I’d just like to Cahill work out of those 6th innings before turning it over to the pen, and AJ hits LHP ok anyway – plus I’d want Breslow available later in the game for a similar matchup. But nice job.
How unrelentingly positive and generic Fosse (who I love) and Kuiper (who I don’t) always are. Would it kill them to mention that maybe Floyd is doing well tonight because they are A’s are staggeringly pathetic at offense right now? Or to chastise the A’s for not capitalizing on scoring opportunities? Or to slam BoCros or Ocab? Or something? I don’t think their job is to pretend everything is ok.
So, from what I’ve heard, there’s been a pattern. The D-backs were on a losing streak, then they lost the series (or got swept) against the Dodgers, which then lead to Melvin being fired. Rockies: losing streak, lost series/got swept against the Dodgers, Hurdle was fired.
…the A’s need to go on a losing streak right before the series with the Bums and then proceed to be swept.
Most people assume the right play is to throw to second,
but that allows the batter to reach first most of the time. Since the runner is frozen near first on a pop-up, if you let it drop and throw to first you get the batter out and then you have the runner easily in a rundown.
he had a good track record. he struggled in the majors with us last year, though (though i think that’s largely because we called him up too quickly). if he can replicate those numbers in the bigs, then yeah, we screwed that one up.

I thought Cahill pitched great tonight
His sinker really did look pretty unhittable tonight. Kind of uncontrollable, too, but really nasty, and he had excellent velocity, too.
Nick - June 1, 2009
Reminded me a bit of Kirk Saarloos
He used to get in such a groove throwing that thing and the hitters seemed to pick up on it pretty well after 5 innings… if not sooner.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
Saaloos never threw that hard.
Cahill blew Thome away with a high, tailing fastball in his first AB. Saarloos was physically incapable of throwing that pitch.

I'm only referring to the sinker

9Custs - June 1, 2009
How tempted were Nix's parents...
….to name one of their sons “Nicholas”?
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
They were tempted to name one "Niycholas"
iglew - June 1, 2009
Saved by the wind!
Rated-R Superstar - June 1, 2009
OK, breathe again
doctorK - June 1, 2009
Good job, Sweeney!
walkoff baltimore chop - June 1, 2009
Good job, Lake Michigan!
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
Gotta love it.
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009
it could be worse...
we could be the mets and have blown a 5-0 lead to the pittsburgh pirates
mills16 - June 1, 2009
We'd still be in a nice new ballpark, though.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
At least then we'd be a winning team having a bad day
Instead of a losing team having a medium day.
Nico - June 1, 2009
yeah, good point...
i’m just trying to make myself feel better
mills16 - June 1, 2009
hey look at the positive side of things
we are tied with the 1st place team in the Central division
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
i like the way you think
mills16 - June 1, 2009
Fosse on the near-HR
“That was a good one.”
No word on the number of fancies, however.
Nick - June 1, 2009
Well...It's only one run.
Nico - June 1, 2009
Unhappy schmifty
Nick - June 1, 2009
Yeah :(
But my dad didn’t even break that much stuff! So it couldn’t have been the worst loss of the season.
schmifty - June 1, 2009
or we could be the AL version of Nats
oh wait
robbo650 - June 1, 2009
oy...i dont want to believe that
mills16 - June 1, 2009
the mets broadcast just said "they just suffered their worst loss of the season"...
how many times have we as fans have said that about the a’s this year alone?
mills16 - June 1, 2009
That'll be an interesting conversation in October
What was the worst loss of 2009? I’m sure there’ll be lots of candidates.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
I think the extra-inning game in Seattle is the worst so far
Nick - June 1, 2009
It's only June!
We got more than three months of suck to go!
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
last series we said said 3 times
robbo650 - June 1, 2009
not sure...
Not sure what’s worse: GameDay audio that works or cuts out and drops the stream.
whaxed - June 1, 2009
Hawk is worse
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009

