What a year, huh?
My first season as a front-page writer is officially in the books, and it was an amazing- and often humbling- experience. No question, I had some very large shoes to fill. But I had two wonderful coaches in Nico and baseballgirl, for whom this has become old hat. I wish to personally thank them- and Tyler- for their patience and support this year.
On the eve of Athletic Nation's sixth birthday, I think it is safe to say that this has been the site's most trying season- and this says nothing of the team's performance on the field. I will spare you the gory details, but "meta-thread" was an all-too popular phrase around here for awhile. And just as we have become accustomed to seeing favorite ballplayers leave Oakland for greener pastures, AN lost a core group of people that had come up through the site's farm system.
But I am not here to talk about what Athletics Nation is not. Just like that little team over at 7000 Coliseum Way has done through the years, AN will rebuild and continue to reinvent itself. Maybe it's not the site you once knew and were fond of; well hell, neither are the A's, but we keep showing up. And if you feel the urge to wax nostalgic over Jennifer, do it. It's no different than getting teary-eyed over Marco. Look, I am the last guy to tell you not to talk about the past.
I don't mind looking ahead either, and I will echo Nico's sentiments about sticking around for the off-season. For many of you, this is the most wonderful time of the year, when rosterbation and speculation take over Athletics Nation.
There might be a retro piece or two from yours truly, including the conclusion of Scrapbook Memories, and the Decade in Review. If you are into that sort of thing.
And for the non-statsy, game-thread crowd, we will keep you entertained. Maybe Leopold Bloom and I will find the time to renew our DLD rivalry. (Or like Rickey working with Jemile Weeks, maybe monkeyball will come out of hiding and show us how it's done). Perhaps someone would like to take on the arduous task of bringing back the QOTM's. I know Nico has some other fun stuff planned, as do I, but why spoil the surprise?
So there will be plenty to see and do to get you through the winter. And remember, Spring Training tickets go on sale December 8...if you weren't sure what to get me for Christmas.
As for the new-look Athletics Nation, I'll leave the interior design comments for someone else. For me, it doesn't matter what the house looks like.
It's who lives there that counts.

You're awesome, 67M, I had no idea this was your first go of the first page stuff
It was good times for sure, and I think we’re all looking forward to a Yankee-less offseason here in our A’s cave. Bring on 2010!
cuppingmaster - November 5, 2009
+1
Thanks 67, I’ve always enjoyed your posts on AN and S&B.
Ovale Fan - November 5, 2009
Outlaw all Bobby Crosby post
Never again hear that name with the A’s. Here is the door and get out.
Arcman - November 5, 2009
But lots of posts referring to Ed Crosby
Nico - November 5, 2009
I know that I want to read more about how Holliday wasn't trying...
…and how Ethier used to be an Athletic !
GreenNGoldSooner - November 5, 2009
Does that mean...
I am not allowed to post at all??
BobbyCrosbysGirl - November 5, 2009
Not at all.
I n fact, your name will belong in the long echelon of A’s-related names. If EM doesn’t change hers, you shouldn’t have to change yours.
Leopold Bloom - November 6, 2009
haven't seen you around for a while...
are you sad that your boy will be heading to another team?
whiteshoes40 - November 6, 2009
Yes I am sad...
But seeing that I myself may be moving south this off season, I can’t get too mad!
I have been off working on my Masters Degree… haven’t had a whole lot of time recently to post. Now that my thesis is done, I hope to be around a lot more often.
BobbyCrosbysGirl - November 8, 2009
Woo hoo!
BobbyCrosbysGirl back, Crosby gone — what could be better???
Nico - November 8, 2009
awesome!
What did you get your master’s in? I just started working on my MA this fall, so my thesis still seems far away and scary. I try not to think about it too much… :)
whiteshoes40 - November 9, 2009
Mass Communication
I wrote my thesis on Women in Sports Journalism. I just turned it in on Thursday!
Trust me, it will be over before you realize. I feel like I was just applying for the program, praying I could find a way out of writing a thesis. 2.5 years and 70 pages later, I am done, and I can’t believe I made it!
You will be fine, and when it is over you will be so happy you did it! Where are you going and what are you getting it in? Good Luck!!
BobbyCrosbysGirl - November 10, 2009
Almost brought a tear to my eye this early in the morning, 67...
That’s a “rec”-worthy accomplishment…

Oh no, I prefer I this mikev

I mean, we all know he is a softie, but I like it better when he pretends.
He can’t read this, can he?
67MARQUEZ - November 5, 2009
no, no he can't.
For you see, his deepest secret is….HE CAN’T READ!
He’s been a functional illiterate for years, in such deep denial that he regularly posts here, several times a day. It’s such a shame.
Leopold Bloom - November 5, 2009
It's true.

he’s on KNBR this morning at 8.30.
I mean, not literally questions about softball. Yknow.

8:30, is that still Radnich?
If so, meh.

“Make out.”

Hey, that's what Crosby does.
67MARQUEZ - November 5, 2009
No, that's "outs"
It’s plural.

Is it too soon to start planning for fANFest and such?

Congrats on getting through your first year on the front page 67M!
gigglingone - November 5, 2009
Thank you
I really do want to say how much I appreciate the work that Nico, baseballgirl and Mr. 67 do to make AN such a great site.
I’ve had a lot of fun this season on the game threads and elsewhere on the site and as I’ve seen some other sites I’ve come to realize how well done AN is.
I hope we have a fun off-season as we make those trades for Pujols and Lincecum and I look forward to reading all the posts you smart, funny people come up with through the winter.

The big headlines are bold again.
Are people happy about that? I didn’t much care either way, but it seems some were quite fussed about it.

