Dan Meyer is under the mistaken impression that he's pitching to Josh Hamilton at Yankee Stadium. Tigers with solo HRs in 3 consecutive innings. A's trail 3-2 after 4.
is “almost”. I’d love to see K-Rod grab his elbow in mid pitch, fall writhing to the ground, undergo seizures, and then have a helicopter land in centerfield to take him away.
KenKo just said our offense needs to take a “quantum leap”.
People use that phrase like a quantum leap is something huge. In fact, it’s just the opposite. It’s the smallest possible leap. By definition, you can’t leap less.
He can give up four runs on a series of crushed line drives, but then BOOM – double play, just like that. He’s always just one pitch away from putting a ridiculously badly pitched inning out of our misery.
He’s sending as message to all his players and the umpires. You never let someone walk all over you because it’s convienent. Eddings has a job to do, and Geren should have sent the message that he expects him to do it. The point would have set well with his young players. Sweeney shouldn’t have had to say a word to Eddings.
Let's Go Oakland!
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
Clap, Clap
Clap, Clap, Clap!
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Haha!
I was waiting for you to say “Roomy”
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
I ALMOST did...
I swear, but then…I thought it might have gotten old…
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
Leo-isms
never get old.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Yay!
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
You wouldn't be you

lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
I feel so...OCD...
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
I can relate.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
I'm sure.
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
down one....not bad. do-able.
ak_A - August 9, 2008
Very.
Where you been?
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
Was in Denver this past work-week checking out places to live.
ak_A - August 9, 2008
oh I know that,
I meant tonight.
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
penroding around town.
ak_A - August 9, 2008
lol
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
That's not acceptable.

co dependent? I’d be alright with that….
alox - August 9, 2008
Canadian Ostrich Association?
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008

ak_A - August 9, 2008
Contreras ruptured his achilles tendon
That’s painful even thinking about it
Trainman - August 9, 2008
trouble for the White Sox down the stretch
javaball - August 9, 2008
Rupturing is rarely good
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
happened to Vinnie Testeverde
about five years ago or so. I saw it—looked EXTREMELY painful.
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
That almost sounds to painful
to wish on Angels players.
alox - August 9, 2008
John Lackey.
Ruptured face.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Key word here....
is “almost”. I’d love to see K-Rod grab his elbow in mid pitch, fall writhing to the ground, undergo seizures, and then have a helicopter land in centerfield to take him away.
alox - August 9, 2008
LOL
How about Frankie?
He would be a good candidate for something like that especially the way he falls off the mound.
Trainman - August 9, 2008
C'mon Staples
schmifty - August 9, 2008
Yay Kurt!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
A couple runs this inning would be nice
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
and shutting out the Tigers in the bottom of the inning
javaball - August 9, 2008
Time for another
Jack jack.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
It's catching on
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Its a good one.
Too bad it didn’t work this time.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Or last time.
A Jack single just doesn’t get it done.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Detroit announcers are discussing the variety of necklaces on A's players
Zook’s puka shells vs. Staples’ Phiten
schmifty - August 9, 2008
Come on Jack.
oblique - August 9, 2008
I really hate it when
home plate umpires make the call on check swings. Unless its completely obvious they should defer unto the corner umps.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
I was eating some chocolate and Korach said
Hannahan is 0 for his last 24 and I nearly threw it up
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Was it with bacon?
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
yum.
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
I can keep eating it now
He’s not due up again for awhile
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Yay, Ryan!
And on that good note, I am going to go out for dinner. I’m starving.
Kimberly - August 9, 2008
Nice hit by Sweeney
That stroke is getting shorter and shorter… [waits…]
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Yay Ryan!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Please, Mark.
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
Sweeney
Atta boy.
Ellis, bring em in. PLEASE.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
Too bad
Ellis is hitting second. It was a nice rally while it lasted.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
cmooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn
catfish4real - August 9, 2008
ASS CRACK!
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
Where?
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Walking toward the dugout, head hanging.
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
There was a rainbow earlier, too
which I thought might be a good sign.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
I got excited for a second there
schmifty - August 9, 2008
I'm starting to get a little tired
of Mark Ellis.
alox - August 9, 2008
Want to sign my petition?
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
same
Not sure if I’d like to see him back next year.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
I think the A's might be as well
unless he signs for less money
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Let him go!
diaryofmac10 - August 9, 2008
Keep him!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
He really got ahold of that one
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
That was anticlimactic
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
For real.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
The sooner they can get Armando Gallarraga out of the game
the more likely the A’s are to score runs.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
And vice versa
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
They've been hitting him well.
It’s just that we have so many black holes in the lineup that there’s no way to continue the rallies.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
7 hits, 2 XBH - both scored
Too many singles and station to station baseball
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
It's better than the tons of K's
we had been racking up recently
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Cust certainly has been tested
playing tonight.
Hit4TheCycle - August 9, 2008
well, at least it stayed in the yard...
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
Same thought.
I was actually thinking Cust was going to make another spectacular (for him) catch.
alox - August 9, 2008
I don't trust this Polanco character
His eyes are too close together
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
He needs a hair cut.
alox - August 9, 2008
He has a misshaped head.
diaryofmac10 - August 9, 2008
Detroit's announcers...

