Vin Mazzaro has stuck out six batters through three innings, and a sac fly by Jack Cust, followed by an RBI-single by Bobby Crosby have put the A's on top of the Yankees, 2-love.
but when your #1 tourist destination in your city are the murder sites of the most notorious unapprehended serial killer in US history, you’ve got a little bit of an image problem.
has maintained a sterling image. The dude has class, unlike so many other pro athletes. Give him the credit he deserves, even though a good portion of it may be for merely having good sense in lieu of actual skills. Though he’s good at baseball too.
Just got to give the evil ones their props. Know thy enemy. Is it possible we could get some females (or males) to place him in a compromising position?
The guy is a good player. His national reputation is greatly enhanced by playing in New York. If he played just about anywhere else, he wouldn’t be lauded the way he is.
I'd argue his defensive shortcomings wouldn't be as much of an issue.
People love to hate him and his defence is the only place they can question his game. If he was out of the spotlight, say in KC people would be saying “hey, who’s this incredible hitter that plays SS for the Royals?”
The kid still has six strike outs against one of the most formidable lineups in baseball. He’s given up four runs to the likes of Tex, Arod, and Posada. He’s learning.
Sabthia has been clubbed by the worst offensive team in the league, so...
…Mazzaro giving up four to the best offensive team ain’t so bad…unless the Yankees score 27 more runs.
My question is, why can’t the A’s swing at 3-0 pitches? Hell, they’re out-stealing the Angels lately, why can’t they alter their batting habits on 3-0? If the idea of batting patience is to get the best pitch to drive, what pitch is most likely to be the most “drivable,” if that is a word? Mark Texieria, a superb hitter, swings 3-0, so why wouldn’t lesser hitters swing at the most “drivable” pitch they’re likely to get? This has been discussed before, but I have never heard a reasonable answer.

and there’s no more in the glass, so I am trying to suck the last bit of it out of the ice, and then just for kicks I check the can to see if there is any left because my memory is completely shot, and there’s more Pepsi! And then I drink it. I like Pepsi.
Its a tough learning curve this pitching in the major leagues. It took half a season for Anderson to figure it out and Cahill has shown flashes of brilliance.

pam5981 - July 23, 2009
Why's that?
Team is going nowhere, may as well let him take his licks in a lost season. He clearly has ML stuff.
OldhamA - July 23, 2009
Agree
It’s not like there is anybody at AAA ready to take his place.
doctorK - July 23, 2009
How many loses in a row do you want him to get?
sirbed - July 23, 2009
Who cares
He hasn’t pitched that poorly tonight. 6 strikeouts in 4 innings against the freaking Yankees is something to build on.
walk off bunt - July 23, 2009
And not to mention
THE GAME ISN’T OVER YET. We are only down by one run!
pam5981 - July 23, 2009
With a man on and nobody out, no less
walk off bunt - July 23, 2009
so you believe in the grittiness/clutch factor with Jeter,
but poo poo the psychological factor of letting a young pitcher repeatedly fail.
Leopold Bloom - July 23, 2009
what? I think Jeter is the most overrated player in my lifetime
sirbed - July 23, 2009
I've not cited Jeter's grit/clutchness, merely the fact his batting stats are exceptionally good.
OldhamA - July 23, 2009
you down with OPS?
Leopold Bloom - July 23, 2009
I'm down with OPP
sirbed - July 23, 2009
Other people's personality?
ohtobe21likehuston - July 23, 2009
Yes.
OldhamA - July 23, 2009
I don't think he repeatedly fails.
The kid still has six strike outs against one of the most formidable lineups in baseball. He’s given up four runs to the likes of Tex, Arod, and Posada. He’s learning.
alox - July 23, 2009
IN Yankee Stadium, no less.
walk off bunt - July 23, 2009
NO CASILLA!!!!!!!!
Technotofu - July 23, 2009
Yankees have sure figured out Vin this inning
Cut down their swings and teeing off
Pitching with no one on = fine

thank god for casilla staying in the pen...
jlanning17 - July 23, 2009 via mobile
It's okay, Vin.
Remember, this is the team that scored 14 runs on Monday and 16 runs yesterday. They’ll get you some more runs.
(…right?)

Yeah!!!!
I’m feeling really optimistic today.

ak_A - July 23, 2009
Let's Go Oak-land!
SwisherThresher - July 23, 2009
This has been discussed before, but I have never heard a reasonable answer.
ptbarnum - July 23, 2009
I was just thinking the same thing
3-0 and 3-1 they just watch the pitch go by.
Trainman - July 23, 2009
I hesitate to say we've been
“clubbing” CC, we’ve gotten some timely hits, but that doesn’t rate very highly as a clubbing.
BleedGreen - July 23, 2009
one word
Dicisipline and sadly the A’s are not very diciplined at the plate

is letting them work out of 4th/5th inning jams. I think until he hit 100 pitches, it made sense to leave Mazzaro out there.
