Got the chance to chat with him after a game in Lake Elsinore last year that I covered, then a little more in Lancaster the day after a start. Pretty nice guy. Big 311 fan as well. We’ve both been to 311 Day in New Orleans now. ;-)
It’s easy to watch a team when they are winning. I am going to watch every night to see what different and unique ways this can implode! Errors from every infielder? Check. Home run hitters hitting dribblers. Not a problem. 6 run leads given up. It’s easy! If you watch the A’s every night, you will see something you have never seen before.
BB is a very intelligent guy. No doubt about that one.
However, if he ran a business like he does this team right now would he make a profit? I know that some of these moves take time but Geren should be fired NOW and he should make some wholesale changes (like he did shipping Jeremy Giambi) to give the team a chance to respond. Sitting idle isn’t helping anything.
so one good thing I discovered (turn those frowns upside down!)
If you already bought MLB Audio you can upgrade to Gameday Premium for only $5 more. I don’t think they had that option before, but clearly no one was stupid enough to buy both at full price.
What Tampa was.. what the Royals might still be.. what the Pirates still are. It’s kind of exciting— I think it is basically “Trading Places” and we’re Dan Aykroyd
new ballpark… growing fan base and attendance… real hitters… lose Weeks for season and rookie Gamel gets in lineup for first ML start and he goes yard second time up.
Brewers know what’s up. Went to a game there last season, and I’ve been following them since. Having Macha only helps, and of course they look like a great team with him at the helm, while this team continues to be a fucking disaster. Changes need to be made ASAP or there will be Marlins-like attendance for the rest of the season.
But the standards seem to be low for radio voices.
I’ve known way too many Gilbert & Sullivan geeks, and nearly all of them do a passably good accent. I wonder if it’s a matter of audience demand. If you went on stage in a G&S show with a bad accent, all the G&S queens would rip you mercilessly. But do a crappy accent on a Pepsi ad and no one cares.
I have a friend who lived in London for a year. That was about five years ago but even now she can pop into a perfect accent any time she wants to.
I wonder if it’s easier for British actors to immerse themselves in American accent than vice versa, simply because American talk is more ubiquitous.
That said, I think the real answer here is laziness. Developing a good accent as an actor is 99% study and practice. Either you care enough to do the job or you don’t.
Thing is, it's hard to judge a pitcher who comes into a blowout situation
It’s a lot easier to pitch well, or strike guys out, when it’s a blowout. You can see the stuff, the process, but not really whether they’re “ready for prime time.”
After school today, I beat my friend in MLB ’09: The Show with an epic comeback. I trailed 7-0 with the Rockies against the Indians and scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game. A two-run home run by Troy Tulowitzki put me ahead for good and I won the game, 9-7, in 12 innings.
Upton (too young), Drew (good but not great – and injured I think), Reynolds (strike out machine – I imagine his production is unsustainable), Young (similar).
but I don’t think Billy’s ego figures into it at all. And I don’t think their friendship figures into it either.
I think it’s a difficult business decision to decide when to cut a failing manager loose, and I think we don’t know everything that’s going on behind the scenes. But I think eventually you reach a point where you have to make the move, and I think we’re getting close to that point now.
considering I was 92-2001 on POW Island in SE Alaska then 2001 to 9/2008 in Ketchikan, Alaska and I got here Labor Day….start in Idaho day after Memorial day.
I knew a very, very hot young Latina woman (Half Mexican and half Italian) who was 20 years younger than me at the time. She had the greatest (IMO) rear end I have ever seen. She was beautiful from head to toe. Very nice personality to go with the knock out looks. She moved to Idaho with her 3 year old daughter. I think she moved to Caldwell or somewhere close to that.
We’ve had teams in the past which were much better than this one but no obvious candidate for the All Star game. On the other hand, this year’s team is awful but we have three legitimate candidates. I think Cust totally deserves it, and both Suzuki and Bailey are perfectly respectable choices as well.
Cliff Lee is turning it around but it might be too late. I don’t think he makes it.
Martinez is hitting .401 with 7 HRs. Whether Sizemore makes it or he does not, Martinez should be voted in. He’s been playing some 1B so maybe he makes it as a 1B. But then Suzuki still has to beat out Napoli whose numbers are better, or hope they carry a 3rd catcher.
but he looked to be about 16. It could very well be that our players don’t take this game seriously enough. I know it should be fun, but fun takes commitment too.
and it's a bitchy thread, too

Huge understatement
Brewers know what’s up. Went to a game there last season, and I’ve been following them since. Having Macha only helps, and of course they look like a great team with him at the helm, while this team continues to be a fucking disaster. Changes need to be made ASAP or there will be Marlins-like attendance for the rest of the season.

