The A's inability to capitalize on an uninspiring effort by Randy Wolf did them in tonight in a 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.
Wasted was another fine outing by Vin Mazzaro, his fourth straight solid start since being called up on June 2. Mazzaro escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second, thanks to a leaping, back-handed catch by Orlando Cabrera off the bat of Russell Martin that saved two runs.
The A's struck first in the third inning. Bobby Crosby worked a lead-off walk, and one out later was sacrificed to second by Mazzaro, the young hurler's third successful bunt in two games. As he did to start off the game, LA starter Randy Wolf issued a free pass to Adam Kennedy, bringing up Kurt Suzuki, who doubled to score Crosby for a 1-0 lead. The damage was limited to a lone run when Jack Cust struck out looking for the second time.
Mazzaro gave it back in the bottom half, allowing the first homerun of his career, a shot to center by Orlando Hudson with two outs.
Oakland wasted a lead-off double by Matt Holliday in the fourth. Jason Giambi went the worse-case scenario route, making an out without advancing the runner. Andre Ethier made a nice grab over the railing in foul territory to retire Cabrera, and Crosby hit a first-pitch grounder to third as the Wolf worked out of danger once more. It wouldn't be the last time.
Mazzaro breezed through a 1-2-3 fourth, retiring the side on balls that never left the infield.
Again the A's got a runner as far as second, as Rajai Davis opened the fifth with a base hit and moved up ninety feet on another sacrifice bunt by Mazzaro. But Wolf induced a pair of ground balls from Kennedy and Suzuki to end the threat.
The fine glove work by Cabrera in the second inning to rob Russell Martin was undone three frames later, and it cost Mazzaro a chance at the win. His double-clutch allowed Martin to reach first base, and Wolf made like his mound adversary by bunting the runner to second. Juan Pierre singled home Martin as Davis appeared to take a nonchalant approach after gloving the ball (said Nico later that he may have been confused by the absence of a cut-off man). Suzuki alertly charged Davis' throw (which wasn't going to get the runner regardless), fielding it near the mound, and firing an off-balance strike to gun down Pierre at second. Just a fantastic play by the A's backstop.
Jack Cust jumped on Wolf's first pitch in the sixth for a base hit and was forced at second by Holliday, who moved up a bag on a base on balls to Giambi. But Wolf worked one last bit of magic before calling it a night, getting Cabrera to ground into an around-the-horn, rally-killing double play.
Wolf was effective if nothing else, leaving after six innings having allowed a run on five hits and four walks, while striking out three.
A Rajai Run evened things up in the seventh off reliever Corey Wade. With one out the centerfielder was plunked by a pitch. Mazzaro's evening (6IP, 5H, 2R, 1BB, 5K) ended when he was pulled for pinch-hitting Nomar Garciaparra who lifted a fly ball that dropped in front of Pierre near the left-field foul line. Davis was running the whole way- at first it appeared he missed the bag at third- and scored standing up to tie the game at two, while the throw went to second base.
It took only four batters for this thing to lose its "new game" smell.
First baseman James Loney hit a one-out ground rule double off Brad Ziegler, who followed that up by walking Martin, and allowing a tie-breaking base hit to pinch-hitter Mark Loretta.
Save for a one-out single by Cabrera in the ninth, the A's went down meekly after that, and Ryan Sweeney- fresh off the disabled list- put us out of our misery by hitting into a game-ending double play.
On to San Diego for three.

at least the A's are polite...
the dodgers let us off the hook last night, then we repay the favor. How courteous! How civilized!
Kallus - June 18, 2009
They only let us off the hook because we're such small fish.
el campysino - June 18, 2009
On the contrary, they were hungry

I wonder what will be higher...
Joe Mauer’s AVG for 2009 or the A’s win% for 2009…could be close…

If he has us on the sched a few more times...it'll help his cause...

Cahill's 1-2-3 4th inning was amazing.
Considering that he didn’t pitch tonight : )

I caught that, too.

I really have no idea what you guys are talking about.

