With the 13th pick in the 2009 amateur draft, the
OK… now what?

I’m not going to write up a detailed scouting report for you, there are a couple examples on the draft thread that I’ll link too instead. The bottom line is a lot of people (including, one hopes, the scouting department and general management of the Oakland Athletics) think that Green can be a good starting SS in the big leagues. Will he achieve what is expected of him? I have no idea, but he faced 3 years of legitimate competition in the Pac-10 and spent some time in the Cape Cod League so it’s not like he hasn’t cleared some hurdles already.
The big question is, how quickly can the A’s sign Green and get him in their development program? Green is represented by Scott Boras and Mr. Boras is known for hardball dealing and not letting his clients sign until near the deadline… that’s how he gets top dollar for his people. I understand that Green is likely to require an above-slot bonus to come to terms. I can accept that as the cost of doing business. What I cannot tolerate is the idea that the A’s don’t get Green signed ASAP and into their farm system. Having Green sit on the sidelines for two months is unacceptable. This is a player with the potential to move quickly and get to the Show and play a position of need in the
Major League Baseball has requested that teams cut the recommended slot bonuses by 10% from last year in an effort to control costs. That means the MLB recommended bonus for the 13th overall pick in the 2009 draft is $1.656 million. The A’s already know that
The A’s aren’t going to win a price war with Scott Boras; they aren’t going to get Green to sign on their financial terms. Victory can only be achieved by finding the price tag quickly and getting the deal done. Get Green into an A’s uniform and get him playing professional baseball. Drafting Green was the easy part, now is when the work starts.

$2.27M?
I think the offers START at $4M.
rageon - June 9, 2009
Like I said, I haven't heard a number from the Boras camp
All I know is the A’s have two and a quarter million they were going to be spending on slot bonuses for their 1st and 3rd round draft picks.
grover - June 9, 2009
Above slot is fine...
…but anything much above $2-2.25 million is silly. Green is a solid 1st round pick, but he’s hardly a sure thing. If Boras is aiming for $4 million (or anywhere close), then it probably doesn’t get done.
andyinfremont - June 9, 2009
$50 and a case of beer of your choice
That’s my offer to anyone who would be willing to beat Scott Boras with a sack of doorknobs.
Joey C. - June 9, 2009
your offer is intriguing.
Leopold Bloom - June 9, 2009
will you supply the doorknobs?
robbo650 - June 9, 2009
Will I!
Joey C. - June 9, 2009
Plane tickets?
OldhamA - June 9, 2009
any benefits?
ElQuesoCapitan - June 9, 2009
I just don't get why people have it in for Scott Boras
His job is to get the most money for his clients. For the most part, he’s very good at it.
Isn’t that the American way?
bobnothing - June 9, 2009
You just answered your first sentence with your third one.
Nico - June 9, 2009
How much college
eligibility does green have left?
alox - June 9, 2009
He's a Junior
grover - June 9, 2009
Did the A's draft out of need for the second straight year?
No bias here, just asking.
Pucking Insane - June 9, 2009
apparently no
not according to twitter.
Zonis - June 9, 2009
the A's twitter?
micdog2001 - June 9, 2009
Did today during the draft
grover - June 9, 2009
More than any other MLB team did
Sounds cool.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Yes and No
Obviously SS is a need in Oakland, so that probably influenced the A’s board.
But Green was a legit pick at #13, there was some thought he might go in the Top 10 or at #12 to KC. So the A’s didn’t reach to grab him.
Where there better players available at #13? If you like Schepper, then yeah. But Crow, Leake and Matzek were off the board and I (personally) didn’t have a clear favorite at the spot.
grover - June 9, 2009
I'm glad they took a SS who was thought to possibly go higher,
rather than a promising pitcher who has already raised health concerns. Pitchers get injured a lot and the A’s could easily wind up with nothing to show for the pick. Green, like every prospect, is a risk too but I think this was the right choice.
Nico - June 9, 2009
Agreed
Green is a top-ten prospect in this draft that we got at 13. Good deal. Upside is what people thought Tulowitzki would be after his rookie year, which is damn solid for a SS.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Let's play hardball with Boras:
Scott, your client Green signs for $2million now, or Matt Holliday rides the pine the rest of the season going into his free agency.
