The A's open a three-game series in Boston tonight with Justin Duchscherer facing Tim Wakefield.
The A's hope to begin August on a better note than they ended July, as the team has lost 10 of 12 games since the All-Star break to fall a game under .500. If the A's win today, they'll be 54-54 at the 2/3 mark of the season, with exactly 54 games to play.
Perhaps the passing of the non-waiver trading deadline with no additional moves for the A's will help the team to re-focus and play better then they did at the end of July.
The A's offense will receive a much-needed shot in the arm today with the return of Frank Thomas from the DL. Big Hurt had posted a .933 OPS in 106 plate appearances for the A's before injuring himself on May 27. Although Big Frank isn't at 100% yet, he's absolutely owned tonight's starter Tim Wakefield over the course of his career with 7 homers in 53 at-bats, good for a whopping .717 slugging percentage.
Frank's return also has the effect of bumping Jack Cust out to left field, which might not be as bad you think...
Stat(s) of the Day - notice how much better Cust has hit in LF than as a DH:
Cust has an .890 OPS in left field and a .691 OPS as a DH in '08. That's a difference of .200 OPS points. Now, obviously that sample is small, and the true gap in Cust's hitting when playing the field vs. DH'ing isn't nearly that far apart. But his OPS was 40 points greater when he was playing the field vs. DHing last year, too, and it's common for players to hit worse when they DH than when they get to play the field.
Frank Thomas, practically a career DH, is the rare exception. He's one of the few guys who can be projected to hit exactly the same as a DH at this point in his career because heck, that's all he's done for years.
So, perhaps having Cust in left field isn't such a bad thing, if it's the difference between having two .800 OPS hitters in the lineup (Cust and Thomas) versus none (Cust at DH). It's even more tolerable with the outstanding defense of Gonzalez in center and Sweeney in right. If we retain only one of our free agents, I'd hope that it's Thomas, for exactly that ripple effect he creates.
Here's tonight's lineup, L-R-L all the way through. It's amazing how much better Big Frank makes it look, just by pushing everyone else into a better spot. Barton was activated today, too:

Nah, don't like that
thejd44 - August 1, 2008
woooooooooohooooooooooooo!!!!!!
finally, my team is in town.
here’s to Duke painting corners all night.
oakinboston - August 1, 2008
on resigning Thomas
if Thomas wants to and feels healthy enough to play another season, he is going to be on the A’s. He continually talks about how he never should have left the A’s, etc and it’s clear he enjoys the clubhouse atmosphere here more than anywhere else. I’m sure he would be willing to take another pay cut to be with the A’s at least one more season, it just makes sense on both sides.
Besides, the A’s already have the youngest team in baseball, if we didn’t have one of the older guys I think our average age wouldn’t be old enough to drink!!!
stranahanahan - August 1, 2008
I'm right with you
Another part of the appeal of Thomas to me is, you know what you’re getting. If the A’s brought in an outside guy to DH or play the field a bit – say, Juan Rivera of the Angels or Kevin Millar of the Orioles, both of whom are free agents probably in the A’s price range – it’s impossible to be 100% sure how they’d mesh with the guys or whether they’d like being here.
Frank is a first-ballot HOFer who has twice signed a contract to play for the league minimum for us. I love him. He’s probably my favorite A.
notsellingjeans - August 1, 2008
Re-sign Frank for 2009 and tell him he is only to JOG and TROT
Nico - August 1, 2008
Hell, if it is on the ground, just walk back to the dugout.
theblackpearl - August 1, 2008
i may be in the minority, but im glad to see barton back in the lineup.
im sure bankston and conrad are nice guys, but he is the one to prove he belongs.
put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
Unfortunately even though it is the Red Sox, us in Sacramento will be forced to hear that Barton
is back in the lineup, since it won’t be on TV to see.
theblackpearl - August 1, 2008
SuSlu on today's moves...
Link
Recap:- Andrew Brown to DL (biceps tendonitis)
- Daric Barton activated from DL
- Gregorio Petit recalled
- Joey Devine likely to be activated Saturday
- Tony DeFrancesco and Tye Waller exchange base coach responsibilities
calgbear - August 1, 2008
I didn't think Geren had it in him to move DeFranceso off of third base, or was it
Billy’s idea.
theblackpearl - August 1, 2008
Billy's.
Has to be.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
sounds like a good move
I’m wondering if I’ll be able to get this game on TV (I’m still an NRAF until mid-August)...if not, it’s mlb.com audio time
OaklandSi - August 1, 2008
I like the move, at least until Waller makes a questionable call them I wont like it.
A'sfaninNC - August 1, 2008
FINALLY!!!
I have nothing against Tony D, but he needs more time to learn the league before setting up camp over there.

