Colorado Rockies vs. Philadelphia Phillies (completed)
Cliff Lee helped get the playoffs off to a boring start (unless you like one-sided pitching gems for the favorites), as he tossed a complete game six-hitter, allowing just one run in the ninth. He also singled and stole a base. No, I'm not kidding. Jimenez had a rocky fifth and sixth (get it? get it?) and was charged with all five runs. The Rockies never had a chance in this one, and they need to pick up the bats against Hamels tomorrow (they will start Cook). Yeah, they're kind of in trouble.
Game 2 tomorrow, same 11:37AM start time
Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees - (in progress)
Our very own traitor Nick Swisher has just put the Yankees ahead, after Mr. Clutch tied the game at 2. Yankees ahead 3-2, the game is going to the fifth inning.
And in the nightcap:
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers - 9:37 PM ET - 6:37 PM PT
Cy Young candidate Chris Carpenter will be pitching against newcomer-to-the-playoffs Randy Wolf, who had a solid season for the Dodgers with very little run support. The Dodgers faltered down the stretch, but because of their hot start, they still managed to hang onto the top spot in the National League.

There have been so many players that have come through the A's organization
we should be able to take some credit for a portion of any post season win!
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
The A's like the official AAAA supplier of the major leagues.
ElQuesoCapitan - October 7, 2009
so true......
Oakland A’s – supplier to the WORLD of baseball
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
I think that's overstating it slightly.
OldhamA - October 7, 2009
It was a joke....of the hyperbolic kind...
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
kind of like calling an event between the national league and the american league the “world” series….

Kinda....without the rest of the world being involved.....yeah!

or like when spain thinks it’s so important and big and manifestly destined that it forgets it has neighbors who share the continent with them and so spaniards go around spain calling it europe but they don’t include portugal or france or even albania in that europe? oh wait, spain doesn’t do that!

OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
Cal
As far as they go, I’ll feel a little better if they beat UCLA on the 17th. That would make us 4-2 and then we have Washington State. That’s an easy one. After that, we have Arizona State on the road. That’s our weakest road opponent.
Rated-R Superstar - October 7, 2009

Victory
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
That was a few years ago, right?
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
Nah, probably a decade ago.
Maybe a little less than that. The deal breaker was that Oakland wanted a then-minor league Kevin Youkilis. Boston said no.
danmerqury - October 7, 2009
it was 2002, I think.
And if I remember correctly, the deal was pretty much set — the A’s would’ve got Youkilis, and DePodesta would’ve taken over as GM — but then Billy backed out. Decided he preferred the challenges of the A’s limited payroll and everything. Right?
whiteshoes40 - October 7, 2009
Was it?
I probably misremembered. It was at least 2002 or earlier, though, because it made it into Moneyball.
danmerqury - October 7, 2009
Yeah, I remember it being in Moneyball.
Also, I paid absolutely no attention to baseball prior to 2002, and I quite clearly remember being upset that Billy was leaving, so I’m pretty sure it was ’02. Oh, that Billy, what a joker… making us all think he was leaving… but no!
whiteshoes40 - October 7, 2009
Billy can never leave.
Forst too. There were rumors that Forst interviewed for the SD gig, but the A’s shot them down. I’m glad.

cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
What channel is the next game on?
Aren’t they all on TBS?
I have the TV off as I don’t want to waste electricity watching a Yankees procession
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
TNT for now
But I think it will switch back to TBS as soon as they’re finishing the gloating
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
Oh nice, I shall switch it over, then. Eat my ratings, Yankees!
Or words to that effect
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
So
I guess posada knows why he isn’t starting at catcher tomorrow now.
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
Why? I don't know
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
cuz of the passed balls early
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
Oh, I missed those. I don't like Posada, either, the BlueJay coldcocking prick
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
is tnt in hd?
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
yes, i have it here
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
Siddown Holliday!!
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
matt holliday, still with that faraway look in his eyes, spitting out sunflower seeds
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
does. not. care.
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
Thinking of what might have been in Oakland
(Hawaii)
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
damnit belliard!
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
i hope we're not 0-3 today
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
i know, it is disheartening so far
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
it'd be OK if there were good games
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
I'm rooting for the Cardinals on this one
I have decided that it’s the least unpleasant WS winning option
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
are we rooting for the Dodgers or Cardinals?
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
dodgers
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
if it weren't for Holliday, I'd have no qualms w/ rooting for the Cards
as it is now, I’m torn
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
join us
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
Well, let's not forget the Rafa Furcal Signing Circus last winter...
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
that turned out well for the A's
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
I'm kind of leaning towards the Cards
but that’s just b/c I think La Russa is a great manager – but then so is Joe Torre when I think about it. I just remember the Dodgers as A’s killers in ’88 (but that was a long time ago).
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
come on man you're in LA
Dodgers! If they get in the WS, are you gonna go?
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
Cardinals
I picked them to win the National League.
Rated-R Superstar - October 7, 2009
care to wager on that?
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
Gambling
Hey, I am not of legal age for that activity.
Rated-R Superstar - October 7, 2009
i guess that's true, when do you turn 18?
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
18
I turn 18 in December.
Rated-R Superstar - October 7, 2009
no gambling, but you can get married in a red state
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
Red States
You can get married when you’re 18 in all red states?
Rated-R Superstar - October 7, 2009
i don't know about all
but on the whole, it seems like they have younger consent ages
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
you are not legal age for most activities
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
it doesn't have to be for money, you know
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
I got your wager!
BleedGreen - October 7, 2009
Whoever can beat the Yankees...
Oh wait – wrong series -
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
where did summer go? it is cold and almost dark out already
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
Summer
That ended when autumn began sometime in September.
Rated-R Superstar - October 7, 2009
I know... It's warm outside during the daytime, but once it gets past four, it gets cold in a hurry
As I found out to my detriment riding home without a sweater this afternoon
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
i may have to turn on the heat
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
My appartment faces South, so it's still pretty warm in here
we’re not quite at the heat-on time of year at Nothing Towers yet
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
my house has little insulation
i’m a wimp
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009

BleedGreen - October 7, 2009
that's going to suck when we turn back the clocks
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009

Future Ed - October 7, 2009

OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
I play that game too!! I went to the one at a time plan and mostly watch online stuff!
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009

baseballgirl - October 7, 2009 via mobile
WOW - this guy is getting lit UP
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
carpenter?
he’s could win the Cy Young. he was already named comeback player of the year.
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
I have not followed the cards at all - so I don't know these things.
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
What's his story?
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
TJ had him out last year
not Tijuana
BleedGreen - October 7, 2009
Ah......like many a good pitcher now rehabbing for the year
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
Actually sorry I lied.
Just a series of injuries have kept him out basically all of ‘07-’08.
BleedGreen - October 7, 2009
Well - I woulda never known the diff.
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
was good, started with the blue jays in the late 90s
then had serious arm injuries the last two years. now back this year.
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
the Comeback Player of the Year award is odd.
I’m still slightly bitter about a few years back, when Ellis had a great year after missing the previous season (because a certain shortstop ran into him in spring training), but then Giambi won the award after coming back from… sucking the year before. Not a serious injury. Just being awful. Woo, congrats G, you didn’t suck this year like last year!
…
sorry. I think Ellis just needs to win something so I can get over all these bitternesses I’ve been harboring.
whiteshoes40 - October 7, 2009
yeah i think it should go to the injured only too
but I don’t think there are rules. Did Thomas win it while he was here?
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
hmm. I don't remember.
[wiki] Looks like he was 2nd to Thome.
whiteshoes40 - October 7, 2009
lame
Thome was the same deal — he just sucked. Thomas’ career was basically over before he came to Oakland.
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
I totally agree with you. He was very deserving of that award in that year.
Let’s not get into this – b/c it inevitably leads to those east coast bias conversations which just irritate me no end!!! Ellis is one of my favorite players on the team. He should have won a GG, too IMHO.
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
are the dodgers hitters this good? or is this pitcher just bad right now?
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
I think it's part of the city wide LA steroids policy
see also, the LAAAAAAAAAAA
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
oh hai everyone.
1. I haven’t been on AN in far too long.
2. Unsurprisingly, istillhatemattholliday.
3. Go Dodgers!
pam5981 - October 7, 2009
PAM!!!! So good to see you!
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
You woulda loved mikev's shirt at the tailgate.....
he “fixed” his holliday shirt. It was pretty good.
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
so that whole makemenothateyoumattholliday thing never quite worked, huh?
whiteshoes40 - October 7, 2009
I think I hate him more now.
pam5981 - October 7, 2009
I liked him when he was on the A's... not so much anymore.
I don’t hate him, and I don’t NOT like him, but I don’t actually LIKE him. We have a complicated relationship.
whiteshoes40 - October 7, 2009
You're just not that into him.
pam5981 - October 7, 2009
did he tell you you were made of poop?
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
Oh great, my roommate's boyfriend is over
crashing around and talking in his loud voice
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
tell him shush - you're watching a very important game!
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
Actually, I don't have the tv on. I'm in my room, sorta doing some work
(mostly posting here) with the radio on
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
JK, then!
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
I might just tell him to shush, anyway
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
roommates suck
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
they do?
man, you need to hook me up with some of your old roommates…
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
lol
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
I quite like my room mate, and I don't even dislike her boyfriend
I’m just in kind of a ‘bit of peace and quiet, thanks’ type of mood, really
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
i guess i've always preferred to live alone
glad when college roomie phase was over
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
i only had a roommate for my freshman year
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
Oh, if I could afford to live alone?
Absolutely, I would.
This plenty is plenty spacious, though, and our bedrooms are at opposite ends, so it’s mostly no bother
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
huh
I had multiple roommates all throughout college, then lived w/ my girlfriend for almost 4 years.
Moving down to LA, I have a roommate again, but I don’t see her too much. I don’t think I’d be comfortable living alone.
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
i remember being 4 years old and wanting my own place
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
so did you get a treehouse?
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
sadly no
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009
your parents prolly felt the same way
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
i'm sure they did with all those children
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009

