Only one game today, with PHI-COL snowed out. The Dodgers try to sweep the Cardinals in St. Louis, with Joel Pineiro throwing for STL and Vicente Padilla throwing for the Dodgers (or is it "at the Cardinals"?).
So far, I’ve completed the shopping for the projects, and spread a mess of stuff all over the floor. Then I discovered that the cordless drill is out of power and has the wrong-size bit in it, so I decided to sit down and watch some baseball while I gathered strength before going to search for the power cord and the drill bits.
I’d watch the NFL over the MLB playoffs. We only get the NFL once a week for about four months. The only MLB playoff game I’m paying attention to tomorrow is the last one because it’ll just be that and Colts-Titans game.
I’m going with a 34-7 win for the Giants. I don’t know how we’re going to score a touchdown, but I think we will find the end zone for the second time in four games.
Did you know Fresno is the dumbest city in the U.S. according to CNN
I don’t know if that matters in college football but I thought it was funny. I know I almost went to the Universtiy of Hawaii but I was afraid I’d never go to class.
hate to say it but the Angels are dealing, I think they win the whole bag this time… the Adenhart unearthly Halos-with-halos mojo will stifle the Yankees.
it’s hard not to look at the Halos and see a ring sliding onto a finger, painful as it is to say that.
All is well though, friends, for the time is soon when we are watching Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill pitch in October, maybe as soon as a year from right now.
but we must respect the more-than-worthy adversary in this case, the Halos look primed to take the title IMO, sad as it is for us in these parts to say such a thing.
destroyed the Cards’ season, I’m afraid, you just can’t tank a game like that in a short series when if you catch the damn ball you’re on the airplane with a split, can’t happen.
I’m not even a Raiders fan, but the tuck rule game pissed me off in the moment, pisses me off today and will probably piss me off the rest of my life. The Raiders got jobbed that game.
In truth, the Patriots were a little lucky. OK, a lot. Referee Walt Coleman authored, on many levels, the play of the game.
When blitzing cornerback Charles Woodson blindsided Brady, karate-chopping the ball to the ground, and linebacker Greg Biekert recovered at the Raiders’ 47-yard-line with 1:43 left, the game appeared to be over — with the Raiders ahead 13-10. But the Patriots had one last chance thanks to instant replay and, after reviewing the play in which Brady appeared to pull the ball down and then fumble, Coleman inexplicably ruled it an incomplete pass.
“It was obvious,” a terse Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said. "I thought it was a fumble, but the officials thought otherwise.
“You can never count on anything in the NFL. Say what you want, (Brady) made some great plays when he had to.”
Well, what about it? Was it a fumble or an incomplete pass?
“Uh…,” Brady said when questioned. “You know, he hit me. I wasn’t sure. Yeah, I was throwing the ball. How do you like that? Damn right. Damn right.”
Yeah I was talking to a coworker who lives in Boston and is a big Patriots fan..
He said with total sincerity…that was the way the rule was written and the referees were just enforcing the correct rule…I couldnt believe it…I thought he would be like, yeah we got away with one there….I am still pissed about that call!!
and despite making it to the Super Bowl the next year ( I can’t remember what happened in that game) the Raiders have gone straight to hell in the following years.
And you can make the case that that one blown call changed the course of history in the NFL...
Who knows what woul dhave happened, but the Raiders would have been in the Superbowl…and you just dont know what would have happened with that patriots team..they may never have gone on to dominate the following years, they may have made some moves and broke up the team or made some chnages that they didnt make becuase they made it to the superbowl…Just a lot of things that happened because of one blown call!!
I hope that next year, no team goes up 2-0 in the ALDS because then they won’t have a reason to talk about teams that blew a 2-0 lead. Exception: the A’s have permission to sweep the ALDS next year.
