Open Thread; Spring Training Game 27: Padres at A's (cont)

Well, the much-anticipated start by Trevor Cahill could have gone better, had he not still struggled with his control. Of course, the 3-run bomb he gave up was probably a strike, so there is that, but he gave up four runs. Blevins didn't give up any (breaking news this spring), but Devine gave up a homerun for the Padres' 5th run.

The A's have done exactly nothing against Peavy; 5-0 Padres, bottom of the sixth.

I just got back from dinner and apparently, I’ve missed a disaster. What happened in the game?

you left.

They quit trying.

Thanks a lot.

What a connection.

Let’s all rag on choppy now.

Silencio nino de queso

I will never leave during an A's game again.
Now burn the saint card...
Scott Hairston.
So much space...
-1 spaces
not so

it’s like an expanding envelope of space;

as the space time balloon expands, it stretches, creating new space.

oh yes.

buy that gyre will eventually contract, no?
depends, really

on the starting points

Yikes. Mark got hit.
{signs D'Angelo Jimenez}
[gets arrested for forging D'Angelo Jimenez's signature on a check]
Ellis HBP

2 on, 1 out.

Trainer coming out
No, that's Jack Kevorkian
Don't go breaking unicorn now.
Kiki Dee.
i couldn't if i tried
But AIE, if I get restless?
Not only the 3-run HR off Cahill, but it seemed like

that inning every ball was hit in the air. Considering he got through the first 3 scoreless innings going to a 3-ball count on everyone, I’d say a bad outing overall.

Cahill's Groundball/Flyball ratio

before tonight was surreal…

not so much, tonight.

We might be overreacting to one bad game.
WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE IN SACRAMENTO!!!
better than Florida.

{marginally}

Game? I'm focusing exclusively on the one pitch to Hairston.
already posted this in the last thread

but I didn’t see that the new thread had opened up.

This game makes me think that the A’s have some soul searching to do when it comes to the rotation going into the season – they keep reiterating the mantra that they "have quality young pitchers" in the system, so why would they look elsewhere for rotation help, yet, they’ve set themselves up for short term contention with acquisitions of Nomar, Giambi, Holliday, and Cabrera -

With the Angels rotation banged up also, they could really make an impact if they got the right arm or two to anchor their rotation. I think they should commit to contention – trade Mazzaro and couple other lower tier prospects for Peavy – we know he can still pitch, and maybe he’d consider coming to and A.L. contender where he could really make a difference.

I can has Peavy for Crosby, please?

Fine, me throws in Curtis Thigpen!

Fine, they can have Copeland too
Sigh - you drives a hard bargain but otay!
Well

when you look at what the Padres wanted from the Cubs, the A’s could put together a far more impressive package without taking a real hit to their system.

Peavy

because his name was mentioned in trade rumors before, but there’s got to be other guys out there, potentially on the market that could help this rotation out.

It's not inconceivable that the teams could find a win-win deal

The Padres are truly in “no man’s land” as an organization and they’d do well to swap Peavy for some decent young talent. Not sure exactly what the package would look like, but it’s interesting to ponder.

He's not exactly cheap though
Yea

I think he’s about 15-16 M per year, not too bad considering how good he is but I don’t think the A’s can absorb that kind of money in the budget. Even if we could get the Padres to take Crosby I still don’t think the A’s could afford Peavey

he's not

terribly expensive either -

he wouldn’t even be the highest paid player on our team…at least not this year.

I'm thinking the A's would have to turn around and trade him

this off-season. They can afford him short term but not for the duration of his contract – the A’s know it’s not smart to pay any starting pitcher that much because of the injury risk.

That would really be "going for it"
it would have to include

one of GMAC, I’m sure, and most likely to be dispensed via trade from that gaggle would have to be Mazzaro – his last start aside, he had an impressive spring drawing attention from lots of scouts with his fastball/sinker. Throw in a Javier Herrera or even a Travis Buck, maybe Pennington and another pitcher.

That doesn't sound like much for the Pads

He’s got the No-trade too

sounds like we'll have to kidnap him, then
yeah well

they were looking at lesser prospects from the Cubs. Yeah – I think he might consider a trade to an A.L. contender on the west coast, though. He was apparently willing to consider the Angels…

I think Peavy would ok a deal to Oakland

But I doubt Mazzaro/Buck would get him. If you’re the Padres, why settle for less than Cahill or Anderson when you’re talking about a Cy Young caliber pitcher?

