Final Score: Royals 8, A's 3
At the moment, if you're vying for a spot in the Oakland A's rotation it appears the worst thing you can do is to pitch. No sooner have Vin Mazzaro and Edgar Gonzalez written their tickets to AAA, up steps Josh Outman with a chance to prove that he's the "best of the rest" in a rapidly thinning field of contenders.
1st inning: 5 hits, 4 ER.
2nd inning: Grand Slam (to Mike Aviles).
Outman's line for the evening: 3.1 IP, 8 hits, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.
Oops.
On the "better news" front, Sean Gallagher pitched 4.2 IP of scoreless relief, allowing 6 hits, but walking only 1 while striking out 3. In losing for the 7th straight time, Oakland managed only 5 hits off of Zack Greinke and three relievers: singles by Buck, Denorfia, Crosby, and Pennington, and a triple by Daric Barton.
Watch Brett Anderson's next outing carefully - if he turns in another solid effort, I have to think he'll win a spot in the Opening Day rotation. He just doesn't have a lot of competition anymore.

I was driving through the Sierra foothills this evening
and missed my first game thread of the spring. So to make myself useful, and because pesto was being discussed in the game thread, enjoy:

Oh, and Daric Barton has been remarkably good.
vegAN ryAN - March 24, 2009
Especially with pine nuts
Nico - March 24, 2009
Daric Barton is good with Pine Nuts?
mikev - March 24, 2009
Awesome! You rock.
Tomorrow’s adventure might be Pesto! Just have to go back to the grocery store AGAIN! I need nuts!
ZigFan31 - March 24, 2009
AN's not sufficient?
Nico - March 24, 2009
I was hoping for some less virtual nuts.
ZigFan31 - March 24, 2009
I've been virtually nuts all my life
Nico - March 24, 2009
And we love you that way.
ZigFan31 - March 24, 2009
Dream on!

Hi.
Oh, wait.
mikev - March 24, 2009
Lol!
lynnzgal - March 24, 2009
Hummm...
not sure what to say here. In classic mikev fashion…i don’t want to get a CGV.
ZigFan31 - March 24, 2009
Tomorrow's adventure for me
will be to make a thread on AN all about me, so I can get a CGV strike and feel important like PT.
Oh, wait.

Weren't you proud that I posted a Gameday link?
pam5981 - March 24, 2009
ok....
Great news in Duke should be back in the rotation the 1st week of the season, and most teams don’t need a 5th starter until the end of april, early may.
1. Braden
2. Eveland
3. Gallagher
4. Cahill
5. Duke
E Gone – AAA
Outman – long relief by default because Blevins is just gettin light up every time he touches a ball right now.
Gio – In AAA or MLB depending on last couple of weeks. I would like to see him get another chance at starting, but maybe we need to David Price him in 08’ and use him in relief until he learns how to pitch.
ryanmoser - March 24, 2009
We actually do need a 5th starter right away this year.
vegAN ryAN - March 24, 2009
Anderson released?
No seriously, you don’t mention him – do you want Cahill over Anderson in the big league rotation?
Nico - March 24, 2009
In the future, please reply to the correct Ryan.
vegAN ryAN - March 24, 2009
In the future, please reply to the correct Nico

I think Anderson will be here before Cahill
but he may not be far behind. Might be good for two of them here together. They may pitch better and not feel as much pressure. They can feed off each other. You know if one has a bad game then the other can go out the next day and pick his teammate up.
Anyway, looking forward to these two and others hopefully sending many slegnA back to the dugout without touching any bases on the way.
Trainman - March 24, 2009
Or maybe if one pitches badly,
the other can intentionally get lit up even more so his friend doesn’t feel so bad!
Nico - March 24, 2009
LOL
That’s not what I or they have in mind
Trainman - March 24, 2009
I laughed
lol
supermarc589 - March 25, 2009
Unless Duke is really ready that first week, i think we'll see both cahill and anderson
And given where BB is— basically saying Braden may be the only lock— outside of duke— I still think Cahill and Anderson may be here to stay— and when Duke comes back one of Eveland or Gallagher could be moved out. Eveland may be on thin ice right now.
windyfelix - March 24, 2009
Why is Eveland on thin ice? He's the most reliable guy innings-wise.
WaddellCanseco - March 25, 2009
Ahem...K-HILL!!!! (does dance)
baseballgirl - March 24, 2009
Rec'd.
You have to see these moves, people.
pam5981 - March 24, 2009
BBG didn't dance at last AN day :(
mikev - March 24, 2009
She will this time.
pam5981 - March 25, 2009
I'm holding you to that.
You are personally responsible if BBG doesn’t dance.
mikev - March 25, 2009
She won't let me down.
pam5981 - March 25, 2009
I never thought I would miss Kirk Saarloos
But I do
ATarHeel - March 24, 2009
The guy gave me my first ball.
Sometimes its the little things.
ZigFan31 - March 24, 2009

mikev - March 24, 2009
Dude. Too cute.
pam5981 - March 25, 2009
More where that came from, too.
mikev - March 25, 2009
wow
ZigFan31 - March 25, 2009
Some of those little things stick with you a long time.
I got my first ball from Rick Monday, just about 41 years ago.
Monday Fan - March 24, 2009
Steve Dunning for me.
He looked about 50 years old.
WaddellCanseco - March 25, 2009
Yay!!! we held them without a run for 7 innings!!!
The f-ing rotation better come together!!!! (four this time!)
T-Money - March 24, 2009
Gallagher is really starting to bring it all together for me.
Too bad for Outman, and ,really, alot of the pitching right now. Jesus, what a horrible line for JO today! Yikes!
Anderson will start the season in the rotation, book it.
mrod - March 24, 2009
Im a big Gallagher fan.
I think hes got Dan Haren part 2 written all over him.
Syphon - March 24, 2009
Holy Crap
really?
ATarHeel - March 24, 2009
He's growing the hair for it.
mikev - March 25, 2009
Meh
That comp doesn’t really do it for me. Haren’s always had a BB/9 under 2 in all his minor league seasons (which, after accounting for the fact that he also has really good stuff, indicates a pitcher who can develop into something really good). Gallagher doesn’t come close to that in his minor league seasons.
Point being, I don’t think Gallagher has the control to be another Haren.
lenscrafters - March 25, 2009
He the second I posted that I knew this response was coming.
I was more referring to his results. Not necessarily how he gets them. I think in Gallaghers prime he can put up Haren like stats. He will never have the BB:9 that Haren does but he could allow less hit and strike out more.
Syphon - March 25, 2009
I agree...
there seem to be few here on AN who see Gallagher as a #1. Aside from Cahill, I see Sean with the most potential for #1 among the current crop. Anderson’s a solid #2. Braden a good #3. Eveland… got potential…. gotta see more before I decide if he’s a 3/4 tweener or a 4/5 tweener.
FoolshGame22 - March 25, 2009
Slusser reporting that Outman has not yet been eliminated
from consideration for the rotation, according to Geren:
OaklandSi - March 25, 2009
He can't be eliminated. Then it would be just Anderson and Cahill for 2 spots if Duke was hurt.
The competition would be over.
WaddellCanseco - March 25, 2009
Translation...
Outman hasn’t been eliminated (to a 100% certainty)…
After all, Anderson or Cahill could have an arm fall off before Opening Day.
Outman is out.
FoolshGame22 - March 26, 2009
