9th Inning drama thread (to be open for potential extras, of course)...
The A's, having never led in the game, are now knotted at 3-3 with the Rays, following an RBI single from Orlando Cabrera that plated Bobby Crosby. Hannahan, unclear what to do in his rare appearance on the bases, was unable to extend the lead to 4-3, so we head to the 9th frame with the game up for grabs.
Braden, though he pitched well, has left the game, and will gather a much-desired no-decision.

Wreckonized - May 21, 2009

Wreckonized - May 21, 2009
I'm feeling GIDP for some reason
…that’s not a good feeling
fruitattack - May 21, 2009
so if Rajai doesn't steal here, in Holliday's AB,
that makes Geren a bad manager, right?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Geren must be a good manager.
LoneStranger - May 21, 2009
I didn't make that contention, now.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Not if Holliday hits a gapper that Rajai scores on
That Cust wouldn’ thave.

Oakland Oakland!
fruitattack - May 21, 2009
Dammit!
We can never make it easy.
Joey C. - May 21, 2009
With one out, you have to go halfway on that
With Rajai’s speed, he’s coming around from second on a two-out hit anyway just in case Upton catches that and he has to retreat to second.
Unbelievable.
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
BJ lost the ball and it hit the base of the wall
again, retard
ryanmoser - May 21, 2009
Lame x 100
The A’s and the Mets have to be the two dumbest teams these days.
vr, Xei
Xeifrank - May 21, 2009
Honestly, if that alone doesn't get
Rajai Davis released and Mike Gallego fired, what will? A ball never caught, hit 400 feet to dead center, and Davis was running from second on the pitch. And doesn’t score.
Nico - May 21, 2009
Rajai doesn't do anything well but run fast.
He doesn’t run well, mind you. Just fast.
Nate - May 21, 2009
Because he went back to the base. Dunno what Gallego was telling him.
Flashfire - May 21, 2009

The players aren’t friggin’ coached.
Vacafan - May 21, 2009
No,
that was a complete moron running the bases there.
The ONLY time we let him in any more is to run and he can’t do that.

This just in: A'S MOVE RAJAI DAVIS TO 60 DAY DL
OAKLAND — A’s Outfielder Rajai Davis has been placed on the 60-Day DL, retroactive to May 21st, following an MRI which discovered a major detachment of the frontal lobe from his medulla oblongata. Doctors claim the injury has been seen only once before in the previous 20 years, hearkening back to the famous Jeremy Giambi case.
louismg - May 21, 2009

if we hold this down
this small 3 game streak might do some good to our team’s confidence
Wreckonized - May 21, 2009
So the right play for Rajai in that situation
is to go to 3rd and stand there. If it’s caught, go back to second, if not you can walk home. It’s pretty simple.
Nico - May 21, 2009
The right play is to be far enough off of 2nd base that you can score if the ball lands.

cityplANner - May 21, 2009
Let's face it, though
The A’s just got what they deserved. The way Crosby hit, the way Davis ran the bases, they gave away 3 runs. And you don’t walk the leadoff man with a two-run lead.

LOL
thesteve9x - May 21, 2009
so...if Rajai doesn't make the baserunning error,
we do score more in the top of the ninth, right?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
No guarantee of that based on how it played out
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
of course there's no guarantee of it.
we’re dealing with what-ifs….
but they scored the second with a walk, huh?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Does Giambi score from second on Kennedy's hit?
Maybe. But I think the A’s are going to make it a moot point.
alox - May 21, 2009
true.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Yeah, but who knows where people would've been if Davis scored on Giambi's hit?
Holliday’s probably at third and Giambi at second, and on Kennedy’s single Holliday would’ve scored instead of Davis. Maybe Giambi’s held at third so Sweeney’s walk would’ve loaded the bases instead of bringing Holliday in there. Or he might have scored, or might have been thrown out.
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
Yup, GameCast crashing was probably a good thing
Which is why I am not surprised…
…and I will be doing something else and hoping, just hoping the A’s continue adding runs

Only since coming down with the plague
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
He was pretty horrible in the WBC too, right?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
I don't make anything of the WBC
Games were infrequent and practice time sketchy from what I understand. Before he got sick, Ziegler was pitching very well this season. He’s much more hittable than what he showed last year but he’s always going to be someone who has to rely on the defense to make plays, along with where the ball is hit. He’s not going to overpower anyone like Bailey can.
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
Because Geren's been horrible too and he plays every day

