I'm opening a new thread as not to clutter grover's fantastic draft post with the live comments. If you haven't checked it out, please do so. It's great.
The A's have the 13th pick, and the draft begins now.
1) Washington Nationals select: Stephen Strasburg
2) Seattle Mariners select: Dustin Ackley
3) San Diego Padres select: Donovan Tate
4) Pittsburgh Pirates select: Tony Sanchez
5) Baltimore Orioles select: Matt Hobgood
6) San Francisco Giants select: Zach Wheeler

9) Detroit Tigers select: Jacob Turner
10) Washington Nationals select: Drew Storen

We need some thread mojo.
Draft > any non-playoff game.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
So true, this and the trade deadline are two of the single most important days in baseball.

BA reporting the first 10 Picks
Link
1. Nationals: San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg.
2. Mariners: North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley.
3. Padres: Georgia HS outfielder Donavan Tate.
4. Pirates: Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez.
5. Orioles: California HS righthander Matt Hobgood.
6. Giants: Georgia HS righthander Zack Wheeler.
7. Braves: Vanderbilt lefthander Mike Minor.
8. Reds: North Carolina righhander Alex White.
10. Nationals: Stanford righthander Drew Storen.
At No. 9, Tigers are deciding whether to spend big (California HS lefthander Tyler Matzek, Missouri HS righty Jacob Turner), smaller (Texas HS righty Shelby Miller) or a little smaller (Arizona State RHP Mike Leake).
At No. 11 the Rockies will take the most signable high school pitcher, and that Arizona State righthander Mike Leake is not in the equation.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
Crow AND Matzek out of the top 10.
Scheppers out of the first round seems likely.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
With those picks I think my board is
Tyler Matzek
Tanner Scheppers
Aaron Crow
Mike Leake
Tim Wheeler
Bobby Borchering
Grant Green
Jacob Turner
Alex White
Matt Purke
Chad James
Shelby Miller
Wil Myers
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
I will throw something if Matzek is there and we pass. Probably a chair.

He goes to Capo Valley High (right down the street from my house)…
He is a BEAST. I wouldn’t expect him to be at 13.
dtownmbrown - June 9, 2009
Scheppers over Crow?
I worry about the shoulder, convince me you’re right.
grover - June 9, 2009
I worry about it too
but hes been pitching well this year even though early on he was tenative with his curve.
From BA’s draft blog. His change up is 88 mph and could be plus. I think he could really be a dominant #1 starter. Crow hasn’t improved his change that much this year and if he doesn’t I worry about him. Crow also has a tendency to lose control and nibble.
designatedforassignment - June 9, 2009
Hope we pick a good first rounder
I didn’t like the Weeks pick last year, but I also didn’ t like how the draft bloggers knew it would happen before it happened. I’ve been avoiding all the prognosticators in hopes of being surprised.
sprtsnwyn - June 9, 2009
Can you give a link to the Live Draft and the Draft Tracker in the thread?
Zonis - June 9, 2009
THIS THREAD IS WAY BETTER THAN ZONIS' OPEN THREAD
:-D

Sorry Zonis! I didn't see yours!
baseballgirl - June 9, 2009
Oh wait! I got it!
MIkeV… you’re actually OAKLANDathletics!
Zonis - June 9, 2009
It'd be nice to have a summary thread.
This one is sure the get cluttered quickly. Perhaps your thread could be used for that – y’know for those ANers that don’t have the time to follow the draft as it happens, but would like a condensed reaction when they do log in.
OldhamA - June 9, 2009
is the draft being televised?
or did mlb give up on that experiment?

MLB network has it, if you get that channel.

grover - June 9, 2009
Personal opinion
The top prep arms priced themselves out of the Top 10, I don’t see the A’s chasing them down. Leake and Crow probably top the A’s board.
grover - June 9, 2009
Your post is award-winning BTW...
…just awesome

ZigFan31 - June 9, 2009
Well the one i really want to give you isn't appropriate, but...
You win the award for:
Most likely to cuss
Mosty likely to overuse TWSS
Most likely to overuse cap locks
Most likey to overuse exclamation points and question marks
Just to name a few. I’m sure pamcakes has a few choice awards too.
ZigFan31 - June 9, 2009
What the FUCK???!!!?!?!?
I mean, TWSS, right? RIGHT??
WHAT’S THE OTHER ONE YOU REALLY WANT TO GIVE ME?!?!