i don’t think so…. i can’t tell how up-to-date the standings chart i’m looking at is. 4 teams go direct, the 5th plays off, the 6th stays home. brazil, chile, paraguay have q’d. argentina is 4th right now, ecuador 5, uruguay 7. what bobnothing meant is that 2 go through to the next round, but 1 of those goes to the mini playoff round and the other is just in the WC.
by both Uruguay (who hosts Argentina in a few days) and Ecuador (who are playing at Chile, which won’t be easy, except that Chile has already qualified). If Uruguay and Ecuador win, then Argentina is out.
though, I’m no expert in South American soccerball; I think your best hope is that they scrape through, and then he has a melt down and quits before the World Cup
of course not before weds. but my fear is that winning on weds will redeem him and they’ll keep him on. he’s got absolutely no idea what he’s doing there.
I feel like John Cleese in the "Dead Parrot sketch"
Cleese: Why did you tell me I wasn’t in Bolton?
Palin: It was a pun.
Cleese: A pun?!?
Palin: No, not a pun. What do you call it when a word is spelled the same backwards and forwards?
Cleese: A palindrome?
Palin: Yeah, that’s it!
Cleese: The palidrome of “Bolton” is “Notlob!” No, I’m afraid I’m not prepared to continue this conversation as it’s gotten too silly.
Some might mention that England were very lucky that
Terry Fenwick wasn’t sent off in the first half.
If we’re honest, though, and the picture bears this out, I feel – Peter Shilton mistimes his leap for the ball. There’s no way that Maradona, hand or no hand, should get to that ball first.
ABC: Michigan at No. 12 Iowa
CBS: No. 1 Florida at No. 4 LSU
ESPN: Colorado at No. 2 Texas
ESPN2: No. 22 Georgia Tech at Florida State
CSNBA: Stanford at Oregon State
I recently came to have DVR service, so I’m doing what someone else suggested the other day and letting the first quarter pass harmlessly, then flying through quarters two and three and then watching quarter four live.
TWC put “flags” on all shows now. I was transferring things off to my laptop to save them and watch on my iPhone, but now I can’t hence I needed the extra space.
this game seems over and it’s just too damn good to be true… did Matt Holliday singlehandedly alter the trajectory of this series and tank the Cards season in the process? I feel like the kid at the end of Animal House who has the cheerleader land in his lap unexpectedly and goes “Thank you, God!!”.
Towards the end of August right? Who would have thought that he, Wainwright, and Carpenter would pitch in this series, and Padilla might be the one to outpitch them both
plays in the weaker league and has Manny for protection
he cant hit lefties
terrible defensive OF
I’m not convinced if he remained in oakland he’d hit even close to as he’s hitting now and most of his offensive value is balanced out due his other weaknesses
A’s traded a solid, not great prospect who has exceeded expectations for 2 positions of need w/ bradley and perez. It didnt work out, but time to move on.
It's always a steal if the 1B is holding the runner
I don’t think that’s a rule or anything, but that seems to be the way the scorers decide. If the 1B is playing in his normal position, it’s indifference.
But I really don’t like 3pm starts; it really makes you feel like you’ve been watching the game for too long It’s light outside when it starts, and dusk when it finishes. Not good.
It’s kind of sad that Holliday will be hearing about that play for the rest of the offseason (and beyond)… oh well. I’m sure he’ll still get a big contract somewhere, although maybe not with the Cards anymore…
Should’ve played better in Oakland, chump. Enjoy the offseason. Maybe shag a few fly balls — you know, have your dad hit you some pop-ups — you’ll get better, don’t worry.
Please stop butchering the English language. If Billy Beane has “inferred that Cliff Pennington will be the A’s SS next season,” from whom has he drawn this inference and why wasn’t Billy informed directly? Thank you for your consideration on this excruciatingly important matter.
Dodgers sweep. I don’t think anybody predicted that with the seasons that Carpenter and Wainright had.
I wonder if Holliday will resign with St. Louis because he wants redemption or if he will sign somewhere else to get away from the bad memories? He will probably just go to whoever gives him the most money.
Hey everybody!

