Because you don't know as a 97MPH pitch is coming in
whether it’s exactly on the corner or exactly just off the corner, but you know it’s unhittable. One of the things that makes Cust successful is he’ll walk on that half the time where most guys will get out 95% of the time. Because it was an unhittable pitch.
He was completely right to watch it, and I give the benefit of the doubt to Cust a hell of a lot more than I will to an umpire who hasn’t been consistent at all
He should have been out by a mile. Ichiro throws 150 ft. seeds. My 8-yr old listens to base coaching better than that. That being said, way to steal a run, dumbass!
Even if we’re generous and say there’s a 20% chance Crosby is safe there, the next hitter is better than a .200 hitter, so it’s still more likely that a base hit/wild pitch/error brings the run in.
It was a fucking stupid move and it was lucky. There’s no real way to defend it, but I’m glad it worked.
someone o this fucking team shows some fire and daring and there is something wrong with me? Seriously? It wasn’t by the book but in case you haven’t noticed, we were 8-12.
It was a stupid play he was fortunate to score on. Glad it got them a win but it doesn’t change the fact he was out by a mile if the throw’s good. Then it would have really stood out as a terrible play by Crosby. It was still a bad one but it worked this time.
There’s showing fire and there’s playing smart. That wasn’t smart.
I guess we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one
But sometimes in sports when a team is listless and without life, it takes putting pressure on the other team to make a play for things to begin turning around. That’s not being stupid in my book. It is taking a chance. And taking chances are not always bad.. Obviously.
I would have appreciated the chance having been taken, and disappointed it didn’t work. But obviously we don’t see eye to eye on this. I also appreciate that
I deserve to be banned for sharing my opinion? For saying “get some balls”? Didn’t know that would be so offensive but I certainly apologize to anyone I offended. Right now I’m the only one being attacked as far as I can tell. You all certainly have the right to disagree with me. Fair enough. But I’m not sure where the outright vitriol is coming from. We all root for the same team, correct?
that I recognize that I was somewhat aggressive in some of the verbiage I used in stating my opinion (partly that was due to my being revved up over Crosby getting us the lead, partly it is due to my inherent nature to express strong opinions about things). i had zero intention of attacking anyone personally and if anything I wrote was taken as such I truly do apologize. I’m not what one would call a regular to this site, and so maybe that in and of itself should be reason to tone down my brashness. But I really was just trying to state an opinion. Take it (and me) however you will
BoCros is in da house! I’m going to stop giving Bobby so much crap. The guy is on a mission. He’s trying out there and that was a gutsy play. I’m all for him playing instead of Chavez for the rest of the year. At least this guy isn’t a pansy like Chavvy is.
Hahaha! Yeah, you would expect that. The guy’s just on a mission to be healthy so he can be out there on the field. Clearly, that’s the only way he’s going to be playing (but then again, we’re losing players to the DL every day so he’s going to get his playing time)
I think we need some runs
and one is not enough

OldhamA - May 2, 2009
sfgate.com

And it’s LOUD.
Nick - May 2, 2009
how could cust take that 2-1 pitch??
jasonthea - May 2, 2009
inside
cuppingmaster - May 2, 2009
it was not inside-- well over the plate
and now he looks at strike 3— I HATE THEIR APPROACH
jasonthea - May 2, 2009
It was a ball.
Swinging at balls is not a good idea.
mikev - May 2, 2009
he would have chopped that last one to SS
cuppingmaster - May 2, 2009
I was thinking the same thing
Trainman - May 2, 2009
it was right in the hitting zone
maybe he guessed sl;ider
jasonthea - May 2, 2009
He better not be guessing slider 2-1
I’d be worried
Helloooo 1st - May 2, 2009
He's Jack Cust
If there’s on guy on the A’s who gets a free pass when it comes to pitch selection, it’s him.
Joey C. - May 2, 2009

