Tonight’s update is going to spotlight 4 players, one from each of the A’s full season minor league teams. I used a process of selection slightly more ordered than merely throwing darts at a wall covered in prospects names… yes I chose to not piss off my wife by putting holes in the wall, my couch is very comfy but I’d rather sleep in my bed. Basically, these 4 struck my fancy in some way or another, either by performance or by seeing their name pop up in discussions on AN.
Today’s test subjects are Sacramento River Cat (AAA) Vin Mazzaro, Midland Rockhound (AA) Josh Donaldson, Stockton Port (High-A) Ben Hornbeck and Kane County Cougar (Low-A) Petey Paramore. All stats are as of 5/24/09… ‘cause that’s when I started researching/writing this and I don’t feel like re-doing the math to account for today’s performances.

I decided to write about Mazzaro because he’s currently sporting a K/9 rate almost identical to what he had in
In Mazzaro’s first 4 starts he allowed 13 hits and 11 walks while striking out 15 in 20 IP. Hits allowed can be fluky for a pitcher but the number of guys he walks is almost all on him. In Mazzaro’s next 5 appearances (4 GS, 1 relief appearance when a re-habbing Santiago Casilla pitched the 1st inning) saw him give up 25 hits and 5 walks while striking out 23 in 30.2 IP. Like I said, hits allowed can be a bit flukish and in 1 GS from the 2nd batch he gave up 12 hits in 4 IP. 9 of those hits were on the ground and 3 never left the infield, so there’s some reason to chalk it up as having some bad luck that day.
What does this mean in the near future?
The recent 5 games sample is too small to offer any definitive conclusions as to if Mazzaro is ready for the Show, but it makes a compelling argument that he’s finally made the necessary adjustments to be successful at AAA. I’d like to see another 5-7 starts that feature an extremely low walk total before believing he’s ready for the next challenge.
Donaldson has fully recovered from an abysmal April, hitting 333/442/528 with 4 doubles and a homerun in his last 10 games. He’s been a workhorse for the Rockhounds, catching 31 of 43 games and also making 3 starts at 3B. (And no, Donaldson does not appear to be in consideration for a full time gig at 3B!) He’s been particularly effective against the running game, gunning down 18 of 33 attempts (55%) and adding an extra 4 pickoffs.
There is a downside to his aggressiveness with the arm. He’s made 5 throwing errors; at least 2 appear to have been pickoff attempts. The big question with Donaldson’s defense is his mobility behind the plate, as last year he allowed 18 Passed Balls in 94 games catching. This year he’s done a little better, but 4 PB in 31 games is still too many. This is something he needs to continue to improve on or it could cause him to be moved out from behind the plate.
As for the long term, Donaldson seems to be creating an interesting dilemma for the A’s. If he can clean up his footwork behind the plate, Donaldson has the bat and arm to profile as a big league starting Catcher, possibly as early as Opening Day 2010. Kurt Suzuki has established himself in
Hornbeck’s
Does this mean the A’s have another potential pitching stud on their hands?
Not at all.
Hornbeck posted strong numbers in
Do I think he can do that? Absolutely, I just wanted to talk about him now in order to stave off unfounded hype from the
Apparently Petey is his legal name. Yech.
Anyways, Paramore had a rough and virtually non-existent April for
The problem with Paramore is that while he controls the strike zone well (15/12 BB/K) he has shown virtually no power, with 2 doubles and a HR to his power resume thus far. Scouts think his bat is slow and so far his pro numbers suggest another Cliff Pennington… a good back-up with switch hitting ability but probably not starting material. At this point it’s hard to project Paramore as anyone’s starting big league Catcher.
That’s it.
Go home already!

Great post Grover
I have a tough time believing that any sane person would even think of rushing Mazzaro to the bigs before he is 100% ready.
Kallus - May 25, 2009
mazzaro might be called up this weekend
for the rangers double header…dont know if gallagher/eveland recent starts change that plan.
Asfan4ever723 - May 25, 2009
It probably does.
Rated-R Superstar - May 25, 2009
For a pitcher's MLB debut, I'd avoid Arlington like the plague
Kallus - May 25, 2009
June 2nd?
May 29: Edgar Gonzalez & Josh Outman
May 30: Brett Anderson
May 31: Dallas Braden
June 1: Trevor Cahill
June 2: Vin Mazzaro??? (Send down Gonzalez?)
Colorado Fan - May 26, 2009
What happens to Outman???
Vegas Ace - May 26, 2009
He follows Mazzaro, presumably.
Nico - May 26, 2009
Paramore's line is Kennedy-esque :D
Good writeup on Mazzaro, and I agree with keeping him down longer.
mikev - May 25, 2009
Paramore = Kendall?
That’s what it sounds like to me.
