I can't get over how many pitchers we pick up off the scrap heap
and then immediately throw them into the fire… and quite often. I mean these are guys with 5 and 6+ ERA’s while our guys that arrive from Sacto just rot in the bullpen and get sent back down after a cup of coffee. Strange.
the argument for him is that with consisten playing time, he would be a solid baseball player. i know he looks the exact opposite of promising, but i’m not gonna give up on him this quick
I don’t like players as young as him being left on the bench in the Majors. Either play him here or play him in Sacramento, but play him somewhere. Let the bench be reserved for vets who aren’t expected to do more them pitch in once in a while.
I am in the minority here but Beane should leave the A’s and play with his soccer team fulltime and take Geren with him. Rajai Davis and jack Hannahan can learn to play soccer
you’re including the minor league system that BB has constructed? the same minor league system that is ranked as high as number 2 by some sites? ya the team sucks. oh well. it’s part of being a low budget team. but come on.
let’s give up on cunningham/cahill/anderson/buck/barton. it’s true that NOT EVERY PROSPECT WORKS OUT. and the fist four i just named have had less than half a year of time with the big club. oh ya and you didn’t include sooo many good prospects in that list. please.
Dude. You are crazy if you think that things are going well.
This ain’t the late 90’s at all and their philosophy is all over the map. What is the plan? Old guys, young guys, pitching, defense, on-base %, power… because I don’t see any philosophy and way too many holes.
I think it is and always will be what's best for building a winning team,
Hewent with power and obp when that was undervalued by the league, then once the leauge caught up he moved on. I don’t think there is a type of team he is trying to build, nor should there be. he just needs to go for what is the most valuable.
your Geren postgame press conference before it happens
“Casilla just made one bad pitch, otherwise he was lights out…”
“We hit 4, count them 4, homers tonight….”
“Jason Giambi is so awesome….”
“Edgar Gonzalez is obviously going to be Rookie of the Year, if not outright Cy Young winner in the AL…”
“Don’t think of this as the worst start in Oakland A’s history, think of it as rebuilding forever….”
Hey it would be different if we were talking about a platoon guy
but we are talking about a key position on a baseball team. If there was an option available within the organization than I would understand him standing pat. I just don’t see one so that means it’s time to get “taken” on a deal, if necessary.
Devine is out and it’s like Geren sticks his thumb up his butt and takes the concept of ‘no closer’ literally. MAKE someone the closer, MAKE someone the setup guy, and give roles to middle relievers.
Instead, he just throws guys out there willy-nilly, leaving absolutely no room for matchups. When’s the last time he brought in a LOOGY to face a tough lefty in a tight game? He can’t, because he throws his left handers out for an entire inning.
It’s like he just throws uniform numbers up in the air and whichever one comes down pitches the next 2 innings. With a young starting staff managing the pen becomes crucial to the entire season and this is Geren’s biggest weakness – and it shows.
at least 10 losses this season can be put on Geren and another 10 losses on having players who do not belong in the majors so that goes on Beane. So you have 20 losses on Beane for putting a product on the field with too many holes
Yet they always call for every managers head. First Howe, then Macha, now Geren. Always there fault, never Beanes. Seriously, if you were in Geren’s position tonight, what would you do? There wasn’t one pitcher who could get outs.
He was sick and I’m sure that played a big part in the examples you’re using. But he worked on some things a bit more today and looked very good tonight. That’s what you base it on: the moment.
If he gets through the 8th then you have options for the 9th whether that’s Bailey or not.
Sometimes you just have to tip your cap, so I’d like to congratulate Bob Geren on doing a wonderful job for the D-backs today. Taking out Edgar Gonzalez after throwing only 88 pitches, taking Cust out in the 7th, not sending Ziggy out for the 8th after a quick 7th, and taking out Breslow and putting in Casilla when Breslow had been shutting the D-backs down. All genius moves. Wonderful performance by Geren today, doing his best to help the Diamondbacks win. Great job, Bob.
And he tops it off by not PH’ing Croz and leaving it up to Hannanananahhhananahan. Way to finish it off, Geren.
Who among us didn’t KNOW hannahan was going to hit into a DP? Seriously. We all knew it. Every A’s fan knew he would swing at the first pitch and hit into a tailor-made DP. We all knew it. And he did it.
Of all the years i've been watching this team I have NEVER
been as frustrated with them as I am at this point. I am DONE watching them for awhile. Never thought I would say that, but my heart can’t take this shit anymore. SADASSCHOKEARTISTS@2009ATHLETICS.COM…..email me and let me know what we get for Holliday in 3 weeks. I’m out.

I wish we could end the Bill Beane experiment.
There isn’t one person in that bullpen than get anyone out. And this is like the worst offense in the lead besides the A’s.

Poor Kurt.

