You really think 31 degrees is all that hard for them to deal with? Now Bay Area folks who have nothing but cotton clothing in their closets…that would be a different story.
(and we’ve already seen snow, last weekend), it’s mostly a matter of having proper clothing. The hats with ear flaps, good gloves, wool socks. A couple smart shopping sprees at REI and you can deal with anything nature throws at you up here. I don’t think I could deal with some of those places in the upper Midwest or Canada that routinely go well below zero in January and February, though.
I’ll probably have some huge FanPost when it’s been snowing for five days straight and I have nothing better to do than create the Mother of all wOBA/UZR posts.
Everytime I see a pitcher batting, I'm reminded of that old A's TV commercial.
The one where a pitcher (I forget who, Duke? Zito? Mulder? Huddy?) was signing autographs by some fans, only to see Eric Chavez sign a ball, then launch it to some fans in the RF bleachers. It ended with the pitcher trying the same thing and hurting his back.
The only international audience that mlb.com has will be watching on mlb.com. And, like people here support Barcelona and Chelsea instead of Espanol and Brentford, if you don’t have a rooting interesting, you’ll probably go for a winner.
But on the other hand, it’s not that hard to have IP specific ads in this day and age, I would have thought
outman may not see till late 2010, thats without any setbacks
cardenas still has shown no power and has defensive issues
spencer will be rule 5 eligible after next yr…A’s had a very productive and college heavy draft from 07 so they’ll have to add also simmons, dotlittle, desme, brown, horton, demel, carignan banwart friend, etc Plus sulentic will be eligible too
Third game of the day, NL game, Contreras pitching
It is a good game but it’s a little tough to stay focused. Phils-Rockies is the only show in town tomorrow so I’ll pay more attention…although with the 3 p.m. start time I’ll probably see that one on delay on the DVR.
Bears vs. Bruins in Pasadena this coming Saturday. Loser will be 0-3 in the Pac-10. I’ve made the Pasadena trip the last two times Cal has gone there (both losses)…will pass this time.
If we can beat UCLA this Saturday, I’ll feel pretty confident again. We have Washington State and Arizona State after that. We could be 6-2 and ranked again. Still, there’s a long way to go.
my take: toughest two games of the season scheduled in back-to-back weeks
It left no time to rebuild their confidence, or to correct any errors. If they play those two games a month apart, and only lose those two games, everyone will say it’s a great season. If they play these two games back to back, and lose them both, and can’t get back on track, it sends the rest of the season in a tailspin…
With that said, Riley isn’t great, and we should’ve swapped him out for Mansion or Sweeney in the ‘SC game. No reason to keep him in there if he’s ineffective….
Clearly USC and Oregon (with Masoli; don’t think Blount is that important) are the class of the league. We thought the Bears would make it a triumvirate, but they’re not in that class (probably will finish third though).
Riley has the physical tools (yeah, TWSS) but I think he has issues between the ears. I dismissed the Oregon State fiasco as a rookie mistake and have tried to give him every benefit of the doubt, but he’s just too inconsistent to ever win the big games.
If Cal can recover from the Oregon/USC games, I see them winning most of their remaining games in the season and finishing third in the Pac-10
but that requires them to deal with the mental issues that always seem to trip them up. I don’t know why they have such a difficult time bouncing back from tough games, or how their preparation for road games differs from the home games, but they’ve got some stuff to work on besides Riley’s ineffectiveness (which is a huge deal too).
They should have requested an appeal to the 3B umpire
Don’t know if he saw it, but in any case it always annoys me that the appeal has to be made, rather than the other umpire who might have seen the play differently taking the initiative to come down and talk to the home plate umpire about the play.
kept swisher
more time in the minor for barton, buck, etc
kept cargon, street, smith, etc
Option B:
buck/barton rushed to majors, off and on injuries and inconsistent play.
Sweeney, Gio, DLS

Wallace, Peeterson, DUI Mortensen

Not just Oakland. Fifty car pileup today in Colorado Springs, because of ice and snow…like THAT has never happened in Colorado!
People are now so isolated from outside factors, while driving their cars. Noise insulation, no road feel, no speed sensation.
Instead of slowing down for rain, they speed up!!

