A double dose of playoffs comes your way, beginning with Game Three of the American League Championship Series. The Yankees hold a 2-0 lead over the Angels, who have miscued their way into a hole.
Andy Pettitte goes for NY, while Jered Weaver grabs the ball for Los Angeles.
Still over an hour until game time, but I am certain you can find something to talk about until then.

This is one day
(as in ONE, out of 200+ so far) when my horrible work schedule is an advantage. I’m back home in front of the TV, having already finished my lunch….
Englishmajor - October 19, 2009
Nice!
brian.only - October 19, 2009
It works great until the exhaustion sets in
And then I suddenly find myself having to take an afternoon n
Englishmajor - October 19, 2009
LOL.
So Mrs. MikeV called just now.
“Hey, just letting you know, I talked to {name removed} and she has H1N1 and since they were over on Saturday we were exposed.”
Um, OK. I’ll drink more fluids and hope I don’t have flu symptoms.
“Okay, I just wanted to let you know. She was worried that we’d be upset.”
Why? It’s the flu. All she has to do is hydrate and rest and she’ll be fine. It’s no different than any other strain of the flu.
mikev - October 19, 2009
Can i get it by replying to you?
Future Ed - October 19, 2009
Ooh, you're totally screwed now.
mikev - October 19, 2009
I had it months ago.
I’m one of the rare cases that didn’t die.
Leopold Bloom - October 19, 2009
How do you know?
Nico - October 19, 2009
Well, if I were in fact dead and walking the earth unaware in an undead state....
that would explain a lot, actually.
Leopold Bloom - October 19, 2009
Yeah, seems consistent with your posts
You should check with your doctor.
Nico - October 19, 2009
Hmmm, no pulse, body temperature of about 78 degrees,
pink sticky swelling around the eyes…I’m afraid you’ve got pink eye. Here, I’ll get you some topical cream.

Hi Dr. NICK!

About time, maybe Figgins and Vlad have woke up.
brian.only - October 19, 2009
except for the double in game one fro vlad
and the double in game 2 for figgins
Future Ed - October 19, 2009
True, but 2 hits from your 1st and 4th is pretty meager.
Feels like their offense just folded in on itself considering 2/3rd’s of their players hovered around .300 all year.
brian.only - October 19, 2009
DP's in this case
are good as far as I’m concerned.
Ideally the Yanks sweep this and sit for 5,000 days and are rusty facing the NL.
Hate rooting for Yankees but someone has to win and I cannot stomach the slegnA winning.
Trainman - October 19, 2009
After all that and he gets the base!
This game is going to last till supper at this pace.
Oh Figgins…
brian.only - October 19, 2009
Yeah, with the score you'd think it started at 2

joe buck, deliciously stupid as usual
talking about how important it is for the Angels to score first…..only the Yankees are 3-0 this postseason when the other team scores first.
PL78 - October 19, 2009
Joe Buck stupid?
This is a man who worked his way up with no help from anyone to become the greatest broadcaster ever.
I mean someone else would have to have had his Dad be a legendary broadcaster to get as high as Joe has so quickly.
Great men like Joe Buck and Chip Caray have done it the old fashioned way and have earned all their success.

I have a good friend who is a diehard SlegnA and Notre Dame fan.
He did not call me on Saturday. I wonder why.
When the slegnA wins, he calls up and gloats. That is 50 percent of the hatred for me towards the slegnA right there.
Trainman - October 19, 2009
Heh.
You should have called him up. Without bringing any baseball up or anything, just say you “want to talk”.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
Oh holy crap...that almost went out!
baseballgirl - October 19, 2009
Um...if I was an Angels' fan
I’d WANT WEAVER TO LEAVE THE GAME NOW

I agree though. He is not very good in the day by the looks of it.

