Losing on Opening Night is nothing new for the A's. They've done it five seasons in a row. Getting shut out is also no big surprise. That's happened in three of those five losses.
There were a few firsts for the A's and some of their players last night (including Braden's first Opening Day start, Holliday getting a hit in his first AB with the A's and Bailey's debut, a quick 1-2-3 inning). There are more to follow tonight:
* Trevor Cahill's first Major League start, facing Dustin Moseley. Cahill has taken possession of Bob Geren's #53. Of course, Brett Anderson will get his first one on Thursday. Believe me, I'm glad the pitching probables are missing names like Santana and Lackey.
* The first runs for the A's this season. The good news is since coming to Oakland, the A's have never been shut out twice in a row to start the season, not that getting shut out by the Angels is fun at any time. Hopefully we don't see a first THERE with two straight games full of goose eggs.
This is also my first regular season gameday thread as I settle into the Tuesday spot, which pales in comparison to the rest but it's kind of nice to have something else to focus on with the baseball season underway. I've still been dealing with getting a new home, have had an offer accepted, and it looks like if all goes well I'll be moving to Elk Grove around the end of the month. It'll mean getting to fewer A's games but probably more River Cats and Ports games instead, plus an occasional drive to Reno to see the Aces (Arizona's Triple-A team, having moved from Tucson) play in their new ballpark downtown.
Let's get that first win tonight, A's! Stringing a few hits together along with the timely walk would help, but a homer or two wouldn't hurt either. Of course, I'm sure we're all hoping for a stellar debut by Mr. Cahill.
Details: 7:05 PM first pitch / TV: CSNCA+ / Radio: 860/1640 AM

No Matt Holiday tonight

He looked it yesterday,
lunging at pitches and seeming out of sorts at the plate; he did NOT look like the Matt Holliday we traded for. Glad to hear he wasn’t feeling 100%, actually.
Nico - April 7, 2009
So, whoever had ONE n the "How long until he's hurt" pool is the winner.

Being ill isn't exactly being injured, though

A quick thought about Cahill
I wouldn’t be too quick to assume that just because the Angels aren’t a patient team that he will get away with not throwing strikes. The Angels aren’t dumb, and they know the scouting report is “don’t chase the ball under the knees.” I suspect Cahill will need to prove he can hit the knees with his sinker before the Angels will start swinging freely.
If Cahill doesn’t throw a lot of strikes, even the Angels might walk 4-5 times against him. But if he does throw strikes early on, you can expect to see a lot of routine ground balls and then maybe some expansion of the strike zone as the game progresses.
Nico - April 7, 2009
I don't really care if he walks 4-5 people. As long as he gets ground balls on his sinker and
some strikeouts on his other pitches he’ll be fine. A walk is just the first step in a double play.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
Hmm...It's a very good litmus test for his overall success
Cahill will not be successful in the major leagues walking a batter every other inning. If he walks a batter every three innings, however, he will be terrific.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Sure in the long run, but this first half season I'm happy with small steps
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
Yeah - I'm just suggesting that the most important step, big or small,
is to throw strikes. If he gives up 8 hits and 1 BB in 6 IP and wins, I’ll be thrilled and optimistic going forward. If he gives up 3 hits and 4 BB in 6 IP and wins, I’ll be happy today but less optimistic going forward.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Don't be afraid to let your optimism run free man!
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
Hey, I'm all about optimism in April
It’s APRIL! There’s baseball and the Angels have the same record as the Mariners – let it stay that way.
Nico - April 7, 2009
I mean I don't think Cahill's control in April 2009 has a lot to do with his long term
success. I think he’s a future perennial Cy Young contender (if healthy) no matter what his control is like now. A lack of control now would only tell me that he’s farther away from his peak.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
Off topic somewhat
But I didn’t want to make a fanpost just for this, and I can’t seem to post a fan shot without a link..
What (and where) are a vegan’s choices at our lovely concrete bowl in Oakland? I’m bringing a buddy to Opening Night, and he’s vegan, so we would like to know what his options are.
Kaiser99 - April 7, 2009
Wait, is he a VEE-ginn or a VAY-gun?
Nico - April 7, 2009
There used to be something called veggie dogs.
I don’t think they had anything meaty or dairy, or formerly alive, in them. But the artist formerly known as Higher Pie will probably be along shortly, with a much more authoritative answer.
The Dogfather - April 7, 2009
No he won't. He choked on a huge cube of tofu earlier today.
I tried, valiantly, to perform the Heimlich Maneuver but it just doesn’t work very well over the phone.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Yummy!
I love huge cubes of tofu — preferably yuba or yudofu.