UncleLeo - August 9, 2008
I can live with anyone but Physioc
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Huddler.
He’s the worst.
alox - August 9, 2008
They're not "bad", just... boring.
I’ll take this as an opportunity to say how much I detest the White Sox guys.
UncleLeo - August 9, 2008
Come on Meyer
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Eddings

alox - August 9, 2008
Bungee cords
or one of those leashes that retracts the line.
DMOAS - August 9, 2008
Yay Dallas!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
The sixth inning has been good to us. I'm optimistic we'll do well.
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Frank has a habit
Of going yard twice in a game when he’s starting to heat up.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Let's Go A's
Let’s have another, Frank
(well, we’ll take the single)
doctorK - August 9, 2008
Only four K's
for the A’s? Swinging at that…...who knew?
alox - August 9, 2008
Damn
So close!
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Not to worry....
Bobby’s up.
alox - August 9, 2008
Ugh.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
Haha!
Go Frank!
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
God Bobby
He looks so hopeless up there.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
easy Frank!
Leopold Bloom - August 9, 2008
poor frank… so much running
catfish4real - August 9, 2008
'what in the world,
makes Frank think that Bobby will get a base hit?
alox - August 9, 2008
He's driven a lot of big runs over the years?
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Atta baby, Hurt!
Let yer speed take over
mikev - August 9, 2008
Frank's in scoring position
if BoCro hits a triple, that is
doctorK - August 9, 2008
Way to work it

lynnzgal - August 9, 2008

catfish4real - August 9, 2008

Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008

Any contact with the ball that does not make an out will do.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
No
Not with who’s coming up after him. We need an RBI here.
Helloooo 1st - August 9, 2008
Ugh, true.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
Yay Bob!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
What did the Rangers get for Galarraga?
He seems like someone they could use.
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Some OF; not one of their starting OF though. Forgot the name.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
Michael Hernandez
Not sure what happened to him.
iglew - August 9, 2008
Looks like he's hitting .160 in the FSL
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Yeah, I see
Texas released him shortly after the trade. Mets signed him to a minor-league contract and now he’s a 25-year-old prospect in single A.
That’s quite a fizzle for Armando. What is it with Texas and giving away pitchers?
iglew - August 9, 2008
cmon kurt
show us some hawaii style
catfish4real - August 9, 2008
i can smell grand slam in the air
catfish4real - August 9, 2008

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Ugh! *smells like* of course
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Sad.
Leyland is going to take a K away from Gallaragas.