They could probably outproduce our lineup on their own.

It just wasn't good enough

ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009

The fact that we fired Macha for Geren. Talk about your all-time backfires.

I wonder if AIE does.
iglew - May 18, 2009
He's not a 'Brit', he's dual citizenship now.
Why do you ask anyway?
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
There are two different ads which feature
really crappy fake British accents.
Or at least that’s how it sounds to me. I wanted to ask for a second opinion.
iglew - May 18, 2009
Ah ok. AIE might pay for it, you'll just have to ask him when he's around.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
It's always interested me
Most British actors can do a very good American accent, but very few Americans can do a convincing English accent.
Englishmajor - May 18, 2009
I've known stage actors who were great,
But the standards seem to be low for radio voices.
I’ve known way too many Gilbert & Sullivan geeks, and nearly all of them do a passably good accent. I wonder if it’s a matter of audience demand. If you went on stage in a G&S show with a bad accent, all the G&S queens would rip you mercilessly. But do a crappy accent on a Pepsi ad and no one cares.
iglew - May 18, 2009
because Americans are too selfish to learn
someone else’s way?
ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
Dude, Brits only learn English.
Go on the continent and they’re all at least bi-lingual.
It’s just because we have better actors.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
I was only kidding :-)
ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
Best way to pick up an accent is immersion.
Either you care enough to do the job or you don’t.
iglew - May 18, 2009
I've tried immersion, and found my accent stays the same
but my lungs get filled with water and I can’t breathe.

DyeLongJustice - May 18, 2009
Interesting.
The managers of both of those teams were MLB Managers of the Year in 2007. Number of wins is a terrible measure of a manager’s abilities.
Rocktopus - May 18, 2009
so Geren is a genius perhaps?
ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
Well I certainly don't blame him for all of the A's losses.
I only blame him for the boneheaded moves he makes during the game and in constructing the lineup.
And Macha was not a good manager simply because we won a lot of games while he was here.
Rocktopus - May 18, 2009
The Zona guy has been fired, no?
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Yup.
Rocktopus - May 18, 2009
or ERA and wins are terrible stats for pitchers
Cliff Lee is not THAT good…nor is Fausto Carmona…and losing C.C. didn’t help
But an Arizona rotation with Haren, Webb, and Davis? I’d expect that alone to get the team higher in the standings than the A’s.
DyeLongJustice - May 18, 2009
no offense, though
OaklandSi - May 18, 2009
Yeah guys they depend on are sketchy at best:
Upton (too young), Drew (good but not great – and injured I think), Reynolds (strike out machine – I imagine his production is unsustainable), Young (similar).

but but we have neither at this point

GreenNGoldSooner - May 18, 2009
I also think Geren will be fired soon,
but I don’t think Billy’s ego figures into it at all. And I don’t think their friendship figures into it either.
I think it’s a difficult business decision to decide when to cut a failing manager loose, and I think we don’t know everything that’s going on behind the scenes. But I think eventually you reach a point where you have to make the move, and I think we’re getting close to that point now.

ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
Late June? Those are some rubbish super powers.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Sign Kennedy to an extension!!
He’s playing well enough to hurt himself!
DyeLongJustice - May 18, 2009
Haha!
True outcome.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
Good night folks
It’s been…. fun?
You guys are fun. The team, not so much!
streetfan - May 18, 2009
ElQuesoCapitan - May 18, 2009
See?
We need you for those.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
When did Eric Byrnes change sports?
Flashfire - May 18, 2009
yah
ak_A - May 18, 2009
I hope Jack Cust is our lone rep to the all star game this year!
Socalfan21 - May 18, 2009
So does my fantasy team, he'd have to have the best stats in the league to even sniff it.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Kurt Suzuki?
Rated-R Superstar - May 18, 2009
If he keeps this up, sure.
If he does though he’ll be one of the most valuable players in the league.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
more likely to be Suzuki
Cust would be competing with AL DH/OF, Suzuki with catchers.
OaklandSi - May 18, 2009
Funny thing about All Star teams
We’ve had teams in the past which were much better than this one but no obvious candidate for the All Star game. On the other hand, this year’s team is awful but we have three legitimate candidates. I think Cust totally deserves it, and both Suzuki and Bailey are perfectly respectable choices as well.
iglew - May 18, 2009
I feel like it's going to be Bailey only.
Unless Cust starts hitting for more power, he simply won’t have the numbers to make it as an outfielder.
Suzuki has a shot, but it’s going to be tough to beat Mauer, Victor Martinez, and Mike Napoli.
Rocktopus - May 18, 2009
they'll choose at least 2 catchers
OaklandSi - May 18, 2009
for the AL team, I mean -- perhaps 3
OaklandSi - May 18, 2009
The only way I see him beating any of those three
is if Martinez gets knocked for not playing full time catcher or if Napoli starts getting fewer at bats because Vlad comes back and takes the DH.
Rocktopus - May 18, 2009
Anyone else likely from Cleveland?
If the one-guy-per-team rule obliges them to pick Martinez that could make a difference.
iglew - May 18, 2009
Sizemore's hitting .220 with 7 HRs.
Rocktopus - May 18, 2009
I want to see him in the home run derby
he would take 100 pitches
Future Ed - May 18, 2009
Denver Nuggets scheduled WWE for the same night
as game #4 at the Pepsi Center vs. the Lakers. What will they do?
ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
Oh god, do I listen to the Angels broadcast team or the Mariners'.
Pick your poison.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Mariners for sure.
stormtown - May 18, 2009
The Can of Corn guy irks me.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
its time.......
for a new manager
BUT WHO?
Wreckonized - May 18, 2009
Tony D. for the rest of the season
ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
Ron Washington.
Oh, wait…
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
They sent him back to AAA
I assume he was not good enough in their opinions to coach up here?
Trainman - May 18, 2009
He was HORRIBLE as 3B coach, I do not want that clown as a manager.
33SwisherSweet - May 18, 2009
Because coaching third base has a lot to do with managing
He’s done pretty well in Sacramento, not that that automatically guarantees success in the Majors. We know that from watching some of our players.
Flashfire - May 18, 2009
(He also coaches third in Sacramento)
Flashfire - May 18, 2009
Geren did pretty well in Sacramento.
Tony D’s record in Sacramento is actually quite a bit better than “pretty well”. His winning percentage is something like 57% over five seasons.
iglew - May 18, 2009
he wasn't so successful with the ML club last year
OaklandSi - May 18, 2009
Who knows?
ohtobe21likehuston - May 18, 2009
This needs a poll.
So far I’m on board for Jamie Quirk, but I’m open to other suggestions.
iglew - May 18, 2009
I like him just for the name.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Just got home
we still suck right
robbo650 - May 18, 2009
Yes
It ain’t stopping soon either unfortunately
Trainman - May 18, 2009
The A's have yet to get this memo.
ElQuesoCapitan - May 18, 2009
Jeez the Yanks are bunting.
How the mighty have fallen.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
endless pit
ElQuesoCapitan - May 18, 2009
If Lackey's 1st half doeon pitches are any indication
He is going to get slaughtered.
Fly ball deep for out
foul ball for close to homer
Hard hit single
Trainman - May 18, 2009
Dozen
Trainman - May 18, 2009
That was a hard hit single that nearly bounced to the plate.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Griffey gets a single
His 2700th hit
Trainman - May 18, 2009
So there's real baseball going on, is what you're trying to say.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
All over, you just have to look for it. ;-)
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Yeah, so I'm actually watching Minn/NYY
Its all I’ve got.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
Which is funny,
because the NY BF is from MN.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
And MN loses 7-6.
HATE the Yanks!
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
Some guy called Coke is stumbling through a save...
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
He managed.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
Not quite sure how. He looked terrible.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
He did...but when the pitching coach came out to talk to him,
he said “Yes, sir”.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
And I don't know this kid,
but he looked to be about 16. It could very well be that our players don’t take this game seriously enough. I know it should be fun, but fun takes commitment too.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
He's playing for the Yankees.
I get the feeling they take everything seriously over there.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
And the A's need to do the same,
Maybe they are, and maybe they haven’t found their groove yet. I don’t know. I hope they find it soon.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
I'm on the NexDef feed so I haven't seen that yet.
He’s looked terrible this year though.
OldhamA - May 18, 2009
Three runs in the first, and it lowered his ERA
Flashfire - May 18, 2009
Melissa Lockard will be talking A's minor league
on Extra Innings with Buan
OaklandSi - May 18, 2009
I'm listening.
lynnzgal - May 18, 2009