Future Ed - October 7, 2009

cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
dinner time, maybe i'll grill up the rest of the turkey burgers
anyone having anything good?
OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009

OakA'sHoney - October 7, 2009

ZigFan31 - October 7, 2009
Ah, damn.
I was hoping for a crazy 9th-inning Twins comeback that I missed. Oh well.
danmerqury - October 7, 2009
good thing you didn't hold your breath
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
They gave us a two out mini tease
but that was it, really
bobnothing - October 7, 2009
Apart from the Light towers
And the acres of parking spaces, you would never know Dodger Stadium exists.
Hit4TheCycle - October 7, 2009
and the displaced poor people
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
the saga of Chavez Ravine really makes me mad
it’s why I can never truly root for the Dodgers.
Even so, it wasn’t them that kicked out those poor Latinos. It was the city of LA when they had redevelopment plans for new modern public housing. Of course, that was in the 50s and all the development community had to do was fund a challenger for Mayor that claimed the incumbent was a communist for supporting public housing. Incumbent loses, public housing shut down, but now we have this huge plot of land we kicked poor people out of and nothing to do with it.
I know! Call the Dodgers!
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
You read the dodger move west in some class too?
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
Wasn't Ry Cooder the guy behind the Buena Vista Social Club documentary?
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
That's all you had to do in the 50s. Accuse someone of being a communist......
I’ll stop here for fear of getting all political in here.
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
Councilmember Hahn (who's son went on to be mayor before Villaraigosa)
actually put modern artists and their pieces of art on trial before the LA city council, trying to prove that they had “communistic influences”. Pure show trial. It proved nothing and drove all respectable art in LA out to Venice where everyone was poor so they didn’t care what you were doing.
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
So many people had their lives ruined under the same threat
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
Oh, absolutely.
It’s a section of our history that’s been swept under the rug, which is more than unfortunate. Things are starting to come out, thankfully.
danmerqury - October 7, 2009
A real rough story
Political, but with its share of drama is the history behind Los Angeles water rights.
I am all for a fair trade, the Raiders for the Northern California waters.

cityplANner - October 7, 2009
Chinatown - the movie - a great one on this subject
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009

But the 30’s are prettier
cityplANner - October 7, 2009

Future Ed - October 7, 2009
The coolest thing about the whole Owens Valley saga
is that Once Mullholland opened the waterworks, he had a big news conference at one of the main reservoirs on the outskirts of the San Fernando Valley. Thousands of people showed up to look at so much fresh water in on place. When he got to the microphone, all he did was point at the water and say “There it is! Now take it!”
For all my contempt of what he did, that’s pretty bad ass.
cityplANner - October 7, 2009
a further discussion may not be so helpful, yes?
Future Ed - October 7, 2009
D'YA think Furcal wouldn't play with us b/c he knew we weren't probably gonna be in the post season??
BERRYJO - October 7, 2009
i think he was using us as a bargaining chip
to drum up interest so it looked like he might actually sign with us, so the dodgers would agree to his contact terms
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
I stopped feeling bad for us after seeing what he did to the Braves.
Wren actually had a signed offer sheet sent to his agent. The thing was in the bag.
danmerqury - October 7, 2009
serious
that was the craziest “negotiation” i have ever heard of in the offseason
cuppingmaster - October 7, 2009
that's a good place for a single
not with the bases loaded, he must think he’s in Oakland (psst, matt, it is california, but not oakland
