Fuck! Matzek!
Rockies are this years Rangers
they're the Cockies from now on for that one.
But Matty...
How about the Cock Blockies?
Haha. I like it.
Geren is back…in full uniform this time.
Noooo get him out of there.
WE NEED MOJO GUYZ!!!!!!

Where’s gigglingone?

if she made a cupcake for Draft Mojo....that's effing awesome.
I'd really enjoy a TWSS cupcake, actually.
I'm totally making one of those for you next time...
sorry, no draft mojo cupcake... :(
I'm a Jaguars fan

I can see if Mojo will make us a cupcake

I'm ducking in and out of the draft thread

too much work to do today. :(

http://twitpic.com/708j0 – If you were the first column of The Board, this would be your view…
why do i keep hearing about miller?

who is he, and why would we take him with crow or green on the board?

he's 3rd on board right now

RHP

I love this site

freakin 500 comments during a DRAFT. I love it.

ZOMBIE DRAFT PICK
we going for green for sure
Watch out for Tim Wheeler

Unfortunately

I choose you, Pikachu!
Let's face it, the A's probably wouldn't have taken Matzek anyways
I think they will take a commercial on ours.

damn it!

The Rockies select Tyler Matzek, one of the top two lefty HS pitchers on the board. We had been down to SoCal extensively to scout him.
I bet Royals take Crow
Surprised Rockies weren't scared away by Matzek's $ demand

kudos to them though it sucks for us

They're rock hard

stubborn

I see what you did there
Todd Steverson and Curt Young just walked in to check out the happenings.
Here is whats left of my board

Tanner Scheppers
Aaron Crow
Tim Wheeler
Bobby Borchering
Grant Green
Alex White
Matt Purke
Chad James
Shelby Miller
 Wil Myers

Well

The next few picks won’t be as fun.

Oh yeah, I forgot Purke!

I like Purke almost as much as Matzek! Gimme Purke, Crow, Green.

here we go....KC
Scheppers or Crow, plz
royals take

Crow

Royals steal Crow!
at #12, KC takes Crowe
#@(&!*()#*(U!@*(#!@#
Green to A's with #13
A'S NOW ON THE CLOCK!
royals take crow
I knew it!

damn commercial

OK-- Miller or Green

I say Miller

ok well

grant green, anybody?

Green, Purke, Miller, Wheeler, White

Guarantee it’s one of these, but I’m hoping it’s Green or Purke.

Nice, MLB Network with the live feed in A's draft room.
Billy

He looks happy…

he was laughing

and bob looked ridiculous in his uni

they dont want to talk about the A's
Royals are gonna (eat) Crow...lol
Tastes like chicken
Crossing my fingers for Scheppers.
LET'S GO PURKE.
With my pick,

I select the MGD

Purke is a better talent than Green IMHO
Billy justed shhh-ed everyone before that last pick…and we’re up!
A's will take Green
Can we take the gold instead?
PLEASE BE SCHEPPERS
scheppers or green?
Scheppers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Green or Scheppers!
Hopefully Green or Wheeler
Wheeler's gone, dude
He means Tim

Please not Tim Wheeler

Saw that dude polay a lot done here

He can mash, run and doesn’t strike out a lot. I want a left side player but he would be a good pick if he slides in the second

forgot the A's don't have a second round pick
Green, Scheppers, Wheeler?

oh man. This stinks

The Royals select Aaron Crow, an unsigned pick from last year who’s been pitching in independent ball. We’re now on the clock.
I hope Green

but I feel Miller

green

we have enough pitching

Yeah, Scheppers is fine too

Nasty stuff

I hear some stuff about shoulder problems

anybody know about this.

It was last year.
That's why he slipped and didn't sign last year.
So much better than NFL

4 min rather than the 15 or so we have to wait.

The A's seem to be the only team that really open themselves up to the draft.

The Twitter posts are all over the mlb.com page and they have a camera in the draft room.

They're leaking battle plans
100% Open Source Baseball
W/ our pick up, 5 players in our top 13 are still on the board..just showing that there’s a lot of difference of opinion in this yrs draft
Baseball Ops is on the phone with the A’s Rep in NY…the pick is being called in.
Sounds like we need the president's authorization
They are showing Trout

Could be him?

Crow gone

On the clock – do we take Green? Also Scheppers, Purke, White, Miller. So many choices

@OaklandAs C’mon A’s, break your pick on #MLBDraft Twitter. Revolutionary. Goodbye Money Ball, hello Twitter Ball!
Forgot about Trout!