Very Bad at Bat
quit trying to walk
Trainman - May 2, 2009
Yeah, asshole, start swinging at pitches out of the zone.
mikev - May 2, 2009
Got to protect the plate
No excuse no matter how bad the ump is
Trainman - May 2, 2009
Bailey just threw a pitch the SAME height to Branyan and it was called a ball
but it was over the middle of the plate.
mikev - May 2, 2009
He swung the bat that AB, Trainman
and he took ball 4, which the ump called strike 3.
It is not Cust’s fault that the A’s offense has been bad.
Nick - May 2, 2009
That's been a ball all game

it was low

ElQuesoCapitan - May 2, 2009
Folks, folks, folks.
It was a strike and Cust was right to take it because he wasn’t going to hit it – just a great pitch. :-(
Nico - May 2, 2009
Nico
how can he be “right” to take it when the go ahead run is on 2B and there are 2 outs? It was a horrible Ab by Cust
jasonthea - May 2, 2009
Because it was a ball.
That’s why you don’t swing at it.
mikev - May 2, 2009
Because you don't know as a 97MPH pitch is coming in

HaHa! Petit
Great game to return.

Mark who????
jasonthea - May 2, 2009

cuppingmaster - May 2, 2009
Wow, if the catcher had caught the ball...
that would have been bad, bad news.
whiteshoes40 - May 2, 2009
you gotta push it there in my opinion
though I’m not sure what it says about the clubhouse if there is that kind of disregard for coaches
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
Nice fokkin' smash at the plate by Croz
paradox - May 2, 2009
YES!!!

Jjjsixsix - May 2, 2009
they didnt call it defensive indifference?
SamYam - May 2, 2009
His speed took over
mikev - May 2, 2009
I love that he ran through Gallego's stop sign
You suck Gags – thanks for all you did as a player but you suck as a coach
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
he was out by a mile if the catcher comes up with it
paradox - May 2, 2009
I don't care---
sometimes you have to take a chance
jasonthea - May 2, 2009
God help Croz on this thread if he's thrown out
Glad it all worked out.
paradox - May 2, 2009
That's dumb.
9 times out of 10 the catcher doesn’t drop the ball and Crosby is out.
That’s not taking a chance, that’s making a dumb move.
mikev - May 2, 2009
because the offense is so fucking reliable
and we’re not in a total malaise???
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
So?
That’s a reason to send a guy who isn’t a fast runner on a ball hit pretty much directly to one of the best throwing outfielders possibly ever?
mikev - May 2, 2009
there is that
When you’re sucky you gotta make something happen, or try, that is a point.
paradox - May 2, 2009
That's not really a good reason to force things in situations like that
The A’s have run themselves into enough outs as it is without doing it more and more.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
+1
He should have been out by a mile. Ichiro throws 150 ft. seeds. My 8-yr old listens to base coaching better than that. That being said, way to steal a run, dumbass!
Technotofu - May 2, 2009
If Crosby ran through a stop sign that's not exactly Gallego's fault, is it?
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
It was the right call.
1. Running on Ichiro is stupid
2. The ball beat him there by 20 feet
mikev - May 2, 2009
of course you are right
but check out the “Cincinnati Kid”— “the wrong move at the right time.”
jasonthea - May 2, 2009
make the make the play
they didn’t
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
This isn't little league.
In the bigs, that play is made 99% of the time.
I’m glad he dropped it, but it was a stupid thing to ignore Gallego and run through the stop sign.
mikev - May 2, 2009
I think Gallego made the right call.
Ichiro has a great arm. Fortunately, Crosby got away with it anyway.
iglew - May 2, 2009
I see what you're saying, now
And it was a mistake to run through the stop sign. He got very lucky.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
cmon guys get some god damn balls
this team is sucking ass right now and someone has got to push it
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
Oh get over yourself
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
It worked. It was still a mistake to go on that.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
Yeah, that's stupid.
Even if we’re generous and say there’s a 20% chance Crosby is safe there, the next hitter is better than a .200 hitter, so it’s still more likely that a base hit/wild pitch/error brings the run in.
It was a fucking stupid move and it was lucky. There’s no real way to defend it, but I’m glad it worked.
mikev - May 2, 2009
get over myself?
someone o this fucking team shows some fire and daring and there is something wrong with me? Seriously? It wasn’t by the book but in case you haven’t noticed, we were 8-12.
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
Teams that lose kinda do stupid stuff a lot.
That was a stupid thing to do.
mikev - May 2, 2009
"get some god damn balls," huh?
