After having some control issues early in the game, Trevor Cahill has settled down, keeping the Mariners off the board. In parallel, the A's hitters are making Bedard look like something special, matching Cahill zero for zero.
We head on to the 7th inning with the two teams scoreless, and the A's needing to go out on top to avoid being swept on Easter Sunday. Let's see what Cahill has in mind for our heros...

Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
Definitely NOT Quarantine. It sucked.
mikev - April 12, 2009
I nominate "28 Days Later"
A serious take on the genre.
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
not zombies though
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
Well, fastness aside, it's fairly zombie-ish
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
they're not undead, though
I was on your side, until a someone explained to me at some length why it is not a zombie film.
Basically, because they’re ill rather than resurrected, they’re not zombies.
Or something.
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
It's a fair cop
But still, for all intents and purposes, it functions like a zombie flick.
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
Don't they kill and eat other non-infected?
Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
They kill
I don’t recall eating. It was more vomiting blood onto their faces and such.
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
still, soundtrack was annoying.
Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
the soundtrack had mogwai on it
1!!!111111111111
hence = brilliant.
zombie / non zombie arguments aside, i think it’s a great film
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
Shot on DV too
pretty amazing.
brian.only - April 12, 2009
wasn't the music I was concerned about.
It was the “ambient” sound. It was grating in the theaters, literally headache-inducing.
Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
might be the case
I didn’t see it in the theatres, so, yknow.
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
It t'was.
Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
which just broke my English- loving heart to type.
Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
eh, England's ok.
It’s not worth getting upset about
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
yeah, but still
basically, you have to be the living dead to be a zombie.
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
they weren't?
what were they?
Leopold Bloom - April 12, 2009
people who had the Rage Virus
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
Yeah.
Shaun of the Dead is fantastic

Zonis - April 12, 2009
This has to be the most frustrating series in quite some time!!!
It is a series that we could have easily swept instead it looks like we can get rolled.
By the way why no Garciaparra? I thought that he was supposed to be here to hit the lefties.
I would think Bedard would be one of the best left handed pitchers that we will face.
I apologize if this issue has been addressed.
DANG THIS IS A FRUSTRATING SERIES!!!
Yellowhorse - April 12, 2009
Chavez should be sitting; Garciaparra should be playing
lenscrafters - April 12, 2009
Absolutely. Why not use today's game as the day to rest Chavez
I sure would have liked Nomar up there a few innings ago when we had runners on base opposed to Chavez.
Well, this could be chalked up to poor managing. Then again there could be an issue that I am not aware of.

Joey C. - April 12, 2009
Dude hasn't posted an OPS ovef .800
since 2004. Isn’t that wild?
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
It's unfortunate, that's for sure
Knowing what we know about his injury history, I’m not really surprised at that fact. And anyway, I’ll take him over Hannahan any day.
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
That's some damning
with faint praise if I’ve ever seen it.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always appreciate what Chavez once was, and by all accounts he’s a nice guy.
But there’s not much reason to believe he’s a major league hitter anymore.
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
yea, but its also a bit misleading.
Dude OPSed .794 and .786 in 2005 and 2006, and he hasn’t really been healthy since then.
Darryl P - April 12, 2009
Well, that's the point
.800’s a low benchmark to begin with…..and he hasn’t been healthy.
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
there's no way anybody could tell the difference between a .794 and .800 OPS hitter of the course of a season.
it’s essentially the same thing. And for the A’s, and third baseman .800 OPS would be only somethign to dream about.
Darryl P - April 12, 2009
That says less about Chavez and more about the lack of a solid 3B in the organization for the last several years.
mikev - April 12, 2009
you are correct.
poor point to make on my part. But still. It is ridiculous to say that Chavez hasn’t OPSed .800 since 2004 when he put up .794 and .786 lines in the seasons immediately following. It’s just using the number .800 as a completely arbitrary cut off.
All the same, i will agree with the premise that Chavez has been injured crap for a long time.
Darryl P - April 12, 2009
My point wasn't really analytical.
I used a goofy stat that, while misleading, nevertheless does illustrate the general downward trend in Eric Chavez’s career.
This:
“All the same, i will agree with the premise that Chavez has been injured crap for a long time.”
is all I was getting at.
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
yea, i get what you were saying.
I was just surprised when you listed that stat, so i went to look it up and thought it was worth mentioning that he effectively did OPS .800 in ’05 and ’06.
Darryl P - April 12, 2009
800's not that low for a 3rd baseman
Only six AL 3rd basemen OPS’d over .800 in 2008… A-Rod, Longoria, Blalock, Blake, Mora, Guillen.
If Chavez is close to 2006 form this season, we couldn’t do much better.
phastphill - April 12, 2009
Right, and "good" Chavez is better than all but A-Rod in that list.
mikev - April 12, 2009
This
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
Nah, Longoria is also better
lenscrafters - April 12, 2009

