A's score 6 runs in the first to chase O's starter Jeremy Guthrie. Jack Cust had the big blow - a 3-run bomb to center. Braden locked in with 7 K's to tie a career high.
Trevor Cahill is pitching tomorrow evening. Cahill has made 11 starts this year and in all of them except for two, he has allowed just two earned runs or less. In the starts in which he has allowed more than two earned runs, he allowed seven earned runs in each game. His ERA is 2.43 if you take away the two starts in which he has allowed more than two earned runs.

Oakland Athletics’ Jack Cust, right, and teammate Orlando Cabrera embrace after Cust hit a three-run home run off Baltimore Orioles’ Jeremy Guthrie in the first inning of a baseball game Friday, June 5, 2009, in Oakland, Calif.
seriously, i can’t wait until Duke comes back. Our starting pitching depth will be insane. Who goes down when the Duke returns? Outman? Mazzaro? Cahill? Anderson? A good problem to have I dare say.
Cahill has significantly improved over his last 6 starts. He’s seriously cut his BBs and upped his Ks. He went from walking more than he was striking out to showing decent, if not dominant control
Outman’s got a FIP around 4.5, but he’s had more footing than the other guys. He stays.
Then its whichever of Anderson or Vinny looks like the better choice to stay up.
Assuming Duke actually comes back though. And pitches effectively.
Outman’s ERA is 2.51 in his last six starts if my calculations are correct and if you take away the two starts in which Cahill gave up seven earned runs each, his ERA is 2.43 for the year.
After the long fly out, Springer showed the good cutter with the last two hitters, better than I’ve seen in many, many outings from him. His problem has been pretty much what happened to Guthrie tonight: velocity ok but just no movement at all on his fastball. If he gets the movement back on his cutter, like he finally showed tonight, he’ll be fine – the guy actually does know how to pitch and looked good in April.
What is up with our pitching staff giving up one run?
Unacceptable! We’re up 9-0 when I lose the radio feed and then I come home to find we’ve given up a run. That means we were outscored 1-0 in the late innings. BS!
Seriously, what a great game! I love it when we get hot like this.
I love it.

I kinda like them, in fact!
GreenNGoldSooner - June 5, 2009

stm72 - June 5, 2009
Not anymore.
iglew - June 5, 2009
24 scoreless (through 6 tonight)...not 21
stm72 - June 5, 2009
are you sure?
67MARQUEZ - June 5, 2009
I am still having difficulty wrapping my head around the idea of "Ace: Dallas Braden"
Zonis - June 5, 2009
Davis got a good read on that one
(for once)
doctorK - June 5, 2009
nice play Rajai
SwisherThresher - June 5, 2009
Aww, no more shutout.

jakebmill - June 5, 2009
Get Springer up!
GreenNGoldSooner - June 5, 2009
No three game shutout?
WTF? These guys suck.
alox - June 5, 2009
Great Scott!
9-1
This might be a good thing as now Pepe won’t kill him self for the shutout
adragon - June 5, 2009
I hope Maz and Anderson punk
his sorry ass for giving up a solo shot.
alox - June 5, 2009
Go Dallas!
mrod - June 5, 2009
nice catch Croz!
jakebmill - June 5, 2009
On ESPN MLB page. Ron Washington - Extension might not be picked up
Rangers would be stupid not to extend the man soon.
Come HOME RON!
ryanmoser - June 5, 2009
rangers ARE stupid, so
shame for ron
maybe he can come back to oakland . . .
eastcoasta'sfan - June 5, 2009
That story reminded me how much I love Ron Washington.

we should grab him.
Zonis - June 5, 2009
more like steal him back
ryanmoser - June 5, 2009
Trade Crosby for him
adragon - June 5, 2009
yes, please
jakebmill - June 5, 2009
I seriously hope they don't pick up the extension.
The Rangers are a better team with him on board.
alox - June 5, 2009
Good lord, Juan Samuel is the O's 3B coach
Do you think he even knows the take sign?
Nick - June 5, 2009
Rotation ERA
Braden: 3.41
Outman: 3.02
Cahill: 4.33
Anderson: 4.87
Mazzaro: 0.00
Zonis - June 5, 2009
Outman’s ERA is 2.51 in his last six starts if my calculations are correct and if you take away the two starts in which Cahill gave up seven earned runs each, his ERA is 2.43 for the year.
Rated-R Superstar - June 5, 2009
if you take away innings in which he's given up runs, he's got a 0.00 ERA
stm72 - June 5, 2009
Hey, it wasn’t a total “out there” comment.
Rated-R Superstar - June 5, 2009
i know, just goofin'

I’m completely sober.
Nico - June 5, 2009
Depending on which .18%, of course.
el campysino - June 5, 2009
Problem is their WHIP
Outman and Mazzaro have nice WHIP, but Braden, Anderson and Cahill all have a WHIP at about 1.40
Zonis - June 5, 2009
NO EDGAR - Let Braden pitch into the 8th and maybe the complete game
No edgar
ryanmoser - June 5, 2009
I miss complete games on this team.
jakebmill - June 5, 2009
Has ther been even one this year?
jdub69 - June 5, 2009
don't think so
I was referring to Hudson/Mulder
jakebmill - June 5, 2009
I was thinking Norris, Langford, Keough, & McCatty,
jdub69 - June 5, 2009
I don't think a starter has even faced a batter in the 9th so far this year
though I think someone might have thrown an 8-inning CG on the road.

I miss hitters that hit over the Mendoza Line on this team.

micdog2001 - June 5, 2009
Some promising news:
After the long fly out, Springer showed the good cutter with the last two hitters, better than I’ve seen in many, many outings from him. His problem has been pretty much what happened to Guthrie tonight: velocity ok but just no movement at all on his fastball. If he gets the movement back on his cutter, like he finally showed tonight, he’ll be fine – the guy actually does know how to pitch and looked good in April.
Nico - June 5, 2009
Celebrate!