A'sfaninNC - August 1, 2008
Is it me or does just having Big Frank
in that lineup instantly add about 1000% credibility?
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
By my estimates
1022%
andeux - August 1, 2008
+100%
maybe not 100% because the line-up has Crosby!
MMunoz33 - August 1, 2008
Does anyone know how Dan Meyer is doing in AAA?
Whats his chances of being called up? Does he still have a chance with us at all???
MMunoz33 - August 1, 2008
He's done quite well over
the last six or seven starts. He will definitely be a call up these last couple months. We need to figure out what we’re doing with him.
Someone had specific stats for his last start in a recent post…
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Thanks!!!!

Well, they both play left field poorly . . .
eastcoasta'sfan - August 1, 2008
Here's to a happy August.
Kimberly - August 1, 2008
This is my only comment tonight.
LiZaRdReVoLuTiOn - August 1, 2008
Calling Frank "practically a career DH" is a pretty silly thing
Since for his entire White Sox career, he had played more games at first than at DH. According to baseballreference.com, he has 1284 games at DH and 971 at first base, and since leaving the White Sox he’s played 324 games, all at DH.
Furthermore, Frank has been significantly more productive at first base in his career (this, however, could be more relective of the fact that his prime years were spent as a first baseman): .337/.453/.625 at first, .277/.396/.512 at DH. That’s from retrosheet, so it doesn’t include 2008.
I’m not saying Frank should play first or shouldn’t be out there DHing or anything. Just had to correct a couple faulty assumptions about him.
thejd44 - August 1, 2008
Frank has played less than
a hundred games at first in the last ten years.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
He's still played almost 1000 at first in his career
Which makes him not a guy who has only been a DH. He’s still played something like 40% of his career games at first.
thejd44 - August 1, 2008
I'm actually excited for a game against the Red Sox.
It’s amazing what seeing Frank Thomas in the lineup can do.
whiteshoes40 - August 1, 2008
Hey look everybody - it's an almost real lineup!
Grr…Put a healthy Chavez in there at 3B and it IS a real lineup.
Nico - August 1, 2008
HAHAHA a healthy Chavez not this year in all likelyhood.
maybe this time next year the deadline move will be activating the A’s new 1B for the rest of the season.
A'sfaninNC - August 1, 2008
i like the first 6 in our lineup...

Damn 9 Pitches Is Like Two Runs!!!
Somehow, although the score is 0-0, that walk feels like it put us in the lead.
Raymond St. Martin (Saint) - August 1, 2008
We should be allowed to play baseball

Doesn't Wakefield throw something besides a knuckelball?
I thought he threw a curveball or “fastball” every once and a while.
micdog2001 - August 1, 2008
I think he's got
a “Loiaza-like fastball”—like low 80s…
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Actually mid-70s - usually around 75 MPH
Nico - August 1, 2008
Oh,
so maybe it is Loiaza
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
It is really dancing tonight:
I expect to see a lot of it.

put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
prolly not.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
i'd be delighted with three runs over the course of three games.
ak_A - August 1, 2008
Well, shit,
.220 would raise our average by about 100 points, right? I thought we were talking about Boston…
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Has Duke hit a wall?
OldhamA - August 1, 2008
Could be.
Has he ever pitched anywhere near the number of innings he is this season?
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
96 was his previous high (in 2004)
121 so far this year
green star oakland - August 1, 2008
And he's a history of back problems, right?
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
great point.
put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
Curveball is key for Duke
if he cant get it over the plate he will get hit hard.