No, really,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
Leopold Bloom - November 5, 2009
It was a terribly trying season on the field...
….and it may have been a trying season on the blog from a frontpager’s perspective.
But from the perspective of this gamethread regular, AN was simply wonderful in 2009. The gamethreads were always fun. Given what was happening with the team they were remarkably constructive and unbitter.
Yes, there were absent old timers who were missed. But there were also some terrific newcomers.
In short, it was wonderful to have been able to share the season with all y’all! Thanks!
GreenNGoldSooner - November 5, 2009
And I'd say that 2008 was much harder as far as the A's go.
Leopold Bloom - November 5, 2009
Jennifer's not dead or anything, is she?
Englishmajor - November 5, 2009
She won't come to the door, I know this much.

cuppingmaster - November 7, 2009
In answer to the $67 Million Question...
How about updating the ANcillary Terms page for starters?
It occurs to me that only one of the A’s Nicknames players are still affiliated with the team (MaEl); not to mention a lot of other terms could use some updating/clarifying.
Some have already been done in various threads, but let’s definitively nickname the current roster shall we?
To optimize participation, what about a poll a day for each player and proposed nicknames?
(Anything to take my mind off the current Yankees orgy)
PortlandPachyderm - November 5, 2009
Super idea.
That part about a poll a day, are you willing to get it started?
Or should we wait to see who isn’t getting traded?
67MARQUEZ - November 5, 2009
Nico did a Fanpost during the season for updates.
Let’s locate that so we don’t duplicate.
ZigFan31 - November 5, 2009
Good call
Here’s the link
Perhaps we should let Nico add this to his “offseason fun and games goodie bag” since he originally brought it up.
PortlandPachyderm - November 5, 2009
Thing is, I've been in a holding pattern ever since,
waiting for DFA to do the “Metrics for Dummies” addition. He or anyone else is welcome to take that on anytime.
Nico - November 5, 2009
I offered to get with him and help translate from "mom's basement" to "beer swilling jock" language.
mikev - November 5, 2009
I think I actually have that dictionary.
Nico - November 5, 2009
see, but you're a geek, so I'm not sure I buy the beer-swilling jock persona.
Leopold Bloom - November 6, 2009
Do I need to send a resume or something?
Shit, I bring a full sized grill in the back of my truck to tailgates.
mikev - November 6, 2009
And to the drivers' seat of the truck.
Nico - November 6, 2009
hey-o
mikev - November 6, 2009

monkeyball - November 6, 2009
no, not a full size GIRL.
I think that’s illegal.
mikev - November 6, 2009
He has a real job now.
I think that removes him from contention.
iglew - November 5, 2009
The poll idea sounds fun, but
nicknames are never going to be “definitive”.
iglew - November 5, 2009
Better in spontaneity
DMOAS - November 5, 2009
Fair questions.
1) Sure, I could start one, but who’s going to see it? Does it need some sort of front page treatment? Or just a FanPost, etc.
2) If we waited for trades to shake out with this team, we may never get it updated. I say go for it with the current roster.
PortlandPachyderm - November 5, 2009
Fanpost would be fine.
I am certain you’ll get lots of responses.
About #2, you’re right. And so is ZF31 (see above).
67MARQUEZ - November 5, 2009
We could nickname the entire 40-man roster and call it
“40 A’s in 40 Days”
(heavily influenced by The Nails song “88 Lines About 44 Women”)
PortlandPachyderm - November 5, 2009

But I’ve never tried. If anything, I’ve done quite literally everything possible to avoid such a thing. I have, however, had severe dehydration and/or severe migraines that are somewhat similar to the hangover experience.
DMOAS - November 5, 2009

I’ve seen/heard people talk about how they had to wait a whole nine years for the Yankees to win another World Series. I’m sure Bronx second-graders can now be happy that they’ve seen their team win it all in their lifetime.

Let me get this straight....

GreenNGoldSooner - November 5, 2009

Leopold Bloom - November 5, 2009
it was a strange season
I could have done without the oh, last’s night’s starter was tragically killed in a car wreck thing, and certainly on the field it was sort of rubberneck-inspiring as well, like an accident that you can’t look away from.
The site, however, is the best it’s ever been, IMO, and not just cuz I got booted up to the front page (which is great & inspiring to me in its own right)… when I left here 3 years ago after 2006 in a (not Aubrey) huff I never imagined I would be back here and be one of the featured people. Not that all of you aren’t featured in your own way, this being one of the most thriving and vital online communities I’ve ever been a part of or witnessed, really.
Now we need a team to match the enthusiasm and the insight of the writers here, from the front page to the fanposts to the (admittedly legendary) gamethread comments…. now we need games that’ll ensure that those meta-threaded monstrosities will at least make passing mention of the game we call baseball & not just be about pie and delicious cakes. Not that there is anything wrong pie and delicious cakes, per se. I guess I’m saying we need a team that provides some numbers that don’t make the statistical-analysis fanposts of Paul Thomas and DFA seem like bad report cards you’re afraid to show your parents, you know?
Thanks to every single one of you for this season, it was kind of the most entertaining losing season ever and that was because of all of you guys… let’s do this again in March and maybe we won’t be 76 games out by the All-Star break this time, you listening Billy Beane & David Forst? Don’t make me start a “Banjo-Man-for-GM” campaign on your asses… this team and this fan base, if both are to move ahead & develop, need a lot more juice than what we had out there this year.
I want to be a proud of this franchise (itself one of the marquee teams in MLB and utterly unworthy of cellar-dwelling) as Yankee fans are this morning, without the arrogant & entitled sense of NY-ness, where it’s your dream and everyone else is just in it.
