While A's fans bemoan the fact that it's been three long years since their team last appeared in the ALCS (obligatory historical reference), this season's League Championship Series' offers a smorgasbord of storylines, which I may or may not get to before I step into a meeting.
In the Senior Circuit, we have the first NLCS rematch since the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros traded pennants back in 2004-05 (on their way to getting swept in the World Series). Which reminds me of another thing that drives me crazy about ESPN newscasters. When they say something like "It's the first time this has happened since...", I expect it to be from a long time ago. But it's almost always recent. And they say it like it's been forever! "...since 2006!" And yes, I realize that depending on the feat, three years can be an eternity. Don't ruin this for me.
Things happen in cycles, don't they? The Phillies and Dodgers first met in 1977, then again in '78, and once more in 1983. But until they hooked up last season, it had been a while since either had stood on the porch of the World Series (LA, 1988; Philadelphia 1993).
The Dodgers, of course, have not won it all since The Year We're Not Allowed to Talk About, which has restored my faith in a higher being, while the Phillies are trying to become the first National League team since the 1995-96 Atlanta Braves to make back-to-back trips to the Fall Classic, and the first NL squad since the 1975-76 Reds to hoist that pretty trophy in consecutive seasons.
In fact, no Major League club has held the title for more than one season since the New York Yankees of 1998-2000. And as they are quick to remind us, that really is forever in the Big Apple. For the first six seasons of this decade, either the Angels or Yankees made it this far, but never together; this is the first time they will meet head-to-head in the ALCS (the Angels have twice defeated the Bronx Bombers in Division Series play, in 2002 and 2005).
Anaheim is the sentimental pick, but surely there is no shortage of Nick Swisher fans here, and I am guessing the TV people are hoping for an LA-NY Classic.
But I am sticking with the team I rooted for last year: the Phillies. Who do YOU like?

The only virtuous thing
about the ALCS is that either the Yanks or the Angels have to lose. As much as I loathe the AL East Beasts, I reserve my deepest animosity for those nearest to me. Funny how baseball mirrors life, isn’t it? I can tolerate the Yankee’s hoisting yet another Championship (28, 27, 101st…..whatever) much more easily than I can stomach yet another wave of Angels hats washing over my home town region.
Never mind the blue beast of antiquity, as long as the NL is playing, I’ll be rooting for them.

i am pulling for the Angels in the AL. living in jersey city, i can’t imagine having to stomach yankee fans gloating. if i lived in cali, it might be different…
i don’t remember following the 1988 season (turned 6 in august of that year), but i definitely remember 1989 being the beginning of my A’s love. i was sure that they’d destroy the giants, and they delivered. point being, it does make my stomach turn quite a bit whenever the 1988 WS is mentioned, and also whenever i see a replay of gibson, but i don’t hold any ill will toward the dodger franchise. and i do like torre, ethier, manny, thome, and casey blake (who might be my favorite NL player).
the phillies, on the other hand… philly is a loser city when it comes to sports. they are sooo bitter about their loser crown, which is why it killed me that they shed it last year. i do like their players, but i hate the idea of philly bringing home back to backs. then again, that would bring even more misery to the mets fans around here, which would be terrific… haha i sound so bitter.
so i’m rooting for the dodgers, but aside from them, it’s a decision of who to root against, in descending order of level of dislike:
1. yankees
2. angels
3. phillies
let’s see a freeway series. at least there will be some daylight during WS games.

Iggles fandom is by far the worst
Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers fandom can be annoying, but Philadelphia is a football town and I have a really hard time dealing with all the Iggles love. So part of my parochial desire for the Phils to win again is to make this place less football-centric.

My advice for the ALCS, which was the same for the slegnA-Red Sox series: hope the road team wins a lot so that you can watch fans suffering.
Either the Yankees or the slegnA will lose — that’s good news. And then the one that doesn’t lose can go on to lose (hopefully to the Phillies) in the Series.

Maybe it’s the Adenhart factor, maybe it’s the fact that I loathe the Yankees 100x more than any other team in baseball, but I’m rooting hard for LAA. I’m also rooting, surprisingly, for the Dodgers, because my backup plan to the Yankees losing in the ALCS is for Torre to beat NYY in the WS.

If Adenhart had passed by a different means, the jersey champagne shower would have been cute. I understand why they did it, and I don’t really have a problem with it…but had they thought about it before they did it (doubtful, being caught up in the excitement of clinching and whatnot), they probably would have realized that it looked really bad from a “don’t drink and drive” media standpoint.

Celebrating their achievement and rememberance of Adenhart by getting drunk seems classless. I’ve got no problem with them celebrating with champagne or beer or any other type of alcohol as long as they didn’t decide to use Adenhart’s jersey as a bar rag.

Put the World Series on the West Coast
I can see why Philly would be a popular choice with A’s fans. But as someone who lives in the Eastern time zone and never sees or even hears much about baseball played west of the Mississippi, I think the horribly imbalanced major leagues deserves an L.A. World Series (if the baseball gods permit, let’s keep it on the West Coast for the next decade, with the A’s getting in on the mix).
Each year the playoffs reminds me that major league baseball is broken and needs a radically new collective bargaining agreement. Just watch the baseball ratings versus that other national past time. Heck, these days the Series will probably draw less than a bicycle race (nothing against those…).