pam5981 - October 10, 2009
actually, a friend and I are seriously considering a Bay Area - Chicago - St Louis baseball trip next year
Poss with a Kane County game mixed in, too, depending on timing
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
Do it
I’ve taken three baseball stadiums tours and they were all fun. The east coast trip to Boston and New York is great as well.
I’m glad I got to see the old Yankee stadium and I got to see Tigers Stadium before it closed on another trip.

Yeah, I don't need much of an excuse to go out to Chicago; I have some pretty good friends there
It’s mostly a matter of cash, to be honest

did anyone think the Dodgers would sweep the Cardinals? I know some people picked LA to win but I didn’t see anyone predicting a 3 and out.
sirbed - October 10, 2009
the Holliday play
destroyed the Cards’ season, I’m afraid, you just can’t tank a game like that in a short series when if you catch the damn ball you’re on the airplane with a split, can’t happen.
emperor nobody - October 10, 2009
holliday is a goat
I don’t care if he hit the HR earlier, he personally lost that game for them.
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
his Karma is not good, let's just say
when I saw that picture of him clamming that catch, I thought, oooh he costs them their season AND we have Brett Wallace, this is pretty sweet.
emperor nobody - October 10, 2009
Instant karmas gonna get you

Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
instant karma
is that like that starbucks instant coffee? comes in a little plastic packet?
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
has anyone tried that yet?
any good?
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
I'm a pure soul
I don’t drink coffee. Just my morning sniff of glue and I’m off!
sirbed - October 10, 2009
glue
you mean cream of wheat?
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
uh...ya cream of wheat
that’s what I meant
sirbed - October 10, 2009
that stuff tastes like glue to me
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
I haven't had cream of wheat since about 1981
but I eat oatmeal every morning….I’m pretty sure this is the most interesting fact I’ve ever posted here on AN.
sirbed - October 10, 2009
oatmeal every morning is supposed to be, like, hella good for you.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
I live clean Bloomy
it works believe me. I eat oatmeal every morning and do an hour on the treadmill and I stay in really good shape no matter what I eat for dinner.

Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
When I get old and lose my mind
at least I’ll forget 1988 and the tuck rule game and the refs giving the Lakers all those foul shots agains the Kings in the Western Confernce finals.
sirbed - October 10, 2009
Yeah all of that was total CRAP!!
wacchampions - October 10, 2009
You know,
I’m not even a Raiders fan, but the tuck rule game pissed me off in the moment, pisses me off today and will probably piss me off the rest of my life. The Raiders got jobbed that game.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
Referees
If anyone has a beef about referees, it’s the Raiders.
Rated-R Superstar - October 10, 2009

