Eveland sucked, but Giese did not, retiring 10 in a row to give the A's a chance in the game. Holliday tied it up with a bomb, and we're looking for some NINTH INNING MOJO!
I watched him pitch in the WBC. He has added another plus pitch and looks like he’s pitching even better than before. Glad the A’s don’t have to see him as a rule anymore.
You know, I don't begrudge the way he handled the 5th inning
The one and only thing Eveland does well is keep the ball in the park, and look at what ended up happening even with Eveland getting pulled as late as he was: Giese had to pitch 3.1 IP. Sure, he did a great job but did you really want to see Giese pitch that long in a tight game? That whole mess was created by one man and that’s Dana Eveland who, as I keep saying, is not a good pitcher.
Our starting pitchers have to start going at least 5-6 innings, we’re taxing our bullpen way too much these guys have to learn how to get deeper in games.
No competent manager makes some of the moves I’ve seen this year – and I’m one of the LAST people to jump on the manager for tactical moves. Most moves are defensible one way or the other, or look good or bad based on how the player does. There is no justification for a move like walking Branyan and putting your pitcher in a “back to the wall” situation.
Russell Branyan, for all his April, 2009 success, has spent his career batting for a low average. And if you get into a battle like happened with Lopez, you can just bury a couple of cutters. Springer couldn’t do that with Lopez. Are you telling me that Russell Branyan’s batting average is better than Jose Lopez’ on base percentage?
Just an idiotic move. As was bunting with Travis Buck with Crosby and Patterson on deck.
there’s a young man from East Chicago who really seriously might be the best fighter in the world. And I know him. Well, I’ve talked to him. And I make all his banners and shorts. Miguel’s the baddest little fucker I know.
He really seriously hasn’t lost a “real” fight in about ten or fifteen years, which is unheard of in MMA. He has one loss on his record and I asked about that. He came back four months after tearing his ACL.
Simple as that. Starting pitching isn’t very good, bullpen is not good enough, the hitting is not very good, the manager sucks. It is just a bad baseball team and bad teams find all kinds of ways to lose. Tonight it consisted of blowing a 6-1 lead. Awful to watch
has Eveland and Outman in the rotation you would think he is conceding the division already.
I myself think there is plenty of time providing these 2 are ejected from the rotation as soon as Gallagher and someone else (anyone) is ready to take over.
to give up on the promise of this group. I don’t think it’s a bad team overall…..I think we are in a similar situation to years past with people on the DL etc. We have a young pitching staff which will have to learn how to suck it up during adverse situations. That’s what didn’t go right tonight – holding the opposition to 0 in the inning after we scored a bunch of runs.
Escobar, Santana, and Lackey will be back soon enough. And the lack of K Rod won’t matter as much then. Vlad is already a non-factor since last year, but Torii Hunter has really stepped up the power. fact is, now is the time to build up some wins
By late May the team could have a rotation of Braden, Anderson, Cahill, Gio, and Gallagher, and all five could be throwing the ball really well. By June you could add Duchscherer to that and subtract the weakest of those five. It’s a long season in a terrible division.
What's frustrating to me is that the young guys have enough
roadblocks being young and inexperienced that they don’t need crap like “Gallagher and Buck don’t play for no reason” and “let’s manage so stupidly that we lose games we could win.”
that’s why so many teams have let him go. no one has ever doubted his power, but hard to live with the low average and 100+ K’s. Which is exactly what we needed right there
The important point is that you get to pitch to Branyan on your terms
You turn him into a low average hitter who might walk – which is fine – by throwing cutters below the knees any time you feel like it. With Lopez, you have to throw strikes, Lopez knows it, and you can’t even come too far inside because if you hit him you lose the game and Lopez knows that too. Branyan won’t be a .333 hitter if you can pitch him any way you please.
From the standpoint of the attitude of the team for the rest of the year… this was a pretty big loss, and I doubt it will be forgotten easy. Horrible Starting pitching and questionable coaching calls. All this combined with our Injury problems, Beane really needs to look hard at where this organization stands.
Baseball players have short memories - it's a necessary part of the job
I don’t think this loss will sting the team much; it’s just symptomatic of the problems the team has in terms of management and SP. And an infield of Crosby at 3B, Patterson at 2B and Giambi at 1B is going to kill a young staff of ground ball pitchers.
1. we have Ryan Sweeney
2. the “Salam Hayek’s jugs” MOJO will pay dividends this season
3. Eveland & Outman will not always be in the rotation
4. we have Ryan Sweeney
5. Matt Holliday woke up
6. the Angels’ best pitchers are buying bandaids in bulk
7. we have Ryan Sweeney
8. it’s not certain that Crosby will play every position except for SS this year
9. it doesn’t matter anyway, cause we’re all gonna die
Now, it seems they’ve turned the table on us. I like the way we are playing right now, staying in games. That was a great at-bat for Jose Lopez. I like the lineup we have now. Hopefully, we can pick up the next two games. Go A’s!!!
Let's Go Oakland

cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
agree
I watched him pitch in the WBC. He has added another plus pitch and looks like he’s pitching even better than before. Glad the A’s don’t have to see him as a rule anymore.

that IBB was uncalled for.
Geren managed to throw this one away, IMO.
One won lost won - May 1, 2009
He could arguably be fired for that move alone
Russell Branyan does not have a batting average worthy of an intentional walk in that situation and Jose Lopez is too good a hitter to pitch to.
Nico - May 1, 2009
FUCK YOU, MARINERS, FUCK YOU!
DANA EVELAND, GET YOUR ASS TO SACRAMENTO!

But yeah, we can just say I hate the world in general right now.
Time to watch The Notebook.
whiteshoes40 - May 1, 2009
icky chick movie.

oaklandSMASH - May 1, 2009
That's what happens when your pitcher has no margin for error
Walking Branyan was the single worst managing decision I’ve seen this year from a guy whose managing decisions have been pathetic.
Nico - May 1, 2009
agreed
branyan has hit what .221 in his career?
cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
exactly...Branyan to load the bases???
One won lost won - May 1, 2009
Mega dittos
why, why, why?
MobiusKlein - May 1, 2009
Nico
you are so right— this guy is a loser. Period.
jasonthea - May 1, 2009
He should be fired
period.
It’s not going to happen though
Trainman - May 1, 2009
Well, Billy's gonna have to read about it on the front page tomorrow
because my job is to call it like I see it. And I don’t see a major league manager.
Nico - May 1, 2009
Exactly Nico
cyke17 - May 1, 2009
a real smart guy would have gotten eveland out of there after the first home run
and a halfway smart guy would never have walked Branyan
jasonthea - May 1, 2009
I''m less upset about that one...
… More upset about The Bunt call and loading the bases in 9th forcing springer to challenge lopez.
cyke17 - May 1, 2009
as am I
notice I said it would only take a fair amount of intelligence to pitch to Branyan. And yes the bunt with a left handed hitter up was stupid as well.
jasonthea - May 1, 2009
A real smart GM
would get rid of the SP to AAA. and fire his best man for good measure.
Alas, I do not see this happening
Trainman - May 1, 2009
You know, I don't begrudge the way he handled the 5th inning
The one and only thing Eveland does well is keep the ball in the park, and look at what ended up happening even with Eveland getting pulled as late as he was: Giese had to pitch 3.1 IP. Sure, he did a great job but did you really want to see Giese pitch that long in a tight game? That whole mess was created by one man and that’s Dana Eveland who, as I keep saying, is not a good pitcher.
Nico - May 1, 2009
YEP
Hit the nail on the head there.
Trainman - May 1, 2009
Agreed
Our starting pitchers have to start going at least 5-6 innings, we’re taxing our bullpen way too much these guys have to learn how to get deeper in games.
cyke17 - May 1, 2009
he's a AAAA manager
send him back to Sactown.
jasonthea - May 1, 2009
Nico, I can't tell whether you are serious or not. I hope you are because, in my opinion, Geren
has cost us a few games already this year. Beane should have never hired his best friend. Just plain stupid / conflict of interest if you will.
33SwisherSweet - May 1, 2009
I'm totally serious
Nico - May 1, 2009
Branyan is a strikout machine
Like you say, just another idiotic move by a total idiot.
Trainman - May 1, 2009
and he should have been smart enough to pull eveland too
jasonthea - May 1, 2009
He's not smart
he is a horrible manager
Trainman - May 1, 2009
agreed, he is horrible.
cyke17 - May 1, 2009
Geren needs to get pissed
cyke17 - May 1, 2009

