Well, let's get you kids caught up on today's action.
The Rockies rolled past last year's World Series stud Cole Hamels and the champion Phillies 5-4, to square their series at a game apiece, while the Cardinals try to do the same down south. So far so good, as Matt Holliday has given the Redbirds a 1-0 lead with a solo shot off post-season noob Clayton Kershaw.

following the leader, the leader . . .

BERRYJO - October 8, 2009

AV - October 8, 2009
Oh, so, Billy Beane was just on KNBR
I’d have said something, but I was in the shower
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
do they archive their interviews?
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
Usually yes
check the website, it may not be up right away.
BleedGreen - October 8, 2009
I found it and tried to link....but it wouldn't link as a new page so I gave up.
Pet peeve of mine…I hate it when links don’t go in a new window!!

BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
no you weren't.
it was all jacked up today.
Gaijin_Suketto - October 8, 2009
No doubt Beane had to take some grief from slegnA fan Tolbert
KNBR sucks – they have fans of every team you can think of, except the A’s (and Raiders, but I’ve quit caring about them).
doctorK - October 8, 2009
They do have one guy that comes on sometimes at 7 PM who does talk about the A's.
FOrget his name – he fills in for the regular 7 PM guy.
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
Damon Bruce
He’s hilarious.
Rated-R Superstar - October 8, 2009
thanks...
i don’t hear him all that often but I have enjoyed it when I catch him.
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009

Damon Bruce is the regular guy, but the back up is Ray Woodson.
Rated-R Superstar - October 8, 2009
I think it's Woodsen that I like.

He’s a jackass.
Duane Kuiper was heard to exclaim something like “Damon Bruce can go fark himself” after a Gnats game a few weeks ago. I agree with him.

Duane Kuiper
He’s a homer and that’s why he hates Bruce.
Rated-R Superstar - October 8, 2009
You were thinking of Billy Beane in the shower?
baseballgirl - October 8, 2009
Don't we all?
oblique - October 8, 2009
But of course
I think of Billy Beane the whole day through.
Basically, to summarize the interview:
We’re rebuilding, we’re going to stay the course.
Anderson and Bailey = awesome.
Beane won’t go to Mets, likes Danville too much.
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
Danville is awesome.
Wait. They shut down the Danville Diablo Foods, didn’t they?
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
So if you have the MLB.com iPhone app
You can’t watch the game per se, but you can access multiple live video streams: CF, both dugouts, quad view, third base side etc. It’s kinda cool
cuppingmaster - October 8, 2009 via mobile

Nice win for the Rockies today
makes game 3 a huge game. I still think the Phillies are the better team but the Rockies are tough to beat in Denver so the advantage has to be with them.

these teams seem evenly matched.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
I was um, at the bar here,
having pizza with my friends and I was sitting fairly close to the HDTV on the wall.
Um, can I have one? That is awesome television. I thought it was all hype and BS. It’s really, really good.
Is anyone on this site a television expert?
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
defintely not an expert but it doesn't take much to LOVE HD
Since I got mine I can’t stand non-HD games they look so grainy
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
I was amazed at the clarity.
My current television is big, so I’m reluctant to switch, but…damn.
And while we’re at it, if you’re a football fan and you don’t have Direct TV, that red Zone thing is really cool on Sundays.
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
how does that work??
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
It's just a channel and they kind of go from game to game
whenever a team’s in the red zone. For the early games, it’s super chaotic and always back and forth…it’s kind of like having all the games on and having someone very skilled with the remote.
You’ve really got to be attuned to your short attention span theater side to appreciate it, though.
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
not sure I have it....but I'll definately take a look next time I'm watching FB
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
really? how come whenever i look at a HD TV it all looks like little blocks in motion (like say you’re watching a game, the camera is still and everything is fine, but when the camera moves a little, the green of the grass gets out of focus in square little chunks and they all dance around a little till the camera is still again and they settle down). and the smoothness in the color gradients isn’t there. like the sky, instead of going from deep blue to light blue evenly, it shifts in 3 or 4 banded steps. am i looking at a cheap TV or something?
AV - October 8, 2009
I can not say.....cable connection? no HD service?
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
HD… it might look better if they shoot it on film?
AV - October 8, 2009
I think it also depends on who supplies your HD -
If I’m not mistaken, different providers have different codings, etc, so there will be a higher pixel density and so forth
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
it's either the cable or the tv, dude.
This picture was amazing. and it was constantly good. It was the Dodgers game.
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
dude?
how’d you know i grew up by the beach?