I think there a couple people here with whom
retelling the tale might be like discussing various painful episodes in our collective A’s past. Let me find a link.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
okay
here you go.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
hmmm
i guess i need to look for the video on that to see how jobbed they were
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
Seriously, they REALLY were.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
here was ESPN's take
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
A horrible day to be sure
I know my Dad has that game second only to the immaculate reception game
sirbed - October 10, 2009
i see
so Brady DID tuck it, meaning it was a fumble?
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
exactly, and it was called the opposite.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
thanks for the explanation
I like Brady’s answer though. Classic “gotcha” moment
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
Yeah I was talking to a coworker who lives in Boston and is a big Patriots fan..
He said with total sincerity…that was the way the rule was written and the referees were just enforcing the correct rule…I couldnt believe it…I thought he would be like, yeah we got away with one there….I am still pissed about that call!!
wacchampions - October 10, 2009
And Gruden left that off-season
and despite making it to the Super Bowl the next year ( I can’t remember what happened in that game) the Raiders have gone straight to hell in the following years.
sirbed - October 10, 2009
And you can make the case that that one blown call changed the course of history in the NFL...
Who knows what woul dhave happened, but the Raiders would have been in the Superbowl…and you just dont know what would have happened with that patriots team..they may never have gone on to dominate the following years, they may have made some moves and broke up the team or made some chnages that they didnt make becuase they made it to the superbowl…Just a lot of things that happened because of one blown call!!
wacchampions - October 10, 2009
No doubt about that
I still wonder if Gruden had stayed how good that team could have been.
sirbed - October 10, 2009
so the butterfly flapping its wings in Foxboro
has a world-changing effect elsewhere?
emperor nobody - October 10, 2009
that damn butterfly hates the Raiders!
sirbed - October 10, 2009
I was watching the tuck game
and agree the Raiders got jobbed… but didn’t they go to the Super Bowl the next year after that? Or am I mixing it up?
I’m not a football guy so forgive me if I have no clue.
emperor nobody - October 10, 2009
after Gruden laft and Gruden and that Tampa D ate em up.
Didn’t help that Callahan was too stupid to change the audibles.
Leopold Bloom - October 10, 2009
We should have hired Dirty Harry Callahan instead
OK punks do you feel lucky?
sirbed - October 10, 2009
they did but Gruden left after the tuck game and he killed us
in that Super Bowl. At least I think he did I can’t remember for sure.
sirbed - October 10, 2009
Ill take those memories...bad or not..we were in the playoffs...
wacchampions - October 10, 2009
true dat
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
ugh.
I hope that next year, no team goes up 2-0 in the ALDS because then they won’t have a reason to talk about teams that blew a 2-0 lead. Exception: the A’s have permission to sweep the ALDS next year.
whiteshoes40 - October 10, 2009
There we go, then, 2-0 Mexico.
Argentina, bye the bye, are 1-0 up against Peru and are hanging on…

So has Argentina guaranteed itself no worse than the play-in game against the top CONCACAF non-qualifier?
Nick - October 10, 2009
Yeah... who, at the moment (pending tonight's game in Honduras)
Will be Honduras or Costa Rica.
If Honduras win tonight, there’s a chance team USA! USA! could slip, but that’s fairly unlikely.
Shouldn’t underestimate either of those two teams, mind
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
i don’t think so…. i can’t tell how up-to-date the standings chart i’m looking at is.
AV - October 10, 2009
yeah, sorry
you’re right – Argentina needs a point against Uruguay to guarantee at least a playoff
here’s the table:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/tables?league=fifa.worldq.conmebol&cc=5901
Ecuador have a tough game in Chile
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
Yeah, it looks like Argentina could get passed
by both Uruguay (who hosts Argentina in a few days) and Ecuador (who are playing at Chile, which won’t be easy, except that Chile has already qualified). If Uruguay and Ecuador win, then Argentina is out.
Nick - October 10, 2009
Argentina have it in their own hands, so to speak
but they do still need a result
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
i hope palermo’s goal just now was a momentum changer.
AV - October 10, 2009
I think a momentum changer would be firing Diego...
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
i do pray for that…
AV - October 10, 2009
I don't see it happening before Wednesday
though, I’m no expert in South American soccerball; I think your best hope is that they scrape through, and then he has a melt down and quits before the World Cup
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
of course not before weds. but my fear is that winning on weds will redeem him and they’ll keep him on. he’s got absolutely no idea what he’s doing there.

Though, his first goal was phenomenal.
I live in San Francisco, currently
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
it was definitely memorable. i can recall that game more than i can the final.
AV - October 10, 2009
Yeah, the final, like many finals, was pretty miserable
For me, the most enjoyable game of that world cup was England’s first round game against Poland, and Lineker’s hat trick…
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
Kinda makes the LF ump last night
seem less awful in comparison.
Nick - October 10, 2009
Some might mention that England were very lucky that
Terry Fenwick wasn’t sent off in the first half.
If we’re honest, though, and the picture bears this out, I feel – Peter Shilton mistimes his leap for the ball. There’s no way that Maradona, hand or no hand, should get to that ball first.
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
You mean because he makes David Eckstein look like Manute Bol?

wainwright pitched pretty good
Future Ed - October 10, 2009
Andrre Ethier is overrated
plays in the weaker league and has Manny for protection
he cant hit lefties
terrible defensive OF
I’m not convinced if he remained in oakland he’d hit even close to as he’s hitting now and most of his offensive value is balanced out due his other weaknesses