NateHST - May 25, 2009
I can't take anyone named Petey as hard-nosed and gritty.
danmerqury - May 25, 2009
i could see them sucking though
travdog6 - May 25, 2009
Paramore
I thought his first name was Preston and Petey was just a nickname?
DeJay - May 26, 2009
paramore
seems like a healthy, less power version of landon powell.
At the time of the 08 draft, A’s had suzuki at the mlb level but not much else from that position. I believe they were still taking it slow with powell from another knee injury. Recker struggled in AA and had not shown to be a good defensive player. They had not drafted any catchers high in the draft in recent seasons. The Donaldson trade had yet to be done. I
2007: Matth Smith 14th, Dustly Napolean 19th
2006: Mike Ambort (unsigned) , Jake Smith 21st (retired)
2005: Recker 18th, 19th Rivera
Asfan4ever723 - May 25, 2009
and jeremy brown retired unexpectedly
rktse - May 26, 2009
Paramore
isn’t that some crappy band?
jahs34 - May 26, 2009
Please, please don't call up Mazzaro
I’m not at all convinced he would pitch better than Gallagher, Gio, or Eveland. Add to that the possibility of ruining his confidence. Wait until the A’s give up on the season (meaning Holliday trade) before even considering it.
vignette17 - May 26, 2009
yes
Future Ed - May 26, 2009
good stuff, grover
I also would prefer to wait on calling up Mazzaro.
OaklandSi - May 26, 2009
Leave Mazzaro down
Keep him in AAA to get more time. I’d want at least 1/2 a season from him at AAA before a jump. Let him get comfortable/mature in Sacto and then look for that midseason slip (provided he continues like his past 5 starts).
We have plenty of options for pitching right now – not all that great, but options – and we need to cultivate the talent we will hopefully be relying on over the next 6 years.
Great to hear about Donaldson. I love Kurt, but hopefully he can be turned for an MLB ready 3B.
ru155 - May 26, 2009
Or....
Since Donaldson played 3rd base in college, they could give him an extended look there maybe?
hero66 - May 26, 2009
The A's should only bring up Mazzaro if it is to stay in the Majors.
They shouldn’t bring him up just to make 1 start in Arlington and the send him down. Let Gio,Eveland or Gallagher make that start. Let him continue to dominate at AAA first and then bring him up towards the end of July. The A’s understand they rushed both Cahill and Anderson.
Tbone 1 - May 26, 2009
I completely agree with this.
Same goes for Gio, Gallagher, or any other prospect pitcher. They come up, they should stay up in the rotation for at least a handful of starts, not immediately sent down after getting lit up once.
Blicks - May 26, 2009
I have to believe that they would keep him up
Mazzaro is not on the 40 man roster yet, I believe. So they would have to clear a roster space.
Zonis - May 26, 2009
I'm sure someone is ready for the 60 day right now
Future Ed - May 26, 2009
Thanks again grover!
I always enjoy reading this.
kaweahkaweah - May 26, 2009
Thanks Grover
Your posts are some of the best on AN these days.
richwol1 - May 26, 2009
I think Donaldson forcing the A's hand at the C position is a good problem to have,
but I would hate to see Suzuki go if Donaldson played that well. I think Suzuki calls a hell of a game and is a good-hitting catcher.
If we could get a good 3B in a deal that sent Donaldson somewhere, that would be okay with me though.
dtownmbrown - May 26, 2009
+1
I want Suzuki to stay
DDroney - May 26, 2009
I would rather have Donaldson than Suzuki
if Donaldson can call a good game as well, but hit a lot better.
Zonis - May 26, 2009
I love Donaldson.
I think he puts up a 800OPS in the bigs.
Syphon - May 26, 2009
The thing that works is if Donaldson can also play 3B
Then he can be the backup Catcher and backup 3B. The A’s need to have players on the team who don’t just play 1B and DH
Eastbayjim - May 26, 2009
the question is, can he handle a staff as well as Suzuki?
dtownmbrown - May 26, 2009
Gallaghers new dew
Nobody noticed……
granja - May 26, 2009
New dew?

granja - May 26, 2009
do you have a pic or a link?
stm72 - May 26, 2009
Why not try Donaldson at 3B?
Grrrr. Defies all logic, especially with the dearth of good 3B prospects that actually have a good shot at sticking at 3B (sorry Brett Wallace), and most being the elite ones on struggling teams (Moustakas, Alvarez, etc.)
Blicks - May 26, 2009
There was some talk of it.
mikev - May 26, 2009
Well he has been tried there a few times
But I certainly don’t think it defies all logic to keep Donaldson at catcher. His bat is great for a C but profiles as average at 3B, he is much more valuable as a catching prospect. I think it’s pretty logical to resist devaluing your prospects just to fill a need.