He has HUGE upside

forgot about dre?
i love that song
thirty seconds
My feed is behind then.
beep beep beep beep

[24 cutscene]

I know Scheppers manager....Says good things about him.
and the choice is

green

GREEN!!!!!!!

Woot!

YEAH GO GREEN!

In 2 ways!

wow greene is ours
At #13, OAKLAND ATHLETICS pick GRANT GREEN, SS!
Greenie to A's!
Green it is!

“Oakland” pronounced normally.

“Los Angeles” not so much.

Nice...Pac 10!
"Los Angeleeees?"
I like the pick
GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FIRE GREEN NOW! .............j/k
FIRE GREEN NOW!!!
aww, you beat me to it.
and i beat him to it!
Massive Beatings.
WOOOOOOOO!

Matzek would have been nice. Still love me some Green though.

I'm all for it

another Trojan in Oakland. Let’s do it!

move forward with the future

redundant phrase is redundant

I love GREEN

and gold.

Jemile Weeks this isn't!!
Wait, do we need a SS?
Billy and team are all smiles. Everyone gets up to congratulate the scout who found Green.
"Now, let's not start sucking each other's d***s just yet."
I hope that scout is a good judge of talent

from what I’ve seen the numbers just aren’t there statswise

The gut had an OPS over 1.000

What more are you looking from in the numbers department?

walks and home runs

? Has there been one guy in the last ten years with that low a walk rate in college who turned out to be good?

1) How would I even research the answer to that question?

2) I assume that the A’s have the resources and incentive to do so.

But that’s an interesting question.

lol

you can’t, but the guys at Project Prospect couldn’t find anybody within their database. Whatever, I’m not going to complain. His statistical line isn’t there, but he’s got obvious talent.

Tulowitzki

See my link near the bottom

I'm a bit late to reply, but I've been reading Project Prospect

and they have been low on him. BP seems to like him too. I haven’t seen their analysis of Green, so hopefully I’m just dead wrong

Coleman to 3B?
God

Now, let’s see who we get at 93.

is that really when we pick next?!
Yes.

2nd rounder to ChiSox for OCab.

O-Cab signing, IIRC
So that's only six hours away?
Round 2 you only get 1 min...it will go fast
OH MY GOD!

GRANT GREEN IS A BASEBALL PLAYER!

DO NOT COMPARE GREEN TO CROSBY, MLB GUYS!!!
I just went like this

Like whaaa?
Now the pic loads. GDit.
"I like this guy, he's a baseball player"

I heart mlb.com live

NOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo they just compared him to Bobby Crosby

They just compared him to Bobby Crosby. Solid!
Yessssssssssssss
The MLB Network commentators

Lost any credibility with that statement.

Why? It isn't a terrible comp.
Sure, it's a fair comparison

If you’re talking about projection. But if they’re looking at his future as a Bobby Crosby circa 2007-now, they’re out of their minds, and is probably the worst comparison I’ve ever heard.

You can't assume they're doing that

They’re talking about how he’s perceived AT THE TIME THEY WERE DRAFTED.

Crosby was percieved as a good pick

and was even picked to be MVP once by the venerable Peter Gammons

That is the worst thing I’ve heard in my entire life.

OH FUCK

GRANT GREEN COMPARED TO BOBBY CROSBY!

oh god

THEY COMPARED HIM TO BOCRO
RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

"Compared to bobby crosby" MLB network

Fuck no.

So, how is Green on hitting the low outside slider?
The room is watching MLB’s post-selection coverage.
It's cool, I didn't want the starting pitcher who throws 98.
I don't like this pick.

but it could have been worse i guess.

Eh

With Leake and Crow off the board, he made more sense than Scheppers. Sorry, once a guy’s shoulder starts to go wonky I lose interest.

I liked Purke a little more than Green
Purke wants a ton of money

and his delivery is all sorts of trouble waiting to happen. Probably rather have green.

+1

Do the A’s really need to spend more top-level money on pitching prospects with injury histories?

YES

From Andy Seiler’s draft chat

Andy Seiler: Grant Green to the A’s. One correct point for me.
Andy Seiler: I’ve got to turn off the impartial button and say PICK TANNER SCHEPPERS!

Im ok with the injury history. If his medicals don’t work out don’t sign him.

If he want Scheppers with the 14th pick, he has to be happy with him at 44
I get that but the dude throws 98 as a starter

he doesn’t have that much leverage. If his medical reports aren’t clean don’t sign him. Hoping he falls to the third… It can happen right?

3rd round pick... whole other story

I’d like the A’s leverage in that situation.