A lot is the Adenhart factor. And they don’t have K-Rod anymore.
But some is that they are in our division. I’m sick of ESPN hyping the Yankees. I’m tired of ignorant crap about how the AL East is the far stronger division, when, by record, the AL West is.
Baltimore is awful. The Yankees went 13-5 vs. them, Boston 16-2. The As went 5-1. Let the As play Baltimore 18 times and they probably finish above .500.

I don’t want to sound like an insensitive a-hole, so let me say this to begin with … I’m very sorry that accident happened and I’m very sorry for his family — a tragic, sad loss. That being said, what does Adenhart’s death have to do with his employer(s)? It was where he worked. Period. The Angels get no “extra” love from me because somebody that worked for them died tragically. Feeling badly for Adenhart’s family is an entirely different thing than rooting for the team he played for. Nope. Won’t do it.
Just like I didn’t root for the Yankees in 2001 — and I really resented the notion that because of 9/11, I was “supposed” to root for NY. That’s complete nonsense.
That being said … I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again … I really want a Yankees-Dodgers Series so that Red Sox Nation or Giants fan has to spend the winter reaaaaaallly pissed off that their bitter rival hoisted another banner.

I’ve always been an A’s fan first, and a Dodgers fan when they aren’t playing the A’s (hey, I was raised True Blue, thanks dad!). So I’m clearly pretty giddy about LA’s chance to get to the World Series. I’ll be watching every Dodger game, and if they get to the Series (baseball gods willing), I’ll be doing my damndest to get tickets to Game 3 down in LA.
Over in the AL, I feel really dirty cheering for either team. But, with Swisher on the Yankees, and me hating the Angels most of any baseball team…gotta pull for the Yankees.

Two Answers and a Question
Answer #1: Which series makes for the easiest t.v./radio listening for us on the East Coast? Would a freeway series give us some nice evening ballgames, or would an east coast series let us settle in for afternoon ball? I don’t know how they schedule times, but perhaps just watching/listening is more important than the actual teams.
Answer #2: Although the Yanks payroll attitude is frustrating, my dad reminds me that payroll does not equal winning. Cf. the Mets. When I listened to the series with Minnesota (and who couldn’t root for them?), I couldn’t help but appreciate how hard and excellently many of the individual players went at it. There’s some joy in watching baseball players perform at the very highest level. So whereas I cannot root for our division rivals, and I don’t know I’d root for the Yanks in the WS, I won’t be unhappy seeing them get there, if they play well.
Question #1: My daddy also taught me, “always root for the underdog.” When I am without any other preference, I always fall back on this. But that leaves open the question: Who is the real underdog(s) in these serieses? Your opinions will be much appreciated. Not based on record alone, that is. I guess Slegna & Philly, but what about Dodger pitching, and Philly as the defending champs?

And hating the slegnA with a passion, the default is the Dodgers. I’m hoping for a Hawaiian Gardens Angels of Santa Fe Springs loss to the NYY, then the Dodgers take it in six. Besides, ain’t nothin’ funny ‘bout Death and the Halos have actual Angels on their side this time, in addition to as-yet-living pitchers who will make the Yankee hitters’ minds spin. What said it to me was Bad Vlad and his post-winning-hit interview, when he said through the translator how humbled they all feel to be doing what they’re doing for their deceased teammate and friend. So I look for the Dreaded Red to make fairly fast work of the Payroll Plunderers, lets say Northridge Nephilim of Van Nuys in 5, 6 at the mostest. Look for Torii Hunter to do some typically radical gathering in CF and also to go wild with the stick on the Jabbas and Hugheses.
In the NL it seems more uncertain to me, with this rematch and all. In my little gay heart of hearts I would like an all-LA WS, if only so the ESPNs and East-Coast-centric media would have to stay up and pay attentiion and pretend there is life west of Wyoming. But these Phils, man, hmmmm they really impressed me vs. the Rockies, tearing up the Street like one of those pneumatic drill things that wakes you up in the morning when they are doing construction, usually mere inches from your bedroom window.
The Dodgers are formidable as well, obviously Manny, Andre “what might have been” Ethier en fuego, Christ their big stick off the bench is only a certain Hall of Famer who can hit it further than Babe Ruth, jeebus. This series is really a toss-up but I can’t help but think that Torre’s got this one, although it’ll surely take the full series to do it. So I go for the all-LA World Series, Dodgers in 7.
As for the Finals, well like I said the Angels are going to Heaven, whether we around here like it or not, and looking back it really was obvious on Day 3 of the season what was gonna happen, at least in that 20/20 emptastic hindsight. So I predict the Los Angeles Angels of Adenhart in 5 games…. yikes! is it March yet???

a Freeway World Series would be fun but I think the stress would kill me so I’m going to say Dodgers over Yankees in the WS
Basically I want the Dodgers to win no matter what, I dislike both AL teams and I’m mostly neutral about the Phillies except for the fact that they knocked the Dodgers out last year