It was a stupid play he was fortunate to score on. Glad it got them a win but it doesn’t change the fact he was out by a mile if the throw’s good. Then it would have really stood out as a terrible play by Crosby. It was still a bad one but it worked this time.
There’s showing fire and there’s playing smart. That wasn’t smart.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
I guess we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one
But sometimes in sports when a team is listless and without life, it takes putting pressure on the other team to make a play for things to begin turning around. That’s not being stupid in my book. It is taking a chance. And taking chances are not always bad.. Obviously.
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
I'm glad it worked
I’d be really pissed off if the throw was good and he was out.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
fair enough
I would have appreciated the chance having been taken, and disappointed it didn’t work. But obviously we don’t see eye to eye on this. I also appreciate that
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
it is possible to think WAY too much in sports, you know that?
And while you were crunching your numbers, Crosby won us the game. What does your calculator say about that?
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
Again, get over yourself
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
Why so testy?
EVA enjoys taking low-probability gambles that work out. To each his own. Why are people so determined to deny him that joy?
iglew - May 2, 2009
Right now it's saying that you're an idiot.
So i guess my calculator deserves a CGV.
mikev - May 2, 2009
Well
I’m glad we’re all enjoying this win properly.
Not directed at you mikev.
67MARQUEZ - May 2, 2009
I'm heading out to the hot tub.
Plenty of enjoying gonna happen.
Hope I don’t get my calculator wet
mikev - May 2, 2009
Need a hand?
Oh.
67MARQUEZ - May 2, 2009
Ban this nutjob
I’m so tired of negativity and stupid jibes btw stats and non-stats. Start banning and maybe people will shut up and stop trying to attack everyone.
Helloooo 1st - May 2, 2009
+1
doctorK - May 2, 2009
Now I'm totally confused
I deserve to be banned for sharing my opinion? For saying “get some balls”? Didn’t know that would be so offensive but I certainly apologize to anyone I offended. Right now I’m the only one being attacked as far as I can tell. You all certainly have the right to disagree with me. Fair enough. But I’m not sure where the outright vitriol is coming from. We all root for the same team, correct?
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
I wouldn't support a ban for this
It’s just a difference of opinion.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
I just want to say
that I recognize that I was somewhat aggressive in some of the verbiage I used in stating my opinion (partly that was due to my being revved up over Crosby getting us the lead, partly it is due to my inherent nature to express strong opinions about things). i had zero intention of attacking anyone personally and if anything I wrote was taken as such I truly do apologize. I’m not what one would call a regular to this site, and so maybe that in and of itself should be reason to tone down my brashness. But I really was just trying to state an opinion. Take it (and me) however you will
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009
No harm done
Really.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
(And I think people know I state my opinions pretty strongly, right or wrong)
He scored so we can all be happy about that in the end since it was key to them winning.
Flashfire - May 2, 2009
Thanks, Flashfire
A much needed win tonight. Enjoy it, and the rest of your evening
EastVillageA - May 2, 2009

jakebmill - May 2, 2009
BoCros is in da house! I’m going to stop giving Bobby so much crap. The guy is on a mission. He’s trying out there and that was a gutsy play. I’m all for him playing instead of Chavez for the rest of the year. At least this guy isn’t a pansy like Chavvy is.
ATLDuck - May 2, 2009
Sigh
Helloooo 1st - May 2, 2009
if he hadn't dropped the throw, he'd have been out by 5 ft.
Zonis - May 2, 2009
No way! BoCro would trampled over him like Brandon Jacobs ran over LaRon Landry.
ATLDuck - May 2, 2009
The thing that shocked ME the most
was that Crosby somehow stayed in one piece after that.
I mean, this is Bobby Bones of Glass Crosby we’re talking about
Zonis - May 2, 2009
It's the new Crosby.
Playing SS made him fragile. Playing other positions makes him strong.
iglew - May 2, 2009
Hahaha! Yeah, you would expect that. The guy’s just on a mission to be healthy so he can be out there on the field. Clearly, that’s the only way he’s going to be playing (but then again, we’re losing players to the DL every day so he’s going to get his playing time)
ATLDuck - May 2, 2009
clearly you are an angels fan
cuppingmaster - May 2, 2009