I would do back flips over shards of glass and/or a tank of sharks if that happens.
Tehas on the Clock
FUCKING MLB NETWORK GUYS.

RUINED EVERYTHING

So based on comments I saw on the earlier thread,

I’m thinking the consensus of the community is pleased by this. So I won’t have to hear about it for the next year how “if only we picked Wallace [so-and-so] instead” or “if only we lost two more games and were able to take Smoak [so-and-so]”. Right?

OK, back to work now.

I'm content.
probaby not

it’s us afterall

But will the Rangers fans be saying,

“If only we lost two more games, Oakland wouldn’t have stolen Grant Green out from under us”?

well they got purke

they can’t be too unhappy

My prediction

The equivalent of the “if we’d only lost to Texas on the last day of the season” thing will be “If we’d only not signed O-Cab” and then talking about all the guys we could have picked with the 2nd-rounder that went to Chicago.

maybe o-cab will outperform all 60 guys taken before the next a's pick
I quite like this pick
Green and Crosby

Kiss of death

I think the J. J. Hardy comp was a better one
J.J. plays amazing D, Green plays solid d.

J.J. will hit better. Not a good comp.

I dont think JJ plays "amazing" d

but other than that….yeah not really comparable

I hate this pick

Because glove picks where primary question is the bat generally don’t work out well. Just hasty generalization there.

He hit with wood in the Cape Cod League

And tore it up

Yeah true.
from Kevin Goldstein
Oakland takes Grant Green. No surprise here at all, and a nice break for them. Last year, they hoped and prayed that Smoak would drop to them and just missed out, this year Green was the guy they hoped would fall, and he did. I think Oakland got away with a truckload here. Green is a better player than half the guys selected ahead of him.

BP Draft chat

I don't know who Goldstein is, but I like him.
he's the main prospect guy at Baseball Prospectus

he knows a thing or two about a thing or two

Im glad hes hire on him that I am.
maybe you should hire him as your scout
Spencer for Hire.
as long as he's drinking that root beer

what’s it called again?

I think the correct joke here is that I should hire him to proof my comments. :-P
You never draft for need, but when the top guy on the board also fills a need, thats the best-case scenario, and hopefully the case w/ Green
I just hope

he wasn’t on the top of the board BECAUSE he filled a need, and that they actually had him on the top of the board because he was the top talent they wanted/could afford.

Rangers got purke
At #14, Rangers take Matt Purke
Haha, they're trying to give Green the Crosby curse
Don't think he'll fall for the low and away slider they're throwing
A lot more movement in the room now. Scouts re-visiting the spread. The mood is light and excited.
FUCK YOU, TEXAS

I WANTED PURKE FOR THE A’S

haha

they stole the pick after us!

Can I join the shouting?
Just wanted to say

I called it

Trying to stay positive

Tulowiski was compared to crosby too

And now he's playing like him!

And how is Tulo doing now?

Smash bat hurt hand.

Do not want.

you're ruining my positivity vibes
Focus Area Comments
Hitting ability: Green got off to a slow start in 2009 and was striking out more than usual. He was chasing pitches and getting himself out. He’s started to come around though, hitting balls in the gap with his inside-out swing.
Power: He does have it — he’s capable of turning on an inside pitch and driving it — but he has more of a line-drive stroke that shoots balls in the right and left-center field gaps. He could be a 15-20 homer guy down the road.
Running speed: When he’s going full-tilt, he’s got solid-average to plus speed and can really get down the line.
Base running: He is a little bit low energy at times, but does turn it up when he wants to.
Arm strength: He’s got a solid-average to plus arm which is very accurate.
Fielding: Has good glove action, though like with his hitting, he struggled early, making uncharacteristic errors.
Range: He’s a little better to his right than up the middle, making the play in the hole better than the one to his glove side. But he’s capable of making all the plays.
Physical Description: Green is lean and wiry with an athletic frame and strong wrists. He has some room to get stronger as he matures.
Medical Update: An ankle injury on the Sunday of the series with UCLA forced him to miss a Tuesday doubleheader, but he was back at short the following weekend.
Strengths: He has five-tool potential at a premium position. He’s capable of hitting for average and a little power while playing a fine shortstop.
Weaknesses: He can be a little low energy and has frustrated some at times with a perceived lack of effort.
Summary: Premier college shortstops don’t come around all that often and when they do, they get drafted early. That should be the case for Green, who has the potential to shine on both sides of the ball with all five tools. He shook off some early struggles to perform up to expectations, though his lack of energy at times has bothered scouts. Even with that, he’s a confident and accomplished college player who shouldn’t wait long to hear his name called.
sounds like a DL regular
He'll fit in just fine here.
Hopefully the rumors of a wrist injury that sapped his power were true.
Lack of effort.

