from what I’ve seen the numbers just aren’t there statswise
gojohn10 - June 9, 2009
The gut had an OPS over 1.000
What more are you looking from in the numbers department?
grover - June 9, 2009
walks and home runs
? Has there been one guy in the last ten years with that low a walk rate in college who turned out to be good?
AgitationStation - June 9, 2009
1) How would I even research the answer to that question?
2) I assume that the A’s have the resources and incentive to do so.
But that’s an interesting question.
Nick - June 9, 2009
lol
you can’t, but the guys at Project Prospect couldn’t find anybody within their database. Whatever, I’m not going to complain. His statistical line isn’t there, but he’s got obvious talent.
AgitationStation - June 9, 2009
Tulowitzki
See my link near the bottom
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
I'm a bit late to reply, but I've been reading Project Prospect

They just compared him to Bobby Crosby. Solid!
Pucking Insane - June 9, 2009
Yessssssssssssss
chipper1001 - June 9, 2009
The MLB Network commentators
Lost any credibility with that statement.
MrMoneyBaller - June 9, 2009
Why? It isn't a terrible comp.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
Sure, it's a fair comparison
If you’re talking about projection. But if they’re looking at his future as a Bobby Crosby circa 2007-now, they’re out of their minds, and is probably the worst comparison I’ve ever heard.
MrMoneyBaller - June 9, 2009
You can't assume they're doing that
They’re talking about how he’s perceived AT THE TIME THEY WERE DRAFTED.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Crosby was percieved as a good pick
and was even picked to be MVP once by the venerable Peter Gammons
kbtoyz - June 9, 2009
That is the worst thing I’ve heard in my entire life.
walkoff baltimore chop - June 9, 2009

ElQuesoCapitan - June 9, 2009

but it could have been worse i guess.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
Eh
With Leake and Crow off the board, he made more sense than Scheppers. Sorry, once a guy’s shoulder starts to go wonky I lose interest.
grover - June 9, 2009
I liked Purke a little more than Green
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Purke wants a ton of money
and his delivery is all sorts of trouble waiting to happen. Probably rather have green.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
+1
Do the A’s really need to spend more top-level money on pitching prospects with injury histories?
Nick - June 9, 2009
YES
From Andy Seiler’s draft chat
Im ok with the injury history. If his medicals don’t work out don’t sign him.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
If he want Scheppers with the 14th pick, he has to be happy with him at 44
DeJay - June 10, 2009
I get that but the dude throws 98 as a starter
he doesn’t have that much leverage. If his medical reports aren’t clean don’t sign him. Hoping he falls to the third… It can happen right?
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
3rd round pick... whole other story
I’d like the A’s leverage in that situation.

FUCKING MLB NETWORK GUYS.

ElQuesoCapitan - June 9, 2009
So based on comments I saw on the earlier thread,
I’m thinking the consensus of the community is pleased by this. So I won’t have to hear about it for the next year how “if only we picked
Wallace[so-and-so] instead” or “if only we lost two more games and were able to takeSmoak[so-and-so]”. Right?OK, back to work now.
iglew - June 9, 2009
I'm content.
Wiers103 - June 9, 2009
probaby not
it’s us afterall
chipper1001 - June 9, 2009
But will the Rangers fans be saying,
“If only we lost two more games, Oakland wouldn’t have stolen Grant Green out from under us”?
iglew - June 9, 2009
well they got purke
they can’t be too unhappy
chipper1001 - June 9, 2009
My prediction
The equivalent of the “if we’d only lost to Texas on the last day of the season” thing will be “If we’d only not signed O-Cab” and then talking about all the guys we could have picked with the 2nd-rounder that went to Chicago.
Nick - June 9, 2009
true
chipper1001 - June 9, 2009
maybe o-cab will outperform all 60 guys taken before the next a's pick
xbhaskarx - June 9, 2009
I quite like this pick
DeJay - June 9, 2009
Green and Crosby
Kiss of death
gojohn10 - June 9, 2009
I think the J. J. Hardy comp was a better one
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
J.J. plays amazing D, Green plays solid d.
J.J. will hit better. Not a good comp.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
I dont think JJ plays "amazing" d
but other than that….yeah not really comparable
winchester5 - June 9, 2009

Because glove picks where primary question is the bat generally don’t work out well. Just hasty generalization there.