worldblee - April 12, 2009
No PH for Davis??
lenscrafters - April 12, 2009
Bring in Croz for some D! yea baby.
Ovale Fan - April 12, 2009
4 pitches, 2 outs
Zonis - April 12, 2009
there could be 24 and they still would end up with the same result
Trainman - April 12, 2009
Davis is going to hit.
Rated-R Superstar - April 12, 2009
And Geren is having Davis hit
so off to the 9th!
Zonis - April 12, 2009
You'll all bite your tongues when Davis homers.
mikev - April 12, 2009
Davis' Defense
is important to the advancement of this franchise guys, he’s going to hit.
Hit4TheCycle - April 12, 2009
He got decent wood on the ball at least
worldblee - April 12, 2009
By which I mean he got it out of the infield
worldblee - April 12, 2009
Free Chris Denorfia.
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
I'll take it!
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
With proof of purchase?
mikev - April 12, 2009
Dammit
Who needs to go Easter Egg hunting when the A’s are laying all these goose eggs?
Hit4TheCycle - April 12, 2009
So we're 6 games in, and the scores have been:
0-3 L
6-4 W
6-4 W
4-5 L
5-8 L
0-1 L
Shut out twice already.
3.5 Runs Per Game.
Zonis - April 12, 2009
was there a rewind of April 2008?
kapers - April 12, 2009
a bit prmature to call this a shut out.
Darryl P - April 12, 2009
Maybe they'll swap out Giambi for Crosby and we'll W- er wait... oh...
brian.only - April 12, 2009
Would have been good to see Bailey
last night
worldblee - April 12, 2009
Or Castillo pitch well. He killed us.
drink409 - April 12, 2009
He was great one inning
horrible the next
worldblee - April 12, 2009
yeah, it was odd, that
he looked SO good the first one he pitched, and the second, wow. Though, Crosby’s error didn’t help, huh
alea iacta est - April 12, 2009
To be fair, he wasn't that bad. The inning started with an error, that coulda affected him a bit.
and the walk was a close call.
javaball - April 12, 2009
I woulda left him in to sort out the mess, rather than rushing in Ziegler.
Casillia got strike out stuff.
javaball - April 12, 2009
Wha?
Did Jairo change his name again?
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
Maybe he thought
this guy.
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
Whew!
Good catch, Ryan.

mikev - April 12, 2009

drink409 - April 12, 2009
looks like Aradsma
Morrow blew his save op.
But doesn’t matter, Bedard will be out there.
Zonis - April 12, 2009
Bedard must be going back out
KK said no one warming up in Bullpen
Trainman - April 12, 2009
Yes, Bedard is staying in for the ninth.
Rated-R Superstar - April 12, 2009
He's been pretty effective
3 LOB’s- he’s killing us.
brian.only - April 12, 2009
Love me some Bailey!
brian.only - April 12, 2009
I think the A's today are trying to answer the question...
… of what a lineup composed of 9 Brad Ausmuses would look like.
Let’s go, fellas. One run and we’re in extras.
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
where's Scutaro when you need him
oh that’s right. doing it for another team
kapers - April 12, 2009

louismg - April 12, 2009
Don't like it either
But now Giambi and Holliday have a shot. O-cab is a DP candidate
baseballgirl - April 12, 2009
Hey, you know who's not? And you knwo who hits a shit ton of homers? And you know who would have just been up had he been 2nd in the order?
Me either.
mikev - April 12, 2009
agreed
phastphill - April 12, 2009
esp. witht the 3rd best hitter against mariners, or whatever that stat was
phastphill - April 12, 2009
I don't like it either. I'd rather they PH for Cabrera with Buck.
WaddellCanseco - April 12, 2009
Oops sorry, I mean let Orlando swing and PH Buck for Rajai
WaddellCanseco - April 12, 2009
Not with a lefty on the mound
maybe Nomar though.

Sack bunt.
ElQuesoCapitan - April 12, 2009
playing for a tie?
Zonis - April 12, 2009

The way they’ve been hitting today? I’ll take pushing it to extras and getting into that bullpen.
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
+1
baseballgirl - April 12, 2009
Well if we're bunting this is the guy on the A's I want to do it
vignette17 - April 12, 2009
Good, good bunt. I didn't want Cabrera to fuck up and get a base hit or something.
mikev - April 12, 2009
DP is a major concern with this team
Joey C. - April 12, 2009
Awesome that we have to bunt
to avoid our own suck.
walk off bunt - April 12, 2009
In other news

I don’t think bunting was a food ideea the way we have been owened today
Trainman - April 12, 2009
time for Giambi to make good his promise and provide some run supports for the kids
javaball - April 12, 2009
Strange they took out Bedard vs a lefty
WaddellCanseco - April 12, 2009