Good fucking job.

Sounds like Jeter.
This needs to be green
Ooh, are we playing charades now?
Sounds like crosby
I like the pick.
at 15, Indians take Alex White
Indinans pick white
From Fangraphs's live blog.
#13. Oakland – Grant Green, SS

The A’s take the star of the Cape Cod League last year, ignoring his mediocre junior year who can be an up the middle player with a solid bat. Interesting to see how much Boras gets from the A’s, who aren’t big spenders.
Aren't big spenders?

Ynoa says hi.

and the A's have money for a change
I'd like to get change for this ten, please.
well not that much....
Anyone got any numbers on Green this year?
I want the Cape Cod stats
OK

.348 BA, .547 SLG
.451 OBP, 56 H, 37 R

Not sure on ABs.

Looks like 161 AB

I will take that ANY day. Impressive numbers.

with a wood bat
Mmmmm.

0.998 OPS? I’ll take it.

Also

10/13 in the SB department.

USC numbers

Year G-GS AVG AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB-SBA BB SO
2007 (Fr.) 56-56 .316 228 42 72 14 10 2 24 6-10 25 51
2008 (So.) 50-50 .390 205 46 80 15 5 9 46 10-14 15 35
2009 (Jr.) 54-54 .374 211 46 79 19 5 4 32 16-24 20 38
Totals 160-160 .359 644 134 231 48 20 15 102 32-48 60 124

The Rangers select Purke, the other top prep lefty along with Matzek. Our scouts saw his upside as a potential Cole Hamels.
Potential Cole Hamels?

I can see why we passed.

yeah

we wanted Bobby Pennington

I still like the Green pick

Reading up on his CCL last year. Impressive stuff.

Just wait till Nolan "I don't believe in pitch counts" Ryan gets his hands on him.
He would have been my first choice

but the A’s were not really linked with him and it is not like they went cheap with Green

And they didn't freaking pick him?

Major disconnect?

His delivery is all fed up

needs a total teardown/ rebuild

The Indians take Alex White, RHP from NC who boosted his stock w/ an outstanding final outing in the regional. 92-96 w/ a split-finger FB
I'm surprised we didn't go for White
It works for the shoes, but our main color is still Green.
When's our next pick?
93, I think

3rd round, thanks to 2nd rounder going to OCab.

3rd round
Grant Green

Here’s a gigantic review

Quote from this link

Jim Callis prefers Grant Green to Tim Beckham, last year’s #1 overall pick.

Sounds like fun!
From Baseball Beginnings also from that link

http://baseballbeginnings.com/2009/04/14/grant-green-report/

Scouts grades: (20 to 80, present/future)

Hit 40/65
Power 40/55
Run 50/50
Arm 45/50
Field 40/50

Add one OFP point for athleticism, instincts and work ethic.

Overall Future Potential: 55
That's a damn good shortstop

65 hitting? That’s over .300. I’ll take a .300 hitting SS with 17 bombs ANY day.

Can he play 3B?
If his bat is for real but he's found lacking at SS you'd think that'd be an option.
Sounds like his two main problems are:

contact and maturity. The first is probably going to make or break him, the second he’ll probably outgrow as he rises through the ranks.

Some good reading.

Green has very good range and a good arm and should stay at SS for many years to come, but he’ll need to do better than the subpar 17 errors in 41 games this summer. However, in my brief chat with his Cape Cod (Chatham A’s) manager, John Schiffner, I was told that the grounds are rough and that Green was getting to a lot of balls that most SS’s couldn’t. Schiffner compares Green to Evan Longoria, whom he also managed, and loves the kid. A move to third down the road is not out of the question, as he adds weight and loses range. Green has good power potential and a good eye at the plate, and a big help to his accolades rest in his stellar performance in the wood bat Cape this past summer, where he hit .348, with 6 HR’s, 21 RBI, went 10/13 in SB’s, walked 28 times, struck out 38, and had a line of .348/.451/.547/.998, all in 161 AB’s.

From Here

"Move to 3rd not out of the question"

We should just remember the basic advice on picking SS, CF, and C as much as possible — if they aren’t quite up to par defensively, they can still contribute at 3B or RF. Pick a 3B who’s not that good and you’ve got another 1B or DH.

And, in the A’s case, a 3B would be fine, too.

