A's Pitching Continues to Shine in Mariners' Rout

A’s 12, M’s 1

Today’s game had all of the makings of a fun regular season contest; nearly all of the A’s pitching was fantastic, the hitting was all there, and the game could have ended in a good brawl between the A’s and the Mariners, who apparently are not pleased about Jason Giambi’s return to the AL West. Giambi was hit by a pitch, not once, not twice, but three times during the game (twice by Washburn, once by Aardsma).

In addition to the HBP drama, the game also featured a highlight reel from my pony in the race for an outfield spot; Rajai Davis, who went 4-4 in the leadoff spot with 3 runs scored and an RBI.

While the Seattle pitcher count nearly totaled double-digits (Washburn, Hull, Lowe, Aardsma, Walker, Lugo, Thomas, Munoz, Stark), the A’s were very economical; throwing five pitchers, who allowed seven combined hits, and a single run, looking better and better every game out.

Edgar Gonzalez started the game, going three strong innings to pick up the win, allowing two hits and striking out two. He was replaced by Josh Outman, who struggled a bit in his 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and a run. He did strike out three. Kevin Cameron faced one batter to help Outman out of a jam, but the clear pitching highlight belonged to Vincent Mazzaro, who blazed through the seventh inning; striking out swinging all three batters he faced. His second inning was about as good; fly out, line out, ground out. Blevins took it home for the A’s, finishing the ninth uneventfully to reduce his Spring ERA.

The A’s scored early, and often. Holliday singled in the game’s first run in the first, and Chavez followed up with a sac fly. Suzuki and Holliday singled in two more runs in the second, and Davis doubled in a fifth run in the third.

The A’s resumed scoring in the sixth inning, on sac flies by Matt Carson and Chris Carter, and broke the game wide open with four more in the seventh on a single by Joel Galarraga and a double by Sean Doolittle (who went 2-2 with 3 RBI’s). Ben Copeland capped off the scoring with a RBI single in the eighth for the A’s 12th run, and 16th hit.

So, in conclusion, I think Rajai Davis has made a strong case for himself in front of America so far. His number is (866) IDO…oh wait. Wrong show.

Lots of action this weekend as the A’s play two games, and Team USA plays its first game tomorrow at 11AM.

can't get too much A's baseball
I vote for him

but I dion’t know where to text…

Great job BBG

Maybe Spring Training should be like American Idol.

I’d vote for that!

Nomar speaking at the press conference

“when I was with Chicago I’d always been a shortstop. But I went to the manager and told him I’d play elsewhere if needed…I’d do whatever they needed for us to win.”

Apparently Crosby doesn't feel the same way

He doesn’t seem too happy. Apparently he had a meeting today and he was asked to get used to being the utility infielder and possibly outfielder and he didn’t like the idea (Slusser reported this in her blog). I always pulled for Bobby but he needs to get his head straight and realize his real value to this team / league, suck it up and prove himself in whatever chances he gets.

I understand his disappointment

but really, he’s making $5,5 million…he should at least be open to doing whatever the club asks him to do to help the team. Everyone knows he’s a shortstop. At least he’d show the rest of the league that he’s a professional and is willing to do what’s needed…that might make him a little more attractive to other clubs as well.

Shooty Babbitt talking at length about the Crosby situation

and Buan will share some of his conversation with Crosby. (this is all on the Extra Innings postgame show on the radio.)

Isn't that the character from Happy Gilmore?
Right. Needs to show maturity,

If he’s thinking of going elsewhere.

Bobby should realize...

if he stays with the A’s as a utility infielder (and, stays healthy), he’ll get more AB’s in 2009 than he ever has in his career. Chavez? Cabrera? Ellis? Nomah?

C’mon, Bobby… use your head, man! You’ll play in 162 games this year with that list of walking wounded waiting to happen. Just follow the path of Marco. Be happy you’re making $5.5 million.

Crosby's suggested mantra: "Jay Payton"
He's going to wear Number 1

First “A” since Billy in ’82.

"Third, first, short, to me it’s, `What do you want me to do to win?"’ Garciaparra said Friday.
where did you see that?

Sorry ’bout that.

oh no problem

i wasn’t trying to be that guy. just curious. i actually saw it right after i posted…shoulda waited.

Love the last paragraph

Rajai is my homeboy

I believe tomorrow's game is on the new MLB TV network
And mlb.tv according to the A's website.

Yay!

off-topic, but are the A's still on FM radio?

I could only find these ST games on 860 AM… Does this mean no FM station this year?

I don't think so
meaning, no FM this year
dang.

Those AM channels are weak, can only get them in my car. For the office or at home only the FM signal was good.. Last year I listened to all the A’s day-games at work, it was so great.

But good news for people with Comcast who can’t receive channel 89 (A’s new channel) — I called Comcast and you can pick up a free digital converter box that will give you the new A’s channel (plus several more I imagine).

nice to see the mariners are still a class act. giambi hit 3 times? in ST?

i guess class goes out the door when you suck!

i wonder if mario can give them mariners a magic mushroom?

I am all for continuing the Rajai-fair
a? you are in colorado?

was at false island lodge 50 miles above sitka last summer. AMAZING place.

jinx on rajai.

yo, in colorado.

I do miss southeast Alaska. Looking forward to some Rockies games and seeing Street and company.

These guys wish they could of helps score some runs today...

Nomar looks like an excited fan
nice pics

they look good in green and gold.

A bit testy?

Just finished reading Slusser’s latest piece which focuses on Crosby’s reaction to becoming a utility infielder and he had this to say:

“I understand that Billy is the boss and so is Bob, so they can put me in the lineup wherever they want and all I can do is be ready.”

That’s right Bobby, so enough of this “I’m a starting SS” BS. You’re not fooling anyone.

Then I saw this quote from Duchscherer on the subject of going back to the pen if his injuries worsen:

“No chance. I wouldn’t do it.”

Wow. I don’t really have anything to say about that except wow.

honestly

Dukes public attitude is disappointingly selfish, but I dont blame him at all in this case because jesus christ I agree with him. Even if it was 100% chance healthy out of the bullpen and 40% chance healthy starting, I think the net impact would still make the risk of starting him worthwhile.

I agree

But that doesn’t mean you make that public quote. Something along the lines of “I just got back into starting and I’d be really disappointed to go back to the pen” would be miles better than the original gem.