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO!
pam5981 - October 8, 2009
i did watch the US open final with my diehard tennis fans, but i’m just a kneejerk delpo supporter for obvious reasons. soccer is what i’m really into. as luck would have it, i’ll be in the air right during the last world cup qualifier next week and i won’t know till i land if argentina got knocked out or if a miracle happend (maradonna getting hit by lightning and someone who knows how to coach taking over. i really hate him right now.).
AV - October 8, 2009
As someone whose 7 year old heart was broken in 1986 by Mr Maradona
I’m not having much sympathy there…
It’d be sad for the competition if Argentina didn’t qualify, mind
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
he broke my heart in 94. he’s breaking my heart right now. it’s the strangest thing, what’s going on right now. nothing makes sense. i can’t go into all the incongruities and contradictions, but it’s such an affront to logic, that i almost believe the italian mob is involved somehow. like he’s paying of a debt (he owes the italian gov a ton of tax money, he probably owes the other italian gov twice as much…) by messing up the team.
AV - October 8, 2009
I just don't think he's a very good manager, when it all comes down to it
Hasn’t he said he’s going to consider his position after this round of matches?
also, did you hear the one where the italian police took away his earings as a tax payment last time he went over there?
quite amusing.
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
i’m up on all the stories.
he’s a terrible manager. and why would be be any good at the top level when… he’s never done it before in his life?? that’s only the first weird thing.
some of the weird stuff is only weird because he’s losing like mad. if he were winning, i could very well see him acting like this.
like when he said he’s going to wait till after the qualifiers to consider continuing his position… he doesn’t merely say that, he also adds that if he decides to stay it will be under his conditions. please. he should be begging for them not to fire him.
when italy took his earrings… he was there because the president of argentine soccer called a meeting after the last bad loss, in which they were probably going to discuss if he was going to get fired or not. what did maradonna do? he took a last minute flight to italy hours before the meeting and checked himself into a weight loss spa for 10 days. really? that’s what you do when your job is on the line?
AV - October 8, 2009
you might know as soon as you land tho!
do you follow US as well?
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
not really individual US teams, but i’m kind of aware of what’s going on with the national team.
AV - October 8, 2009
They can lock spot with a win v Honduras this weekend maybe
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
USA has qualified, they're not going to be passed by both
Honduras and Costa Rica.
It’d be nice if they let Honduras win, I have some friends from there. It’s nice to see smaller teams get through, sometimes
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
No it wouldn't.
They need to win the games they are supposed to win.
mikev - October 8, 2009
AV - October 8, 2009
I think they'll get in - but I thought they needed
the win for it to be a sure thing. Maybe not.
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
They need to not lose against Costa Rica, essentially
On Wednesday.
And If Costa Rica don’t win in Trinidadand Tobago this weekend, then the US are through.
They’re not mathematically safe, yet, but they’re not far off
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
AWESOME.....have a great time!
All this hard work now is soooo worth a trip like that!

AV - October 8, 2009
You probably already know this but
make sure you are using an HDMI cord and your input setting on your TV is set to the correct HDMI. My TV still gets the HD channels if the input is set to TV but they don’t look as great.
Also, I agree that HD quality will depend on the provider and the TV.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
Oh definitely.
HDMI will improve the picture quality pretty dramatically. Be sure never to pay more than, say 5 or 10 bucks for a cable. They’ll try to sell you on a $50 cable that does absolutely nothing to the picture.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
but it's a special cable for the television to the cable box?
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
Special cable?
It should just be HDMI.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
Yes.
It kinda looks like a big USB cable, but it doesn’t cost $79 for a Monster Cable or whatever. You can get them on ebay for like 8 bucks.
mikev - October 8, 2009
That'd be HDMI, then.
They do look sort of like fatter USB connectors, except they’re more trapezoidal than rectangular.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
I know, I was explaining it to LB
mikev - October 8, 2009
Ah, got it.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
I just use the HMDI cord that Comcast gave me
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
And that works too.
Even better, it’s free (sort of)!
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
And, my manly men,
how should I go about getting a good HDTV?
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
it's florida.
Go steal an old person’s.
mikev - October 8, 2009
All I've got to do is knock on their door and tell them I'm with the television
reprogramming committee and I need to remove a part from it “back at the shop.”
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
That's the great thing about the new TVs
Even the ones that take up your entire wall weigh about 8 pounds. I can’t wait for next year when they bring out the folding one.
Englishmajor - October 8, 2009
The new LED models are around a half an inch thick.
Unreal.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
whoa
I just has a deja vu moment.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
LED's all the rage in the sign industry right now ,too.
That technology’s got a lot of push behind it right now, like a billion people REALLY want us to buy into it or something….
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
Best Buy
If you get the right sales-person they can be very helpful. Just remember
1080 p
at least 60 Hz (actually I’m not sure if they have less?) 120 Hz if you watch a ton of sports and action movies/TV shows
don’t buy the cheapo brands
there might be other important things but I don’t anything about them really.
The internet search on the best HDTVs to buy can be exhausting but helpful.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
okay, thanks, micdog!
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
NO NO NO NO
Best Buy sucks for TVs. Seriously.
Video Only is the place to go if you want a good deal. They price match to internet stores AND they carry the high end models, and price them the same as Best Buy does for the low end models.
mikev - October 8, 2009
alrighty then
my experience and price (again, holiday sale) at Best Buy in San Rafael was good but I could see other places being better.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
My example:
I bought the Samsung LN52A650 from Video Only for the same price Best Buy had the LN52A450.
mikev - October 8, 2009
Hey sweet.
I have the same model. The 650. It’s nice.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
hella.
it was my non-denominational wintertime holiday gift to myself.
mikev - October 8, 2009
but but but...
where’s video only in Florida?
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
I've never even heard of video only

BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
The refresh rate doesn't actually matter unless you're getting an LCD.
Plasmas are inherently way higher than that, anyway. And the lowest LCD refresh rate they’ll advertise is 120Hz. All TVs are at least 60 Hz.
Actually, I wouldn’t even consider the 120 Hz a requirement. TV and film signals are only at 30 fps (Hz). The TV uses a processor to digitally add frames to the signal, making it 120 or whatever.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
hhmm, LB, it sounds like like Dan here knows what he is talking about
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
I love baseball in HD
it is so awesome. I recently bought a Sony Bravia and it is great. You want something with 1080p and a high Hz rate (hertz, the refresh rate I believe). My TV is 60 Hz and sometimes you can see the baseball “drag” but it isn’t that bad. In Tennis the ball really drags across the screen but I don’t watch tennis that much. If you are willing to fork over more money you can get a TV with 120 Hz or even 240 Hz I think. Each step up is a couple hundred bucks though.
BTW, ESPN is the best looking HD channel. I hate their east coast bias but they look great.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
dibs
Future Ed - October 8, 2009
I hate the refresh rate boosting.
At least, in everything else except sports. It makes everything look like it was filmed with a cheap camcorder. But sports, admittedly, look pretty amazing with it on.
danmerqury - October 8, 2009
Somethings do look funny with the high rate
I watch Paul Blart: Mall Cop on DVD and it looked funny.
micdog2001 - October 8, 2009
That's just because it was a shitty movie.
mikev - October 8, 2009
yeah

there goes Holliday's contract with the cardinals
Future Ed - October 8, 2009
Walking the bases loaded - all the cool kids are doing it.

They keep letting the Dodgers load the bases!! that's like 4 or 5 times in the two games
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
OMFG HOLLIDAY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT PLAYING IN ST LOUIS
mikev - October 8, 2009

at least he started a blog to get out his side of the story.
Most players just yip privately.
One won lost won - October 8, 2009
really???
BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
Yeah, he had an MLBlog (is that what they call them? i think?) when he was in Oakland.
Actually, I have no idea if he kept it going when he got traded. Never checked.

yeah he did
I only checked it once..

I’m sorry, it’s irrational. I just don’t like the guy.
Nico - October 8, 2009
I don't think trading for him was a good idea
because it didn’t work for the A’s with Johnny Damon, and a few others. But just because a guy came to the A’s and had a subpar year…. nuttin’ personal

Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009
It's great that the Dodgers have Vin Scully doing the radio broadcast
Usually his only radio work is a TV/radio simulcast for the first three innings of the game. He’s doing radio on innings 1-3 and 7-9 in the postseason games. From the “I hope Holliday is wearing a cup!” moment to the end, his call was awesome. How did Dick Stockton do?
Soaker - October 8, 2009
On the plus side, he didn't mention a "grand slam homerun"
Nico - October 8, 2009
and another thing, Cards, Lincecum deserves the Cy Young
suck on that, too
stormtown - October 8, 2009
Carpenter
I think he should win it.