Well…with the next pic not until the 90’s, there’s a relaxed atosphere in here…for now.
Not a good thing.
Yeah, but O-Cab wasn't all that expensive

so they still should have $$ left over for an overslot signing like Dixon or Hunter at 3 or below.

Yeah, I can't wait.
With no trades there's not much they can do.
Bud doesn't know where Notre Dame is?!?
He got it right

There is a Notre Dame, IN

Paris? ;-)
I was thinking South Bend

One way or another, it’s a pit.

With the 1st of 2 successive picks, the DBacks take switch-hitting HS Bobby Borchering, who has some of the best raw power in the draft.
Also, he's got a lust for life
He has a tendency to Search and Destroy ground balls hit to the left side.

stretch?

Chairman of the Borchering?

or is that a stretch

good plate discipline

kids got a TV eye.

The Dbacks select AJ Pollock, a CF from Notre Dame. One of several toolsy college outfielders expected to go in the next 20 or so picks.
For those mad about Purke.

Andy Seiler: I think this is a mistake, depending on how much he signs for. This will hamstring the Rangers in their other picks, and I hate his delivery. This will take some work, but I know the Rangers have a long-term development program. But this seems strange to me.

Hmm...yeah, that's a good point

I waver too much with the draft.

It’s sooo HUGE though

i have a random question

i was looking at green’s stats…what does slugging % consist of?

Instead of average where they count all hits equally,

A single is 1, a double is 2, triple is 3, and HR is 4. All added up, divided by at bats just like average.

Hitting bases/out made at the plate

So a single = 1, a double 2, etc. And a GIDP= 2 outs.

If a guy goes 1/4 with a HR and no GIDPs, he slugged 1.000 that game (4 bases/4 outs).

For what it's worth,

I keep reading a comp for Grant Green as sort of a Tulowitski/Longoria hybrid. Consider me excited.

or

BroCro

My hands are covering my ears.

La la la la la la la la la la!

I don't see the problem with Bobby Crosby comparisons

If you all remember, Crosby was turning into a very good shortstop before he started getting hurt every year. He also never gained the ability to stop swinging at the outside slider. If Green can become what Crosby was projected to be, we got a GREAT pick.

I'm sorry.

I seemed to have misheard that. Did you say notBoCro?

I do believe

He did not, in fact, say BoCro

It's hard to be upset about the Green pick

1. He’s by far the best draft-eligible MI
2. He’s affordable
3. No one knows if we’d have even drafted Matzek or Crow if they’d fallen
4. Who else was there? If Matzek or Crow wanted too much money (maybe Purke too), who’s left? Shelby Miller? I prefer Green anyway.

I dont think anyones that upset with the pick

mainly because we just lost out on Matzek and Crowe. Its like last year, but a Double Whammy.

Would we have even drafted them though?

We KNOW we’d have drafted Smoak. We don’t know that we’d have even picked Matzek or Crow.

Scheppers was left.

I want him.

Almost every single team passed on Scheppers at least once

The shoulder injury must have been a bigger concern than it was first believed.

apparently it was his bonus demands.
WooHoo....Okie talent!
How quickly does the picks go in the 2nd & 3rd rounds?
Hopefully faster

I want to see us take Stock at 92

Well, I'm kinda hoping the A's brain trust is taking stock now so that they know what they're doing when their pick comes around
Hey man

I’m all for it…two Trojans! Let’s do it.

playing it safe, are you?
I prefer Bonds or deriviatives to Stock
I am not familiar with Derivatives' career numbers, but I heard Bonds did okay
90 seconds? Something quick like that
Thank God

This 4 mins shit has gotta go. It’s just the baseball draft. It’s not like the NFL or NBA where it’s this big orchestrated pile of bullshit. (I say that as I’ll be dead in tuned for all 5 hours of the NBA draft on the 25th.)

The only legit justification in the NFL is the possibility of trades

Since you can’t trade picks in MLB, the wait is pretty useless.

Yeah that's true with the NBA too

That 5 mins is important so they can blah blah blah and blather about how stupid the pick from bumfuck nowhere was.

But, the NBA has always done the draft that way. Why does the MLB need to start now? Hardly anybody is there anyway? That’s not how the MLB draft works.

Well, the NBA has only 2 rounds

so if they had a minute per pick it would barely last an hour!

Yeah Nick

But not only that, they have at least 15-20 guys in the green room invited there. Who is there at that draft?

I mean who is at the MLB draft?

This is just so stupid. I understand changing things. But, this makes little sense. Most of these guys are still playing!