you could try www.lippsisters.com
but their liveblog is mostly east coast feed. It’s a great site regardless.
stormtown - October 11, 2009
I like Television Without Pity.
It would be too distracting for me to liveblog actually. Too many things in Mad Men that I would miss.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
Come on, Tulo!
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
Roll Call??
Who’s still here??
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Present
gigglingone - October 11, 2009
I don't usually do the game threads
but, decided to sit in tonight.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
Nice to have you!!
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Counting on you guys for game updates.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
OK - game's tied AGAIN
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
It would really figure
if this game dragged deep into extra innings, say 1 a.m. Denver time.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
I was just thinking - can they speed this up some?? Two hour time change, right?
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
One hour from the West Coast
but that makes it 11:19 p.m. going to the top of the 8th, which means they’ll certainly make midnight.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
yo!
just makin a snack
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
What did you make us??
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
I just roasted an acorn squash and it is DELICIOUS.
It’s really for my lunch tomorrow but I couldn’t help sneak a few bites.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
mmmmm- that's good. Easy to cook too.
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
trader joe's gyoza (potstickers)
doused in soy sauce
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
yummmm.
Leopold Bloom - October 11, 2009
i know
nothing like salt cubes to snack on. neeeeeeiiiiiiiiggggghhh
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
salty snack.....but good.
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Jayson Werth
He was on both of my fantasy teams.
On a side note, should I wait for the graphic?
Rated-R Superstar - October 11, 2009
No, just post it yourself.
ZigFan31 - October 11, 2009
Nah
I’ll pass.
Rated-R Superstar - October 11, 2009
yr Raiders were not good, young man,
though they did manage the one TD you foresaw.
Leopold Bloom - October 11, 2009
Rams
They’re the only team worse than us.
Rated-R Superstar - October 11, 2009
Bills looked pretty pathetic.
Leopold Bloom - October 11, 2009
Did Cal play yesterday?
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Thank goodness, no
Bears vs. Bruins in Pasadena this coming Saturday. Loser will be 0-3 in the Pac-10. I’ve made the Pasadena trip the last two times Cal has gone there (both losses)…will pass this time.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
Cal
If we can beat UCLA this Saturday, I’ll feel pretty confident again. We have Washington State and Arizona State after that. We could be 6-2 and ranked again. Still, there’s a long way to go.
Rated-R Superstar - October 11, 2009
yeah - what do you think is up?? Loss of defensive guys? crappy QB??
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Cal's Struggles
The defense and the quarterback are definitely the two biggest areas of concern in my book. Being outscored 72-6 sucks.
Rated-R Superstar - October 11, 2009
my take: toughest two games of the season scheduled in back-to-back weeks
It left no time to rebuild their confidence, or to correct any errors. If they play those two games a month apart, and only lose those two games, everyone will say it’s a great season. If they play these two games back to back, and lose them both, and can’t get back on track, it sends the rest of the season in a tailspin…
With that said, Riley isn’t great, and we should’ve swapped him out for Mansion or Sweeney in the ‘SC game. No reason to keep him in there if he’s ineffective….
gigglingone - October 11, 2009
Good points...
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Agree about the schedule
Clearly USC and Oregon (with Masoli; don’t think Blount is that important) are the class of the league. We thought the Bears would make it a triumvirate, but they’re not in that class (probably will finish third though).
Riley has the physical tools (yeah, TWSS) but I think he has issues between the ears. I dismissed the Oregon State fiasco as a rookie mistake and have tried to give him every benefit of the doubt, but he’s just too inconsistent to ever win the big games.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
If Cal can recover from the Oregon/USC games, I see them winning most of their remaining games in the season and finishing third in the Pac-10
but that requires them to deal with the mental issues that always seem to trip them up. I don’t know why they have such a difficult time bouncing back from tough games, or how their preparation for road games differs from the home games, but they’ve got some stuff to work on besides Riley’s ineffectiveness (which is a huge deal too).
gigglingone - October 11, 2009
Cal will most assuredly win since ou won't be there
not a statement on you – mind you – just that it’ll figure since you won’t be there to see it!
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
How long has this game been on - it seems like 5 hours.....
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
14 "lopez tonight" commercials worth
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
LOL
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
they've played for three straight days.
No lie.
Leopold Bloom - October 11, 2009
LOL too
Maybe I’m burning out on BB. ONly one game tomorrow? I’LL probb=ably miss it b/c of time change
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
time change?
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
it' will start while I'm at work....time difference would have been more accurate
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
it’s not the spring forward fall back thing yet
stormtown - October 11, 2009
phew thank god
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
no - I'm tired so misspeaking....
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Since 7:07.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
wow - seems like sooooo much longer
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
that one had some hair on it baby
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
Doesn't it seem like Matty played for the A's like 20 years ago?
Leopold Bloom - October 11, 2009
wasn't it?? HAHAHA
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
yet, he doesn't look a day older than when we let him go
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
no, because 20 years ago we were in the WS
and the earth shook and blah blah. But it does seem like ages ago.
stormtown - October 11, 2009