They may be playing in Vegas with Steve Philips as the GM and Bobby Valentine as the manager….
But then again, they actually couldn’t be any worse.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
+1,000,000
Damned right it is.
I am in the minority here but Beane should leave the A’s and play with his soccer team fulltime and take Geren with him. Rajai Davis and jack Hannahan can learn to play soccer
Trainman - May 23, 2009
The quakes have been in last place the two years he's been in control.
Why does that not surprise me?
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
you realize when you say organization
you’re including the minor league system that BB has constructed? the same minor league system that is ranked as high as number 2 by some sites? ya the team sucks. oh well. it’s part of being a low budget team. but come on.
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
You mean the minor league with the great players of...
Barton, Buck, Cunningham, Cargon(nvm), Cahill, and Anderson. The same guys that all FAIL.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
ya man
let’s give up on cunningham/cahill/anderson/buck/barton. it’s true that NOT EVERY PROSPECT WORKS OUT. and the fist four i just named have had less than half a year of time with the big club. oh ya and you didn’t include sooo many good prospects in that list. please.
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
Like I have said
Minny is a low budget team.
They do better than us
The same minor league system that is and has been starving of 3rd basemen and SS’s
Trainman - May 23, 2009
Dude. You are crazy if you think that things are going well.
This ain’t the late 90’s at all and their philosophy is all over the map. What is the plan? Old guys, young guys, pitching, defense, on-base %, power… because I don’t see any philosophy and way too many holes.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 23, 2009
His philosophy is the reason we suck
its outfuckingdated
Trainman - May 23, 2009
we made the playoffs in 2006...

travdog6 - May 23, 2009
I think thats also the last playoff appearance in 6 years.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
But it was the fifth in the last ten.
LoneStranger - May 23, 2009
with a tiny budget
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
I see your point in regards to this year
but the team is still in complete rebuild mode. Signed a few vets this year, didn’t spent much money on them. pretty low risk.
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
I'm just wondering what they are trying to build.
You can’t answer the question because it’s never been stated and it has been in the past.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 23, 2009
ummm...
i’m gonna go with a playoff team on this one. don’t really know why he would “state” what they are trying to build….
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
He has in the past.
For awhile it was power and on-base %. Then he built a defensive team when he had no hitters. Now?
ohtobe21likehuston - May 23, 2009
I think it is and always will be what's best for building a winning team,
Hewent with power and obp when that was undervalued by the league, then once the leauge caught up he moved on. I don’t think there is a type of team he is trying to build, nor should there be. he just needs to go for what is the most valuable.
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
Building a playoff team is not an organizational philosophy either.
Every team wants to build a playoff team but they create a plan of attack that gives them the best chance.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 23, 2009
No jokes
No quips. No sarcasm. I am just depressed. This team makes me sad. Jesus.

ohtobe21likehuston - May 23, 2009
Why did he not take at least one pitch there. Come on.

pam5981 - May 23, 2009
Geren has no concept of managing a bullpen
Devine is out and it’s like Geren sticks his thumb up his butt and takes the concept of ‘no closer’ literally. MAKE someone the closer, MAKE someone the setup guy, and give roles to middle relievers.
Instead, he just throws guys out there willy-nilly, leaving absolutely no room for matchups. When’s the last time he brought in a LOOGY to face a tough lefty in a tight game? He can’t, because he throws his left handers out for an entire inning.
It’s like he just throws uniform numbers up in the air and whichever one comes down pitches the next 2 innings. With a young starting staff managing the pen becomes crucial to the entire season and this is Geren’s biggest weakness – and it shows.