And Bud Selig sounds like a drunken horse

He’s a terrible choice to don the podium.

Green quote from Goldstein

I don’t know if this has been posted yet but coll quote…Kevin Goldstein (4:17:13 PM PT): Oakland takes Grant Green. No surprise here at all, and a nice break for them. Last year, they hoped and prayed that Smoak would drop to them and just missed out, this year Green was the guy they hoped would fall, and he did. I think Oakland got away with a truckload here. Green is a better player than half the guys selected ahead of him.

He's a baseball player
Does he come to the park to compete?
So what happens with Coleman?

Has this been covered and I missed it?

Nothing yet

Let them both play SS for now. Why make a move right now when we don’t have to?

move him up to Stockton, put Green at Kane County?
What happens with Leyja now?
2B hopefully
Hopefully Leyja is a good SS too.

You really can’t have too many good players.

But I meant, where are these guys all going to play?

Hopefully, Green will outgrow rookie ball sooner rather than later.

Again it's a good problem to have.

I’d imagine Green takes priority though – 3 years older than Leyja and signed for much more money.

Yeah, they just need to make sure each guy gets the playing time he needs to develop
Green

Doubt Green will start in Rookie Ball – he is a pretty advanced college hitter – my guess is he’ll start in Stockton or maybe Kane County.

Why? Is he not going to work out at SS?

I mean, it’s not like the A’s are lacking in 2B prospects right now.

Leyja

Leyja likely goes to play SS at Vancouver

Maybe Green starts at Vancouver?

I’d like to see what you said, though.

another ANer mentioned a possible move to 3B
If your name is Grant Green, this is what you should look like

It would be cool to have a jazz guitar playing SS/3B.

Who knows, maybe our Green is a hepcat, too
Maybe someone could introduce him to Bernie Williams
Love me some Grant Green
That's who I thought of when I first heard of Grant Green-good guitarist!
There is also a Blues bar in SF called Grant and Green

on the corner of…

Grant and Green

http://www.yelp.com/biz/grant-and-green-saloon-san-francisco

I apologize if this was posted above but assuming all goes well how soon till we see Green up with the big club?
2 years i guess?

how old is he?

He's a college hitter, so I'd say 2-4 years before his first cup of coffee.

Assuming no significant injury delays or anything.

Of course, if the Giants drafted him, about 3 months.

Non-miraculous best case would be some time in 2011, I'd think

Signs quickly, advances to high-A and does well everywhere. Plays Winter Ball, starts 2010 at AA, promoted to AAA, keeps succeeding.

I suppose September of 2010 would be possible, but that’s getting even further into ponyland.

I always wanted a Pony!
Scheppers to Toronto
Two HS pitchers go w/ the next 2 picks, Chad James to the Marlins & Shelby Miller to the Cardinals. We saw Miller throw up to 96 last week.
The Blue Jays select Chad Jenkins, a college righty that our scouts have compared to former Oakland A Aaron Harang
Uhoh. Bad news.

From an interview on Baseball Beginnings.

BB: You mentioned you grew up a Giants fan even though you were in Angel country?

Green: [My Dad’s] first memories were of the Giants and going to Candlestick Park with my grandfather and freezing his butt off. When I was young, I was always on the Giants and he was one of my coaches. I heard all the stories about him absolutely loving the Giants.
Better than a slegnA or sregnaR or sreniraM fan.
I still like calling them the San Clemente Angels of Laguna Niguel. Best name hands down!
do you live around here (I'm in Dana Point)

quite a regional reference, just curious..

Hah, sregnaR.

Sounds like slegnA’s evil alien brother.

Oh

Sregnar
Slegna

We'll have to break him of this nasty habit.
Rumors in Philly had Trout going to the A's or the slegnA

I wonder if they’re going to get him.

The team with the best scented PowerBait is most likely to get him.
Trout is asking for $2.5 mil

I wonder if any of these other potential first-rounders could possibly fall to 92?

Jiovanni Mier -> Astros

Sounds Ed Wade-ish to me.

The Astros select Jiovanni Mier, a HSer from SoCal that we had rated the 2nd best SS in the draft after Green.
Little hunch: Scheppers falls to 49
Nice pick for Minnesota

Injury risk, who cares?

From Slusser:

Pettit back to AAA Denorfia up.

is Crosby back then?
they should have just DLed Cunningham

just to be safe.

They will

11 days from now

+1

Don’t mess with concussions.

+ infinity
They will

after 2 weeks when they realize “WE SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS 2 WEEKS AGO”

Cust still needs to play RF

with Barton at 1B, Giambino at DH.