67MARQUEZ - June 19, 2009
This team sucks. End of story.
The sad part? Buck, Barton, and Cunningham aren’t getting shit for playing time, and it’s at the expense of Davis, Giambi, and Sweeney.
For being such a brilliant front office, they’re sure doing some dumb shit.
mikev - June 18, 2009
Buck, Barton and Cunningham aren't worth a sh--
RickeyIsTheGreatest - June 18, 2009
Good point, keep running out Rajai Davis!
mikev - June 18, 2009
He's not worth much, either
I say get rid of all the dead weight and bring up Pennington, Patterson, Putnam and Carter. They couldn’t do much worse.
RickeyIsTheGreatest - June 18, 2009
lol
I’m drunk, and i’m not even dumb enough to do something like THAT.
mikev - June 18, 2009
OK, then keep running out Giambi, Hannahan, Cabrera and Cust
And losing.
RickeyIsTheGreatest - June 18, 2009
or guys with upside
like Buck, Barton, and Cunningham.
mikev - June 18, 2009
OK, I'll maybe give you Cunningham, because he hasn't yet had much of a chance
But haven’t Buck and Barton had enough time to make their mark in Oakland, with underwhelming results?
RickeyIsTheGreatest - June 18, 2009
Short answer?
NO.
Bucks only consistent tplaying time was his rookie year. He had an .875 OPS.
Barton has WAY too good of a track record in the minor leagues to let a subpar first year “write him off”
mikev - June 18, 2009
Some guys top out at triple-A
Look at Chris Denorfia.
RickeyIsTheGreatest - June 18, 2009
Yeah, only Barton was 21 in Triple A
Denorfia is 29.
mikev - June 18, 2009
His average in 55 games in Sac this season?
.245. Hardly makes the case for more playing time in the majors.
RickeyIsTheGreatest - June 18, 2009
Average is stupic, but whatever. Know who that's better than?
Giambi, Cabrera, Hannahan, Sweeney, Buck, adn Cust.
mikev - June 18, 2009
Buck, Barton, and Cunningham? We are seriously in trouble if that's our "future"
Buck = Selfish, injury-prone spineless narcissist
Barton = Dan Johnson Redux
Cunningham = Eric Byrnes Lite
smokelanda - June 18, 2009
BTW - Rajai Davis in June = 15 for 49 with .811 OPS
smokelanda - June 18, 2009
Buck = Selfish, injury-prone spineless narcissist
Haha okay. I’m not even a Buck fan but LOL okay.

Especially Cunningham.

Nice quotes from Orlando Cabrera
“I suck,” he said. “I don’t even know how to describe it. … I suck. For real.”
“I’m getting old, maybe.”

I’m guessing you think “accountability” is only “accountability” if the players speak out of it in public/in the newspapers? No brownie points for players holding themselves accountable privately without feeling the need to blast themselves in the newspapers? Haha okay, whatever makes you feel better.

Best pure stuff, movement, poise, and demeaner of all the pitchers. Hell…. For every single player on the team. Ellis, Crosby, Cabrera, Sweeney, Buck, Barton,… wish they could lay down sacrifice bunts like Mazzaro. Mazzaro makes baseballs cry.
Colorado Fan - June 18, 2009
Its a wonder what 2 months in AAA will do to a good pitcher.
Future Ed - June 18, 2009
Isn't that a joke?
Proof positive that all it takes is a little bit of effort to put a bunt down. I don’t care what anybody says, there is absolutely no excuse for a major-league baseball player not being able to bunt whenever asked.
You simply stick the damn bat out there and let the ball hit it. The reason we don’t bunt well? Because the coaching staff refuses to make the hitters practice it. Period.

What an asshole
Some people out there, a.k.a the majority of LA residents, are retarded.
oaklandSMASH - June 18, 2009
Yeah
I can understand it if I am being loud or obnoxious and with a group of guys. But walking out, just my wife and I, come on!
And, it isn’t like I am a Giants or Padre’s fan. The 2 teams haven’t played a meaningful game since 88 and their team won!
I will never understand how someone can actually walk up to a girl and flip her off or talk shit when she isn’t doing ANYTHING, just because she has on the other team’s colors.
Bigtoe - June 18, 2009
It's the need of those dickheads to front
It’s all the inadequacies LA people have in themselves. Fuck those Monte Sereno turds!
oaklandSMASH - June 18, 2009
Oh yes,
One fan out of 50,000 gives you the bird and it is somehow a reflection on the whole city.
Funny thing is, most people in LA either don’t give a shit about Nor Cal or else are fairly positive toward it. Out in the Bay Area, it seems everyone has a negative opinion of Los Angeles. You tell someone you are from LA in the Bay Area and they turn their nose up and say “Eww! I’m sorry!” You say the same thing in LA and they say, “Oh, I love the Bay Area!”
Someone who gets bent out of shape by some retard at Dodger Stadium giving them the bird is clearly NOT from Los Angeles.
smokelanda - June 18, 2009
Wait a second
Never once did I say anything about ALL dodger fans or LA people because of the actions of one guy. The other posters did that. I did say that I don’t understand why any fan of any team would act like such an a-hole.
And, most impotant, I didn’t get bent out of shape becuase someone gave me the bird. I got bent out of shape because someone gave my wife the bird. Huge difference. And he guy walked over to her and basically shoved his 2 middle fingers into her face, he wasn’t flipping her off from across the parking lot.
That all being said, your arguement that people in LA “love the Bay Area” and people in the Bay Area hate LA, is simply proof that the Bay Area is better than LA and even the people in LA know it!! :)
Bigtoe - June 19, 2009
No offense, but did you handle your business?
Because if a guy really “shoved his 2 middle fingers into her (your wife’s) face” then you needed to take care of that.
I’m sorry that happened, I hope you left him a little reminder about inappropriate behavior.
Vacafan - June 19, 2009
I said "Seriously??"
and shoved him back. His girl grabbed his drunk ass, pulled him away, and apologized.
Not really worth doing anything further at that point.
Bigtoe - June 19, 2009
Cool. No excuse for it, but I'm glad to hear he was drunk, at least.
Vacafan - June 19, 2009
my brother embarrassed me after
Game 1 of the ‘89 Series. He must have walked out with ten of those plastic beer cups piled high. Found himself walking next to a Giants fan, whose eardrums he decided to puncture with shouts of "We’re going to sweeeeeep!"
Wait, that’s actually a good story.