Is he that good?
Won’t lie, I know more about the college players. KC will probably draft him just to piss us off.
sprtsnwyn - June 9, 2009
He's pretty good.

Braves will almost certainly pick a HSer.
The one college pick they’ve picked anytime recently didn’t really do them much.

Nats draft future ace Strasburg at No. 1
Why is mlb so moosh? everything I here about strasburg is the same sht i heard about Todd Van P. BLAh Blah blah Best ever. I thought TVP was the coming of JC and what a let down. It was sure fun trying to get his rookie back in the day but that was about it. Let down. hope this guy does better stras
bighappy - June 9, 2009
did you see the video?
In the like 30 second clip, even I think he’s going to be awesome. WICKED curve.

Ugh

The draft is the biggest example of how little power little Selig has.

why is everyone applauding minor?
harendaman365 - June 9, 2009
Because there is no booing at the draft.
I shall boo.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
i think everyone is happy
the braves did a huge overdraft
Morgasm - June 9, 2009
Apparently they like drafting Southerners
Geographic region seems like a pretty silly deciding factor in making drafting decisions.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 9, 2009
Minor gets rushed, falls out of favor, gets traded to the A's for some crappy rental OFer
then gets good once with us.

OaktownPower - June 9, 2009

I just want to hear who the A’s are going to take….now.
asyouwish33 - June 9, 2009
The studio has fake audience posters hanging on the walls...

Always like that with the posters.
OaktownPower - June 9, 2009

sprtsnwyn - June 9, 2009
it means we aren't guaranteed one of them
noava22 - June 9, 2009

Not in this economy...
Pucking Insane - June 9, 2009
Yeah. Detroit's destruction is the big question
but they did it with Porcello…
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Tigers don't have a minor league system at all.
even if they trade him, they need to re-stock badly. passing on a pick like that is not a good idea, with the way their pitching depth in their system is.
noava22 - June 9, 2009
I agree, but that was before Porcello
But I’m prolly about to be wrong…
Pucking Insane - June 9, 2009
Just Kidding! ; )

Schep, Crow, White, Matzek still on the board.

i think that’s what he means by “an oakland a’s draft”
SamYam - June 9, 2009
no
we drafted him previously in the 7th round
noava22 - June 9, 2009
No, he meant the A's took him out of high school.
OaktownPower - June 9, 2009
He means the A's drafted him previously
like before this year’s draft.
methodrampage - June 9, 2009
That means we picked him 3 years ago
OkayJay81 - June 9, 2009
Huh.
Billy wouldn’t have done that if he really, really wanted the guy, would he?
Englishmajor - June 9, 2009
You're right
I think Billy has so much time on his hands he can afford to watch players he’s not at all interested in.
methodrampage - June 9, 2009
There was a story in Moneyball
where Billy Beane avoided seeing a player the A’s were really interested in because he didn’t want to to tip his hand.
LongLiveLangerhans - June 9, 2009
Semi-bold prediction:
Green and Matzek are both on the board for us and we take Green.
swatnick - June 9, 2009
Hypothetical
What do we do with Coleman, move him to 3B?
asyouwish33 - June 9, 2009
Matzek is gone 4 sure by then
kitoko - June 9, 2009
But then Matzek is easily a top 10 talent
and he’s still not gone yet.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
Espn's blog

swatnick - June 9, 2009
I hope not.
No Mariners.
Even the Yanks/Sux are better.
Blicks - June 9, 2009
HERE WE GO

Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009

Matzek
I like Crow a LOT, though…he’s SLIGHTLY lower. Green is clearly below the two pitchers.
Gallagher's Watermelons - June 9, 2009
probably two?
noava22 - June 9, 2009