He may eventually have to move if he is going to play in Oakland but for now it’s probably the best course of action to have him retain as much value as possible. Smart organizations can trade good catching prospects for good 3B prospects rather than take their good catching prospects and making them mediocre 3B prospects.
OkayJay81 - May 26, 2009
Is it too early to give up on these players
buck-25, 08 shouldve really been his rookie yr, but injuries to other players and an impressive spring pushed his progression curve and skipped AAA
barton- 23, very streaky. If you remember in 07 outside of a dominating couple months stretch, he wasnt too impressive in AAA. after a great september, some were anointing him the next great A’s player which seemed premature
IMO putting all that pressure on barton/buck to start that 08 season killed their confidence
gio/gallagher- both 23, They were considered 2 ofthe better mlb ready type pitchers in the minors. Gio top 25 mlb prospect, Gallagher sparkling minor league trackrecord that reached the majors quickly. Once again, both were put in a pressure situation to pick up the slack of a harden/blanton. The best choice might have been further progression in AAA for all of 08 and part of 09 and then give them a chance
Sweeney- 23, had 2 lackluster seasons in AAA w/ white sox. solid player overall, but seems A’s think he might progress to being better
cunningham 23, called up end of 08 w/ a total of 76 ab’s at the AAA level.
patterson 25/26, has produced at the AAA level going back to 06. basically stuck in the same situation as Cubs before. Maybe needs an extended chance / some other team
Sometimes it seems that overall A’s are conservative with promotions, but they were aggressive w/ all these players. Its possible they wanted to see a quicker return from those trades. Instead it has involved multiple call ups between AAA/MLB and inconsistent playing time. You would think these players still in the early to mid 20s could make up a pretty decent future team, but instead their struggles has allowed other players to surpass them and looking towards the next wave prospects. You would hope that A’s get lucky with a couple of the above players turning into above avg mlb players.
Asfan4ever723 - May 26, 2009
grover,do you recall last year if AN picked up on...
Andrew Bailey and his potential?
Notwithstanding his last outing, he’ s been the brightest spot out of the bullpen. I was just curious if you saw this coming.
So much discussion centered around the prospects from last year’s trades that I suspect he flew under the radar a bit.
Gerard - May 26, 2009
Searching AN
for Bailey and 2008 finds he was mentioned in grovers posts as well as taj’s. none of the masses seemed to comment on him.
Future Ed - May 26, 2009
IIRC, he was a bit of a surprise to make the team out of ST this year.
But he did get quite a bit better after converting to reliever.
mikev - May 26, 2009
Yeah
NOone thought about it at the start of ST.
He relieved half the time last year in AA. Was ita plan to convert him?
Future Ed - May 26, 2009
I think he was converted when he couldn't cut it as a starter
But only going for a few innings at most let him ramp up to 94-95mph.
mikev - May 26, 2009
Hmmm
I always find it interesting when someone with his ability progresses as well as he did, coming up from AA. It’s one thing when it’s a hyped up prospect who was picked fairly high, it’s another when you hear comments out of ST that indicated that the prospect caught the attention of the coaching staff.
Lately, the higher profile pitchers (mostly starters) have not necessarily dominated to the expectation that we thought they would. Rather, they are performing at the mediocre vis a vis meteoric ascent we saw with Hudson Mulder and Zito.
It is easier for a reliever to establish themselves because his exposure is much less than a starter and in this case, Bailey was converted. Let’s hope that Mazzaro, whom grover highlights today, will have more success than our other two rookie starters.

Why is Rajai Davis in there?
Trainman - May 26, 2009
imagine if hannahan, crosby and davis all played the full game
stm72 - May 26, 2009
That's actually not a terrible lineup against a LHP
At least Cabrera is leading off against a LHP and Sweeney is out of the lineup. In fact, you know what? For the first time all year, I can say that might be the order I’d put those 9 in if I were managing, though only because he’s so sizzling hot I might switch Cabrera and Kennedy straight up.
Nico - May 26, 2009
I agree with that
Switching Kennedy with Cabrera
Trainman - May 26, 2009
So you would still have Raj Davis on your 40 man roster?
DaSwinginA's - May 26, 2009
Now Davis and Hannahan both in
Forget about that inning they both bat in.,
Trainman - May 26, 2009
oh my god!
Why does Rajai Davis still have a roster spot!
mrod - May 26, 2009
Cool! Rajai Davis is Nomar's designated calves for tonight's game
franks a lot - May 26, 2009
I saw that too and just shook my head and sighed-
It seems like any chemistry brewed is quickly extinguished…
Whatever happened to ‘hey that worked, lets try it again’ instead we’ll just go back to a lineup that’s been ineffective all year.