The Twins take Kyle Gibson, a consensus top-10 talent before he lost velocity late in the year & was diagnosed w/ a forearm stress fracture
I like this pick for the Twins.
If the Twins are confident that Gibson can recover from his injury, it’s a very good value in this portion of the draft.
ChiSox get Jared Mitchell
Kyle Gibson thanked God

What were the odds?

Gibson is an Evangelical
Did gibson just say his tommy John was hurt?

or did i mishear that

Is that what kids are calling it these days?
He said something about his Tommy John bone

I don’t think you misheard him.

He said that's what people were (incorrectly) saying.

That’s why they were very public about the exact nature of his injury. That’s what he was saying, I believe.

Let's hope the next two picks are colossal busts.
Well, actually 24, 25, 27, and 28 need to be busts
Slegnas up...
Slegnas pick Randall Grichuk
Grichuk sounds like a goblin name
Lol'd thoroughly.
LOL I HEARD BOOS!
YES!!!
hahahah

I didn’t even hear this guy being discussed in the Top 30, let alone the Supp.

They weren't booing Bud for saying "Lamar Cons" for "Lamar Consolidated"?
Gamer... Grinder... Winning Player...

David Eckstien jr.?

Sabean likes that.
White Sox take Jared Mitchell, CF from LSU — one of the best athletes in the draft (played WR for the fb team). A guy we had ranked highly.
Slegnas pick again, Mike Trout
Feck. Thats a good pick
Really? I mean its good value but im not that high on him as a player.

Why do you think so?

I wouldn't say its an amazing pick, but I'm just saying

its good value for the round. That’s pretty much it.

Much better than them picking Scheppers though, as he continues his free fall.

please fall to us please fall to us.
Angels pick Trout
I officially hate Trout
when do A's

pick again?

92
today or tommorow
Today

First 3 rounds are today

How long until the Tim Salmon jokes start coming?
Angels like fish
They flounder like them.
are people going to start carping on about this?

he is the number 25 pike, afterall

Trout's not a college product.

He probably won’t be swimming upstream too soon.

If there's a player out there named Delta Smelt....
Or Randy Bass
Angels should trade for Brian Bass

Brandon Wood for Brian Bass

Here we go:

“Angels hope that Trout will not flounder and follow in the wake of Salmon.”

qotm? yes, i think so.
from my brother:

“Here’s hoping he’s a brown trout that poops out.”

Our division rival Angels take 2 HS OFs — Randal Grichuk & Mike Trout. Trout is in the MLB Network studio…he was in the mix for us at 13.
So who should we be looking at with number 92?

Besides Stock that is…

Sure, you could make a nice Stock with Trout and a few Leakes
That deserves some kind of award.
From earlier

Scheppers if hes there (please god i don’t believe in you but make this happen)

Names to think about in the 3rd round

I <3 Tommy Mendonca, who would not only fit a need but would be a great value pick. He K’s way too much but his defense is really really fantastic. Andy Seiler says there is only about a 20-30% chance of him lasting to us :’-(

Kendal Voz – starter/reliever from Baylor might be a great value if you can keep him in the starting rotation. Has a nasty slider and in the pen got up to 97 as a closer for Team USA, though as a starter hes more in the 89-92 range. He also has a change which gets the 10 mph differential. While some may think that being mostly a reliever presents added risk there is also probably less mileage on his arm than 3 year starters. Could be a sleeper in the third.

Josh Pleghy has a good bat for a C, thought there are some concerns about his power translating to wood, but the real question is his ability to stay behind the plate. He has some problems with pitchers with a lot of movement (he will never catch Tim Wakefield) and has stone hands. His arm is average with good strength but sometimes he rushes and it affects his accuracy. Might be a good risk in the third.

Luke Baily was a first round talent as a high school Catcher with few questions about his ability to stay there and some raw power projection. He blew out his arm and needed TJ surgery in May. Could be a good value if you want to rehab him.

Colton Cain is a prep lefty from Tx who throws a heavy sinking 94 mph fastball. His other pitches curve and change up are inconsistent but his change up shows potential and some think that his motion would adopt a hard slider well. Definitely a project.

Nice pick for the Brew Crew
Who'd they pick?

feed is being annoying

Eric Arnett

Pitcher, Indiana University.

Aah, thanks
Our scouts believed Trout was one of the best makeup guys in the draft, & you can see why watching him being interviewed on TV. Great kid.
I hate him

Appears the MLB network is going to fawn all over him for his entire career now.