asfaninpismobeach - August 1, 2008
thats what oppossing teams have been saying about our lineup all year
put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
Duke isn't getting much movement on his fastball so far
The curve is ok but he’s going to it more because the fastball isn’t doing a whole lot. Hopefully he’ll get it back today. I don’t think he’s hit a “wall” so much as he’s having a “blip” (mini slump) like all pitchers do.
Nico - August 1, 2008
It is a long season.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
i despise the yankees, but i would still like to see them hand it to LAAAAA
put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
Its tough for me, because I hate them both soooo much
but the Angels are making the playoffs no matter what. The Yanks could miss the playoffs and that makes me happy

Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Man, I wish Barton would get on a roll like last september
that would be awesome!
micdog2001 - August 1, 2008
I just wish he'd find his swing and look
like he did the beginning of the year.
The radio guy just said we have “a (chuckle) uniquely constructed batting order.”
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Unique=bad?
asfaninpismobeach - August 1, 2008
oh yeah.
They’re laughing their Chowd heads off at us.
I don’t like them.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
I have to admit
I dont expect much to happen unless Frank is up at bat. But I can hope that cust gets a hold of one every now and then
asfaninpismobeach - August 1, 2008
Those guys belong in the wikipedia entry for douchiness
mikeA - August 1, 2008
barton, rookie of the year?
put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
well technically, he is only a rookie for one yer.
theblackpearl - August 1, 2008
well, he was swinging anyhow.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Bad results but good AB from Barton
A'sfaninNC - August 1, 2008
eh,
he swung at balls 3,4,5, and 6 and fouling the ball off doesn’t impress me.
mikeA - August 1, 2008
more so the number of pitches to saw than anything else.
Gameday’s not the best place to get pitch locations from
A'sfaninNC - August 1, 2008
wish these Boston announcers would shut up about what a smart move it was to get rid of Ramirez
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
almost HR Zook
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
Man
72 mph fastball down the middle? swing at that!
micdog2001 - August 1, 2008
I guess gameday just guesses knuckleball every time to be safe
micdog2001 - August 1, 2008
Gripelet: Against Wakefield
you have to give the green light 3-0. And if you saw the pitch, you know why: A 73 MPH fastball down the middle when you can look fastball.
Nico - August 1, 2008
I just wonder if a pitch that slow,
even if it were right up the middle, wouldn’t “fool” people so used toswinging early.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
It's about the speed of BP
Though I never understood why hitters wouldn’t prefer to take BP against 90 MPH in getting ready for a game.
Nico - August 1, 2008
ditto
...unless it could just be a psychological edge, perhaps. I make good contact, and here’s how I do it. I make good contact and here’s proof…
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
I dunno - considering how much of hitting is timing
I would think you’d want to get comfortable with the true speed. Might be one of those archaic “we’ve always done it this way” things that no one has the guts to change for their team.
Nico - August 1, 2008
Where can you find a BP pitcher who can throw 90, and be around the plate. If it
isn’t near the plate, you have watching practice, or an A’s regular season game.
theblackpearl - August 1, 2008
By moving him in about 10-15 feet
Nico - August 1, 2008
you can't swing too early if you don't swing at all.
I understand the desire to want to make the pitcher throw a strike but . . .
micdog2001 - August 1, 2008
Ump doesn't seem to care much for Duke
mikeA - August 1, 2008
No kidding
Nico - August 1, 2008
"He had a childlike grace to him"
Yeah, that must’ve bee nwhy you couldn’t fling him far enough from oyu.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Never thought I'd say this, but ...
I wish ESPN would show more Red Sox games. I was hoping I might get a chance to actually watch the A’s play someone other than the Mariners, but no Red Sox all weekend. :-(
iglew - August 1, 2008
2 outs... shut em down Duke
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
Wow
I just turned on the TV in my tiny island apartment, and the A’s game is on.
Sure, it’s the Red Sox game for the Japanese, but what are the chances?
My first day off and I get to watch the A’s? Sweet!
JediLeroy - August 1, 2008

Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
OK
I had to switch to the A’s broadcast. It was kind of interresting to listen to the oposing team’s announcers but they talk about Manny Ramerize WAY too much. He’s gone, GET OVER IT!
micdog2001 - August 1, 2008
Hello AN'ers.
That was quite painful listening to Jerry Remy talk negatively about Manny for 45 minutes. John Henry must be paying him extra for him to perform damage control with their fan base.
Duke is so pissed off for the organization not trading him… he will not wear a black jersey.
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
He loves that jersey

of course
butler19 - August 1, 2008

i'll take two sir
butler19 - August 1, 2008
No, we prefer
the rotation of Emil and Cust in left.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Im watching the Angels game also
I know wins for a pitcher is overrated but I have to admit that 5 pitchers with over 15+ wins on one team is just crazy
asfaninpismobeach - August 1, 2008
I don't think wins for a pitcher is overrated at all. It's a stat that means a lot
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
The average baseball fan overvalues wins by a pitcher.
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
As does the average baseball writer
doctorK - August 1, 2008
And the weighted "All-Star" selections that come from W's.
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
and the HoF votes
doctorK - August 1, 2008
curious... who was the last crappy 20 game winner?
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
True but how many guys had 12-15 wins that had a better
ERA than a guy who won 15-18 games?
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
I'm with you here - I get the point. I am actually asking the question though... can you think of a crappy 20 game winner off the top of your head?
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
Wilbur Wood was 20-19 in 1974 for the White Sox
(I had to look it up)
doctorK - August 1, 2008
he played for a bad team too... so maybe he wasn't crappy
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
How many games did he start?
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
42 starts
Had an ERA+ of 105 (not terrible) and a WHIP of 1.202, but like jdub69 said, he played for a bad team, which is probably why he “lost” 19 games and only “won” 20.
doctorK - August 1, 2008
clear as mud
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
No. That is why I said true because I agree that 20 wins
is a good indicator. It’s just that, overall, it’s a jaded stat.
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
agreed somewhat
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
Crappy pitchers on good teams are going to get more wins then most good pitchers on
a team like lets say the A’s
asfaninpismobeach - August 1, 2008
the problem is the Angels don't have any crappy starters, unfortunately
jdub69 - August 1, 2008
I hear ya
Santana is throwing darts right now. Guy has a very live arm
asfaninpismobeach - August 1, 2008
who didn't we want to trade for?
ak_A - August 1, 2008
Oh, Hannahan, Bankston, Conrad...
Nico - August 1, 2008
That should be a real boost to our lineup.
ohtobe21likehuston - August 1, 2008
hitters
butler19 - August 1, 2008

very hard to watch
lynnzgal - August 1, 2008

into the Hagen Daz now.
ak_A - August 1, 2008

Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008

put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
huh? crosby, and he had his game face on too.
ak_A - August 1, 2008
I'm thinking Frank and his rebar
had a little motivational talk with all our miscreants.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Hmmm
lynnzgal - August 1, 2008
If Frank came in there and told me
that i had a responsibility to play the game with integrity and give my all, I think I’d do it. I think I’d be scared not to do it.
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
Especially,
if he was holding the re-bar in position
lynnzgal - August 1, 2008
Ponson is pitching a no-hitter through 4
Turns out anything really CAN happen in baseball.
Nico - August 1, 2008

Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008

Nico - August 1, 2008
Jason Bay can just suck it.

Kimberly - August 1, 2008
Maybe he'll hurt himself
lynnzgal - August 1, 2008

jdub69 - August 1, 2008
zito = gamer
put em in a body bag johnny - August 1, 2008
by transitive law,
Hannahan = Zito
Nico - August 1, 2008
Maybe the Giants should put Zito at 3rd.
oblique - August 1, 2008
Shit!
Let’s put him on the mound! We’ve got four or five years of quasi-quality starts left, but we gotta hurry!
Leopold Bloom - August 1, 2008
The ESPN announcers keep calling him "Ziro"
iglew - August 1, 2008