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
walk in the tying run time?
Blicks - August 9, 2008
Barton is up.
alox - August 9, 2008

catfish4real - August 9, 2008
He's a tough matchup for Barton. But he'll have to deal with these situations as he grows.
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
C'mon Daric!
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
God damnit

Dale's gone already? Wtf, Staples!
I should really pay more attention
schmifty - August 9, 2008
He works fast.
alox - August 9, 2008

schmifty - August 9, 2008
Meyer didn't do all that badly....
alox - August 9, 2008
Seconded.
Blicks - August 9, 2008

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008

mistersalty - August 9, 2008
Some slump-buster you are.
iglew - August 9, 2008
Speaking of fast.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008

KK saying Geren was very animated with Casilla…
oblique - August 9, 2008

Sheffield = Asshat
doctorK - August 9, 2008

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Sorry about that
Sheffield << asshat
doctorK - August 9, 2008
Yay Santiago!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008

That’s what it looked like on PitchFX…

Sort of....the last couple were sliders, but over the plate...a bit toward the outside part
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
One more

lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Yay Santiago!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Casilla is throwing hard...

alox - August 9, 2008
catfish4real - August 9, 2008

Casilla was much better after Geren ripped him a new one
Perhaps that’s something that should happen more often.
doctorK - August 9, 2008

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Embree growing a Playoff beard.

MobiusKlein - August 9, 2008
Embree in.
Game over.

Yep, the pen must be knackered cos this is a close game.
OldhamA - August 9, 2008

WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
"knackered"
This is one of those words that means something in England….yes?

It's unusual for Oldham to use words like that in here

Yes.

