So far in this playoffs (tonight was start #4), Cliff Lee has been incredible. Tonight was no exception, as he did nothing more than toss a complete game, not allowing an earned run. Lee went the distance, allowing 6 hits, zero walks, while striking out ten. It was that kind of a night.
Chase Utley gave the Phillies a lead they would never relinquish, hitting not one, but two solo homeruns; one in the third and one in the sixth. CC Sabathia was effective, but not especially sharp, and was definitely outpitched by Lee. He lasted through the seventh, and his bullpen replacements were awful. A combination of Hughes, Marte, Robertson, Bruney, and Coke gave up two more to the Phillies in the eighth, and two more in the ninth.
Taking a 6-run lead into the ninth, Lee allowed leadoff singles to Jeter and Damon, but induced a ground ball from Teixeira. Utley made a nice play to get the one out at second, but Rollins threw the ball into the dugout, allowing the Yankees to score a token run. Lee then struck out A-Rod for the third time on the night (cooling off the .438 postseason average, 5 HR, 12 RBI) and Posada to end the game.
Phillies lead the series 1-0.

Arod is not a true yankee anymore

He sucks
We should sign him for cheap
baseballgirl - October 28, 2009
I'd even consider trading Chavez for him
mikev - October 28, 2009
Yeah, maybe
I’ll have to think about that
baseballgirl - October 28, 2009

Trusty old October slump just in time!

Aura and Mystique must have taken the winter off.

For a not-so-compelling WS, this was a good result
Enough of the Yankee nostalgia pile.

Fond Memories of 2001
America was in shock and pain, but baseball gave us the chance to bask in the Schadenfreudey glow of the Yankees’ WS defeat.

Lee didn't even break a sweat
I’m enjoying listening to Tony Bruno postgame
I enjoyed every minute of this game.

yeah that was fun
I loved Lee’s nonchalant mound attitude. None of it seemed like much of a deal to him… I half expected him to yawn when A-Rod came up.

highlight of the day
I was away all day and missed the whole game, but someone in the street saw my A’s jacket and told me the Yankees had lost, so I knew about the result.
In the BART station on the way home this kid walked by me in a Yankee hat and I sort of smirked at him…. as we passed each other he says “Are you smiling at me because I lost?” and I got to walk away with my back to him and say really loud “YES!!!!”
He walked away all frowny, awwwwwwwz.

I don't understand why the Phillie;'s manager sent Cliff Lee out in the 9th
6 run lead, why not give your starter a bit less of a workout, save his arm for the next game?
MobiusKlein - October 29, 2009
Because he anticipates
leaning on the pen very hard over the next few days?
alox - October 29, 2009
probably
OaklandSi - October 29, 2009
good answer
but a six run lead? Not even some inning eater he’d never use in a close game?
