Open Thread: Spring Training Game 18 - A's at Angels

Greetings from Phoenix. It's been an interesting trip so far, starting from the security check at Oakland Airport, where I was "randomly selected" to be thoroughly inspected (translation: personally violated). After feeling me up repeatedly with explanations and apologies (to which I replied, "Really, don't apologize - this is the most action I've gotten all week"), the authorities proceeded to protect America by confiscating my "dangerously over 3oz" of toothpaste and shaving cream, thus foiling my master plan to storm the cockpit waving a bottle of Edge and shouting, "Take this plane to Cuba or the co-pilot loses his beard!"

Once on the ground following a near-fatal (warning: I might be exaggerating) bout of turbulence, my attention turned to baseball, where I had a chance to see Dallas Braden pitch and then had the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with Braden for an interview that I will post on AN in the next 2-3 days. Braden looked strong on the mound, using his cutter to claim the inside corner and in turn force hitters (and Jose Uribe) to lunge at changescrewupballs down and away. Is Braden throwing the screwball these days? Stay tuned...

Today the A's are in Tempe to take on the Angels, and last I knew Trevor Cahill was scheduled to pitch for Oakland. I'll be at the game, so there may be a game recap a bit later than usual, or...it may be pre-empted anyway by something even better...

Starting Lineups:

Oakland A's: 9 cool people

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: 9 not-cool people

Marty Lurie has scout Bernie Pleskoff on right now

he’s casting doubt on the Angels’ pitching, not only Santana (DL), but also Lackey (velocity down even since last year).

I tuned in to Right Off the Bat in the car

and through the buzz, snarkle, and hiss I faintly discerned Marty Lurie’s voice saying the first words I’d heard from him this season….
Give Bill Aboumrad a call.

Cool.

I generally prefer going into a season with younger untested pitchers. In all the commentary you always hear about how prospect so-and-so is young and untested and we really don’t know if he’s going to be any good or not. That’s absolutely true, but it’s also true with most veterans that although he has been good in the past we really don’t know if he can do it again this year. There’s a lot of uncertainty with pitchers, whether tested or not, but somehow you only hear about it with the new guys.

that's true -- you never know if veterans can repeat good performance

however, there’s something to be said for having a good track record in the majors, with a player who has gone past the ‘unknown so did well first time around", as well as the “adjusting to the adjustments” phases. As long as a pitcher hasn’t shown any warning signals regarding health and performance I would put him ahead of an untested pitcher.

Hello Daric Barton.

Are we seeing a return to his promising days.

Also, Nomar had a solid first day.
And Anderson continues to impress….I am liking his chances at getting into the rotation.

starting lineup for A's today

according to the SF Chron’s John Shea:

The lineup for the game in Tempe against the Angels: 3B Garciaparra, SS Cabrera, CF Sweeney, RF Cust, DH Ellis, C Suzuki, 1B Doolittle, LF Denorfia, 2B Petit, P Anderson.
Also says Ellis in a week and pessimism on Chavvy
(Ellis at 2b)
that's consistent with what they've been saying about Ellis
This is a great line up today
like it too

WHEW hit baby

Nomah!
did anyone else hear a late echo of Korach's Nomar call

during Cabrera’s at bat?

did anyone else just hear that

what seemed to be a recorded clip of Korach saying “Line Driv-” while he was talking?

that makes two of us at least
another sold out crowd!
Thats a nice park in Tempe
lets move there!
Ken

Quit saying Cabrera is “an ideal #2 hitter” every time he comes up. Christ.

He is the ideal #2 hitter!

Low OBP, Low SLG!

Isn’t that why they always used to bat Scott Podsednick leadoff?

Might I suggest e-mailing them to let them know what you think?
loving cabreras

plate discipline

I wonder how Angels fans will treat Cabrera?
he was pretty popular there

and was traded after three years, rather than signing elsewhere as a free agent….so I doubt he’ll inspire any particulr venom.

he did sign with the A's

but he also signed with the A’s because no one else wanted him.

Actually, come to think of it, why didn’t the Angels sign Cabrera? Its not like they have a good SS.

the Angels signed Cabrera in 2004

as a free agent. He played three full seasons with them before being traded to Chicago for a starting pitcher.

The Angels seemed to feel last year — and apparently, this year — that they have shortstop options from their organization. We might not agree, but that seems to be their position.

1-0 A's!

Hit. Hit. Hit.

Weaver looking shabby, He usually owns us if I remember correctly.

not as much as ervin santana owns us

yeah its almost mythic. :(

after all this is spring training
Cust caught looking...unheard of
So they said Bowen wasn't cut

when was the last time he was in a game?

he was reportedly on the waiver wire

(which is not public information, several scouts mentioned it to Slusser). However, he is still on the 40-man roster. He may have cleared the wire, or perhaps he was pulled back.

Buan mentioned yesterday that Bowen is nursing a thumb injury.

Bankston

Is Wes Bankston still on the team?

No

We* DFA’ed him last summer. In December he signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

Saint Mary's in or out?

With Miss St. winning the SEC it looks like they had their bubble burst, but I still think their deserving

So's what have I missed.

Top of the lineup production!

Anderson continues to pitch well
Angels don't let walls or screens get in their way
is GameDay right?

Three pitches, three outs?

The Angels?

no, i think they just put the pitch that gets put in play
probably so

otherwise Cust is the only hitter to see more than one pitch…

Petit!

surely cannot hit…

For not being able to hit he seems to be doing pretty good this spring
Right?

I hope he gets some play this year.

Petit hits

Garciaparra doubles

He's like CarGon

Except he hits doubles and singles

LOVE IT

on fire!