Black Tacos
Those are happening in Taco Bell, no?
Rated-R Superstar - October 11, 2009
Yeah.....what the heck ARE they.....
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
it looks like a blue corn taco shell
and the guy says with pepper jack sauce. yeah.
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
I'm thinking it's a black food coloring taco shell.
And is that it? Pepper jack sauce? Doesn’t seem like it warrants a huge expensive advertising campaign.
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
A lot bleary-eyed people in Philly tomorrow
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
o hai look, its Huston Street
lets see if he mans up for once in his life.
PL78 - October 11, 2009
typical street
his velocity is down too
When he hits free agency he’s destined to be with the rangers
Asfan4ever723 - October 11, 2009
Hello all
late to the party
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
HI!
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
hey there!
you’re missing a marathon
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
hi!
gigglingone - October 11, 2009
Better late than nevah
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Huston Street looks weird in pinstripes.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
Ooh. Close call.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
wow hit him before he left the box
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
They should have requested an appeal to the 3B umpire
Don’t know if he saw it, but in any case it always annoys me that the appeal has to be made, rather than the other umpire who might have seen the play differently taking the initiative to come down and talk to the home plate umpire about the play.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
yeah they do it weird
this was also applicable in the mauer call the other night
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
2 missed calls
Asfan4ever723 - October 11, 2009
Phillies win ties this series??
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
they'd be up 2-1
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
nope, it's tied now
gigglingone - October 11, 2009
ok.....
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
Hmmm... Lidge to close it out.
This ought to be interesting
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
H. Street #closerfail #leadgiverupperer
PL78 - October 11, 2009
Don't need reminder why we got rid of Street
How did he only blow 2 saves. Did he face the Nationals 35 times?
Looked like he had no idea where the ball was going in this outing.
FAIL.
Trainman - October 11, 2009
To be fair, I completely expected Huston to have a horrible 2009.
I figured Coors would take the bite out of his already inconsistent slider.
Guess I was wrong. He’s pitched great this season.
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
But bit so much in these playoffs
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
its so sad
how overrated closers are and yet very few teams rate them highly. The closer should be the most unhittable reliever you have.
PL78 - October 11, 2009
Huh?
I’m lost.
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
me too buddy
me too…
PL78 - October 11, 2009
I was at Disneyland
Street is getting squeezed. And got jobbed twice on that call.
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
not his best job today, though
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
HOW is this game still on?
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
One reason I was glad the Angels beat the Red Sox
is that we are spared the torpor of 5-hour Yankees-Red Sox postseason games. This one is somehow going to hit 4 hours, though.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
Why hello (again, again).
I didn’t expect to see baseball still going on. AN After Dark?
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
Can you imagine being a Phillies fan with work tomorrow?
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
No pressure, huh Carlos?
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
carlos?
I’m thinking more like pressure on Lidge, considering his well-publicized fails
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
he's this kid that has been their hottest hitter and they're down a run in the bottom of the ninth.
I can see him feeling a little bit of pressure here.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
do they not have anyone with fewer blown saves??
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
madsen already pitched
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
Literally any other pitcher in MLB would qualify for the title of "Having Less Blown Saves Than Brad Lidge".
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
GIAMBI!!!
C’mon walkoff here.
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
Hope *someone* wore his gold thong today!
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
*shudder*
Not a visual image I needed right now……
gigglingone - October 11, 2009
Um. Ew.
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
Don't even. You probably LOVE that visual image... ;)
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
I kinda want to paint a gold thong on my Jason Giambi bobblehead.
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
That would be AWESOME.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
former A's everywhere!!
Asfan4ever723 - October 11, 2009
yeah that HR from Cargo off Blanton
lol sometimes we really are the farm team for everyone
PL78 - October 11, 2009
I'm not enjoying watching CarGon and Ethier be awesome :-)
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
I am!
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
rajai and sweeney are better!!!
Asfan4ever723 - October 11, 2009
It's sorta bittersweet
for what could have been but also makes me think of how great our scouting is and has been….so much talent comes through our system
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
What are they chanting?
Rock-tober?
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
THAT, however, looked like the Giambi we had.
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009
yup - wasted at bat
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
da da du du TULO!
baseballgirl - October 11, 2009

And done.
Should be a good match tomorrow though: jimenez vs. lee
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
What time?
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
3pm
cuppingmaster - October 11, 2009
5:30 AM our time.
Something like that.
danmerqury - October 11, 2009
That's not a time.
pam5981 - October 11, 2009
2:30?
it is a holiday afterall
Future Ed - October 11, 2009

Future Ed - October 11, 2009

Future Ed - October 11, 2009
Night all - might see you tmr
BERRYJO - October 11, 2009
If anybody out there
actually watched 27 innings of baseball between 9 a.m. and 11:15 p.m. today, you probably should be awarded some kind of medal.
Soaker - October 11, 2009
There was also a football option
Catching the 1st half of 49ers failure in that odd hiatus from AL game 1 to AL game 2.
GoA's - October 11, 2009
Which would you rather have?
Option A:
kept swisher
more time in the minor for barton, buck, etc
kept cargon, street, smith, etc
Option B:
buck/barton rushed to majors, off and on injuries and inconsistent play.
Sweeney, Gio, DLS
3 months of a lifeless holliday
Wallace, Peeterson, DUI Mortensen
Asfan4ever723 - October 11, 2009
Street pitched terribly again, huh?
Go figure. Almost as good as the Holliday fielding error. Almost.
