I just got home, was listening in the car to ESPN Radio
Apparently many more ESPN listeners and/or KNBR listeners are in trouble with the IRS than is true for our audience. But the ad that made me long for MGD was this:
(Young woman who can’t act #1) It’s such a hot day, why are you wearing those ugly shoes? (Young woman who can’t act #2)[After long pause meant to be full of meaning, but actually suggesting that her script fell on the floor and she can’t remember her line without it] Toenail fungus.
Using his relievers who can’t pitch many innings earlier in the game, so he has SP guys who can pitch multiples later in the game if the game goes into extras, while Maddon is using SPs the whole way. And maximizing the number of pitchers who pitch in the game.
Especially now that there’s interleague play, the team with the better record should get home field.
(And mlb’s excuse that this would make it harder to plan ahead is really lame. Now, the world series could start in either of two cities once the LCS’s begin. Under the other scenario it would be any of three. Not a big difference.)
I'm probably in the minorty but I liked the it better when the all star game didn't count. Seemed a lot more fun to watch and play. (Ray Fosse exlcluded)
Beckett, Wakefield, Verlander, and Fuentes should all be off the team. Beckett and Verlander are having very very good seasons, but the rotation is too crowded. Verlander should be on the team ahead of Buehrle, but he is Chicago’s only rep. With my edits, there are 9 pitchers, which is perfect.
Verlander really should be on the team, but Buehrle prevents that.
I think Papelbon deserves it. ERA under 2. How Brian Fuentes got on the team is beyond me. An all-star closer should not have an ERA over 3. I think that should be written into the rulebook.
The Wakefield pick is incredibly horrifically bad. Guys with career ERAs over 4 do not deserve lifetime achievement awards. That is another thing that should be written into the rulebook.
You really have to put Rivera in there? The guy’s had enough chances to save All Star Games, put someone else in there.
Yeah, I understand that he’s great and bullshit-bullshit-bullshit, but c’mon.
He gets there every year, let someone else try to save this thing…
Keith Lieppman, the A’s longtime director of player development, thinks Daric Barton should get another shot. "He’s regained his stroke at Sacramento and looks like the hitter we thought he’d be," said Lieppman in a telephone conversation, "and he’s developed power, which he didn’t have before. He’s hit five home runs in just a few games since he came back to Sacramento."
By next year, Chris Carter, one of two A’s farm hands who played in the Sunday Futures game (Jemile Weeks was the other), should be ready for his shot.
"He struck out too many times last year [156 in 137 games]," said Lieppman. "He’s working on getting his strikeouts down and making more contact."
Lieppman likes outfielders Travis Buck and Aaron Cunningham, both of whom have been up with the A’s but are in Sacramento now. He thinks Josh Donaldson, now at Midlands, has a shot in the near future. "We signed him as a third baseman and converted him to catcher, but with Kurt Suzuki playing so well, we’ll probably shift him back to third."
The A’s likely will need a shortstop next year because Orlando Cabrera probably won’t return. Chad Pennington is the most likely candidate, though he probably won’t be up until September. Adrian Cardenas, who was promoted to Sacramento after hitting .350 at Midland, can play anywhere on the infield but is probably not good enough to play shortstop every day. Eric Patterson is another versatile player. "We see him as a Chone Figgins type," Lieppman said.