Test of the Emergency Broadcast System

or someone is using a Modem

That was me. Sorry.
Are we under attack or not?
We're the attackers, I think
Proceed directly to your fall-out shelters.
860 am is quite an adventure

emergency testing and commercials, while I thought the a’s were still at bat

yeah whats up?
Meanwhile, Cuba vs Japan under way

And Chapman already hitting 101 mph

I watched him pitch last week -- pretty awesome
and a good move to first
and he's driving Pestano nuts
It's weird seeing baseball games in big league parks right now
Who's your starting 5, with Duke on the DL

I got:
Eveland, Galleger, Braden, E. Gonzalez, Vinny

I don't know

I don’t think Cotroneo has a very good curveball. And his fastball tops out at 74.

E Gonzalez is not having a good spring

I really think one of Gonzalez or Cahill should be in. Possibly, both instead of Mazzaro. Anderson is clearly ready, Cahill may need the time to hone his control, but I think that if Anderson keeps it up this spring, there’s no way they can send him down…

I meant one of Anderson or Cahill
For sheer performance...

having nothing to do with arbitration, I’d go:

Eveland, Cahill, Braden, Anderson and either Mazzaro or Gallagher. I am not sold on Gallagher. Edgar and Gio— or at least one of them— seem destined for the pen.

Stranded at third-

music to the ears.

"the angels fail to score"
angels=FAIL

And that’s a good thing.

Does Cuba get to bring any fans for the game

They have a hard enough time getting the team to the US let alone the fans

Obama's

Authorizing travel to Cuba once per year for US citizens- not sure what the policy is for Cubans

On cahmpionships where I watched them

There weren’t any fans coming from Cuba

Yes

but they have to leave them in Miami to vote Republican for the rest of their lives

Did Sweeney get a hit?

ya... bloop off the end of the bat
Cust strikes out.. Again!

Hey it takes practice to K that much.

Can he get into the HOF for the most strikeouts in a season? or a lifetime?
Too bad the giants have to show a blowout on their spring TV date

But as expected when zito is on the mound

Zooooooooooks!
Zooks doubles!

Sweeney scores

Dooooooooooolittle!!
Chris Carter who?
The guy who created the X-Files?

What does he have to do with anything?

No they first basemen from single-A that gets all the hype
Doolittle!!
I like the looks of Doolittle. He could put a lot of pressure on Barton next year.
Barton has the pressure on him this year
I wouldn't mind seeing Barton on the trading block.. see if we can get a young 3B or SS
he'll need playing time to raise his value

which I think was hurt by his performance last season

denorfia= the macaroni masher
With Prego ?
if you please
if you please
doolittle/petit solid springs

meanwhile the prodigal sons penny/barton are injured or playing horrible

whos' penny?
Cliff Pennington.
zito is getting rocked
what's new?
so his workout sessions/ ww brian wilson havent helped?

i know crosby is no ones favorite but imagine at least 5 more yrs of zito…i bet zito/chavy laugh to the bank every couple weeks with their new paychecks

2009: $18.5 million, 2010: $18.5 million, 2011: $18.5 million, 2012: $19 million, 2013: $20 million, 2014: $18 million club option w/$7 million buyout (vests w/200 IP in 2013, 400 IP in 2012-13 or 600 IP in 2011-13) (voidable by player), 2015: Free Agent

I shall go out on a limb

And say that Zito wont be voiding the last year of his contract.

Now the Giants throwing Zito in the pen to make sure he doesn’t have 600IP from ’11 to ’13, that is entirely possible.

The way he's been pitching, no need to move him to the bullpen

With his efficiency, he would need about 200 starts to amass 600 IP

Yeah I'm sure they enjoy failing.
how bad did Vince just say Columbia
better than most actually.
4 strong innings from Anderson !!!!
pretty impressive

lots of grounders.

SPARTISCUST!!!
oops fail

typing goes south in my extreme joy

Cust and Ellis are the only ones in the starting 9 who haven't had a hit yet
As soon as I said that.. Cust homers.. go CUST!!!
Two for two!
I am going to start saying things like this in the first inning...
and ellis doubles
CUST

2 K’s, MEGABOMB.
in form already

Babe with a shot!!!!
Cust first pitch hitting

Like it!

Ellis single

or was it a Tripe? Double? Steal 3rd?

We're like menudo
The Mariners flashing some glove

Both Johjima and Ichiro getting the catching errors in the same AB

Baisley and Penny in for Cabrera and Nomar.

What a great show by the FA’s- excited for the season.

get used to these combos
This game rules

Its complete domination…

dont jinx it!

at this point, I dont really care if we lose

Our starters dominated

Always nice to stomp the Angels even if its ST.

lol

big country power Napoli

Heh

A’s killing it in a “sea of red”…

:)

It’s a great image.

Ken had a lot of trouble with that sentence

Cabrera, at 3B, went 0-3

heh

who do you guys think the next cuts will be?
Pennington anyone?

Doubt Pennington

Seems the team wants to get a good look at him to determine if he’d be worth putting on the 25-man roster.

Nice inning by Schroder

2Ks, 1-2-3

Better than his last outing
Hey, Barton did something good

woo-hoo! Good for him.

imo

i think that barton deserves a roster spot, hes hitting well in st (small sample size) and might be wasted in AAA

I think it will be hard to find a spot for him now that we have Nomar
Im not liking that Morales is hitting well this spring
Lets get us some JOE BIMEL!
a rob bowen talk

might be a little awkward… someone should call and ask what he thinks about being put on waivers

he and crosby have a lot to talk about
bowen to BoSox!!

just teach him how to catch the knuckle

the giants are down 10-1 at the royals

what’s the West Coast for Schadenfreud?

Nothing better than beating the Slegna!!!!