OakA'sHoney - October 19, 2009

elcroata - October 19, 2009

brian.only - October 19, 2009
seriously
how many times will they repeat their breakthrough discovery that flying object decelerate due to friction?
elcroata - October 19, 2009
I'm not watching on TV.
Are they still trumpeting that dual speed thing, which is ultimately meaningless?
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
that new fangled thing that McCarver never heard of
that has been on MLB.com for 2 years?
Future Ed - October 19, 2009
Honestly, if I'm playing with some numbers that Tim McCarver has heard of
I’m behind the curve. By about ten years.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
So to clarify one more time
when the ball leaves the hand it is 88 mph, but when it reaches the batter it is only 82mph. So when you hear 90mph, it is important to know where – is it when leaving the hand, half way? We have conducted a survey of hundred MLB players asking them is Moyer’s fastball 55mph when it leaves the hand or when (if) it reaches the plate?
elcroata - October 19, 2009
It seems like most "regular" radar gun readings correspond to the Pitchf/x "start_speed" number.
Which is when it’s leaving the hand.
As for Moyer, hell, the thing probably slows down to the residential speed limit.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
You are right, it does
I was just repeating basically the same sentence I’ve heard for the umpth time now :)
elcroata - October 19, 2009
Yikes.
I knew there was a reason I’m not watching the game on TV.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
Yeesh, four solo homers?
And no errors? I’m surprised.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
That could qualify
baseballgirl - October 19, 2009
But....."The Yankees cannot rely on the Home Run"
anyone else wanna puke when they hear this retardation? Its amongst the dumbest thing said by pro-small ball idiots.
Home Runs are the ONLY thing you CAN rely on that will definitely score you a run.
PL78 - October 19, 2009
Bingo.
A lineup of 9 Adam Dunns will, in fact, rely on the home run. Reliably.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
and theyd hit an insanely absurd 360+ Home Runs
THREE HUNDRED AND FUCKING SIXTY HOME RUNS.
but yeah, that wont win them many games because Dunn strikes out too much. kill me now…
PL78 - October 19, 2009
Even worse
He walks a lot and clogs the bases.
elcroata - October 19, 2009
www.lineupsimulator.com
Fun site.
A lineup of nine 2009 Adam Dunn’s would score 6.72 runs/game, and 1089 over the season. 1089!
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
A lineup of 9 Adam Dunns might struggle in the NL
sirbed - October 19, 2009
I find it hilarious that he was 35.5 runs above average with the bat this year.
But 36.4 runs below average with the glove. Net contribution? 1.1 WAR.
Besides, one of those Adam Dunns would have to pitch. I’d pay to see that.
danmerqury - October 19, 2009
I don't know what any of that means
but Dunn pitching would be fun to watch.
sirbed - October 19, 2009
even in AL
A lineup of 9 Dunns might score 1084 runs in a season, but it would probably have 200 more scored against…
elcroata - October 19, 2009
this is proof
fielding metrics still are a long way from having a solid, accurate foundation. I refuse to believe a LF/1B gave up 36.4 runs over a year solely by defense.
PL78 - October 19, 2009
So, if this game keeps going this way
Tomorrow the Angels will place all their hopes on a starter who was outpitched in the finals of an international tournament by his own first baseman. Good luck.
elcroata - October 19, 2009
If the game keeps going at this pace
it will still be going when they start game 4

I understand this move, but I'd be hesitant to pull Oliver here
He’s been by far the Angels’ most consistent and reliable reliever, and after A-Rod you have a lefty in Matsui anyway. My inclination would have been to leave Oliver in. Obviously Scioscia knows his bullpen better than I do, but that’s my two cents.