Future Ed - October 10, 2009
Buhbye.
Have a nice offseason, Matt Holliday.
pam5981 - October 10, 2009
he'll have more fun than us.
Future Ed - October 10, 2009
and if not
he’ll have more money
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
And more money
Nick - October 10, 2009
Sure. But I'l always have my bitterness.
pam5981 - October 10, 2009
Holliday's not done with his defensive miscues
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
which is worth more to me
Future Ed - October 10, 2009
It's the things that money can't buy that make life worthwhile
Nick - October 10, 2009
gotta love the bitterness
it makes life worth living
sirbed - October 10, 2009
Ok, I love baseball
But I really don’t like 3pm starts; it really makes you feel like you’ve been watching the game for too long It’s light outside when it starts, and dusk when it finishes. Not good.
bobnothing - October 10, 2009
last chance for the Cards
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
Done and done.
Ok, I don’t want the Angels to win of course, but and LA/LA series would be fun.
pam5981 - October 10, 2009
ewwww
OaklandSi - October 10, 2009
Hah. Sorry.
pam5981 - October 10, 2009

cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
101 mph to win the series
OaklandSi - October 10, 2009
At least Giants fans will be unhappy!
Englishmajor - October 10, 2009
One of my cousins in SF
grew up in St Louis and is a huge Cards fan.
Her husband is a huge Giants fan.
Not happy times chez eux.
My LA cousins will be happy, though.
Nick - October 10, 2009
are you sure
Asfan4ever723 - October 10, 2009
LOL!
Nick - October 10, 2009
San Francisco Giants Trophy Case
I sent that picture to a friend who was a Giants fan. He was pissed.
Rated-R Superstar - October 10, 2009

College Football
There are a lot of games going on right now and they’re basically all good.
Rated-R Superstar - October 10, 2009
or
there’s a preseason warriors-suns game on TNT. lol.
cuppingmaster - October 10, 2009
hockey for me. go sharks!
likeiwouldtellyou - October 10, 2009
wow, that series was over quickly.
It’s kind of sad that Holliday will be hearing about that play for the rest of the offseason (and beyond)… oh well. I’m sure he’ll still get a big contract somewhere, although maybe not with the Cards anymore…
whiteshoes40 - October 10, 2009
I'm not sad
Should’ve played better in Oakland, chump. Enjoy the offseason. Maybe shag a few fly balls — you know, have your dad hit you some pop-ups — you’ll get better, don’t worry.
Vacafan - October 10, 2009
I hear Mark McGwire might be willing to work with him in the offseason...
OaklandSi - October 10, 2009
Yeah, I do feel sorry for LaRussa, though. Holliday, not so much.
likeiwouldtellyou - October 10, 2009
In your face Matt Holliday.
OldhamA - October 10, 2009
Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude
doctorK - October 10, 2009
ouch
OaklandSi - October 10, 2009
That's quick work by the scoreboard people in the background.
OldhamA - October 10, 2009
Quick work, yes, but by me!
Original here
doctorK - October 10, 2009
Well that's just sneaky!
OldhamA - October 10, 2009
Dear RotoWorld,
Please stop butchering the English language. If Billy Beane has “inferred that Cliff Pennington will be the A’s SS next season,” from whom has he drawn this inference and why wasn’t Billy informed directly? Thank you for your consideration on this excruciatingly important matter.
Sincerely,
Me.
Nico - October 10, 2009
Chavez who got the information from Forst.
OldhamA - October 10, 2009
Who was walking Chavy's dog while Billy was out of town.
Nico - October 10, 2009
Wow
Dodgers sweep. I don’t think anybody predicted that with the seasons that Carpenter and Wainright had.
I wonder if Holliday will resign with St. Louis because he wants redemption or if he will sign somewhere else to get away from the bad memories? He will probably just go to whoever gives him the most money.
