14 games, (23 at bats) is a tiny sample size. The guy is just not very good.
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
Kennedy doesn't seem to see the ball well against Huff
Nick - July 3, 2009
Kennedy came in hitting .152 against left-handed pitching.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
Nico- Was glad to see that you weren't the Norcal teacher
who accidentally slipped a sex scene into the 5th grader highlight video. I was worried when I originally read the headline.

Baseball is hard
Nick - July 3, 2009
I played for about 12 years and don't remember it being this tough
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
This is an ugly game.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
whoa, another break - this could be the start
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Or not
Nick - July 3, 2009
shit
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Even the Indians couldn’t screw up a second chance on a double play, right?
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
i don't think i can take much more of this
WE. ARE. PATHETIC!!!!!!!!
Deborah51 - July 3, 2009
Only our errors hurt us
Theirs, they get a DP and will no doubt get out of it.
Trainman - July 3, 2009
What exactly was Holliday looking for when he took the 3-1 pitch?
Nick - July 3, 2009
That question you pose
just illustrates what a terrible hitting team this is.
If I was the manager/htting coach. I say, "SWING AT EVRYTHING AND ANYTHING that is near the zone. Swing like You are Vlad Guerrero in his prime. I bet money they score more runs.
Taking any strikes at all is a waste for these hitters
Trainman - July 3, 2009
When this team has continually exhibited that they can't hit,
why would you have them swing more?
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
I disagree with that
Vlad Guerrero has been successful because he’s so incredibly physically gifted, and so good at hitting a baseball, that he can ignore the strike zone.
The A’s don’t have any hitters who are as talented as Vlad Guerrero in his prime.
Virtually anyone else who “swings at everything and anything that is near the zone” will completely suck. And yes, the A’s could hit even worse than they’ve hit this year.
Nick - July 3, 2009
You're totally overlooking
Juan Uribe!
Nico - July 3, 2009
Today is Nomar’s first start at a position since May 23rd.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
Can it be his last until the same amount of time passes?
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
If Barton and Hannahan were starting at the corners,
this game might have been close until now. Provided that the home plate umpire, of course, agreed to call strikes even when rookies threw them.
Nico - July 3, 2009
dandy - two on - no outs
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Ah, the customary Sweeney jump on balls off the end of the bat
Nico - July 3, 2009
you are the blogmaster tonight - "Loco in control"
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Ay yai yai!!!
Nico - July 3, 2009
I still like Ryan Sweeney.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
And I still don't!
Nico - July 3, 2009
He’s like one of the three best hitters on the team, though, still.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
Meh. A .250 hitter with little power n'excite me pas.
Nico - July 3, 2009
Well, he hit .286 last year and came in hitting .270.
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
Until he hits for some power he won't interest me
He already can’t hit LHP nor does he have the speed to play CF or be of much use on the bases.
Nico - July 3, 2009
crimony
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Casilla is looking like his career is completely over
if it really ever got started.
ohtobe21likehuston - July 3, 2009
well this game has certainly spun out of control
OaklandSi - July 3, 2009
Billy’s track record is not to put up with this type of shit, but maybe he has mellowed in his old age!!
robertmelvin - July 3, 2009
four more innings - too hot for outside - i will stick it out
ak_A - July 3, 2009
Yeah, I'm done watching.
VV A's fan - July 3, 2009
Go Giants!
A Bay Area team with a shot at the playoffs, and some interesting players. Sorry, but that’s what I’ll be watching come 7:00pm.
Nico - July 3, 2009
Boo!
Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
I will never root for the Giants.
travdog6 - July 3, 2009

Rated-R Superstar - July 3, 2009
I think I would just die.
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
does that no goes against your contract?
what an example you are setting.
ak_A - July 3, 2009
The A's are setting it, not me
You have to give your fans a reason to watch and the A’s just aren’t doing it.
Nico - July 3, 2009
Would it be wrong for Zook to call for a pitchout
and or Breslow to “forget” and just heave a fastball right at the ump?
Nick - July 3, 2009
"Wrong" or "gritty old school"?
It’s such a fine line.
Nico - July 3, 2009
Ahh, but you see, those two are not mutually exclusive.
It was wrong, and gritty old school for the giants to give Aaron Rowand 9 million dollars.
travdog6 - July 3, 2009
this strike zone is atrocious
first and last pitches against Grady were strikes
SoCalA'sFan - July 3, 2009
That just happened at some school in Ohio I think, saw it on the news… the catcher ducked and the pitcher drilled the ump in the face.
sox1844 - July 3, 2009
the most exciting thing in this game is grady and a. cabrera on my fantasy team scoring big for me
SoCalA'sFan - July 3, 2009
Ha, Nomar actually caught it.

Last 5 Indian Games
Am in Bangkok watching the MLB.com TV feed out of Cleveland, and it was just noted that the Indians have scored more tonight than their last 5 games.
robertmelvin - July 3, 2009
Awesome. Glad the A's could help get the Tribe back on track
100% slumpbusters
SwisherThresher - July 3, 2009
Oh, good lord.
pam5981 - July 3, 2009
Losing by 10 runs and the ugly hats, too. Terrible.
pam5981 - July 3, 2009
On the radio,
we’re only losing by 10 runs.
I’m imagining bright green throwback uniforms with yellow Skittles helmets.