Never ever, Midway all the way.
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009

robbo650 - June 1, 2009
seriously though
after the nats, are we the worst team in baseball?
ORthey - June 1, 2009
yup
robbo650 - June 1, 2009
on paper or reality?
yes either way
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
on paper i think we are decent
in reality we suck…Holliday cust and giambi all around 25-35 HRs isnt working tho
robbo650 - June 1, 2009
Right now, I'd have to say yes.
JJ Martin - June 1, 2009
here are the overall standings
ESPN MLB
Ahead of Washington, behind Colorado
SwisherThresher - June 1, 2009
How come THEY get to fire their manager?
{pouts}
Nico - June 1, 2009
So, from what I’ve heard, there’s been a pattern. The D-backs were on a losing streak, then they lost the series (or got swept) against the Dodgers, which then lead to Melvin being fired. Rockies: losing streak, lost series/got swept against the Dodgers, Hurdle was fired.
…the A’s need to go on a losing streak right before the series with the Bums and then proceed to be swept.
walkoff baltimore chop - June 1, 2009
Absolutely owned
and made to look very bad
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Now THAT was the kind of AB...
….I’ve come to expect from Holliday this season.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
Just think what the bottom of the order will do
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Swing, at least?
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
Even if they all ground out to the pitcher
it will be an easier inning to watch.
DaSwinginA's - June 1, 2009
i wish fosse's voice was in holliday's head on that 3rd pitch
“looking nothing but fastball”
mills16 - June 1, 2009
I think he was.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009

Oh wait, it was.

Hit4TheCycle - June 1, 2009

GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
trade
i say we trade bob geren for some new bats and some seattle mariners ball girls
cmurdax82 - June 1, 2009
he should be joining clint hurdle

mills16 - June 1, 2009
I'll take brickbats and the golden girls.
JJ Martin - June 1, 2009
if we had ball girls maybe our team would smile
cmurdax82 - June 1, 2009
bats?

robbo650 - June 1, 2009
iglew - June 1, 2009
can they stop walking podsednik?
mills16 - June 1, 2009
Leadoff walks are great
if you are the team receiving them
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Bring in the righty for a sure Podsednik stolen base
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
will this be the good casilla or the bad casilla?
Deborah51 - June 1, 2009
Probably
Nico - June 1, 2009
A Working Class Jairo...
….is something to be.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
I'd be tempted to leave Breslow in just to control the running game
I don’t think Casilla can stop Podsednik from stealing. Not that he can stop Ramirez and Dye from hitting.
Nico - June 1, 2009
Yep
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
I am sure the Sox hitters are feeling pretty good about themselves
about now.
DP please
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Gawd!
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009
Are the A's giving Posednik the pass
So they can get to Lisa Dergan?
Hit4TheCycle - June 1, 2009
mmmmm.....lisa
mills16 - June 1, 2009
She is sizzling freaking hot.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
We need a line-drive DP!
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
here comese the bunt
mills16 - June 1, 2009
I would take the steal first if I were managing Chicago
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
agreed....
mills16 - June 1, 2009
Alexei Ramirez weighs what? 75 lbs?
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
LOL...i was just thinking that!
Deborah51 - June 1, 2009
hes listed 170
cmurdax82 - June 1, 2009
Ounces?
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
no fucking way is he 170
unless he’s wearing cement shoes
Deborah51 - June 1, 2009
He's about to lose some of that weight
Ozzie will be chewing a good part of his ass off after failing to sacrifice.
doctorK - June 1, 2009
So...have we lost yet?
pam5981 - June 1, 2009
Don't worry
Casilla will make sure of it.
Rhndasue - June 1, 2009
i love how everyone is positive..haha
mills16 - June 1, 2009
2-2, still.
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009
Gave away the DP
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
Oh man
Foss is so right. Come on, Santijairo.
ORthey - June 1, 2009
Fosse said
“Believe it or not. That is something you work on in spring training.”
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
Did he mention that the correct play is to let the ball drop
and then throw to FIRST? That’s the right play.
Nico - June 1, 2009
Yes. He said it was the catcher's job to call a signal
in that exact situation.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
Most people assume the right play is to throw to second,
but that allows the batter to reach first most of the time. Since the runner is frozen near first on a pop-up, if you let it drop and throw to first you get the batter out and then you have the runner easily in a rundown.
Nico - June 1, 2009
Most people are not very intelligent then :-)
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
"Easily in a run down"
…..may be an oxymoron with this team.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
now comes the stolen base
mills16 - June 1, 2009
"Believe it or not, that's a play that's usually worked on in spring training."
So’s batting and pitching, but that doesn’t make much of a difference for the A’s this season.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
Are we playing the A's now?
worldblee - June 1, 2009
If we were the game would never finish
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Carlos Gonzalez
Gonzalez is hitting .341/.425/.631 with nine homers and a PCL-leading 55 RBI in 179 at-bats at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season.
ryanmoser - June 1, 2009
I want to cry.
Rated-R Superstar - June 1, 2009
NOW you can start crying
worldblee - June 1, 2009
There's no crying in baseball.
Then again, this isn’t quite baseball.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
he's done fine in the minors
he had a good track record. he struggled in the majors with us last year, though (though i think that’s largely because we called him up too quickly). if he can replicate those numbers in the bigs, then yeah, we screwed that one up.
guy incognito - June 1, 2009
While some of it is because of the altitude, he's killing it.
Flashfire - June 1, 2009
If one guy is going to beat us
Let it be JD.
worldblee - June 1, 2009
Damn.
That ball was drilled into the ground and through…
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
Oh boy...
…here we go.
Coach Cleats - June 1, 2009
DP please DP please DP please DP please....
gigglingone - June 1, 2009
OMG, Yes!
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009
I second that emotion!
Coach Cleats - June 1, 2009
Santiago Springer or Russ Casilla
Hopefully it is none of them
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Way to jinx it.
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009
Sorry
But I think that meatball was thrown all on his own with no help from anyone
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Game.
Rated-R Superstar - June 1, 2009