baseballnut020 - October 19, 2009
hi friends
Just got the game on, wow…. Scioscia put Kendrick in, wondered if he was waiting for the offseason to play that guy.
Is there some sort of bad Sleggie baserunning? Jon and Joe are discussing their incompetence, what did Teixeira make some great play?
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
No, Abreu made a ridiculously HORRIBLE decision on the bases
baseballgirl - October 19, 2009
Over-ran a double to Santa Barbara
And was of course easily nailed for it. Leadoff 8th inning double, adios.
paradox - October 19, 2009
Teixeira, regardless of what UZR or PT believe,
is a damn good 1Bman, GG quality IMO. That has shown up in this series time and time again.
The thing about the Yankees is that they do make fundamental plays well. Not every team does. And they deserve credit for that. But not in the “ZOMG whadda grate play by JEETER!!!!1111” way, just in the “that’s how you’re supposed to do it” way.
Nico - October 19, 2009
yep...and yep
67MARQUEZ - October 19, 2009
Teixiera
is stunning on both sides of the ball & he has saved at leat 4 runs in this series from innings that didn’t develop for the Halos because he stretched and sved Jeter or Cano on wide throws to 1st.
I cannot imagine what it’s like to have a player as good as he is on my team, he is just a monster and has been since he slaughtered us routinely with the Rangers.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
Just for the record,
the most recent comment that I’ve made with respect to Mark Teixeira’s fielding was referring to him as a positive type of outcome for Sean Doolittle.
And that was in December 2008.
I should add that it doesn’t account for receiving, either, so the kinds of plays Tex has been making in the postseason just aren’t part of the metric (yet).
PaulThomas - October 19, 2009
Yeah, I just think (from something you said earlier) that UZR doesn't love him
and I don’t get that. He’s just good. His range may not be super-spectacular but he’s a very, very, very good 1Bman overall in every aspect of the position.
Nico - October 19, 2009
It wasn’t from something I said earlier, that’s for sure.

bobnothing - October 19, 2009
What a weird play
First off, I couldn’t believe how far into left field Cabrera was. Someone should have gotten to that ball— if the CF is over that far, you kind of have to shift the RF too… and then the Yankees actually got bailed out by the terrible angle Cabrera took on the ball, because if he plays it correctly the play is just a clean double.
Total brain fart by Abreu, of course. He couldn’t get to third— maybe he could have five years ago, but…
PaulThomas - October 19, 2009
To give some credit to Cabrera
He did play the bounce very well

brian.only - October 19, 2009

Nico - October 19, 2009
I give half the blame-of-the-game for that pitch
to Johnny Mathis for calling for it 0-2 like that.
Sciosia, according to many at Halos Heaven, is to Mathis as Chavez is to Beane in terms of identifying-with-a-player-to-the-point-where-you-can’t-see-how-he-hurts-the-team.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
if I may veer slightly offtopic here
is there a stat to show how many times a player scores a run when singled home from 1st or 2nd or the amount of times the player advanced from 1st to 3rd on a single? This might be a nice secondary way to evaluate speed other than the SB.
Just a random thought that popped into my ol’ domepiece.
PL78 - October 19, 2009

sirbed - October 19, 2009
Its not even a metric, its a simple raw number. it could be called “extra base opportunities via single” and you could even have it as a /out of number, like there were 67 times player B hit a single after player A was on 1st, and player A went from 1st to 3rd 36 times, it would look 36/67.
The only problem is that if the player who hits the single is extremely slow it would normally be a double if it were any other hitter but THEN you could create a metric around that using the player who hits the single power/speed number as to render it n/a.
So as an example, Raj Davis is on 1st, then Nomar comes up and hits a deep single that would normally be a double for the league average player. Davis scores, but this doesnt count because Nomar cant run anymore, and you fully expect most players to score from second on a double.
Now replace Nomar with an able-bodied player, say Ryan Sweeney, who hits a single and Raj goes from 1st to 3rd. There’s that extra base that currently isnt recognized by stats, that’s what Im talking about.
PL78 - October 19, 2009
Somebody end this game
It’s almost 2AM
elcroata - October 19, 2009

elcroata - October 19, 2009
Nice. how is the press talking up Germany's qualification for the World Cup?
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
As business as usual, mostly
elcroata - October 19, 2009
Nice, Definitely a team I'd be glad if England can avoid
If only because I think they could be underestimated by a few teams
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
uh good'o
sirbed - October 19, 2009
funny thing is
I do speak Spanish at home
elcroata - October 19, 2009