It's cause he's actually in the studio, and the reporters are bored
And Baaaahstin and NYY haven't picked yet
I wonder if "good makeup" is 2009's version of the Good Face

Is there any evidence that friendly, personable draft picks who know how to showcase their work ethic (which is what I’m assuming “good makeup” means) ultimately turn out better in the major leagues than their owly, surly, shy, tongue-tied, or socially inept colleagues?

The Brewers select Eric Arnett, a college righty w/ a good pitcher’s body & plus stuff. They were rumored to have interest in Trout.
The next 3 picks need to be busts.

Plz?

Let's hope THIRD TIME IS A CHARM

regarding our first round SS picks.

BoCro: bust
Pennington: bust
Green: ????

...bas relief?
you forgot Quintinilla
M's get Nick Franklin

HS SS

Does Boston take Scheppers?

Either them or NY, right?

Who are the big signablilty questions with talent left on the board?
Scheppers is the big one.
Baahstin takes Reymond Fuentes
Red Sox select Raymond Fuentes, a HS CF out of Puerto Rico. Fuentes was a late-riser on draft boards & has been compared to Carlos Beltran
hes his cousin i hear
Yankees select Slade Heathcott
Wasn't he one of the guys chasing Scarlett O'Hara around at the beginning of GWTW?
Brent Tarleton

I was thinking it sounded like a yuppie porn name.

1st round concludes w/ the Yanks and Rays taking a couple of toolsy HS CFers, Zach Heathcott & Levon Washington.
Washington could play 2B

Two more picks, also..

I don't like the Levon pick for the Rays.

I just don’t think he was even close to BPA there.

Cubs take Brett Jackson

CAL!

Our next pick at 92 is still a ways away…too early to hone in on the candidates, but there are still a few guys in our top 30 available
Scheppers!

Some other guys I think are interesting…

Tim Wheeler
Max Stassi
Rex Brothers
James Paxton
Everett Williams
Kyle Heckathorn
Tommy Joseph
Andy Oliver
Garrett Gould

Still a LOT of talent left.

Damn, I knew it. There goes Wheeler.

Ah well.

Mmhmm. Lots to choose one.

Although I bet most of those guys are gone in the comp and 2nd rounds.

Agreed, but they're still there for now

All it takes it one to fall.

The Cubs select Brett Jackson, a CF at Cal who we got to see a lot just down the street at Cal. One of the better athletes in the draft.
I've met the guy before.

He’s one of the cockiest SOBs I’ve ever encountered. Granted he and I were both drunk, but nevertheless, what an asshole. I did some research on the fellow after the encounter. A real class act. Also, I talked to one of his ex-classmates in HS. For what it’s worth, my “source” told me in junior year he was standing at 5’7" 140, and strongly suspected that Jackson was on some type of illegal supplement. Whatever, the Cubs deserve him.

Oh, and for those wondering, no Jackson did not come in and snake my girl at the party, but I could see why one would think that. He really just was that big of an jerk.

You're correct

He’s a complete douchebag. I went to the same HS as him and I was on JV when he was a senior. He always had raw talent but never seemed to fully tap into it. Kinda surreal to see someone I know getting taken in the 1st round though…

Went to high school with the guy,

He can come off a little cocky but for the most part he’s a really good guy. Always treated everyone with respect, and probably the hardest worker I’ve ever met. Also, his junior year he was proably as tall as he is now, just not as bulky. From what I hear, he is constantly in the weight room.

I’ve got to hand it to the guy, I always doubted his ability and he continues to prove me wrong. Congratulations, Brett.

why do so many people knwo this guy??
Because hes related to Kevin Bacon?
hahahahah

Yeah, I went to highschool with him. He was a decent person, but yes cocky and dumb as rocks. Not a bad guy though. On the PED thing, his neck is like three times as big as it was 3 years ago. But people can change naturally, so I can’t judge, but honestly that was the first thing to pop into my mind when I saw him last.

what is the timing in between the picks for the upcoming rounds?
any one else having the feed completly fucking up?
yes, I gave up a while ago
Listening to the draft on the MLB.com audio coverage

no probs with that.

Scheppers to Texas
Oh gawd.

Not cool.

It's very annoying that we have so few picks.
+2
500 comments for one pick.

Crazy.

When Grant Green is our WARlord this will all be worth it.
Another CAL Bear.
Rex Brothers is falling.
Brothers went to the Rockies at the beginning of the comp. round
Sorry. Missed that. Thanks for pointing out.

I left for a while and my feed is fucking up. Following Sellers’ chat to get updates.