to be contracted the Nats are horrible and no one in D.C. cares.
sirbed - May 23, 2009
No one in Oakland seems to care either.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
I think you're confusing not being good at baseball, and caring
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
is this a joke?
we have one of the top rates minor league systems.
travdog6 - May 23, 2009
Could be worse
Could have lost to the Giants?
AMIRITE?
Hit4TheCycle - May 23, 2009
Oh we will do that soon enough!
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
Oh that will be the end of it all.
cyke17 - May 23, 2009
at least Nico will be happy.
Leopold Bloom - May 23, 2009
He's traitorous.
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
preaching to the converted, sister.
Leopold Bloom - May 23, 2009
Can we officially stop calling Billy Beane a genius?
I think that ship sailed a long time ago now. He’s made numerous questionable moves to get us to this point.
AsFanInIowa - May 23, 2009
That ship sailed 5 years ago IMO
Trainman - May 23, 2009
10 games under .500
at least 10 losses this season can be put on Geren and another 10 losses on having players who do not belong in the majors so that goes on Beane. So you have 20 losses on Beane for putting a product on the field with too many holes
Trainman - May 23, 2009
No one wants to put blame on Beane.
Yet they always call for every managers head. First Howe, then Macha, now Geren. Always there fault, never Beanes. Seriously, if you were in Geren’s position tonight, what would you do? There wasn’t one pitcher who could get outs.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
Umm... There was pitchers in the game getting outs...
He just took them out.
cyke17 - May 23, 2009
Ziggy had a 1-2-3 7th
Flashfire - May 23, 2009
exactly.
cyke17 - May 23, 2009
For once this month.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
He's also been ILL for the last three weeks.
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
He's had to work on his mechanics again, they said
Flashfire - May 23, 2009
Meaning he was going to be anything but consistent.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
Except when you have a 1-2-3 inning and get the ground balls your success depends on...
…there’s a pretty good reason to figure it can be done again the next inning.
Flashfire - May 23, 2009
Come on.
The guy gets shelled in just about every outing. He hasn’t pitched in a month, and you expect him to be perfect while going multiple innings?
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
Exaggerate much?
Flashfire - May 23, 2009
It's called pessimism, and he certainly has caught it.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
Not really.
In 7 starts this month
May 7 – 2er
May 10- 2er
May 15 – 1er
May 21-1 er
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
I know he talks on An and is in your avatar, but this isn't last year.
And even if he gets through the 8th, who gets through the 9th? Bailey?
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
I don't care about last year relative to this
He was sick and I’m sure that played a big part in the examples you’re using. But he worked on some things a bit more today and looked very good tonight. That’s what you base it on: the moment.
If he gets through the 8th then you have options for the 9th whether that’s Bailey or not.
Flashfire - May 23, 2009
One or two runs certainly wouldn't have hurt us as much as four.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
Not that it matters
But I never called for Howe to be fired and I was ticked off when Macha was let go.
sirbed - May 23, 2009
The only pitcher who really honestly sucked ass
and couldn’t get outs was Springer.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
Sometimes you just have to tip your cap, so I’d like to congratulate Bob Geren on doing a wonderful job for the D-backs today.
Way to finish it off, Geren.
hero66 - May 23, 2009
Don't forger to give credit to the heavy air...
for keeping the A’s balls out of the stands.
KMoAsFan - May 23, 2009
the 2nd game back from a road trip is usually where you come out flat.
I thought the guys played hard today and I liked their effort.
Yeah Bob but no one likes your effort EVER.
ohtobe21likehuston - May 23, 2009
it is time for the
FIRESALE
:)
i wont be there cuz the A’s arent selling anything I wanna buy.
supermarc589 - May 23, 2009
The worst part is:
Who among us didn’t KNOW hannahan was going to hit into a DP? Seriously. We all knew it. Every A’s fan knew he would swing at the first pitch and hit into a tailor-made DP. We all knew it. And he did it.
ORthey - May 23, 2009
And Croz is sitting in the dugout thinking
“I could have done THAT”
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
Probably would have, too
Flashfire - May 23, 2009
Except Croz has that 1/200th of a chance that he'll hit the ball in such a strange way
it’d end up being a force at 2nd and the run from 3rd would score.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
Ulitmately tying the game.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
I didn't know it.
iglew - May 23, 2009
Yeah me either.
He hit a pretty nice looking double earlier.
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
I guess we're just not true fans.
iglew - May 23, 2009
true fans are always negative
duh
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
Of all the years i've been watching this team I have NEVER
been as frustrated with them as I am at this point. I am DONE watching them for awhile. Never thought I would say that, but my heart can’t take this shit anymore. SADASSCHOKEARTISTS@2009ATHLETICS.COM…..email me and let me know what we get for Holliday in 3 weeks. I’m out.
JPShark - May 23, 2009
word
If for nothing else, I need to take a break for my blood pressure. And I’m 28.
ORthey - May 23, 2009
Shields throws the ball away
runner on 3rd (winning run) 1 out for For Ddgers
Trainman - May 23, 2009
That Dodger rookie like A's hitters do 90 percent of time
took 3 fastballs down the middle, the last two with 5 infielders in
Trainman - May 23, 2009
Everyone's favorite: The Bob Geren post-loss canned optimism interview.
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
Nice... Geren making excuses for springer.
cyke17 - May 23, 2009
He really didn't.
He said the hits came with 2 strikes, and he couldn’t finish them off.
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
Did he just say that Springer was just unlucky tonight??
wacchampions - May 23, 2009
basically.
cyke17 - May 23, 2009
Geren's ass loves talking.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 23, 2009
What a fucking joke
Zieg pitches the 7th… Bailey comes in bases loaded with a 4 run lead… Is this some ass-backwards shit or what?
Porcupine - May 23, 2009
GAME RECAP IS UP
Here
Nico - May 23, 2009
At least Mindy and Shooty are having a good time tonight.
pam5981 - May 23, 2009
I really believe that the loss and many more is on the Manager
Horrendous in game management is killing the squad.
