Game, set, match: A's season ends with 4-3 loss to Mariners

And so it goes. Another season is now in the books and I think I can speak for the community when I say that I'm kind of relieved that the season is finally finished. We can all now just take one collective breath, look at the good and bad parts of this team objectively and over the next few months outline our solutions to the deficencies on the A's roster. But just for now, take a second and think of a memorable moment from the past 7 months, because memories are all that are left in the A's 2009 season.

The team ended the season on a 5-game losing streak against two of their division rivals in the Rangers and Seattle. Josh Outman pitched well enough today, pounding the strike zone and flashing his upper-90s heater, however he also served up the hits and 4 runs and 1 walk. Outman ends the season with a 4.56 ERA. He's certainly opened some eyes around the organization and while he's definitely hittable, he's also got intriguing potential. He was planning on heading the Arizona Fall League this winter to get stretched out as a starter, but since that already happened this past month, he'll rest up and report to Spring Training with the rest of the A's.

Seattle mounted rallies against Outman and the A's in the 1st, 2nd and 5th, pushing over 4 runs total to squeak by the A's, who scored all 3 of their runs in the 1st inning via a T-Buck solo homer to open the game, a single by Sweeney, a Cust walk and a 2-run RBI double by Denorfia. The A's bullpen, unquestionably the biggest strength of this young team going forward, pitched 2 innings of scoreless ball in relief for Outman who went 6 innings for the loss, as the A's offense failed to come through with men on-base as they twice left the bases loaded in the later innings without pushing over even a single run.

The team finishes the season 75-86, one game worse than last season's record. But hey, look at the bright side, at least this team isn't in as much trouble as the sorry Mariner franchise. I don't envy the good folks at U.S.S. Mariner and Lookout Landing, that's for sure!

- Joey Devine ends the season with the lowest singe-season ERA (0.59) in major league history for any pitcher that has pitched at least 40 innings. That's probably arguably a more amazing feat than even Ziggy's unbelievable scoreless-innings-to-start-a-career streak earlier this seasin. I'm looking forward to seeing Joey closing games next season and for several seasons beyond that.

- Travis Buck sure enjoys his home-cookin! The Washington-state native homered for the 2nd time in the series and added a double and a single. Buck certainly ended the season on an upnote (.300+ average and 4 homers in September) and has certainly played his way back into the A's outfield plans for 2009.

- Daric Barton ended his disappointing season on a upnote as well as he went 6-for-11 this final series.  It's tough to get a read on what the team's plans are for Barton going forward. He certainly hasn't helped his cause at all with his terrible eason at the plate.

-  Jack Cust walked twice and struck-out once to pad his league-leads in both categories.

On a personal note, I just want to thank each and every one of you who have taken time to contribute to this wonderful site this season. It was a disappointing season on the field for the A's, but it has been an honor and a privilege to do my part to ensure that the greater Oakland Athletic fan base stays connected to the team and each other and remains hopeful for an exciting 2009 season! See you all back in the Game Threads starting February 28th, the first Spring Training game!

I hope you meant that "memories are all that's left

of the 2008 season"…I’d hate to think you’re forecasting for 2009 in that sentence.

I was just going to say -

If “memories are all that are left in the A’s 2009 season,” that is truly sad. :-(

As bad as the season was after July,

you guys helped make it entertaining. See you in the 09 game threads….

So sad.

Be safe during the offseason, boys. No diving (I’m looking at you, Dale), no turning off alarm clocks, no sunscreen in the eyes. Have successful surgeries and come back to us soon. We’ll be waiting.

Let's just be glad it's over.
Told you it would be!

I have a gift for these types of predictions.

I'm pumped

for the offseason wheelings and dealings. If what we’ve seen through quotes from Beane and Wolff, there’s going to be some additions this offseason with hopefully minimal painful subtractions.

Cupcakes!

I saw some very nice cupcakes at the parade in Berkeley this morning. And playoff-bound Cupcakes is going to be on Extra Innings at 5 PM PT for those who care.

Extra Innings has promised prizes

for those who call in — and they’ll be on the radio until 6 pm PT

oh

i thought you meant cupcakes
(tried to find one of him champagne soaked but lost interest…)

at least our pitchers are going to the playoffs....

Haren, Harden, Blanton…..

minus Haren

plus Gaudin

ooops

sorry, cold medicine affecting my brain.

me oto

dont konw whatr granpa putsin this ostufff

Think I'll watch the last night

of Jeter theater. It should be fun hearing Michael Kay bitch about the season.

A's 2008 Season - I give it the final CLICK
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye!
(in falsetto) goooood byeeeeee!
At least we get the 12th pick in next years draft.

And Washington gets # 1 not Seattle.. The teaches them for sweeping us in the final series.

I am definately looking forward to this offseason to see what BB does to increase our power and hopefully secure someone for 3rd base for the long term. Also looking forward to the 2009 season to watch these youngsters develop even more and maybe surprise alot of people.

A's got the 12th pick this year as well
Actually pick #13

because the Nats didn’t sign Aaron Crow.

Doesn’t make an enormous difference, except when it does. Cough. Snort.

Excuse me, there seems to be some smoak in the room.

yeah, well, it won't be there next time

unfortunately

I'll take care of the problem

{eats Crow}

Doesn' matter which pick it is. They'll still pick Jemile Weeks.
Please tell me Rickie doesn't have any more brothers.
Buan is replaying K-Rod's

best (for the A’s) 2008 moment at the Coliseum…I still love listening to it!

Yes. Yes.

The sparking defense of Raul Ibanez is worth a second hearing too.

I just want to wish you good luck

We’re all counting on you.

I have this strange feeling that there will be some playoff threads coming soon at a computer near you, so forgive me if I come up a little short in the tears category.

To Taj and all other “threaders”: Thanks for doing what you do. You certainly helped take the sting out of a painful season.

I’m sorry I wasn’t around for the final series.

Wait, no I’m not.

OK, maybe a little.

We would have won if you were there.
Now she tells me.

Sigh.

final Buan of 2008 almost here

it was nice to here Blanton, by the way.

And Buan just signed off.

The 2008 A’s are history.

And yes, as always I’m going to follow the postseason. I am first and foremost a baseball fan.

Post season predictions....

Because it’s all we have left….

First, what I would like to see.

RS over Angels (of course)
Rays over Twins

Rays over RS

Brewers over Phillie
Cubs over Dodgers

Cubs over Brewers

WS-Brewers

How will the Brewers lose to the Cubs and then win the World Series?
You don't know the Cubs very well, do you?
But you know Billy Goats better than I do
To be honest, I don't ask their names

I thought it was female, but whatever.

Alcohol.

I should give it up one day.

Wow, you and I are really close in our rooting

My only difference is that although I like the Brewers I’m rooting for Philly only because my brother lives in Philadelphia and so there is a little “Philly fan” in my blood. I’d be rooting for the Brewers against any other NL opponent, though.

Not all that much

difference between the Phillies and the Brewers to me. I wouldn’t mind seeing them win it all, but I gave the Brew Crew the nod on the basis of years of futility.

Goodbye 1550 AM for another half-year

See you tomorrow at 11:05 AM for the Tigers-White Sox!

will it be on local radio?

if not it’s mlb.com radio for me (when I’m not in work meetings).

Best to check the Chron tomorrow

since it’s a last-minute addition, the ESPN affiliates might pick it up.

Re your personal note

i was thinking the same thing, and especially wanted to thank taj adib and all the game wrap writers, thread runners, mods, rockers and everyone else who makes AN the smooth runnin’ juggernaut that it is….

What a shit way to end a season.
