is that his errors are just terrible mistakes. It’s not like he bouncing throws to first all the time because he has no arm — he just can’t pick the ball up. He’s a reasonably competent 2B — just get the ball in your glove like you’re at second. Geez.
Not that there aren’t exceptions (like RRS!) but it seems like the average age over there is far lower, and the discourse and conversation reflects that.
I’m the worst offender of name calling at StR, and I posted one comment today, and that’s my first in over a month. I’ve earned my reputation as an asshole there.
On the other hand, I’m not 17 either. I know more than most basketball fans do.
But there were a lot of forces at work that kept that from being a reality. Clay Bennett is to blame, but there are a lot of others to go right along with him. In of itself, I think his motives were not that bad.
because his papers were withdrawn from the public for about 50 years, so all the history about him was written by his enemies. Much of it is conventional wisdom, even though it’s proven false.
There is a Confederate monument in Montana. There are plenty of ways of skewing an argument one way or the other. It happens historically, academically, and in modern times.
I know you’re aware of all this sirbed. My point is that it doesn’t take much to skew a particular opinion one way or the other.
iglew got me interested in why that picture of Ryan was taken
This site is interesting — they’re doing a project on athletes’ tattoos, so there were several other baseball players photographed. Go look at the pictures. Jermaine Dye has a really creepy tattoo. Also, Brian Anderson (Ry’s old BFF) was involved too.
Oh, and there’s another very pretty pic of Ry. I can’t figure out how to post it here. But it’s quite nice.
he project is a high end, fine art coffee table book featuring professional athletes and their body art and the stories behind it. Yesterday, in the downtown nooks and crannies, I had the opportunity to shoot an amazing athlete, Ryan Sweeney of the Oakland A’s. He was the perfect model and had an amazingly laid back attitude about having his shirt off in the streets!
Although the local news kept cutting in with thunderstorm updates. It’s just a thunderstorm, people, calm down. We missed the beginning and end of the show. It was sad.
No more Kennedy please

To be unfair,
I don’t care, he sucks!!!!!1111
Nico - October 1, 2009
I can understand why he didn't make the play on that high chopper
that he would have had to barehand and throw all in one motion. That’s a 3B-only play.
But picking up that grounder cleanly and stepping on 3B? He’s physically capable of doing that.

Rated-R Superstar - October 1, 2009
No new ownership is likely to keep Rowell

Al Attles made a ton of mistakes that pretty much killed the Dubs in the 80’s until George Karl got there. (God damn I’m old.)