sirbed - October 19, 2009
Is that why you have inesway uflay?
Nico - October 19, 2009
How do you not use Fuentes for 2 IP here?
Nico - October 19, 2009
He has to be available

elcroata - October 19, 2009
Game 4
brian.only - October 19, 2009
overtime again
The Halos must have this game, it is a must must win.
Dammit I still can’t believe fuckin’ Fuentes threw that 0-2 meatball to A-Rod the last game, that is loomin’ larg right about now.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
Overtime again
it’s so unfair that whatever team wins the coin flip usually wins
sirbed - October 19, 2009
Nice turnaround.
brian.only - October 19, 2009
Nice post strick out crotch grab from Posada there
bobnothing - October 19, 2009

sirbed - October 19, 2009
Is that Boras behind the catcher?
Amnesiac - October 19, 2009
If it is bean him please
sirbed - October 19, 2009
On the subject of Scott Boras
(whom, incidentally, I think is a very good agent), do you think he sees players like characters in a mario brothers game, and every time they do something good, coins pop out of the top of their heads?
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
I'd like to bop him with my Mario hammer!
sirbed - October 19, 2009
i only noticed kate hudson a few minutes ago
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
I'd like to bop her with my sirbed hammer!
sirbed - October 19, 2009
and Kurt Russel.
Amnesiac - October 19, 2009
So Russell escaped from New York then
sirbed - October 19, 2009
lol
brian.only - October 19, 2009
JaMarcus Russell
He escaped from Philadelphia.
Rated-R Superstar - October 19, 2009
and he captured my heart for one week at least
sirbed - October 19, 2009
Gary Russell
He might have captured it for longer than just a week.
Rated-R Superstar - October 19, 2009
He was awesome yesterday!
lynnzgal - October 19, 2009
Indeed
We had our best day on the ground, our best day protecting the quarterback and Russell did more than any other back in the passing game.
Rated-R Superstar - October 19, 2009
He had a nice game as did Miller
now if we can just get one of our wideouts to just show up
sirbed - October 19, 2009
Chaz Schilens
Schilens is coming back on Sunday. He’s by far our best receiver. Russell trusts him and will throw the ball his way. Maybe his return will open up things for Heyward-Bey and Murphy. Still, if those rookies get their hands on the ball, they have to find a way to catch it.
Rated-R Superstar - October 19, 2009
This was almost a well-played game
Until Abreu-fail. Nonetheless, a good game.
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
time to cook
My people like it when they walk in the door and smell dinner. I’m not sure exactly why, but they always say something as soon as they walk in There’s just something about a caretaker in the kitchen. I guess.
Beef stew, fresh cornbread, milk. Cheap Chardonnay for her.
[inclines head] Thanks for the company, gentle people, please stay well.
paradox - October 19, 2009

emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
Old man usher dancing awesome
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
HUGE
brian.only - October 19, 2009
Damon's running like he's in a three-legged race
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
TWSS
And if you don’t understand, you don’t know about Damon’s third leg.
MobiusKlein - October 19, 2009
Johnny Mathis!!!!!
CHANCES ARE the winning run is in scoring position.