nil, I would think
Trainman - May 1, 2009
Really, who wants to watch a postgame show after this game?
I’d only watch it if they showed Ryan’s catch and Holliday’s HR on a loop for the entire show.

alox - May 1, 2009

Leopold Bloom - May 1, 2009
I would have preferred plain sucking i think

cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
No, last year was much less preferable.
Leopold Bloom - May 1, 2009
tomorrow I'll say different about the sucking
But this was a completely winnable game

Speaking of Sac
I think Buck is really on a short leash right now. Have to figure Denorfia or even Doolittle may get a shot in the lineup soon.
apilgrim - May 1, 2009
There are 28 teams with more wins than us
I can count at least three that Geren has lost with his idiotic lack of intelligence.
Trainman - May 1, 2009
why couldn't we have had Earl Weaver Jr managing our AAA club?
Or Lasorda.. or Herzog… or anyone but this fool/tool
jasonthea - May 1, 2009

oaklandSMASH - May 1, 2009

Felt the same with Chavez back in the day.
But maybe it’s because when he won my ex-wife did that cool thing for me.
67MARQUEZ - May 1, 2009
Buddy, if you're a fan of Mexicans,
there’s a young man from East Chicago who really seriously might be the best fighter in the world.
Leopold Bloom - May 1, 2009
I am, but
I used to watch it more when I was married and we’d have these insane parties to watch Chavez fight. We’re talking 50-60 people. And carnitas.
67MARQUEZ - May 1, 2009
parties are good.
Leopold Bloom - May 1, 2009
Except