My girl’s e-mail was read on the radio…can’t believe Robert actually read it! Awesome!
Here it is below:
Hi Robert,
Just wanted to chime in about the game tonight.
First, Bob Geren is a terrible manager and needs to be fired immediately! No way you bring in Sweeney to PH in the 9th totally cold…Crosby at least deserved to get his last at bat. What the hell? Of course Geren will give the “Oh he was a lefty going in against a righty so I had to go with Sweeney….blah-blah-blah..”.
Also, when Cabrera comes out to the media and says, " I suck, Maybe I’m getting old. I suck!", maybe it’s time that Mr. Cabrera and Mr. Geren get on the same page for crying out loud!
Disappointing loss for sure and this team needs a major overhaul altogether.
Thanks for your time Robert!

Common knowledge
that seems to escape Mr. Beane
oaklandSMASH - June 18, 2009
At this point...
…. all you can really do is enjoy the young starting pitching. Four of them look really good right now.
I have no idea what Beane and co. are going to do about offense next year? I’m sure they’ll find an aging and/or injury prone bat to give us some hope of another Frank Thomas/John Jaha situation.
Is it wrong to want Ryan Sweeney to start taking HGH?
McBain - June 18, 2009
Spike the spread and fix the tests,
then the A’s will be the best…
Gaijin_Suketto - June 19, 2009
You had a negative free game thread from me which I am sure you enjoyed
but since I went to the game and they fucked my record I get to have a negative retort.
1) Apart from the rookie pitchers this team is 100 percent horrible. Got to see it in person
2) Brad Ziegler should never pitch with a lead or a tie. He has been found out in a big way. As soon as the lefty came to the plate, I said, “Game over if he gets a hit”. Sure enough it was game over.
Lot of A’s fans there which was good to see. Many more than I see at the slegnA home of course.
LOL at Juan Pierre and the gift run we got.
Too many fucking DP’s.
Orando Cabrera cannot field and cannot hit and in hindsight is a total waste of money.
Mazzaro pitched very well. That was like an off speed meatball that he served but apart from that I was very impressed.
How many times did we have the leadoff runner on and it failed everytime but once.
My Dodger friends both said they felt sorry for me that this team is so sucky in the hitting department. They both notice we have much pitching talent.
Oh and I forgot, Get JACK CUST out of the 3 hole. Back to back K’’s looking is pathetic and of course he gets a single on the first pitch. He should be in the 2 or down the order as far as I am concerned.
At least it was a close game and we lost 2 games with Ziggy and got outscored in the 3 games by 1 run. 2 wins and a loss would have been better
My record is now screwed and I blame the offense and Ziggy who is a big fat zero in my book.

Bad things about Dodger Stadium
I don’t hate the Dodgers in fact if I wasn’t an A’s fan, I would be a Dodger fan but that ballpark has to be demolished.
It took 1 hour to get a parking spot. The traffic was horrendous as usual going thru downtown LA and I have never seen the parking lot in such chaos as last night. You need a respirator and a spare oxygen tank to recover after climbing 8000 steps. This ballpark is so out of date and the parking structure is such an abortion that they should pay the fans for coming.
I saw thousands of A’s fans, including some who were yelling “Lets go Oakland, Let’s go Oakland”. Which is fine except it was after the game ended.
I guess the reasoning with that is that if they start cheering 24 hours before the next game then the A"s might have a better chance of winning.
Trainman - June 19, 2009

More of the same
Pitching-yes…Hitting-no……………..Hitting-yes…Pitching-no…..just more of what we have seen most of the year. Except during the streak when the team put it all together. The A’s are at a distinct disadvantage in interleague play with the situation of no DH.. Mr. Cust has to play the OF to be in the lineup and as much as I love Jack’s hitting game he is a step down on the defensive side. Also having to have the pitchers hit is a complete joke…..when will the NL realize this I do not know…….pitchers are total rally killers,,,god awful.
Kudos to our young pitchers….we have got something here let’s just hope the Great Beene (much sarcasm) doesnt trade them away in the interest of a lower payroll.