flipgatey3 - April 7, 2009
There is a salad/sandwich place near home plate
Salads might have cheese on them, though. I think your best bet might be to bring food along — check out the Vietnamese deli at Fruitvale BART. Though I am one of those who feels everything is better with bacon or foie gras on it, I do love me some papaya salad and tofu spring rolls.
Englishmajor - April 7, 2009
vegan food
I’m vegetarian, so I have a few more options, but they have delicious steamed veggiedogs which might be made out of plastic. I’m not sure what they fry the fries in, but I’d suspect it’s vegan friendly – it depends how many questions you’re going to ask.
Actually, this is what I’d recommend – you’re allowed to bring food into the ground, so I’d pick up a burrito or falafel wrap or other handheld food of choice in the town where you live, and eat it when you get in.
Or, if you’re like me, eat it outside whilst you’re drinking tecate…
alea iacta est - April 7, 2009
Thanks for the replies
I guess I should clarify – he’s not “full blown vegan” since he swears by cheese (it’s about the only flavor he can get), although he tends to steer away from other dairy products when possible.
Sorry I didn’t state that beforehand, I’m rather ignorant when it comes to what the differences are between vegan/vegetarians and what they eat (I like my steak). We’re definitely thinking it’s best he grab some food beforehand.

Due to the conflict with the Sacramento Kings game, tonight’s A’s game will be on an alternate channel:
DirecTV (A’s territory): Channel 652
DirecTV (out of market EI): Channel 733

I hate not having CSNCA.
#14fan - April 7, 2009
Geren just confirmed it was a double-steal attempt last night
Base stealers were 18/25 last year against Saunders, “he can be run against.”
Nico - April 7, 2009
18/25 isn't that great. And Ellis isn't a good base stealer.
Geren needs to use his mind more effectively.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
He should use his mind more effectively when it comes to lineups.
Rated-R Superstar - April 7, 2009
Again, the closest an A's runner got to third base all night? Then.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Ellis might have actually gotten there legitimately if he hadn't been ordered to pull a boner.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
That sounds like sexual harassment.
Nico - April 7, 2009
I know I feel violated
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
It's 72% and Ellis is about 75% over his career
Flashfire - April 7, 2009
Yeah, I got the feeling last night that folks were underestimating
Ellis’ speed. I’d say he used to have above-average speed and now has average speed. He’s not slow.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Average speed isn't getting you a 75% success rate
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
Slightly above average speed plus good baserunning will.
Chavy is 57/74 career (73.4%).
Nico - April 7, 2009
I always thought Chavez was pretty fast.
In any case Geren better not try that again unless Ellis can get a much bigger jump.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
I still say the blame lies with Ellis for not stopping
when he didn’t get the jump. He could have just waited a pitch.
Nico - April 7, 2009
OK. I'll buy that.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
The lineup: Ryan Sweeney CF, Orlando Cabrera SS, Jason Giambi DH, Nomar Garciaparra 1B, Eric Chavez 3B, Jack Cust RF, Kurt Suzuki C, Travis Buck LF, Mark Ellis 2B.
MoneyManWilliam - April 7, 2009
Well, Cust hitting sixth is better than him hitting eighth.
Rated-R Superstar - April 7, 2009
so Cust moves over zook interesting
robbo650 - April 7, 2009
This is a total L/R lineup
I prefer ones that are more OBP/OPS/worst hitter based, especially against a team whose three best short relievers are all right-handed.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Ya I don't fear Darren Oliver enough to care about LRLR here.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
No kidding - heck if it gets him in the game,
I’ll gladly put Cust, Giambi, and Chavy in a row just to make it happen.
Nico - April 7, 2009
Nomar cleanup
That’s different. I’m so not liking these lineups. Cabrera #2 vs. a RHP = Lame. Cust after the high OBP guys (Giambi, Chavez) = Lame. Buck batting 8th = And Cabrera’s batting 2nd???
Nico - April 7, 2009
I don't like these either. I'm getting annoyed with Geren.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
What the Fuck is Geren thinking?
mikev - April 7, 2009
New sigline!
OK not really
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
any one know the lineup?
Cust will take LF and Buck RF
robbo650 - April 7, 2009
oo nvm
robbo650 - April 7, 2009
i have a fantasy Q
should i drop Ianetta C from Colorado and pick up zook or keep Ianetta. i like to have A’s but Iannetta is ranked like 120 something.
robbo650 - April 7, 2009
I don't know fantasy that well, but I wouldn't think Suzuki's stats
would be very fantasy-friendly, especially hitting at the Coliseum 81 times.
Nico - April 7, 2009
ya and cathing 160 games