Here comes Rivera, hmmm, bunt him over?
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
Gotta let them swing, surely
Use all your outs – you’ve got a pinch runner in, a hit gives you the win
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
Rivera though Bob
best chance to win it here might be bunts, not one but even 2, like a squeeze at the end.
Rivera is a buntable pitcher and has trouble fielding them sometimes.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
see?
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
well, what that really shows
once again:
what do I know?
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
hmm I'm guessing bob knows nothing
sirbed - October 19, 2009
that's what I was implying, yes
though, on consideration, he should have let them swing. Trust your batters to win you the game!
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
I wonder how effective Rivera is at preventing the squeeze
Seems like “bunt him to 3B, bunt him home” is not out of the question given the hitters coming up and the manager.
Nico - October 19, 2009
If there ever was a part of his game
where he showed nerves, it is fielding bunts and trying to get the lead runner
elcroata - October 19, 2009
I feel really cool now
elcroata - October 19, 2009
prescience!
good call there!
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
thanks :)
elcroata - October 19, 2009
I hope to feel cool just once before I go
sirbed - October 19, 2009
I was just thinking this same thought Nico
and then you posted it, that Rivera, as awesome as he is, is not terribly hard to bunt on and deaden the ball.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
I see the first bunt for sure
the suicide squeeze would be ballsy here
sirbed - October 19, 2009
now it's all but logical to do it
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
You can't do that with the infield in
Massively increases the chance of failure.
PaulThomas - October 19, 2009
willits should be pinch running right here
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
Oh so close!
sirbed - October 19, 2009
What a baffoon
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
woah
this is video from Van Ness station….
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
Thats crazy- I was able to stay in today luckily.
brian.only - October 19, 2009
If they blow this...
brian.only - October 19, 2009
WTF
Mark Teixeira is insane, just not of this fucking world anymore.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
Nice play by Tex
sirbed - October 19, 2009
So, walk Abreu and try to strick out Hunter and Vlad?
doctorK - October 19, 2009
The guy who has saved the game so far, though, is Johnny Damon
Nico - October 19, 2009
Now out of the game...
brian.only - October 19, 2009
Matthis should have challenged his arm
He was good ten feet BEHIND third base :)
elcroata - October 19, 2009
I don't think Mathis realized the ball was thrown away
Nico - October 19, 2009
Looked like it to me, too
Had it been Jeter, not Damon, covering his position there, they would have canceled the commercials to tell us about how awesome his instincts are in October.
elcroata - October 19, 2009
Jeter was probably signalling to him
how else would he have known?
bobnothing - October 19, 2009
The Angels need Dave Henderson to bat now
sirbed - October 19, 2009
This is GREAT managing by Girardi
Nico - October 19, 2009
it's rather NL-esque
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
Great play by Tex
I wonder what would have happened with Willits on 3rd running on contact
elcroata - October 19, 2009
You can't put on a contact play with first and third and no one out and the infield in
If they go home, you end up with 1st and 2nd and one out and can’t score a run on an out anymore.
PaulThomas - October 19, 2009
That's true
Would fit to Angels running game today, though
elcroata - October 19, 2009
OK, that was a little odd
Giving up the DH? Don’t they still have a bench outfielder?
PaulThomas - October 19, 2009
Guzman.
brian.only - October 19, 2009
Fail.
brian.only - October 19, 2009
oy oy oy
Oh Torii that sucked bad.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
gag
67MARQUEZ - October 19, 2009
That sucked hard!
sirbed - October 19, 2009
WOW.
A whole lot of Mariano and Tex.
oblique - October 19, 2009
That's it
slegnA deserve to lose this one
cuppingmaster - October 19, 2009
Um....WOW!
Do not envy Angels’ fans right now
baseballgirl - October 19, 2009
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Get him on, get him over, FAIL
doctorK - October 19, 2009
Hilarious
Trainman - October 19, 2009
omigoodness
that was like an A’s load-bases-don’t-score, despair-inducing alcoholic nightmare of an inning for Angels fans. Halos Heaven must be lining up the vats of Jim Jones’ Special Blend Kool-Aid right now.
emperor nobody - October 19, 2009
mmm Jim Jones Kool-Aid
sirbed - October 19, 2009
99 times out of 100 the LF doesn't "assume" a bad pitcher throw
so early and get into position the way Damon did. That was actually worth gushing over, and if he were Jeter someone probably would be.
Nico - October 19, 2009
Cannot agree more.
67MARQUEZ - October 19, 2009
NEW THREAD
Here.
67MARQUEZ - October 19, 2009