They shouldn’t keep Rowell.
Rated-R Superstar - October 1, 2009

LB's list
This is stupid.
Why the heck are you creating a hierarchy out of presidents?!
Leopold Bloom - October 1, 2009
because it's fun
sirbed - October 1, 2009
There was BIG discussion about who was the best prez.....
BERRYJO - October 1, 2009
I belong to a historical society (I know I'm real cool)
and this is our favorite game
sirbed - October 1, 2009
I can't do it, because I'm conflicted.
The presidents who accomplished the most were the ones who increased executive power, but in general I don’t think that is a good thing.
iglew - October 1, 2009
Agreed.
lynnzgal - October 1, 2009
I'm just glad people aren't touting Woodrow Wilson
any more. Worst president ever.
iglew - October 1, 2009
They liked his invading Mexico
It turned them on I think.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
Invaded Russia, too. Twit.
I can’t say I’m real fond of his assistant secretary of the navy either.
iglew - October 1, 2009
Yeah he was an asshole that's for sure
For good measure, he watched Birth of the Nation with the KKK in the White House in a private screening. That’s my single favorite fact about him.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
Wilson is so overrated
sirbed - October 1, 2009
And Harding equally underrated.
I love Warren Harding.
He was the last president with a foreign policy I could support.
iglew - October 1, 2009
What was his foreign policy?
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
(Neutrality if I remember right)
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
isolationism
Leopold Bloom - October 1, 2009
Yeah same thing almost
But yeah, isolationism.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
He thought imperialism was a waste of money.
Wanted to avoid war and negotiate arms reduction treaties so as to strengthen the peacetime economy.
iglew - October 1, 2009
It's pretty obvious Dick Cheney would have shot him
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
Shhh. No references to contemporary politicians.
History good. Politics = CGV.
iglew - October 1, 2009
Okay
So would have Nixon, Reagan, and every post WW2 Prez. LOL
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
Warren Harding said he wasn't smart enough
to be President. It was the only thing he was right about.
sirbed - October 1, 2009
LOL Sirbed
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
Harding's reputation suffered
because his papers were withdrawn from the public for about 50 years, so all the history about him was written by his enemies. Much of it is conventional wisdom, even though it’s proven false.
iglew - October 1, 2009
i'm sorry iglew
but your Harding fan club is going to be a small group
sirbed - October 1, 2009
I think most President's truly suck
And do very little good other than for rich people.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
Jackson scores pretty well on that point.
(So long as you aren’t black or Native American.) Still, better than nothing.
iglew - October 1, 2009
Yeah that's true
The problem is that it was so long ago, and slavery still ruled the day for another 20 years afterward.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
John Dean is on my side,
but only because he’s from Harding’s home town.
(Yes, that John Dean.)
iglew - October 1, 2009
I read Dean's book about Harding
sirbed - October 1, 2009
Pleasant but bland.
Any publicity helps, but the real work is Downes’s biography, which was Dean’s main source.
So if you’ve read Dean, you know about the papers then.
iglew - October 1, 2009
I just have never read anything
that made me think that Harding was anything but a failure as President but maybe I need to read more about him.
sirbed - October 1, 2009
Read anything that has taken a neutral view on what a failed Obama presidency might look like?
My point is that it’s all subjective. (You can use any president in the last 20 years and substitute that guy for Obama.)
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
I always read at least a few
books about someone before I make up my mind. I’ve probably read 60 books about Nixon but he’s a jerk in all of them
sirbed - October 1, 2009
Yes of course
I wasn’t saying that you believed one particular person or point. Night.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
oh I know I got what you were saying
sirbed - October 1, 2009
And to make my final point of the night
There is a Confederate monument in Montana. There are plenty of ways of skewing an argument one way or the other. It happens historically, academically, and in modern times.
I know you’re aware of all this sirbed. My point is that it doesn’t take much to skew a particular opinion one way or the other.
pookeyguru - October 1, 2009
history gets rewritten all the time
and of course opinions change
sirbed - October 1, 2009
hindsight kinda does that.....
BERRYJO - October 1, 2009
they say it's 20/20
sirbed - October 1, 2009
Reading more about Wilson
will help you appreciate Harding.
iglew - October 1, 2009
I've been reading about the Giants' closer,
and it hasn’t changed my appreciation of Warren Harding one bit.
Nico - October 1, 2009
ya Harding didn't have much of a fastball
sirbed - October 1, 2009
He was also the great grandfather of celebrity kneecapper, Tonyah Harding
(this might not be true)
bobnothing - October 1, 2009
then again it might
67MARQUEZ - October 1, 2009
There's no reference to it either way on wikipedia
so it might still be true!

I hope "Other" means "out of a hat".
danmerqury - October 1, 2009
"Other"
Yeah, I put all the names of Republican presidents in hats, picked out five and just ranked them really quickly.
Rated-R Superstar - October 1, 2009
I wouldn't go that far
but any list with Clinton as the second best President… ever, is somewhat flawed

iglew got me interested in why that picture of Ryan was taken
This site is interesting — they’re doing a project on athletes’ tattoos, so there were several other baseball players photographed. Go look at the pictures. Jermaine Dye has a really creepy tattoo. Also, Brian Anderson (Ry’s old BFF) was involved too.
Oh, and there’s another very pretty pic of Ry. I can’t figure out how to post it here. But it’s quite nice.