It’s scientific.

Haha. I don't get Warriors games. So I buy the league pass. I thought I was going to get A's games. Don't get those.
I can’t even buy league pass to watch the games because they are blacked out.
miggyk2 - April 7, 2009
what, no cust batting 8th?
DyeLongJustice - April 7, 2009
Geren's getting a little smarter each day
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
a couple more games and he'll be leadoff!
DyeLongJustice - April 7, 2009
I'm starting to feel lucky
when someone doesn’t hit into a double play—sad.
butler19 - April 7, 2009
It's a mini-win for all of us.
No shame in avoiding our biggest problem the last few years.

Please refrain from early negative comments about Cahill
if he struggles tonight. This is a risky move but it could pay huge dividends by the end of the season… if not tonight!
ohtobe21likehuston - April 7, 2009
I DON'T LIKE THE WAY HE'S WARMING UP!!!!!111
Nico - April 7, 2009
I'm a little worried about his control.
Still think it’s a nice risk to start him with the big club. We don’t have a lot of choices anyway.
ohtobe21likehuston - April 7, 2009
Nomar tried killing an angel right there
drink409 - April 7, 2009
I like him already
Hopefully he’ll learn to pick it at 1B.
ohtobe21likehuston - April 7, 2009

Helloooo 1st - April 7, 2009
He's a true Athletic

DyeLongJustice - April 7, 2009
so
how many innings until the A’s actually get a score
or get man to third even. or did that happen yesterday?
closetasfan - April 7, 2009
No. No one got to third yesterday.
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
We had a few runners reach second base, but I don’t recall anyone reaching third base.
Rated-R Superstar - April 7, 2009
Only Chavy made it to 3B

Hope to be back for the 2nd, have fun.
Baseball is better single, live it while you can.
paradox - April 7, 2009
i love how mlbtv sucks tonight
buckfan6 - April 7, 2009
Disable Nexdef, if you have the premium version.
It’s slightly watchable now, and the delay is actually not ridiculous.
danmerqury - April 7, 2009
Doesn’t Bob Geren wear No. 53?
Rated-R Superstar - April 7, 2009
Not any more
WaddellCanseco - April 7, 2009
What does he wear now? 17?
Rated-R Superstar - April 7, 2009
He is trying to be too fine with his lineup.
ohtobe21likehuston - April 7, 2009
So you're saying he needs lessons
from Barry Zito on how to be FITZ?
cityplANner - April 7, 2009
Last two lineups are the SHITZ
ohtobe21likehuston - April 7, 2009
It was pretty considerate of OCab, Giambi, and Nomah to get out quickly
So we could see K-Hill sooner.
worldblee - April 7, 2009
Darn, K-Walk
worldblee - April 7, 2009

He wasn’t.