I missed the first 6 innings - someone who's watching
how did Dan Meyer look? (I know the results, just wondering about the process.)
Nico - August 9, 2008
His mistake pitches inside were crushed....
other than the 3 HR’s, he didn’t look bad at all. Pitched his way out of a couple of jams.
alox - August 9, 2008
And he threw strikes, inside and outside
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Did he keep his fastball and changeup down mostly?
Nico - August 9, 2008
Yes....except for two.
Predictable results on those.
alox - August 9, 2008
Doesn't sound too bad - I can live with an occasional
“solo HR” mistake. (Not three every five innings, but…) Fastball velocity?
Nico - August 9, 2008
92 mph
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Korach mentioned about quite a few fastballs down Broadway
He mentioned this after Polanco hit a single in his second at bat.
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Thanks - sounds like he's not a likely contender
for next year’s rotation, but possibly an upgrade over DiNardo for “long relief/spot starter”.
Nico - August 9, 2008
yes
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Two of Eveland, Smith, Meyer and Braden would be such an upgrade
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
They say the defense is the last thing to go
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Just got back from dinner, yum.
And now I’m ready to enjoy the rest of the A’s game. Oh, wait…
Kimberly - August 9, 2008
Grammar pedant pet peeve
KenKo just said our offense needs to take a “quantum leap”.
People use that phrase like a quantum leap is something huge. In fact, it’s just the opposite. It’s the smallest possible leap. By definition, you can’t leap less.
iglew - August 9, 2008
+1
A pet peeve of mine, as well.
doctorK - August 9, 2008
In fairness, thought, Ken has really
made quantum leaps with his grammar.
Nico - August 9, 2008
Imagine that I said that in a though bubble
Nico - August 9, 2008
At least he never said
it’s been light years since our last win.
iglew - August 9, 2008
Then we need a lot of those
Nico - August 9, 2008
Stellar leaps...
just doesn’t have the same ring.
alox - August 9, 2008
They've mostly been a station-to-station team for years, so I guess that counts as quantum leaps.
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Given how bad the A's are scoring runs
I’d have to agree.
doctorK - August 9, 2008
Scoring runs is overrated -
so many non-stat oriented baseball fans just don’t get that.
Nico - August 9, 2008
Not as bad as they overrate wins
W-L record? Talk about a useless stat.
iglew - August 9, 2008
It sounds silly, but they do say that about pitchers
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Oh, right.
I was thinking of team W-L record.
Sort of spoils my joke, huh?
iglew - August 9, 2008
It also sounds silly but they do prefer Pythagenport third-order W-L
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
W-L record is a joke
I don’t even pay attention to the standings. That part is just luck – I look at the ratio of VORP to jock-adjusted ground balls.
Nico - August 9, 2008
I think VORPTJAGB+ is more important
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Isn't that where they show the A's stat
when Comcast is showing the Giants’ stat?
Nico - August 9, 2008
Ask whoever does the Rotoworld updates
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Sometimes the best stats are the simplest ones.
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Maybe he meant like the television show.
You know, jump into someone else.
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
That actually makes sense.
oblique - August 9, 2008
Isn't that scary?
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
I'm scared.
oblique - August 9, 2008
Hold me?
iglew - August 9, 2008
I think so.
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
Yep. Like on those music nerd tshirts-- "I'm a fermata. Hold me."
whiteshoes40 - August 9, 2008
Though really it should be
“I’m under a fermata. Hold me.”
oblique - August 9, 2008
Nothing should be taking "quantum leaps,"
unless they’re electrons.
Kimberly - August 9, 2008
Can we say that Cust has a quantum arm?
And how far can Jack throw an electron?
eastcoasta'sfan - August 9, 2008
Hey, I just remembered something -
DiNardo’s really terrible.
Nico - August 9, 2008
So far he's no worse than Embree
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
He's our most experienced starter.
iglew - August 9, 2008
Yeah
He really shouldn’t be on any ML roster…even Oakland’s
diaryofmac10 - August 9, 2008
Hee hee
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
He'd crack the Texas starting rotation, probably.
Blicks - August 9, 2008
Granderson didn't test Cust's arm
Tigers must be feeling sorry for the A’s
doctorK - August 9, 2008
The anti-tease is in progress.
iglew - August 9, 2008
Uncle!!
diaryofmac10 - August 9, 2008
man o man
what gives?
And can we get a third baseman who can hit OR field, either would suffice.
MobiusKlein - August 9, 2008
Di nardo is doing a tremendous job.....
If his job was to make he Tiger’s too tired to score in tomorrows game
theblackpearl - August 9, 2008
This will make the 1-2-3 ninth much easier to take
doctorK - August 9, 2008
This'll help balance the pythag record out a bit more
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
You are referring, of course, to "After the All-Star Break"?
Nico - August 9, 2008
I was hoping to at least win the Pythag ^3 standings
If we don’t, I’ll be disconsolate
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
See this is what DiNardo so fantastic:
He can give up four runs on a series of crushed line drives, but then BOOM – double play, just like that. He’s always just one pitch away from putting a ridiculously badly pitched inning out of our misery.
Nico - August 9, 2008
C'mon, Farnsy, we just need 11 walks here
Nico - August 9, 2008