danmerqury - June 9, 2009
That's a damn good shortstop
65 hitting? That’s over .300. I’ll take a .300 hitting SS with 17 bombs ANY day.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
All day!
Syphon - June 9, 2009
Can he play 3B?
ElQuesoCapitan - June 9, 2009
If his bat is for real but he's found lacking at SS you'd think that'd be an option.
OldhamA - June 9, 2009
Sounds like his two main problems are:
contact and maturity. The first is probably going to make or break him, the second he’ll probably outgrow as he rises through the ranks.
Nico - June 9, 2009
Some good reading.
Green has very good range and a good arm and should stay at SS for many years to come, but he’ll need to do better than the subpar 17 errors in 41 games this summer. However, in my brief chat with his Cape Cod (Chatham A’s) manager, John Schiffner, I was told that the grounds are rough and that Green was getting to a lot of balls that most SS’s couldn’t. Schiffner compares Green to Evan Longoria, whom he also managed, and loves the kid. A move to third down the road is not out of the question, as he adds weight and loses range. Green has good power potential and a good eye at the plate, and a big help to his accolades rest in his stellar performance in the wood bat Cape this past summer, where he hit .348, with 6 HR’s, 21 RBI, went 10/13 in SB’s, walked 28 times, struck out 38, and had a line of .348/.451/.547/.998, all in 161 AB’s.
From Here
Syphon - June 9, 2009
"Move to 3rd not out of the question"
We should just remember the basic advice on picking SS, CF, and C as much as possible — if they aren’t quite up to par defensively, they can still contribute at 3B or RF. Pick a 3B who’s not that good and you’ve got another 1B or DH.
And, in the A’s case, a 3B would be fine, too.
Nick - June 9, 2009
Zonis - June 9, 2009
Not a good thing.

Andy Seiler: I think this is a mistake, depending on how much he signs for. This will hamstring the Rangers in their other picks, and I hate his delivery. This will take some work, but I know the Rangers have a long-term development program. But this seems strange to me.
Morgasm - June 9, 2009
Hmm...yeah, that's a good point
I waver too much with the draft.
It’s sooo HUGE though
Blicks - June 9, 2009
i have a random question
i was looking at green’s stats…what does slugging % consist of?
robbo650 - June 9, 2009
Instead of average where they count all hits equally,
A single is 1, a double is 2, triple is 3, and HR is 4. All added up, divided by at bats just like average.
danmerqury - June 9, 2009
o thank you
robbo650 - June 9, 2009
Hitting bases/out made at the plate
So a single = 1, a double 2, etc. And a GIDP= 2 outs.
If a guy goes 1/4 with a HR and no GIDPs, he slugged 1.000 that game (4 bases/4 outs).
Nick - June 9, 2009
For what it's worth,
I keep reading a comp for Grant Green as sort of a Tulowitski/Longoria hybrid. Consider me excited.

danmerqury - June 9, 2009
I don't see the problem with Bobby Crosby comparisons
If you all remember, Crosby was turning into a very good shortstop before he started getting hurt every year. He also never gained the ability to stop swinging at the outside slider. If Green can become what Crosby was projected to be, we got a GREAT pick.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
I'm sorry.
I seemed to have misheard that. Did you say notBoCro?
walkoff baltimore chop - June 9, 2009

He did not, in fact, say BoCro
Morgasm - June 9, 2009
It's hard to be upset about the Green pick
1. He’s by far the best draft-eligible MI
2. He’s affordable
3. No one knows if we’d have even drafted Matzek or Crow if they’d fallen
4. Who else was there? If Matzek or Crow wanted too much money (maybe Purke too), who’s left? Shelby Miller? I prefer Green anyway.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
I dont think anyones that upset with the pick
mainly because we just lost out on Matzek and Crowe. Its like last year, but a Double Whammy.
Zonis - June 9, 2009
Would we have even drafted them though?
We KNOW we’d have drafted Smoak. We don’t know that we’d have even picked Matzek or Crow.

dtownmbrown - June 9, 2009

grover - June 9, 2009
Thank God
This 4 mins shit has gotta go. It’s just the baseball draft. It’s not like the NFL or NBA where it’s this big orchestrated pile of bullshit. (I say that as I’ll be dead in tuned for all 5 hours of the NBA draft on the 25th.)
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
The only legit justification in the NFL is the possibility of trades
Since you can’t trade picks in MLB, the wait is pretty useless.
Nick - June 9, 2009
Yeah that's true with the NBA too
That 5 mins is important so they can blah blah blah and blather about how stupid the pick from bumfuck nowhere was.
But, the NBA has always done the draft that way. Why does the MLB need to start now? Hardly anybody is there anyway? That’s not how the MLB draft works.
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
Well, the NBA has only 2 rounds
so if they had a minute per pick it would barely last an hour!
Nick - June 9, 2009
Yeah Nick
But not only that, they have at least 15-20 guys in the green room invited there. Who is there at that draft?
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
I mean who is at the MLB draft?
This is just so stupid. I understand changing things. But, this makes little sense. Most of these guys are still playing!
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
And Bud Selig sounds like a drunken horse
He’s a terrible choice to don the podium.
pookeyguru - June 9, 2009
Green quote from Goldstein
I don’t know if this has been posted yet but coll quote…Kevin Goldstein (4:17:13 PM PT): Oakland takes Grant Green. No surprise here at all, and a nice break for them. Last year, they hoped and prayed that Smoak would drop to them and just missed out, this year Green was the guy they hoped would fall, and he did. I think Oakland got away with a truckload here. Green is a better player than half the guys selected ahead of him.

Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009

sprtsnwyn - June 9, 2009

Zonis - June 9, 2009
What happens with Leyja now?
Nick - June 9, 2009
2B hopefully
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Hopefully Leyja is a good SS too.
You really can’t have too many good players.
OldhamA - June 9, 2009
But I meant, where are these guys all going to play?
Hopefully, Green will outgrow rookie ball sooner rather than later.
Nick - June 9, 2009
Again it's a good problem to have.
I’d imagine Green takes priority though – 3 years older than Leyja and signed for much more money.
OldhamA - June 9, 2009
Yeah, they just need to make sure each guy gets the playing time he needs to develop
Nick - June 9, 2009
Green
Doubt Green will start in Rookie Ball – he is a pretty advanced college hitter – my guess is he’ll start in Stockton or maybe Kane County.
DeJay - June 10, 2009
Why? Is he not going to work out at SS?
I mean, it’s not like the A’s are lacking in 2B prospects right now.
Nick - June 9, 2009
Leyja
Leyja likely goes to play SS at Vancouver
DeJay - June 10, 2009
Maybe Green starts at Vancouver?
I’d like to see what you said, though.

How about this
ElQuesoCapitan - June 9, 2009
From earlier
Scheppers if hes there (please god i don’t believe in you but make this happen)
Names to think about in the 3rd round
I <3 Tommy Mendonca, who would not only fit a need but would be a great value pick. He Kâs way too much but his defense is really really fantastic. Andy Seiler says there is only about a 20-30% chance of him lasting to us :â-(
Kendal Voz â starter/reliever from Baylor might be a great value if you can keep him in the starting rotation. Has a nasty slider and in the pen got up to 97 as a closer for Team USA, though as a starter hes more in the 89-92 range. He also has a change which gets the 10 mph differential. While some may think that being mostly a reliever presents added risk there is also probably less mileage on his arm than 3 year starters. Could be a sleeper in the third.
Josh Pleghy has a good bat for a C, thought there are some concerns about his power translating to wood, but the real question is his ability to stay behind the plate. He has some problems with pitchers with a lot of movement (he will never catch Tim Wakefield) and has stone hands. His arm is average with good strength but sometimes he rushes and it affects his accuracy. Might be a good risk in the third.
Luke Baily was a first round talent as a high school Catcher with few questions about his ability to stay there and some raw power projection. He blew out his arm and needed TJ surgery in May. Could be a good value if you want to rehab him.
Colton Cain is a prep lefty from Tx who throws a heavy sinking 94 mph fastball. His other pitches curve and change up are inconsistent but his change up shows potential and some think that his motion would adopt a hard slider well. Definitely a project.

sprtsnwyn - June 9, 2009

Zonis - June 9, 2009
Washington could play 2B
Two more picks, also..
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
I don't like the Levon pick for the Rays.
I just don’t think he was even close to BPA there.
Blicks - June 9, 2009

Zonis - June 9, 2009
Zonis - June 9, 2009

Everett Williams
Kyle Heckathorn
Tommy Joseph
Andy Oliver
Garrett Gould
Still a LOT of talent left.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Damn, I knew it. There goes Wheeler.
Ah well.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Mmhmm. Lots to choose one.
Although I bet most of those guys are gone in the comp and 2nd rounds.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Agreed, but they're still there for now
All it takes it one to fall.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
Zonis - June 9, 2009
I've met the guy before.
He’s one of the cockiest SOBs I’ve ever encountered. Granted he and I were both drunk, but nevertheless, what an asshole. I did some research on the fellow after the encounter. A real class act. Also, I talked to one of his ex-classmates in HS. For what it’s worth, my “source” told me in junior year he was standing at 5’7" 140, and strongly suspected that Jackson was on some type of illegal supplement. Whatever, the Cubs deserve him.
Oh, and for those wondering, no Jackson did not come in and snake my girl at the party, but I could see why one would think that. He really just was that big of an jerk.
Pucking Insane - June 9, 2009
You're correct
He’s a complete douchebag. I went to the same HS as him and I was on JV when he was a senior. He always had raw talent but never seemed to fully tap into it. Kinda surreal to see someone I know getting taken in the 1st round though…
Helloooo 1st - June 9, 2009
Went to high school with the guy,
He can come off a little cocky but for the most part he’s a really good guy. Always treated everyone with respect, and probably the hardest worker I’ve ever met. Also, his junior year he was proably as tall as he is now, just not as bulky. From what I hear, he is constantly in the weight room.
I’ve got to hand it to the guy, I always doubted his ability and he continues to prove me wrong. Congratulations, Brett.
travdog6 - June 9, 2009
why do so many people knwo this guy??
harendaman365 - June 9, 2009
Because hes related to Kevin Bacon?
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
hahaha
DeJay - June 10, 2009
hahahahah
Yeah, I went to highschool with him. He was a decent person, but yes cocky and dumb as rocks. Not a bad guy though. On the PED thing, his neck is like three times as big as it was 3 years ago. But people can change naturally, so I can’t judge, but honestly that was the first thing to pop into my mind when I saw him last.
yo - June 12, 2009