Blicks - July 14, 2009
Well, this could be the game right here.
Rated-R Superstar - July 14, 2009
well maybe if it goes to extra innings we could see bailey?
OakA'sHoney - July 14, 2009
Factoid.
ElQuesoCapitan - July 14, 2009
That’s what it’s going to have to be.
Rated-R Superstar - July 14, 2009
But then he might have to pitch three innings and bat twice to save precious Wakefield
chillicothe20 - July 14, 2009
FAILtes warming up.
Blicks - July 14, 2009
Matt Cain looks like a grown-up Bobby Hill
doctorK - July 14, 2009
Nathan gets the job done.
Rated-R Superstar - July 14, 2009
Now, I don't want to seem ungracious here
but this is hardly exhibition stuff, is it.
it’s like watching the US in the WBC
bobnothing - July 14, 2009
Or Olympic baseball
especially since MLB players aren’t allowed to play.
Blicks - July 14, 2009
I'm probably in the minorty but I liked the it better when the all star game didn't count. Seemed a lot more fun to watch and play. (Ray Fosse exlcluded)
attijah - July 14, 2009
yeah, i mean more
no-one seems to be producing their best form, yknow?
bobnothing - July 14, 2009
See, Nathan is classy
He doesn’t point to the sky or the ground or pump his fists like a baboon when he gets the job done (See: K-Rod, Joba, Papelbon)
Blicks - July 14, 2009
Baboons are more subtle than K-Rod
chillicothe20 - July 14, 2009
Baboons are gentlemen compared to K-rod.
ElQuesoCapitan - July 14, 2009
Baboons have a nice ass compared to K-Rod.
Nico - July 14, 2009
K-FRAUD sighting
Go AL, GO!
doctorK - July 14, 2009
yeah, I would not be sad if he got shelled here
bobnothing - July 14, 2009
We need a K-Fraud FAIL pic right about now.
There’s got to be some.
Blicks - July 14, 2009
Not a very good one, but here
doctorK - July 14, 2009
That works. Thx.
Bonus points since it was the A’s owning him.
Blicks - July 14, 2009
Damn, nice play by Werth

Nice Play!
GreenNGoldSooner - July 14, 2009
That was a SWEET catch.
pam5981 - July 14, 2009

And K-Fraud points to the sky.

Gravity!
Blicks - July 14, 2009
Because... THIS TIME IT COUNTS
Didn’t you get that memo?
JLaff - July 14, 2009
Beckett, Wakefield, Verlander, and Fuentes should all be off the team. Beckett and Verlander are having very very good seasons, but the rotation is too crowded. Verlander should be on the team ahead of Buehrle, but he is Chicago’s only rep. With my edits, there are 9 pitchers, which is perfect.
rollonubears - July 14, 2009
Rollonubears!

Rated-R! I came over here just to see you.

rollonubears - July 14, 2009
How’s it going, pal?
Rated-R Superstar - July 14, 2009
Well I hit a lady golfing today. I yelled fore at the top of my lungs too. She didn’t look up. It one-hopped into her, so it didn’t hurt her.
rollonubears - July 14, 2009
It’s her fault since she was warned.
Rated-R Superstar - July 14, 2009
I still felt bad. You can’t just hit someone with a golf ball and not feel bad.
rollonubears - July 14, 2009
Depends who you hit
Nico - July 14, 2009
Verlander is very, very very good.
Beckett, Wakefield, Papelbon, and Fuentes I agree with.
Blicks - July 14, 2009
Verlander really should be on the team, but Buehrle prevents that.
I think Papelbon deserves it. ERA under 2. How Brian Fuentes got on the team is beyond me. An all-star closer should not have an ERA over 3. I think that should be written into the rulebook.
The Wakefield pick is incredibly horrifically bad. Guys with career ERAs over 4 do not deserve lifetime achievement awards. That is another thing that should be written into the rulebook.
rollonubears - July 14, 2009
I still think Zooks deserved to go!
GreenNGoldSooner - July 14, 2009
That would’ve made my day.

You really have to put Rivera in there? The guy’s had enough chances to save All Star Games, put someone else in there.
Yeah, I understand that he’s great and bullshit-bullshit-bullshit, but c’mon.
He gets there every year, let someone else try to save this thing…

Papelbon gives up a HR followed by a ball to the wall followed by an out and gets: A win with a 0.00 WHIP!

Chad Pennington to A's!!

Cliff Pennington.

Chad Pennington does exist. He's the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins
Yes, he can play third. But no, we cannot afford him.

I don't know I've seen
that guy’s arm I don’t know if Chad can make the throw from third to first without a couple of bounces.