Or five more of those.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Yay Bob!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
By the way, Farnsworth is a great example of the
“velocity/movement/location” principle. He has velocity and that’s it. And he sucks.
Nico - August 9, 2008
Except for the Tigers
A cynic would say that’s just coincidence.
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Sounds like the crowd thinks he sucks as well
Trainman - August 9, 2008
They know it.
Everyone knows it. How was he not traded to the A’s. That’s what I want to know.
alox - August 9, 2008
Or they're miffed Pudge was traded for him
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Here we go... 8-run rally...
whiteshoes40 - August 9, 2008
Let's be realistic.
4 run rally, then leaving the bases loaded to end it with a K, looking.
pam5981 - August 9, 2008
(checks where Cust is hitting)
OK that makes sense
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
why does the guy who did 5 innings, 3 runs gets the L
but the guys who do 1 inning 3 runs or 4 runs get to skate home?
MobiusKlein - August 9, 2008
It can't be a lot of fun to skate home in that weather
Nico - August 9, 2008
Bleah - Garza's getting rocked at Seattle
4-0 M’s over Rays in the 2nd.
Nico - August 9, 2008
My kid goes to school with his younger brother.
alox - August 9, 2008
Could you maybe pass on a message to him from me
that his older brother sucks? Thanks.
Nico - August 9, 2008
Sure. I already sent the autographed ball back.
I could have just scribbled your message on the ball.
alox - August 9, 2008
That's sad
I want TB to win, win and win again
Trainman - August 9, 2008
Yay Kurt!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Boo Daric
Nico - August 9, 2008
It's all part of growing up.
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
4-27 since coming off DL
and Hannahan 0-26.
DFA is PH for Hannahan. Even Geren thinks Hannahan will fail (LOL)
Trainman - August 9, 2008
DP to end it coming up
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Because Garen is too uncreative to call for a
suicide squeeze here.
Nico - August 9, 2008
Good time to practice it
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Jack never hits into DPs at home
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
If Emil Brown leads a team in RBI four straight seasons, that's pretty bad.
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Any extra runs scored
that does not result in the A’s winning, is all bittermelons.
Hit4TheCycle - August 9, 2008
gad, i go away for a bit and come back to
completely un-do-able!
ak_A - August 9, 2008
Never leave again.
oblique - August 9, 2008
I had to step away for a bit
... we haven’t lost yet?
iglew - August 9, 2008
still in the thick of it, thick of what..probably not mentionable.
ak_A - August 9, 2008
It's time to go with an Aaron-Carlos-Ryan OF
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
I'm not sure Hank Aaron is really very good anymore.
mikev - August 9, 2008
Sweeney's right about the outside corner
All three calls have been terrible.
Nico - August 9, 2008
Ryan was pissed about his last PA too.
Jennifer - August 9, 2008
The ump is trying to help.
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
KK:
“He’s going to get kicked out of a game that’s over!”
oblique - August 9, 2008
That would be awesome.
pam5981 - August 9, 2008
You tell 'im, Sweeney
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Whoa, mad Baby.
pam5981 - August 9, 2008
oblique - August 9, 2008
Ha!
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
lol
whiteshoes40 - August 9, 2008
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Fuck Eddings.
That was bullshit.
alox - August 9, 2008
yeah, dammit
Without that bad call, we might have lost 10-4.
iglew - August 9, 2008
Game's over, but you don't expand the zone just to get it over with faster.
First strike was probably borderline. Second strike was definitely not one.
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
The one Sweeney was rung up one before on a 3-2 pitch,
when the score was close, was equally bad. Sweeney had every right to be upset, IMO.
Nico - August 9, 2008
I thought that one was a strike
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Gameday suggests it might have barely caught the black
I missed it live.
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Though Gameday shows both of the first two strikes to him in the ninth...
...as being more off the plate than the third strike in the seventh.
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Man!
Ry=Pissed!
lynnzgal - August 9, 2008
Ooooh, Angry Ryan.
Someone needs to wash out his mouth with soap. Volunteers?
whiteshoes40 - August 9, 2008
You might have to hand out numbers for a raffle
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Dang it
I gave up on the TV, but I’ll pretend I saw it and help.
Kimberly - August 9, 2008
Good Ryan
SHow some fire. Fuck the umpires
Trainman - August 9, 2008
I don't think he wants to go that far
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Geren
alox - August 9, 2008
Geren is an ass.
He should have been all over Eddings.
alox - August 9, 2008
Second
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
Last out in a blowout. He has argued many other times, that would have bee
pointless
theblackpearl - August 9, 2008
....but fun
WaddellCanseco - August 9, 2008
That's not the point.
He’s sending as message to all his players and the umpires. You never let someone walk all over you because it’s convienent. Eddings has a job to do, and Geren should have sent the message that he expects him to do it. The point would have set well with his young players. Sweeney shouldn’t have had to say a word to Eddings.
alox - August 9, 2008
Yes
Flashfire - August 9, 2008
Besides which....
Eddings probably felt like he was putting a rookie player in his place due to him questioning his calls in the last AB.