I doubt he'd OK that trade if he thought he'd be traded in the offseason
Because it's so fun to be part of the Padres these days?

He still has the limited no-trade clause, so he can’t be spun to the Nationals.

I think he likes it there.
They were

willing to trade him to the Cubs for a few bags of baseballs, I think they might overvalue Mazzaro based on his spring and his AA numbers. Who knows…Maybe the A’s throw Powell or a guy like Carter into the mix.

What?

If they were willing to trade him for a bag of baseballs then why is he still in San Diego?

I'm thinking Brewers
I think the Biggest Wrench

in the way of any trade with San Diego is the flux in their front office (Alderson stepping down, Moorad taking an ownership stake) Maybe the new ownership doesn’t want to trade their best player???

Their division is certainly winnable.
Not by the Padres, it isn't.

70 wins won’t take even the NL West.

They'd have to improve of course
Why not send a fax saying,

“Sandy said it’s fine to do a Peavy/Crosby swap – can someone return this paperwork, signed, please? Thanks.” They may not figure it out.

Or it may be signed "Donald Duck"
That's the Angels.
I would guess it might take more like

one of Gio/Mazzaro (I actually think that Gio would be a good fit in their park), a guy like HRod (a big upside guy, but might not get there) a good position prospect (Cunningham, Dolittle?) and a lesser position guy say Eric Patterson (Pads seemed to want a middle IFer if I recall correctly). That is a deal the A’s could live with, and would give the Pads 4 young guys all of whom could be guys that would make their major league roster in the near future.

I don't really want to trade Cunningham with Holliday leaving after 2009.
But do you want Peavy with Duke leaving this year?
I'm OK with Cahill and Anderson leading the rotation from 2010 onward

I’d rather spend on hitting

yeah

but I’d really feel ok over the next 4 years with a rotation of:

Peavy
Anderson
Cahill
G. Gonzalez
Simmons

I thought Gio was being traded for Peavy
i think they asked for Mazzaro instead
Stupid Rotoworld got it wrong
Me either

but we still have Buck, Sweeney, Cust, Davis and then some of the guys in the low minors eventually, so we should still be fine — if necessary we could start putting Carter/Dolittle in the OF if that was where we needed them to play

Yeah, with Sweeney, Buck, and others,

Cunningham shouldn’t be a “deal breaker” – I actually don’t want the A’s to trade him, but for the right move I could live with it.

I guess they could put Doolittle in LF
they've

already started that, haven’t they? I mean last year, and in the AFL?

Yes but this time it counts
Sweeney GsIDP. Rally dead.

5-0 SD after 6.

he learned that from Crosby.
Someone threw bobby juice on sweeney?
Ewwwwww
don't worry.

Giambi will talk to him all night and make him swallow his own tongue.

That's leadership.
That's why them brought him back.

He’s a pro.

Definitely a "positive" influence
Springer in, K's Gerut
Is Chavez out of the game yet?
Heck, no!

We could win this sucker!

/channeling Mensa manager

You mean "out for the season yet?"
No, I meant "the game" as in "the profession of baseball"
I think he can still coach
I was going to say he can't coach third base

because of waving the right arm, but then I realized he could still coach third base for the A’s.

2 K's for Springer

5-0 SD after 6.5

I'll not be happy if this Hill guy can pitch for a month.
Do you think Manny would've done

the sack races with them on their Astroturf back yard?

Holliday GsIDP.

5-0 after 7.

This game sucks.

Indeed.

Not as bad as Gonzaga though

are they playing poorly or is NC just that good?
Not sure. We got KU-MSU here.
Edgar come in the game.

Hide the children.

That's our #2 starter!
Just when you

think this game possibly could not get any worse

Jerome Williams.

This pit I’ve fallen in is mighty comfortable

Edgar gets a fly out and a 6-4-3

No runs!!!!

Witchcraft

Only explanation

And what do you do with witchcraft?
NOMAR HOMERS!!!

On a 3-0 Pitch! 5-1 SD

CUST HOMERS!!!!!

5-2!

On an 0-2 curveball
First Let's Go Oakland chant I've heard this spring...
are you sure it wasn't

“let’s go!”
“home now!”

Buck walks with one away

Some drunk dude just walked by my building screaming the lyrics to Touch Me by The Doors.

