Well, the much-anticipated start by Trevor Cahill could have gone better, had he not still struggled with his control. Of course, the 3-run bomb he gave up was probably a strike, so there is that, but he gave up four runs. Blevins didn't give up any (breaking news this spring), but Devine gave up a homerun for the Padres' 5th run.
The A's have done exactly nothing against Peavy; 5-0 Padres, bottom of the sixth.

I just got back from dinner and apparently, I’ve missed a disaster. What happened in the game?

Not only the 3-run HR off Cahill, but it seemed like
that inning every ball was hit in the air. Considering he got through the first 3 scoreless innings going to a 3-ball count on everyone, I’d say a bad outing overall.
Nico - March 27, 2009
Cahill's Groundball/Flyball ratio

Game? I'm focusing exclusively on the one pitch to Hairston.
Nico - March 27, 2009
already posted this in the last thread
but I didn’t see that the new thread had opened up.
This game makes me think that the A’s have some soul searching to do when it comes to the rotation going into the season – they keep reiterating the mantra that they "have quality young pitchers" in the system, so why would they look elsewhere for rotation help, yet, they’ve set themselves up for short term contention with acquisitions of Nomar, Giambi, Holliday, and Cabrera -
With the Angels rotation banged up also, they could really make an impact if they got the right arm or two to anchor their rotation. I think they should commit to contention – trade Mazzaro and couple other lower tier prospects for Peavy – we know he can still pitch, and maybe he’d consider coming to and A.L. contender where he could really make a difference.
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
I can has Peavy for Crosby, please?
Fine, me throws in Curtis Thigpen!
Nico - March 27, 2009
Fine, they can have Copeland too
AsFanInLA - March 27, 2009
Sigh - you drives a hard bargain but otay!
Nico - March 27, 2009
Well
when you look at what the Padres wanted from the Cubs, the A’s could put together a far more impressive package without taking a real hit to their system.
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
Peavy
because his name was mentioned in trade rumors before, but there’s got to be other guys out there, potentially on the market that could help this rotation out.
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
It's not inconceivable that the teams could find a win-win deal
The Padres are truly in “no man’s land” as an organization and they’d do well to swap Peavy for some decent young talent. Not sure exactly what the package would look like, but it’s interesting to ponder.
Nico - March 27, 2009
He's not exactly cheap though
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
Yea
I think he’s about 15-16 M per year, not too bad considering how good he is but I don’t think the A’s can absorb that kind of money in the budget. Even if we could get the Padres to take Crosby I still don’t think the A’s could afford Peavey
OkayJay81 - March 27, 2009
he's not
terribly expensive either -
he wouldn’t even be the highest paid player on our team…at least not this year.
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
I'm thinking the A's would have to turn around and trade him
this off-season. They can afford him short term but not for the duration of his contract – the A’s know it’s not smart to pay any starting pitcher that much because of the injury risk.
Nico - March 27, 2009
That would really be "going for it"
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
it would have to include
one of GMAC, I’m sure, and most likely to be dispensed via trade from that gaggle would have to be Mazzaro – his last start aside, he had an impressive spring drawing attention from lots of scouts with his fastball/sinker. Throw in a Javier Herrera or even a Travis Buck, maybe Pennington and another pitcher.
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
That doesn't sound like much for the Pads
He’s got the No-trade too
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
sounds like we'll have to kidnap him, then
alea iacta est - March 27, 2009
yeah well
they were looking at lesser prospects from the Cubs. Yeah – I think he might consider a trade to an A.L. contender on the west coast, though. He was apparently willing to consider the Angels…
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
I think Peavy would ok a deal to Oakland
But I doubt Mazzaro/Buck would get him. If you’re the Padres, why settle for less than Cahill or Anderson when you’re talking about a Cy Young caliber pitcher?
Nico - March 27, 2009
I doubt he'd OK that trade if he thought he'd be traded in the offseason
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
Because it's so fun to be part of the Padres these days?
He still has the limited no-trade clause, so he can’t be spun to the Nationals.
Nico - March 27, 2009
I think he likes it there.
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
They were
willing to trade him to the Cubs for a few bags of baseballs, I think they might overvalue Mazzaro based on his spring and his AA numbers. Who knows…Maybe the A’s throw Powell or a guy like Carter into the mix.
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
What?
If they were willing to trade him for a bag of baseballs then why is he still in San Diego?
Helloooo 1st - March 27, 2009
I'm thinking Brewers
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
I think the Biggest Wrench
in the way of any trade with San Diego is the flux in their front office (Alderson stepping down, Moorad taking an ownership stake) Maybe the new ownership doesn’t want to trade their best player???
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
Their division is certainly winnable.
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
Not by the Padres, it isn't.
70 wins won’t take even the NL West.
Nico - March 27, 2009
They'd have to improve of course
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
Why not send a fax saying,
“Sandy said it’s fine to do a Peavy/Crosby swap – can someone return this paperwork, signed, please? Thanks.” They may not figure it out.
Nico - March 27, 2009
Or it may be signed "Donald Duck"
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
That's the Angels.
Nico - March 27, 2009
I would guess it might take more like
one of Gio/Mazzaro (I actually think that Gio would be a good fit in their park), a guy like HRod (a big upside guy, but might not get there) a good position prospect (Cunningham, Dolittle?) and a lesser position guy say Eric Patterson (Pads seemed to want a middle IFer if I recall correctly). That is a deal the A’s could live with, and would give the Pads 4 young guys all of whom could be guys that would make their major league roster in the near future.
AsFanInLA - March 27, 2009
I don't really want to trade Cunningham with Holliday leaving after 2009.
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
But do you want Peavy with Duke leaving this year?
Nico - March 27, 2009
I'm OK with Cahill and Anderson leading the rotation from 2010 onward
I’d rather spend on hitting
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
yeah
but I’d really feel ok over the next 4 years with a rotation of:
Peavy
Anderson
Cahill
G. Gonzalez
Simmons
oakballnack - March 27, 2009
I thought Gio was being traded for Peavy
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
i think they asked for Mazzaro instead
alea iacta est - March 27, 2009
Stupid Rotoworld got it wrong
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
Me either
but we still have Buck, Sweeney, Cust, Davis and then some of the guys in the low minors eventually, so we should still be fine — if necessary we could start putting Carter/Dolittle in the OF if that was where we needed them to play
AsFanInLA - March 27, 2009
Yeah, with Sweeney, Buck, and others,
Cunningham shouldn’t be a “deal breaker” – I actually don’t want the A’s to trade him, but for the right move I could live with it.
Nico - March 27, 2009
I guess they could put Doolittle in LF
WaddellCanseco - March 27, 2009
they've
already started that, haven’t they? I mean last year, and in the AFL?