I’d like to keep him for spots where they need a double play, but it also sets up failing a lot and letting a lot of inherited runners advance or score if he can’t get it. I don’t like the idea of hoping so much that he can get two on one pitch that if he doesn’t it’s akin to failure.
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
so who comeso ut for the 8th, Weurtz?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Breslow?
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
that works.
save AB for the 9th…he had an inning’s worth…
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
I mean, I know Breslow's the new guy...
…but if Geren’s just saving him for a lefty, nah.
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
Maybe.
But I like to think I would have pulled him after the lead off walk. That alone should have told Geren that he’s been overused.
alox - May 21, 2009
Thanks to Hannahan, Crosby, Davis and Geren
along with Ziggy pitching like a pile of crap of late.
Ziggy is a shell of his former self and cannot get lefties out.
This team is quite sickening for the most part.
Trainman - May 21, 2009
A split in TB is all well and good
but we should have had 3 out of 4.
PortlandPachyderm - May 21, 2009
I agree
3/4 was well within reach…
fruitattack - May 21, 2009
Yeah, a split is better than getting swept
worldblee - May 21, 2009
I'm going to put on the end of last night's game
and pretend this never happened.
worldblee - May 21, 2009
Well the A's come home to play the equally crappy Diamondbacks this weekend....
If they can’t get some wins against that team then I give up!!
wacchampions - May 21, 2009
Equally crappy but currently tragic.
The A’s don’t even have that.
GreenNGoldSooner - May 21, 2009
at least the rangers lost
Asfan4ever723 - May 21, 2009
Is Haren pitching against us this weekend?
That should be fun. Or not.
PortlandPachyderm - May 21, 2009
Saturday.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
I believe so.
lynnzgal - May 21, 2009
My hope for the AZ series
Haren no hitter
Byrnes hits for cycle
Asfan4ever723 - May 21, 2009
Im so sick of the A's fuck them. The deserve to lose every game and be put out of baseball due to lack of interest from fans and people across america.
Fancy - May 21, 2009
small sample size?
I tried.
PortlandPachyderm - May 21, 2009
Wow, that's some serious hate there.
iglew - May 21, 2009
I now root against the A's just so the have to get rid of them
Fancy - May 21, 2009
Whatever tickles your fancy.
LoneStranger - May 21, 2009
you're creeping me out, dude.
why don’t you take the next couple plays off?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Bobby Crosby, is that you?
worldblee - May 21, 2009
What the game comes down to is that the A's
should have scored 8-9 runs. Crosby failed twice to make basic contact, once with the infield back and another time swinging through two BP fastballs with bases loaded, one out. Davis’ mistake was huge, because two runs would have scored on that play alone, with Kennedy and Sweeney coming up (singled, walked respectively as it turned out) and the inning spiraling out of control. Cabrera gave away the last out in the 8th against a pitcher who had nothing and wasn’t getting anyone out.
Nico - May 21, 2009
team loss.
together with the bullpen. It’s too bad too—sounds like it was a pretty gutsy start by Cahill.
Tampa Bay’s no joke, tho—to take two from them is really something. They play hard, and I thought we might get swept after Detroit.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Braden.
PortlandPachyderm - May 21, 2009
Braden, right...my bad.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
I may be mistaken, but
I thought Braden was throwing.
MrMoneyBaller - May 21, 2009
I wasn't here for almost all of that
I was stuck in sign hell.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
No worries...
I just thought my memory was going.
MrMoneyBaller - May 21, 2009
Crosby is the one person that really disappointed me..
I know it’s nothing new, but to watch two fastballs (the only pitch he knows how to “hit” anymore) and then hack AGAIN at breaking stuff to no avail just reminded me (as if I needed a reminder) why after this season he won’t be playing baseball.
MrMoneyBaller - May 21, 2009
Why would anybody even want to play for this shithole team?
Fancy - May 21, 2009
We got the point
Flashfire - May 21, 2009
agrd.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
i don't know seems pretty vague to me
ak_A - May 21, 2009
lol.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Take a 'lude, Dude.
I suggest you log off before your negativity becomes relentless.
iglew - May 21, 2009
At the end of the day?
To make millions of dollars.
PortlandPachyderm - May 21, 2009
May I suggest
Taking a nap? Seems like a case of the crankies.
MrMoneyBaller - May 21, 2009
lol
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
I will say this for the A's....
they played a competitive game. I can take this a lot easier than I can the romping Detroit gave them. But Geren needs to be put on notice that his job is at stake. And Davis needs to fly back from Tampa commercially.
alox - May 21, 2009
Yep!
lynnzgal - May 21, 2009
right on.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009

Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Have one for me too
:D
MrMoneyBaller - May 21, 2009
I recommend Tequila....
and firearms. And lots of posters of A’s players.
alox - May 21, 2009
don't forget the manager
dtownmbrown - May 21, 2009
you know,
I think that asshat’s actually on one of the months of my calendar.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
It sure as hell isn't October.
alox - May 21, 2009
hahaha
dtownmbrown - May 21, 2009
I'd rather have players that were traded before the regular season started
dtownmbrown - May 21, 2009
Oh I got those too.
It’s a calendar of fail.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Cool.
iglew - May 21, 2009
NO we wont and thats why im mad. Happy Friday enjoy the long weekend. LoL nice Alox
Fancy - May 21, 2009
Just make sure you don't place the posters
over the studs inside the wall. One, because no player on the A’s should be mistaken for a stud, and two, spackle will cover the little round holes as long as you don’t splinter the 2X4’s. Don’t really want to get into how I know all this.
alox - May 21, 2009
sounds expensive, regardless.
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Crosby and Hannahan left 14 on base
DFA both of them
Trainman - May 21, 2009
14?!
Seriously?
Leopold Bloom - May 21, 2009
Am I trippin'?
Are we the AAAA’s? I really feel the decisions toward the end of the game were something of a minor league team. Did Geren manage the Rivercats? Maybe in the minor leagues it is common practice to have a different closer several times a week. For some reason, pitchers need to be told what role they have or everything goes to shit. There Geren goes again getting all happy thinking he can put anyone in in any situation. Bailey is great. Is he your middle relief or your closer? Brad Ziegler did good enough to save the game pretty quietly yesterday, and I believe would’ve been good enough today. Instead, Geren turns it into some minor-league type competition for a closing job and we lose the game. I’m pretty confident Ziegler is great when he pitches in closing situations, and he sucks when he doesn’t. Evidently, the same is with Bailey in mid-relief. It’s to bad you just can’t pawn them around like the minor leagues and that there really are consequences.