Sorry.

At least he wasn’t screaming one of those awful Ray Manzarek keyboard solos.

I think it's a sign.
Well if anyone can recognize a sign

it should be you

no kidding.

I make signs in my effing sleep.

And I’m not joking.

Well that should give you a bit more free time

during the day

your compassion is staggering.
No, I am pretty sure that it is the drunk guy that is staggering
your compassion is drunk!
That could explain a lot. lol
No, I'm pretty sure it's a drunk guy
I could make him a sign with Doors lyrics.

That way he doesn’t disturb Ryan and his neighbors.

Doors lyrics are pretty disturbing

I’m moving to Nevada City in May to do an organic farming internship. Can you make me a sign that says “Please don’t rob this building until May?”

yup.
Thx.
is that throught the organic farming intership people?

they have a proper name, right? i was thinking of going to spain the summer after this to do some of that. let us know how it goes!

My wife found them through ATTRA.
So you think all robbers are literate?
Is this logic?
Not if I posted it
Well, you rarely hear,

“Give I the money!” or “I has a gun!!!!”

Me hears those far too often
Me, more seldomly.
All robbers are literate.

Are literates live in California.
Russ lives in California.
Russ once stole money from his grandmother’s coin purse to buy illegal narcotics.
Therefore, Russ is literate.

is it the corpse of Jim Morrison?

He was drunk most of the time he was writing that crap

and we're back to zombies.
hey, it's not necessarily a zombie

it might be animatronics.

robot zombie
Good call, Chop

I’ll forgive you for going ot dinner now.

Regardless, still zombies.

Time to find my laser

Yup.

Zombie shootout time.

Like through electric pulses or something like that?
hey, it's not my army of the undead

i’m still trying to uncover the full story

You just do your reporting.

We’re gonna go load up on munitions. We’ll meet you at the pub later.

i was going for a more sympathetic angle

shuffling bands of evil have such a bad reputation, these days

And seriously,

why couldn’t you just shuffle along with them and play zombie? How would they know? They’re brain dead, right?

I'm sure they

follow commands from a zombie commander of sorts, so they must at least have some brain function

So...

if we kill the head zombie…

But what if there

are multiple head zombies? Sort of like those horcrux things in Harry Potter? And they can’t die until you kill all the head zombies.

When I said some brain function

I didn’t mean they could come up with plans like that.

There’s one head zombie. If he dies, we win.

I think it's good we're discussing these things now,

so when it does happen, we’ll have a zombie plan.

(shhh.)

That movie’s not come out yet.

SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE.

[insert overreaction]
(insert more Harry Potter spoilers)
can i try my caesium joke again, then?

i do like bases

i think they exhibit more of a group consciousness

so like, the more of them there are, the smarter they are.

It's only crap if you're not drunk
E-Gon just struck someone out looking.

Weird.

Not so weird

Depends on where they were looking

Someone flashed the batter?

Was it Alyssa Milano?

okay im board with peavy

he’s signed for at least 3 more yrs

look at the crap cubs were offering pie, cedeno, hart, marshall, etc..A’s could destroy that offer and still have a top farm system

i build a deal around mazzaro or gio and cunningham…hate to give up cunningham but with buck, sweeney, doolittle, brown, sulentic etc there is depth there

Only if they throw in Emil
So what do you do with Duchscherer?

Do they even know what they’re looking for?

Heave ho and weigh the anchor?
Julie Haener? I think she comes in around 120 pounds.
That's a lot.
No, a lot has cars

Please try to pay attention.

I was distracted by the sign with Doors lyrics
What about the black guy who does (did?) channel 2?

I bet he weighs more.

Dennis Richmond?
Yeah, him.

He still around? He’s gotta weigh more than 120.

He was there when I lived in Oakland 25 years ago
He's retired now
Another K looking!

5-2 after 8.5

2 excellent innings for E-Gon. Seriously.

Quick! Let's overreact!
WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!
He said overreact, not overact.
AN? Overreact?
WHAT??? SOMEONE OVERREACTED???????

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

like caesium in water

Petit and Giambi strick out

We’re fighting to the finish!

A's lose

I love that.

Jackass.

So what's it now

10 straight losses?

I miss my bang bang sparkles.

{Forgets to use reply button, kills discussion}
This is getting old
Gettin all the losses out of the way now

So we can get a winning streak going and build some momentum for the season.