Now THAT’S a lose-lose scenario I can get behind.
Nico - June 9, 2009
How do the a's lose?
He will still be type a.
Future Ed - June 9, 2009
Is that legal?
Its not the worst idea.
ChadGod - June 9, 2009
legal, who knows
opening yourself up to other retaliation in the same ‘legal’ vein – oh yes, big time.
MobiusKlein - June 9, 2009
Yeah...
Good luck ever signing free agents again.
brenarlo - June 10, 2009
Instead of having him ride the pine, put him as 3B
Now that’s a win-lose-lose-win scenario!
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
or holliday will wake up
in buffalo bill’s basement
robbo650 - June 9, 2009
Too Precious, Starling!
Now put the lotion in the ducking basket.
LowcountryJoe - June 9, 2009
Sounds like something Boras would do
I like it
adragon - June 9, 2009
Dang, there goes Everett Williams
Would’ve liked to see him last to 92.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Could Matt Davidson make it to 92?
Would you want him if he did?
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Yes and yes.
although I’m still huge on Stock.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Didn't Davidson already get picked?
Low to mid 30’s I think.
grover - June 9, 2009
Yes, he did.
Yeah, leaving for a while really messes things up.
Zona got him.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Texas gets lucky again
Purke was a top 10 talent with signability concerns. Scheppers was a top 10 talent with an injury history that appears to be in the past, and also a big price tag. If they get them both signed, then their minor league pitching just got a whole lot better, and it was already pretty damn good.
NateHST - June 9, 2009
Something tells me they don't both sign
If I’m right, Hicks was trying to cut payroll or something?
Although more power to them if they can sign both.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
not to mention Mendonca in the second round
dtownmbrown - June 9, 2009
This is my first time watching the draft
Have teams always announced their picks on the podium like they’re doing now?
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
Where's the game thread?
Just curious, not demanding or anything.
paradox - June 9, 2009
There's a game being played?
What is this, baseball?
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
Max Stassi and Wil Myers
If one falls to the A’s, do you guys think they would make good picks at 92?
Blicks - June 9, 2009
I just noticed
Mendonca was picked by Texas.
Sad.
Morgasm - June 9, 2009
Yeah, Stock is gone too to the Cards.
NateHST - June 9, 2009
Ugh...
Blicks - June 9, 2009
If it makes you feel any better
Andy Seiler hates the Mendonca pick
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Mendonca was a stud for Fresno State
He does strike out a lot, and doesn’t hit lefties well, but his glove is well above average. He has tons of power, and was an exceptional leader for the team.
Andy must not of watched any of the 08 CWS, as Mendonca was a walking highlight reel at third.
pickinmachine - June 9, 2009
power hitter from fresno state who strikes out too much? did we draft this guy a few years ago?
xbhaskarx - June 10, 2009
Hmm, so who is left now?
There are some good prep catchers in Will Myers, Max Stassi, and Luke Bailey. Slugging Louisville third baseman Chris Dominguez.
I don’t know much about the arms that are still available, anyone interesting?
OkayJay81 - June 9, 2009
Whoops
Scratch Dominguez, Giants just nabbed him.
OkayJay81 - June 9, 2009
I'm rooting for Stassi
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Yay Yuba City
DyeLongJustice - June 9, 2009
Royals get Myers
Great pick by them.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
A's pick Justin Marks- Louisville
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Who>?
Morgasm - June 9, 2009
Justin Marks
Here’s a video.
2007: 9-2, 2.67 ERA, 104.2 IP, 71 H, 38 R, 31 ER, 7 HR, 38 BB, 87 K
2008. 9-2, 2.37 ERA, 91.0 IP, 72 H, 36 R, 24 ER, 3 HR, 39 BB, 89 K
2009: 11-3, 3.77 ERA, 105.0 IP, 86 H, 51 R, 44 ER, 5 HR, 35 BB, 129 K
All I know is that according that video, his fastball sits in the high 80s.
NateHST - June 9, 2009
A's take Max Stassi with pick #123