ElQuesoCapitan - June 1, 2009

Ain’t no big surprise.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
CasiFAILla
doctorK - June 1, 2009
And
Casilla stays true to form.
Rhndasue - June 1, 2009
Well...
Let’s take comfort in the fact that we knew it was going to happen.
ORthey - June 1, 2009
Well, F!
lynnzgal - June 1, 2009
That was somehow pretty inevitable.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
un-f'n-believable
mills16 - June 1, 2009
Safe to say
Game over.
Flashfire - June 1, 2009
Oh yes
It’s well over
The game was over when it was tied at 2.
We only have 3 or 4 hitters in the lineup so that’s what you get will half a team
Trainman - June 1, 2009
Three hitters is a third of a team.
Just sayin’…
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
I know
Plenty of holes there isn’t there
Trainman - June 1, 2009
at least we're consistent even if
it’s consistently bad, awful, sucky
Deborah51 - June 1, 2009
walkoff baltimore chop - June 1, 2009
so who called 5-2?
cmurdax82 - June 1, 2009

I hate you, Casilla!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Technotofu - June 1, 2009

ryanmoser - June 1, 2009
I've run out of ways
To feel depressed. We are a truly bad baseball team, and there is no denying it.
I think I’m finally going to save myself some dollars and tell comcast “internet only please.”
ORthey - June 1, 2009
casilla is a gamer
cmurdax82 - June 1, 2009
That's okay!
This will give Geren career loss number #202. Keep them coming, Bobby!
Coach Cleats - June 1, 2009
Billy calling up satco again..
Jeff Gray…please come up for 1/3 IPs then I’ll send you back down
ryanmoser - June 1, 2009
By the way, earlier when I said I would have left Cahill in,
it’s exactly because I would have wanted Breslow available to face Thome here.
Nico - June 1, 2009
but to be fair to Geren
he also may have not held the game at 2 for this long either.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
True - but that's why you try to get 6+ out of your starter
The more you pitch your back-end relievers, the more this will happen.
Nico - June 1, 2009
Our guys have to hit Gavin Floyd.
Plain and simple. Our “young” pitching can’t be expected to do this much anyway.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
Yeah, getting shut down for 6 straight innings
by a guy with a 6.00+ ERA is not a terrific strategy.
Nico - June 1, 2009
Remember when everyone made fun of the Angels for only carrying
Darren Oliver? We are now that team.
ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
FIRE. GEREN. NOW.
and PLEASE send Casilla with him!
Rhndasue - June 1, 2009
Remember to tell him to take Springer as extra baggage.
ElQuesoCapitan - June 1, 2009

….for a serving of dried squid.
GreenNGoldSooner - June 1, 2009
So who we taking with the #1 pick next year?
Syphon - June 1, 2009
Washington's getting that
But we are looking solid for the #2 pick
jax a's fan - June 1, 2009
It don't matter
Beane will find a reason to pass on it whoever it is.
Trainman - June 1, 2009
We will take the guy who had 55 Walks and 25Ks but hit 240.

Everything is Geren's fault

ohtobe21likehuston - June 1, 2009
OH let's blame him anyway....
BERRYJO - June 1, 2009
exactly
mills16 - June 1, 2009
Agreed. Even the moves he made that I would have done a little differently made sense
His team didn’t give him a chance to mess it up.
Nico - June 1, 2009

Umpire wants to go back to his hotel and watch the PPV porn.