67MARQUEZ - May 1, 2009

alox - May 1, 2009
This is just a bad team folks
Simple as that. Starting pitching isn’t very good, bullpen is not good enough, the hitting is not very good, the manager sucks. It is just a bad baseball team and bad teams find all kinds of ways to lose. Tonight it consisted of blowing a 6-1 lead. Awful to watch
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
good enough team
bad manager with a garbage pitcher tonight
oaklandSMASH - May 1, 2009
Just by the fact that Beane
has Eveland and Outman in the rotation you would think he is conceding the division already.
I myself think there is plenty of time providing these 2 are ejected from the rotation as soon as Gallagher and someone else (anyone) is ready to take over.
Trainman - May 1, 2009
I just think you're being way too optimistic.
This team is just not good in any phase of the game.
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
I not willing
to give up on the promise of this group.
BERRYJO - May 1, 2009
I don't think it's a good team, but this division really sucks
Nico - May 1, 2009
true enough
but I don’t see anything that would suggest that this is a .500 club and someone will finish .500 in this division – if only barely
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
the Angels only suck temporarily though
Escobar, Santana, and Lackey will be back soon enough. And the lack of K Rod won’t matter as much then. Vlad is already a non-factor since last year, but Torii Hunter has really stepped up the power. fact is, now is the time to build up some wins
cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
Our SP
is pathetic
Our BP had the best ERA in baseball starting the night and probably still does. Springer pitched horrible at Texas and no better tonight.
Our hitting is starting to show signs of life but has been pathetic as well. Stats don’t lie do they?
It is a bad division and as long as the Angels lose, I am somewhat happy.
Trainman - May 1, 2009
yeah, every night its a new damn excuse
If we would have only done this, or that or that. Like I said, bad teams find all kinds of ways to lose. And this is a bad team
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
This year, Branyan is hitting .333 and Lopez .253
I’m just saying. I thought pitching to Lopez was a good move. But, then again, I’ve been drinking quite heavily since I got home, so what do I know.
Kallus - May 1, 2009
what is this statement based on?
In what aspect of the game is this team good?
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
meant to reply to SMASH
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
They're good enough
they aren’t great but they are better than their record denotes
oaklandSMASH - May 1, 2009
I can answer that
By late May the team could have a rotation of Braden, Anderson, Cahill, Gio, and Gallagher, and all five could be throwing the ball really well. By June you could add Duchscherer to that and subtract the weakest of those five. It’s a long season in a terrible division.
Nico - May 1, 2009
i hope you're right
Thanks for picking me up tonight – though I expect to be back in the shitter tomorrow night, frankly
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
What's frustrating to me is that the young guys have enough
roadblocks being young and inexperienced that they don’t need crap like “Gallagher and Buck don’t play for no reason” and “let’s manage so stupidly that we lose games we could win.”
Nico - May 1, 2009
Hammer, meet nail head.
67MARQUEZ - May 1, 2009
indeed
EastVillageA - May 1, 2009
who cares
branyan has hit like .220 in his career. branyan will swing at anything.
cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
I kinda care...
besides, is his career average more relevant to the situation than the most recent month of the season, in which he’s mashing pretty hard?
Kallus - May 1, 2009
he just strikes out a lot
that’s why so many teams have let him go. no one has ever doubted his power, but hard to live with the low average and 100+ K’s. Which is exactly what we needed right there
cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
The important point is that you get to pitch to Branyan on your terms
You turn him into a low average hitter who might walk – which is fine – by throwing cutters below the knees any time you feel like it. With Lopez, you have to throw strikes, Lopez knows it, and you can’t even come too far inside because if you hit him you lose the game and Lopez knows that too. Branyan won’t be a .333 hitter if you can pitch him any way you please.
Nico - May 1, 2009
that's a great point, Nico, and also Cuppingmaster
I was just looking at the situation through the ‘not letting their hottest hitter beat you’ viewpoint, but I see what you’re saying.
Kallus - May 1, 2009
I think Tonights game will standout...
From the standpoint of the attitude of the team for the rest of the year… this was a pretty big loss, and I doubt it will be forgotten easy. Horrible Starting pitching and questionable coaching calls. All this combined with our Injury problems, Beane really needs to look hard at where this organization stands.
cyke17 - May 1, 2009
Baseball players have short memories - it's a necessary part of the job
I don’t think this loss will sting the team much; it’s just symptomatic of the problems the team has in terms of management and SP. And an infield of Crosby at 3B, Patterson at 2B and Giambi at 1B is going to kill a young staff of ground ball pitchers.
Nico - May 1, 2009
That's actually a luxury for baseball players
You don’t have to wait too long to go back at it.
67MARQUEZ - May 1, 2009
Nothing like being the worst team in a weak division
Let’s turn this mother around!
Good night, all!
oaklandSMASH - May 1, 2009
Peace
Let’s hope for non-embarrassment on national TV tomorrow.
cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
you're not on national television.
Mets and Phillies.
Leopold Bloom - May 1, 2009
here in LA, I think we have M's and A's
cuppingmaster - May 1, 2009
Supposed to be on MLB network
at 6 p.m
Trainman - May 1, 2009
OH!
That national television.
Comcast has decided I don’t need that channel.
Leopold Bloom - May 1, 2009
I'm a silver-lining kind of guy...
so here’s a few things we have going for us:
1. we have Ryan Sweeney
2. the “Salam Hayek’s jugs” MOJO will pay dividends this season
Kallus - May 1, 2009
We really had Seattle's number a few years back
Now, it seems they’ve turned the table on us. I like the way we are playing right now, staying in games. That was a great at-bat for Jose Lopez. I like the lineup we have now. Hopefully, we can pick up the next two games. Go A’s!!!