BERRYJO - October 8, 2009
it's good we have such unity on this topic
stormtown - October 8, 2009
I like to think that the lack of fielding practice in Oakland did it
For all of my complaining, it was NEVER Holliday’s batting numbers that I objected to. It was the 6 or 7 times I saw him jogging after balls, and tossing them back in. He played a series in San Francisco that he allowed three singles into doubles in the same game. Just half-assed his way around.
baseballgirl - October 8, 2009
Exactly.....justice is served......have fun trying to win 3 in a row now Red Birds!
mrod - October 8, 2009
Sigh.
Yes. Matt Holliday didn’t try. Totally.
He’s not on the team anymore. Can it just fucking quit already? It’s such a ridiculous complaint to make. I mean honestly, DO YOU REALLY THINK THINK HE DIDN’T TRY????
mikev - October 8, 2009

I really believe that Matt Holliday did not give 100% to the A’s. I really, really believe that.
baseballgirl - October 8, 2009
Which is not the same as he didn't try.
I believe he tried. I also believe he didn’t give 100%, and certainly not in the field. The way he ran after balls in the outfield in St. Louis was at a whole different speed. I watched the guy jog after balls as if it was BP in Oakland. It’s not completely irrational.

What’s the spread?
And i think you’re right—I think it’ll be a fairly close contest.
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009

I’m going to go with No. 14 Penn State over unranked Eastern Illinois.
Also, the spread for the Florida-LSU game was 7.5 points the last time I checked.
Rated-R Superstar - October 8, 2009

UF might cover that, young man.
depends if Tebow plays, I recon.
Leopold Bloom - October 8, 2009

Rated-R Superstar - October 8, 2009

I’ve never actually seen him in anything other than the terrible ads, so I wasn’t sure. I’m evidently not the target market for the phone because I didn’t know who the celebrities were, other than Chevy Chase. (The one other guy looked like the former news director of the public radio station in Phoenix, but I realize that wouldn’t sell a lot of phones.)

Raburn with Detroit, in the playoff loss to the Twins (10th Inning).
Mets 2nd baseman, dropping a sure out and the Yankees win…
Even DFA Brown, when he lost the final out in the lights in the 9th inning.
No schadenfreude for me on those.

There is entirely too much Holliday hate, by the way. I think that even if he tried 300% and smiled every minute of every day… the A’s would probably still miss the playoffs. I’m happy Holliday gets another chance to play for a winning team.
JLaff - October 8, 2009
it's more fun when he's a goat
cuppingmaster - October 8, 2009
It's more schadenfreude than hate.
To each his/her own.
pam5981 - October 8, 2009
300% huh?
I don’t hate Holliday myself to be honest I’ve already forgotten about the guy. He wasn’t here long and he did nothing memorable.
sirbed - October 8, 2009
I think, now, there is another layer
whereby it is now funny to say ‘Holliday isn’t trying’, because it’s clearly something that’s impossible to say for certain. So, it’s kinda a knowing mocking?
I don’t think anyone is really celebrating failure.
Though, the error was a rather amusing one
bobnothing - October 8, 2009
I tell y'all whut...
we had really high expectations for Holliday, like at least a 1.000 OPS and 20 dingers by the break, and a lot of love for the guys who were given up for him.
He didn’t embarass himself at all. He played just fine, but he needed to play like a god on earth to impress the prejudiced mother-in-law that is the A’s fanbase.
I’m still bitter that I had to mourn the death of the playoff hopes of my favorite club in MAY…. in fu**ing May! That’s just depressing. And I’m gonna irrationally blame it on him and root against him for the rest of his career.
Gaijin_Suketto - October 8, 2009
Why not blame it on the people who actually fucking sucked
and were thusly responsible for the playoff hopes being dashed?
Like Giambi, Cabrera, Cust, etc
mikev - October 8, 2009
because it's called irrational blame for a reason. sheesh.
pam5981 - October 8, 2009
You know who I blame for this failure?
Dan Giese.
JLaff - October 8, 2009
I blame Ron Hassey
sirbed - October 8, 2009
No one notes
that Rajai Davis tried SO hard, he made his teammates look bad. Geez, what a cancer!
JLaff - October 8, 2009
I completely concur
JLaff - October 8, 2009
Because that would be rational.
And this, for me, is an emotional thing.
Giambi and Cust make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I’ve always liked Cabrera from a distance, too.
Gaijin_Suketto - October 8, 2009
ortiz is such a whiner
Future Ed - October 8, 2009
Fark both these teams
My fervent wish is that whichever team advances loses two or three key players to devastating injuries so they won’t be able to help in the next round.
Also, I’d like to find out that Rev Halofan gets busted for DUI after tonight’s game.

The red undershirts with the gray road unis and blue lettering is a really bad look.
